Customer Reviews:
Read this book!.......2007-01-11
This is it a must read! I read Shifting Into Higher Gear a year ago and just recently picked it up an read it again. The lessons in this book will help you identify your true calling and lead you to a happier, heathier and more prosperous life.
Imminently Practical Roadmap.......2005-06-24
I was very pleasantly surprised at how well the authors translated theory into practical exercises and reflection, and how these tools naturally built on each other to deepen your insights. You will walk away from this book with a much better understanding of your core values and how to translate them into meaningful and fulfulling work and activity, even if you are not "looking" for a career move. This book makes a perfect gift for students or recent graduates, as well as producing a deeper understanding of self, and how to acutalize it in the most fulfulling ways, for those of us who are older.
Unique Addition to Career Pathfinding.......2005-05-27
"Shifting Into Higher Gear" will help my counseling of young men and women who are pondering their career options. It not only includes "how to get a job," but starts the journey by breaking ground in the much harder "based on my values, passions, and calling, which job(s) should [I] seek?"
Many people I counsel use relatively few parameters to evaluate work options. Money, prestige, and expediency direct most people. But if you're trying to add the critical dimensions of self-actualization and/or expressing God's work through your gifts, this is the book for you.
Included are a recap of what Spiritual Gifts are and how to combine them with deep interests to find your sweet spot. I'd also recommend Marcus Buckingham's "Now, Discover Your Strengths," because it complements these efforts. But Siciliano and Caliguire reach further. Their appropriately named book is a valuable addition to the space because it will help many people in their quest for "Shifting Into Higher Gear."
Read it twice!.......2005-05-25
I think Shifting into Higher Gear can be the starting point for finally finding the job or position that a person can be excited and passionate about. The authors do a great job of laying out the process and mindset needed to prepare for, find and keep the "right job". The focus on a person's spiritual health and the role it plays in your career made a particularly important impact on me. I have bought several copies of this book to give to my friends and associates who need that little nudge to make a move for a better career.
A Virtual One Stop Career Center.......2005-05-25
Shifting Into Higher Gear offers a pragmatic, contemporary approach to finding meaningful employment that's right for you. Presented like a Road Map for Success, you'll find this book to be an excellent resource as you frame your thought process and plan your next career move upward and onward. Bought several copies as gifts for recent college grads. A great value at $16.95.
Book Description
While formal quality management systems are a basic requirement for carriers doing business with the automotive industry, it is a company's understanding of key items such as leadership, continuous improvement, and customer satisfaction that is needed to survive and excel in today's market. Shifting Gears brings a unique approach to quality in the trucking industry, clearly defining the issues that challenge a carrier's very survival of business and, through the principles embodied in ISO 9000, discusses practical measures for addressing these challenges. It identifies ISO 9000 as an effective management tool, offering information on how business leaders can reduce their costs, improve their overall business efficiency, and improve their competitive advantage in the marketplace. This quality management principles book moves beyond quality management principles to include methods for use in day-to-day operations, helping carriers easily shift gears to make these tools a part of the company culture.
Customer Reviews:
Easy to read and informative.......2004-08-19
Of all the industries in the United States and around the world, few are as challenging as the transportation industry and more specifically, the trucking industry. Comprising 5% of the GDP and with over 70% of the cities and towns around the globe solely dependent on trucks to deliver their goods, trucking is truly the backbone of the economy. However, high insurance rates and fuel prices as well as a constant shortage of drivers have made running a trucking company a very difficult endeavor.
Although in use by many different industries, ISO and other quality programs are rarely used by trucking companies. In `Shifting Gears', the authors present case studies and easy-to-follow information that carriers and shippers can use to improve the processes related to shipping and trucking. Based on the premise that quality is a framework for improvement, the authors identify eight specific ISO quality management principles within the book:
Customer Focus
Leadership
Involvement of People
Process Approach
System Approach to Management
Continual Improvement
Factual Approach to Decision Making
Mutually Beneficial Supplier Relationships
Because the book is written in non-technical terms, trucking companies of all sizes will be able to learn and apply the lessons and advice within the book. Reading `Shifting Gears' will not make companies' experts in ISO 9000 but it will clearly explain the importance of structured quality programs and get them on the right path.
As someone who has spent the last 13 years in transportation and who is a certified Six Sigma Black Belt, I can attest that the trucking industry must embrace the quality principles of ISO and Six Sigma. Issues such as backhauls, revenue generation, freight pay and audit, OS&D, pick ups and deliveries, operating ratios, maintenance, etc., can be managed better through the use of a structured quality program such as ISO 9000.

HELPFUL.......2007-07-27
But a little dated. Be sure to also check out Ian Fisher's "How to Start a Career in Information Technology, 2nd edition" 2007.
Nothing really new here.......2004-01-27
If you want to get into IT, this book presents a great description of what it is really like to work in IT.
If you already work in IT, this book makes you feel better with similar frustrations from other people.
I already work in IT and I was not very interested in hearing other people complain about how overworked they are. Yeah, I know, I'm in the same boat.
Here's a better way to get your IT career in gear - get your degree and get certified in your area of interest. That's it, no secret, really.
Career-changers - Read this book!.......2003-05-25
I am writing this review to let all the potential career-changers out there know that they shouldn't be afraid of following their passion for computers.
"Get Your IT Career In Gear!" will help you see how you can leverage what you already know and create the rewarding career you have always wanted.
I am passionte about this book because a big part of my company exists to help people create rewarding, independent computer careers.
So, anyone who wants to learn about the requirements, hot job markets, everyday life, and how to get your first job, for almost all the computer careers out there, read this book!

finally!!!!.......2001-06-20
Succinct, authoritative, indispensable. One wonders where this book has been. Goff makes it seem so simple. Could it really be? But finally there is a voice that spells it out. A great read that we've waited for forever. A must for the changing marketplace.
So much great information!.......2001-06-20
This book is a must for all IT professionals! It contains information relevant to most, if not all, IT careers whether you are looking for changing your career or just keeping yourself marketable. Ms. Goff includes great interviews with people in all aspects of IT. The interviews include job descriptions, the good and bad parts to a particular position, and some helpful hints and ideas (there is a great interview with the creator of the Elvis Presley/Graceland web site!). Ms Goff introduces you to many IT careers and tells you what are the related skills you need for that position. She also helps you decide if a job is right for you (I really liked reading about the different postions and learning what skills are needed in each position and what type of person is usually good in that position). She gives examples and tells how people have successfully transitioned either into IT from other fields or parlayed their position into a new position. This book has given me ideas for keeping myself up to date and how to use what I know already to advance my career or change areas and how to decide what I want to do next.
Customer Reviews:
The best book on professional writing I've ever read........1998-05-31
This book doesn't give you tips on how to write, it leads you to develop the skills to become a much better, wiser writer. I think that, if you have ANY thing you would like to do better at, this book will help you.

definitive & priceless.......2002-06-16
Altho dated, this book is filled with extremely valuable tchnical information that any gearhead doing his own work or designing his own engine cannot be without. The author was a career auto teacher at a California community college and had the benefit of a shop full of the best equipment that taxpayer money can buy. He is/was a mastermind of the cam & valve & head modification art. Certain elements of science never change over time.. even tho the hotrod set continues to rediscover the old knowledge & proclaim it as new. this is one of those timeless tomes. You might not have access to all that great equipment, but your engine builders do. If you can find a copy buy it & never let it go.

Book Description
This introduction to electronics includes the latest technology, such as BI-MOS op-amps, BI-FETS, phase locked loops and switched capacitor filters. The text features a circuit-theoretic approach throughout, thus providing continuity with the prerequisite circuit analysis course. Avoiding and encyclopedic presentation, which often overwhelms students, the author focuses on basic topics of importance, covering them in a manner appropriate to the level of the student's background. Emphasis is on simplified analysis technique with a view towards a preliminary design.
