Helpful resource that could be improved.......2007-05-14
The best thing about The Complete Games Trainers Play is its sheer size. Actually, it isn't nearly as big as some reviews imply. It is really around 1000 pages, not 2000+. And for some reason, a significant percentage of those pages are left blank. But even with that caveat, this is still a sizable resource.
If you are willing to devote 30+ minutes to finding an activity, you are sure to find one (or five) that are ideal for your training event. The fact that individual "games" can be removed from the ring binder is also helpful. This allows you to use the activities without carrying the whole book around, and to easily photocopy sheets for individual participants as some activities require.
However, there are some significant downsides. There is no real way to find appropriate activities without flipping through virtually the entire book. A large number of the activities aren't very good. And, most of the book is in a strange "typewriter" typeface that makes it look like it came from 1972. (Oddly, there are some pages which are randomly sprinkled through the book that use a different, more recent-looking typeface.)
To really upgrade its usefulness, Games . . . would benefit from taking a leap into the computer age. In other words, along with the printed book, a computer CD should be included. This could feature a good, searchable index, which is now lacking. It would also make it possible to print out games, and modify handouts on the computer to your organization's needs.
I've never bought any other resources like this, so I can't say if this is better or worse than others. I can say that in spite of the steep price and the drawbacks, I'm definitely glad I purchased it. It was very useful to me, and will be again in the future. However, there are a few simple steps the authors and publishers could take to greatly improve it.
Trainers Dream.......2006-11-03
This is a great tool of Trainers. Keeping your trainees engaged throughout the training is always a challenge. This tool give creative ways to assess retention of information. The games are great and the administrative forms and suggestions are wonderful.
Lots of games here.......2004-12-08
People love playing games a lot more than listening to lectures; this is indisputable. I didn't like all of the games listed here, but so what. Several I found helpful and intend to use.
Not Impressed.......2003-09-30
Although there is a lot of information packed into this book, I was very unimpressed with the layout and visual design. It looks like it was typed up in 1970. The graphics are ancient and the layout is just one big binder with no cross-referencing or indexing available. To find a useful game, you have to sift through hundreds of pages. It really is a shame, as there are some clever games here to loosen up an audience.
Frankly for this price, I expected something a bit flashier and filled with reproducibles that I would want to copy and hand out. The way it looks now, and with it's unwieldy format, it's going to sit on my shelf.
If I hadn't spilled water on it, I would have sent it back for a refund.
The Complete Games Trainers Play.......2000-05-23
This book was helpful in planning an in-house managment training session. The book is divided into sections making it easy to locate games targeted at specific areas. The book is actually a 3" 3 ring binder. It is a large book, however, it does contain a wealth of information.

Quick Read, Quick Tips, Quick Improvement!.......2007-06-05
I have found the techniques and tips from "Death by PowerPoint" to be invaluable. I wish more in the private sector would read this and embrace her techiques. Kerr hit a bullseye with this book! I have read...and re-read... the book six or seven times and keep it close by for quick reference. The presentations I give now have become the gold standard among my contemporaries...and others ask me to help them out to create emphasis or spice up their upcoming presentation. Not too long ago, I used her PowerPoint techniques in a presentation to a roomfull of over 150 executives and the COO. It ended up setting me apart from all the others and the focus I received led to me being the first choice for my desired position! I have actually sent some of my young professionals to Kerr's courses to supplement the presentation skills in her PowerPoint book. I RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TO ALL WHO HAVE TO PRESENT OR CREATE POWERPOINT PRESENTATIONS!
PowerPoint or PowerPlop.......2007-04-29
Kerr is right on track with her book Death by PowerPoint. If you are in charge of the presentation then you need to take charge and run the show. She discusses engaging and entertaining the audience form start to finish. It about de-bugging your presentation so you're professional not foolish and so the audience has a memorable experience. One can loose a group in ninety seconds, dim the lights down low, loose eye contact and you can be dead and not even know it. Kerr's book can really help if you follow the steps but more importantly work on your delivery then your slides. PowerPoint was a great invention but I've seen it turn into an ineffective unless crutch. Now in business we have another new dynamic challenge to deal with- Webinars- the presentation that takes place over the Internet with no eye contact or physical in-person touch- I'm sure Kerr must have this one in the works.
Remember presentations are to cause interest and get people to take action- if your presentation is dead it's over. Thanks for the great book, It helped help us get from point A to B faster and have more fun on the way.
It's a quick easy read and a great tool for your reference library.
Worth every dime!.......2007-04-29
Death by Powerpoint struck me as a poignant title because I have been a member of an audience where I wish I had been embraced by the sweet arms of death rather than continue on with "having the life sucked out of me". I am an professor who walks this tightrope and have used the principles which Kerr prescribes in this book with great success. The book is very easy to read but don't let that fool you. The contents prove to work so much that I have purchased this little book for new teachers whom I have mentored in college. I have compared those new professors who apply this text against those who try to it on their own and find the students are much more attentive when this is used. Simple, entertaining and effective is the way to best describe this book.
Truth in humor.......2007-04-18
Death by powerpoint! How many times have you heard about the element of truth in all humor. Powerpoint, unfortunately, is mis-used and abused in the world of presentations. Cherie Kerr does a great job at pointing out the sole purpose of a powerpoint presentation. It is background for your presentation/show. It should not be the whole show. We have all been through painful presentations that could have been easily avoided had they utilized the basic points that this book teaches. The examples the author uses anchor the basics to a good powerpoint presentation. Although the book is a quick read, you will not want it far from your reach for reference every time you double click the powerpoint icon. Add polish and professionalism to your presentations. Get this book!
PowerPoint book with Power.......2007-04-17
I was trying to find a book on PowerPoint that was not so boring and I definitely found it in this book! It was excellent to read and a very quick read too! I found it very informative and fun to read at the same time. I would highly recommend it to anyone who does PowerPoint presentations. It has fun cartoons throughout the book that really put a smile on my face! It also has before and after examples at the end that I felt were very helpful. I also liked the easy seven steps for content and seven simple steps to keep in mind for delivery. I would encourage anyone who does PowerPoint presentations, whether it is once in awhile or on a daily basis to get this book! What I learned more than anything was how a PowerPoint show is just like any other show and needs to be entertaining in order for people to get the message. I love Kerr's sense of humor; she entertains while she instructs.

A WONDERFUL TOOLKIT CHANGED THE PAINFUL PROCESS OF WRITING REFFERENCE LETTERS INTO A BREEZE.......2006-03-05
I love this book! I'm a TA and was asked by a former student for a reference letter. I usually regard this as a time-consuming and painful procedure, though I personally really want to help them with their academic pursuits.
I happened to find this Instant Recommendation Letter Kit book online. After reading the review, I ordered it without hesitation - and I'm glad I did! The book includes very detailed tips and guidelines on writing recommendation letters. The meaty part of the book is comprised of real-life examples of letters organized into different categories, like employment-related, college-related, character-related, evaluation letters, general reference letters, and college admission essays. These cover just about all of the reference letters you'll ever need to deal with.
Another great feature is the free templates file that you can request by e-mail in MS-Word format. These templates themselves are worth the price of the Kit! It will save you huge amounts of time while helping you write a great reference letter. It really works for me. I highly recommend it!
AMAZING RESOURCE FOR WRITING RECOMMENDATION LETTERS.......2005-03-17
This is a great book - a terrific resource to help you navigate the process of writing any recommendation letter.
Instant Recommendation Letter Kit provides all the necessary guidance to help you produce memorable, striking, and effective recommendation letters.
Shaun Fawcett gives you a helpful, well-organized guide, with copies of actual letters and practical tips. A good source for anyone who needs to write a recommendation letter of any kind.
It is highly recommended.
Your Letters Will Write Themselves.......2003-03-23
If you're familiar with any of Shaun Fawcett's "Instant Writing Kit" eBooks, (like his wonderful "Instant Business Letter Writing Kit"), you already know that they get right to the point and include zero filler.
This one is no exception: open the "book" and you are immediately reading clear, concise guidelines on writing professional quality recommendation letters, backed up by a wealth of Fawcett's famous "Real Life Templates" that practically make the letters write themselves.
Fawcett includes a wonderful section on both the structure of a letter that "gets the job done," and the ethical guides to follow when both requesting a recommendation letter, or responding to a request yourself. (He even tells you how to ethically and cordially turn down a request).
As usual, Fawcett's "Real Life Templates" include a collection of solid, impressively composed letters written by an obvious master of professional writing. You will find what you need here!
Among the templates included are: recommendations for employment, college admission, general reference letters, character references, corporate and educational letters, civic commendations, job performance and more. Writing letters almost weekly for my small business consulting firm, ..., I can tell you that Fawcett's templates really work.
These templates, combined with the superb foundational guidelines Mr. Fawcett provides, will have you producing your own letters within the first hour that you open the book, saving you hours of struggling over notes, rewrites and revisions.
The eBook closes with a highly detailed chapter on writing college admission essays, including 5 example essays and over 60 URLs (weblinks) where you can find further info. An absolute must for anyone who is either preparing to attend university, or helping a loved one to pack their bags.
If you value your TIME, and need to write or request a recommendation letter, you absolutely owe it to yourself to purchase this eBook. It will pay for itself twice over with your first use. Rather than struggling for hours with revisions, your letters will literally write themselves.
Get this book -- it's the very best!.......2003-03-07
This book is the best! I received actual electronic recommendation letters from the book, selected the paragraphs that I needed, and I gave them to my manager -- because she was writing a recommendation letter. She said the paragraphs were "really, really helpful," and that's high praise. The letters in the book are truly outstanding -- you won't read anything nearly as good anywhere else. Also, they cover a lot
of different topics, including how well the employee presents, how diligent the employee is, and so forth. This book will pay for itself many times over -- because it'll help you or someone you know get a great new job. I highly recommend it.
Book Description
Recent research revealed that corporate managers spendas much as 50 percent of their working day preparing, making, or watching presentations. There’s a good reason for that: success in business depends upon your skill at persuading someone to accept your point of view or choose your product and services ahead of any other. Yet many people become tense and fearful at the thought of speaking before a group. This guide and its accompanying CD-ROM will ease presenters’ anxiety. It explains how to gauge the nature of an audience and use that information to select the most effective language, visual support, and style of non-verbal communication. The end result is a memorable, well-argued, and confidently delivered presentation that will help professionals from every field get ahead.

small business marketing cookbook.......2001-11-25
As the title suggests, this book is a how-to guide for marketing and promoting your business. It contains hundreds of scripts, ready made examples, and can help with dealing with customers on all levels.
More than half the book is focused on written communications. It contains suggestions as well as ready-made examples-- from cold sales letters to the touchy subject of dealing with customer credit issues.
The remainder of the book deals with communicating with customers over the phone, print advertisements, creating press kits, TV and radio. It even has scripts for effectively handling irate customers.
I would especially recommend this book for small business owners.
Excellent book.......1997-11-01
These types of books tend to be stilted, but not this one. The examples are written in a contemporary style and provide a good basis to jump start your thinking. In an attempt to be all things, the author includes chapters on Radio/Television. These chapters can't possibly do justice to the subjects.
Book Description
New technologies and services come and go every year. 2005 will see some of these emerge with major impact in the marketplace, in terms of competitive pressure on alternative solutions, alteration of users' buying and consumption behavior or simply building the foundation for future solutions. Perhaps more importantly, we finally see the fulfillment of the promise of some of the most talked about trends of the last few years. Here is the IDC's Predictions list on the top 10 telecommunications trends across the Asia/Pacific (excluding Japan) or APEJ region for 2005:
Interest in pay TV over broadband networks expands VoIP gains traction in the residence Wireless broadband Fixed-mobile convergence (FMC) will operators join in? The wireless enterprise gains momentum The "multifunctional" switch Enterprise IP Telephony changing gears Near Field Communications (NFC) getting close in 2005? Big Boys' rising interest in managed services First foot into the homes
3G will finally be rolled out by many operators across the APEJ region; VoIP (including Voice over Broadband or VoBB) will start to mature as a service and in some markets, will replace traditional private automatic branch exchange (PABX) systems in the enterprise sector in the form of IP Centrex service. The concept of converging networks is expected to penetrate deeper into the carrier, enterprise, and consumer markets as buyers begin to appreciate the real benefits offered.
2005 will be a year of continuing transformation: wired will become wireless, wireless will become wired, voice will become data, and hard vendors will push soft services.

Customer Reviews:
A near "must-read" for MBA students seeking employment.......2004-01-15
Job- or internship-seeking MBA students should first, of course, take advantage of the many resources available from their business school's career center, and also any alumni career services offered by their undergraduate school. An outstanding book to augment these services, however, is Nail the Job.
Written in a hip style that should appeal to Gen X MBA students, the book is a collection of articles from MBA Jungle and JD Jungle magazines. It doesn't read like a collection, however, but as a complete, step-by-step introduction to today's MBA student job search.
I have only one criticism. Chapter 7 on "headhunters" is confusing. Though it's clearly describing contingency search firms, it doesn't clarify this point - or identify and describe the distinction between retained search and contingency search. In a sense, this is a minor criticism given the book's primary audience - search firms, retained or contingency, are rarely of help to MBA students, particularly those attending full-time. Why should an organization looking to hire new MBAs pay a search fee of any type when it probably already has an internal group to recruit MBA students?
Current MBA students reading this review - please don't let the last paragraph pointing out one area of weakness stop you from picking up and going through this book, and implementing its suggestions. Nail the Job is written for you and your needs, and it is very good!
Good luck in your job search!
