5 out of 5 stars Put your dinero where your boca is..........2003-10-07

The reader from Atlanta really trashes this dictionary and takes care to provide some examples of the flaws discovered. I was surprised, because it was recommended to me by an official translator in Madrid and I was considering purchasing it. Given that the Atlanta reader doesn't like the Rutledge dictionary, I'd really appreciate his/her recommendation of a better dictionary to serve as reference for business translations, especially in the investment field. Thank you.

1 out of 5 stars Many, many errors.......1999-11-23

There are literally dozens of errors in this dictionary. "Banner year" is translated literally as "año insignia," which is nonsense in Spanish. "Mover and shaker" is also translated literally ("promotor e impulsor"). It's as though the author didn't understand English! Other absurdities are "herein" (aquí dentro--should be "en el presente"), hereunder (más abajo--should be "conforme al presente"), etc. Again, these are literal translations that do not fit in business or legal writing. "Judicial notice" which is actually "reconocimiento de hechos notorios" is translated as citación judicial--again, complete lack of understanding of the term. I'd stay away from this one like the plague.

5 out of 5 stars Best Spanish Commercial Dictionary.......1999-09-02

As a translator who specializes in financial and commerical texts, I can honestly say that the Routledge is the most complete dictionary I have found on the subject. There is nothing that compares to it.

    Book Description

This book provides an overview of two hundred years of German economic thought from the Steetswissenschaften of the eighteenth century to National Socialism and the Social Market. Whereas Classical Economics emphasized value, distribution and production, German economic thought had a long-running tradition of human need and the varying conditions for order. By taking this latter perspective, the usual contrast of market and planning approaches to economic organization is subsumed by an approach that focuses on the construction of order in economic processes.

    4 out of 5 stars Ja wohl!.......2007-05-20

I am grateful to Patrick Schmidt for having placed in my hands a copy of the third edition of his book on Understanding American and German Business Cultures: A Manager's Guide to the Cultural Context in which American and German Companies Operate. As is so often the case at SIETAR Congresses, we exchanged some goodies in the hotel lobby in Sofia, and I hope Patrick found mine as good as I found his.

While not a new publication, Patrick's book is nonetheless a very solid, simple, and useful expose of the cultural differences between the way we operate when working with each other and why, despite our best efforts we fall short of pleasing each other and fall into annoyances often over what often look like small matters.

Whether you are German or USian, you can get a good quick profile of your own culture to the degree that you subscribe to it--and most of us do at some level even when we want to rebel against it. This is not a comprehensive cultural study but a practical one, at the interface of how we work together, our sense of what work is, our work habits.

Schmidt addresses the most salient issues in how we communicate at work (and elsewhere, of course). What we understand and how we need to listen to understand as well as to present to each other in a way that we can understand are all dealt with in a matter of fact way with occasional excursions into the historical and psychologically whys. He provides an overview of such things as values, lawsuits and ethics across borders, and a discussion format about for exploring what it takes to be interculturally competent--and all this in less than 100 pages.

Appendixed to the manual are brief, incisive case studies from real life with analysis and likely interpretations. Like life itself, this treatment leaves the door open to engagement and learning on the part of those who use it. Updated several times, it shows the author's commitment to continued learning and exploration of the topic. I will find it an immediate resource for class work and training.

4 out of 5 stars One of the best books about the topic !.......2003-01-28

I'm German, but I have lived for some years in Maryland.

While I don't agree with every detail, I think most of the stated analyisis is true.

After reading plenty of books about German and American culture, I recommend this book as one (perhaps the) best about this issue in the market.

Even the book provided evidence about in the book mentioned cultural differences because it is much more sophicated and detailed than American books usually are.

4 out of 5 stars Great primer for newcomers, helpful to practitioners.......2001-09-03

The book is a great resource for any newcomer to the subject(s) at hand. For those of us with actual hands-on experience in dealing with both, German and U.S. culture, the book is very helpful as it solidifies and/or corrects one's own perceptions and impressions.

    4 out of 5 stars Uncovering semi-conscious attitudes.......2000-03-27

An edifying and amusing examination of the different business methods and attitudes to personal relations in the two countries. An eye-opener to the inbuilt assumptions which cause so many misunderstandings in professional and social life. A "must" for businesspeople who want to be global players.

3 out of 5 stars Very funny stereotypical stuff.......2000-03-15

I had to laugh when the author told us that one of the worse insults an American can give is someone is 'a total bore'. Otherwise, this book points out some interesting comparisons and contrasts between German and American cultures.

        Book Description

The history of consumption is a prism through which many aspects of social and political life may be viewed. The essays in this collection represent a variety of approaches and raise such themes as consumption and democracy, the development of a global economy, the role of the state, the centrality of consumption to Cold War politics, the importance of the Second World War as a historical divide, the language of consumption, the contexts of locality, race, ethnicity, gender, and class, and the environmental consequences of twentieth-century consumer society. They explore the role of the historian as social, political, and moral critic. Unlike other studies of twentieth-century consumption, this book provides international comparisons.

          Book Description

Pivoting on two world wars, intense political change has dramatically affected Germany's economic structure and development. This book traces the logic and the peculiarities of German economic development through the Weimar Republic, Third Reich, and Federal Republic. Providing a comprehensive analysis of the period, the book also assesses controversial issues, such as the origins of the Great Depression, the primacy of politics or economics in the decision to invade Poland, and the future risks to the Weltmeister economy of the Federal Republic oppressed by unemployment, the huge debts of some of its trading partners, and the possibility of worldwide protectionism.

2 out of 5 stars Understanding Cultural Differences: Germans, French, and Americans.......2007-02-28

An interesting book, but poorly written. Observations were useful but the book is so repetitious and muddled, it was hard to stay focused on it. Most of the source material was self-referential and seemingly based on surveys done in the 1980s. Worth a read, but keep expectations in check.

          5 out of 5 stars A Truly Useful Book.......2006-03-30

I read this book several years ago, in large part due to the fact that I had married a French woman and was having quite a bit of difficulty understanding the culture during my visits to France. Granted, this book largely focuses on the business aspects of the cultural divide, but I found it incredibly accurate as it relates to the culture as a whole. Especially useful was the description of a "polychronic" culture as opposed to a "monochronic" one like the U.S.
If you want to get to the root of the differences and gain an ability to work with others of France, Germany, or Japan, I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent guidelines and some practical value.......2002-01-31

The book provides excellent guidelines for Americans to compare German cultural values and behaviors against ours, but I am not sure about the French (lack of personal experience). It is quite general but you can learn a lot if you have the will to understand German corporate cultural rules and to gain the edge in your interactions with your German counterparts. My personal observations/experience during a recent business stay in Germany seemed to have mostly agreed with the authors' points of view.

I wish it had more real-life examples and illustrations for higher practical values.

I loved reading it through and would recommend it highly.

          5 out of 5 stars Extrodinary!.......2001-11-25

If you have little time to read about Doing business in Europe then this book is ideal choice. Well analysed and Excellent Presentation. Worth for my money sure your's too.

4 out of 5 stars A Must for anybody dealing with one of these three cultures.......2000-07-10

Anybody dealing with any of those three cultures in business should read this book. It is simple, handy and quite accurate. I am myself French and have been living and working in Germany for ten years now in an international environment. I also spent three years of my life in the US. The book - already ten years old - does need some up-dating as far as the political and economic situations in each of these three countries are concerned and I found a few inaccuracies in the French part (probably due to the fact that the French culture is more difficult to grasp for an American than the German one), but all in all it is a highly recommendable book. The key notions of "monochronic" and "polychronic", of "high context" and "low context" cultures are extremely useful. This is not only a book for Americans doing business with Europeans : as far as I am concerned it helped me understanding and being more patient with my American colleagues.

            Book Description

In a pioneering work, Jeffrey Fear overturns the dominant understanding of German management as "backward" relative to the U.S. and uncovers an autonomous and sophisticated German managerial tradition. Beginning with founder August Thyssen--the Andrew Carnegie of Germany--Fear traces the evolution of management inside the Thyssen-Konzern and the Vereinigte Stahlwerke (United Steel Works) between 1871 and 1934.

Fear focuses on the organization and internal dynamics of the company. He demonstrates that initiatives often flowed from middle managers, rather than from the top down. Shattering stereotypes of the overly bureaucratic and rigid German firm, Fear portrays a decentralized and flexible system that underscores the dynamic and entrepreneurial nature of German business. He fundamentally revises the scholarship on Alexander Gerschenkron and Germany's Sonderweg, and critiques Max Weber's concept of the corporation and capital accounting. He develops a loosely coupled relationship among enterprise strategy, organization, the structure of responsibility, and its accounting system, which links information, knowledge, and power inside the firm. This method of organizing control is central to understanding corporate governance.

Original and provocative, this work will generate much debate among historians, organizational theorists, and management and accounting scholars.

This is a translated collection of essays by a leading German economic historian on nineteenth and twentieth century Germany up to recent times. Though the articles were published originally in a variety of places, the issues dealt with are connected: economic growth, fluctuations, structural change, changes in socio-economic institutions and in the economic system as a whole, all in interaction with other historical phenomena.

                Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Full of good advice.......2006-12-20

I found the book to be packed with invaluable advice. I've only been a cop for about 6 months now, but I wish I had read the book before I became a cop.

The book offers great advice on choosing a department. It also has inspired me to write more reports and write them better.

One of the main points I took from the book was to never sacrafice your integrity.

I didn't like how the auther put a little introductory phrase before almost every single paragraph in the book. If he didn't do that, the book would probably only be 60 pages long.

5 out of 5 stars a must read for thoughtful young people entering police work.......2006-06-27

Barry Baker was a street cop for 20 years in a very tough town before taking promotion. He accurately reflects the central role of patrol - street work - and does not sugar-coat or avoid difficult issues. The conciseness of the book is a strength. His advice to young people is genuine and not idealistic or poorly informed. A nice job.

                    Description:
Police departments have come under increasing pressure from community groups, professional organizations, and their constituents to hire more female and minority officers. Although prior research suggested that there might be both gender and racial differences in the factors influencing the decision to enter police work, much of the work was dated and findings were mixed. The current research, conducted in spring 2002, examined motivations for entering police work among a sample of 278 academy recruits in the New York City Police Department (NYPD). Findings indicated that motivations for becoming a police officer were similar regardless of race or gender, and the most influential factors were altruistic and practical, specifically the opportunity to help others, job benefits, and security. Minor differences did emerge among male and female recruits, as well as among Whites, Hispanics, and African Americans, but the practical implications of those differences seemed limited. The article concludes with a discussion of implications for recruitment efforts as police departments seek to draw more diverse applicant pools and build more representative law enforcement agencies.
