4 out of 5 stars Will it work?.......2007-01-04

As we all know, dealing with peers is one of the most difficult - but essential - skills our children need to learn. In a search for material that could be used for teaching effective problem-solving, assertive communication and negotiation skills, I discovered this book and ordered a copy. I found some of the ideas a bit silly-sounding but figured it might work with young children, so I have developed small "plays" using the book's dialogues to set up the scenarios for my kids to enact. They love it! Now I am expanding this activity to include all students from 1st-6th grade with the hope that learning these skills will help reduce bullying and enhance their communication skills. My only criticism is that the material presented in the book is a bit disjointed and hard to read. I'm not sure what audience the author was writing to, but I felt it too childish to be taken seriously as an adult and too abstract to hold the attention of a child; however, the basic principles are sound and the imagery of the language does appeal to the child in all of us.

5 out of 5 stars Important information for all kids.......2006-02-17

I agree with Dr. Ross's editorial review that "everything about this book is perfect for children." Speak Up and Get Along is a great resource to help kids survive and succeed especially in their social worlds at school. It is clear and easy for them to read. The best thing about it is that there are a lot examples of how to actually deal with bullying and teasing, arguments, peer pressure and making and keeping friends. Each chapter has easy tools for kids to use and the illustrations help. The chapter on talking back to negative thoughts was really helpful. It gives very specific ways that kids can do this. I really recommend this as a gift for the children in your life.

Communicating effectively--with a significant other, a roomful of colleagues, or an auditorium packed with strangers--can challenge even the most articulate. In Speak from the Heart, Emmy-winning broadcaster Steve Adubato maintains that success comes from the direct emotional connections you make with your audience. Using his own experiences, as well as those of a range of notables from Oprah Winfrey to Colin Powell, he offers specific ways to develop that bond in circumstances where it matters most. Adubato shows how public speakers can get a handle on their audience and their message, determine their key themes, and then outline them to encourage as interesting and engaging a delivery as possible. He explains how "talking without speaking" plays a vital role in communicative settings and offers tips on body language (gesture toward someone with an open hand, palm up, rather than a pointed index finger), first impressions ("the level of confidence you have is first seen in the way you hold your body"), and active listening (eye contact, gestures, and smiles all convey your interest). Adubato additionally applies these principles to casual business encounters, leadership situations, workplace teams, communication technology, customer service, and the particular considerations that gender often interjects. "Being a truly great communicator is not simply about being articulate," he writes. "It's about who can make an audience care about the message and find the words that touch not only the intellect but also the heart." His precise advice and suggested exercises should help anyone improve this critical skill. --Howard Rothman

In Speak from the Heart, Emmy Award-winning broadcaster, newspaper columnist, and motivational speaker Steve Adubato reveals the secrets to being a great communicator -- with a program that will dramatically change the way you talk, listen, and connect with others. Steve Adubato's life experiences, both professional and as a husband, son, brother, and father, have taught him invaluable lessons about the power of personal, sincere communication. In Speak from the Heart, he demonstrates that being a truly great communicator is not simply about being articulate or being a ""good talker."" It is not about fancy visuals and PowerPoint presentations, or hard-core sales pitches, or even who has the most facts, figures, and technical wizardry. What really counts is making an authentic connection with other people that comes not merely from the intellect but from the heart. If you want to make a lasting impact, Dr. Adubato shows you how to engage people through empathy and understanding, how to be a great listener, and how to make an audience -- whether one, one hundred, or one thousand people -- care about you and your message. He helps you to rely less on written speeches, teleprompters, and index cards full of too much forgettable information, and learn, instead, how to tell a compelling story and create excitement and enthusiasm. You will learn, for example, how to: Lecture less and engage more Communicate under pressure Make effective use of eye contact Develop a conversational style Inspire in a human, personal way Become comfortable with your core message Speak from the Heart will not only make it easier for you to communicate your message without being ignored or misunderstood; it will also improve your relationships with other people and help you to become more productive at work -- with more satisfaction and less stress.

    5 out of 5 stars Heartfelt Thanks.......2007-04-18

As a professional speaker, I long ago learned the secret of "speaking from the heart." And, most of the better books on public speaking do in fact make this among their most important points. But, by using this critical point as his book title, Steve Adubato has brought this important concept front and center. Loud and clear!

One of the things I liked most about this book was its excellent organization. The author connects with his great title by devoting the first part of the book to "Communicating with Passion." Then, the author drills down on the specific skills that support ones ability to speak with passion.

In an age where so many books are not well organized and therefore tax the reader with developing ones own analytical framework for the subject, this book lays out a sound framework for being a great communicator. The framework is then well supported by both theory, and anecdotes that serve to effectively drive home the learning point.

At the risk of being picky, my sole disappointment is that the author acknowledges some leading self improvement greats (e.g., Dyer, Robbins, et al) as among the very best speakers, but regretfully never shares what he thinks makes each of them such a standout. Is the only learning point from these greats that they speak from the heart? Personally, I believe each of those listed draws on many of the other points made by Adubato. Given the authors clear expertise, I would have benefited even more had he shared his insights into what makes those he learned from so great.

MMMMmmmm...so Steve, is that the sequel? "Speakers from the Heart"?? I am ready to preorder that gem.

He indicated at that time that he had reviewed over 300,000 speeches for organizations such as Xerox and the American Mangement Association. His course helped change my life for the better.

With time to spare and having always had an interest in astrology and natal charts in particular, I found this book in the local library and began to read. With the help of The Compleat Astrologer by Derek and Julia Parker to compile birth charts for myself, family and friends, I used Do You Speak Astrology? by Doe Donovan to interpret and understand these charts. This book enabled me as a beginner to get a grasp on the whole concept of birth charts very quickly. The explanations and illustrations were very simple and easy to follow which keeps the subject of astrology a lot of fun. It inspired me to read more about it. As far as the interpretations are concerned, I found them to be very accurate. I am now thinking of buying this book as there is too much in it to memorize or copy out. The book itself is lightweight and small enough to carry it around with you. Recommended for anyone with an interest in birth charts and astrology.

A MUST for all people doing Job Development. A great resource and guide for staff. I especially appreciate the emphasis on being person centered. There are strategies and resources in the book that are great assets to a team in assisting a person to find the right job. It is easy to read and offers many ideas for people to implement as they explore career opportunities. Very complete and you can see how implementing the strategies will lead to success in assisting people with their career development.

                            5 out of 5 stars Great Expectations.......2007-09-10

Again, Griffin-Hammis sets the bar high. This book, which attempts to teach art step by step, starts with the expectation that individuals with disabilities want to and can be economically self-sufficient. Providing real examples of how the road to successful employment is full of twists and turns, the tools in this book will be helpful to all job developers. But more importantly, they address this subject within the context of everything else in a person's life not treating employment as something extra, but as a part of life. If you can't work with Cary, Dave or Tammara in person, this is the next best thing.

                            5 out of 5 stars Best Practice.......2007-08-11

Once again Cary and Dave have reset the bar for best practice in supporting people with disbilities to gain economic power. Over the past few years supported employment has slipped back a bit and lost some credibility. This book will help all practitioners, educators, families to understand Customized Employment practice in a hands on nuts and bolts practical manner and get to the next level. This is a great tool for SE teams who are always on the road and have trouble with training. This book will also teach how to leverage many new funding sources!!!! 5 out of 5 stars The Job Developers Handbook .......2007-08-10

The handbook provides critical information for anyone interested in assiting persons w/disabilities with employment or career guidance. Well organized and written, the book includes contributions from professionals who have long been engaged in providing direct employment services to persons with disabilities. The book is what the subtitle suggest- practical tactics that stregthren the skill sets for a variety of persons interested in reversing years of chronic unemployment for folks with disabilities. I especially appreciated the details targeting working with families and in gaining organization commitment to customize job options for persons traditionally relegated to workshops or minimum wage jobs

                            Book Description

Fifteen percent or more of the population have learning disabilities (LD), attention deficit disorder (ADD), or both. These individuals, who are often perceived by career counselors and employers as frustrating or difficult, are uniquely vulnerable in a competitive job market. Because LD and ADD individuals have "invisible handicaps," their job performance and social behaviors can be interpreted incorrectly. As a consequence, problems arise that could be avoided. Mapping Careers with LD and ADD Clients is a user-friendly guidebook for career counselors and employers to help them deal productively with LD/ADD adults. For this reason, the book is useful as a supplementary text for graduate courses in career counseling.

Raizi Abby Janus synthesizes the two fields of LD/ADD diagnosis and career assessment into a comprehensive methodology. She provides the necessary background knowledge to enable social workers, psychiatrists, psychologists, guidance counselors, and human resources personnel to

                            • Recognize when an employee or client has a learning disability.

                            • Provide relevant guidance to these individuals.

                            • Optimize their job performance and productivity.

                            • Help clients attain a clarified sense of identity.

                            • Know when to refer clients to other professionals for further evaluation.

                            • Be able to suggest reasonable accommodations on the job in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

For employers and career counselors, rich anecdotal insights give the feel and look of the LD and ADD syndromes in daily life and at work. For researchers in the field of adult LD and ADD, the case studies in Mapping Careers make a major contribution by providing

                            • Thorough psychometric documentation of the cognitive, emotional, and personality profiles of adult LD and ADD individuals.

                            • Commonly encountered profiles, as well as those of a more complex nature.

Janus addresses the pitfalls of indiscriminately using normative tests of intellectual and personality functions, such as the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, 16 PF, and MMPI-2. She emphasizes the ways in which the application of normative methodologies to the LD/ADD client can be useless, misleading, or counterproductive. She also provides a useful methodology for interpreting these tests tailored to LD/ADD needs.

Janus has crystallized twenty years of experience in career counseling. In assessing a variety of clients, she has identified and worked with those whose LD/ADD is the source of their difficulties, as distinct from other causes.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for vocational rehabilitation counselors.......2004-03-26

According to research, individuals with Specific Learning Disabilities are the fastest growing population needing rehabilitation services. The techniques and approaches that work with most populations are usually ineffective for these individuals. Wide spread application of the information in this book could change outcomes and turn around the lives of many LD and ADD clients; people who will otherwise flounder throughout their working years.

3 out of 5 stars Mappingg Careers with LD and ADD Clients.......2000-06-17

This textbook is a very good source if you are or plan to work with this population. It provides good insights for someone not too familiar with working with the Learning Disabled. The material is presented in a very straight forward style. The book is divided between the case study approach and this is preceded by a guide to the "definitions", terms and characteristics that apply the clients. Everything that impacts on the employability of this population. Assessment tools are also discussed.
