The indispensable resource for health professionals on potentially unsafe chemicals--now fully updated
Proctor and Hughes' Chemical Hazards of the Workplace, Fifth Edition provides a comprehensive reference text for health professionals who need toxicology data on chemicals that may be encountered in various work settings. Building on the success of the Fourth Edition-already a standard text-this new edition updates and revises the more than 600 entries of that text, and also adds monographs on new compounds.
Introductory chapters cover toxicological concepts, clinical manifestations of exposure, the diagnosis of occupational disease, and industrial hygiene aspects of chemical exposures. The rest of the text consists of more than 625 alphabetically arranged entries on individual compounds, each of which includes:
* Chemical formula
* CAS number
* 2003 ACGIH (American Conference of Government Industrial Hygienists) threshold limit value
* Synonyms
* Physical properties
* Sources of exposure
* Routes of exposure
* Toxicological data
The toxicological data includes both acute and chronic effects, especially as related to any known exposure levels. The data emphasizes human studies and cases over animal data whenever sufficient information is available, and addresses any known carcinogenic, mutagenic, fetotoxic, or other reproductive effects. Clinical information is presented in a succinct narrative form to aid in understanding.
Easy to use, in-depth, and comprehensive, Proctor and Hughes' Chemical Hazards of the Workplace, Fifth Edition offers occupational health physicians, nurses, industrial hygienists, and other safety professionals an invaluable and up-to-date resource.

Book Description
Reproductive Hazards of the Workplace Linda M. Frazier, MD, MPH Marvin L. Hage, MD In the face of rising medical costs, health care reform, intense media scrutiny, and the trend toward delayed pregnancies, the concern over on-the-job reproductive hazards is at an all-time high. The need to develop effective strategies for protecting the reproductive health of employeesfemale and maleis more critical than ever. Reproductive Hazards of the Workplace is designed to help managers, primary care physicians, and health and safety professionals manage and prevent occupational reproductive risks. Like other entries in Van Nostrand Reinhold's Hazards of the Workplace series, the book offers a wealth of valuable, up-to-date information plus expert-tested methodologies and advice for handling risk exposure. Reproductive Hazards of the Workplace begins by covering basic reproductive and developmental biology and fundamentals of risk assessment and reduction. It shows readers how to take into account influencing factors such as the employee's age, personal habits, and existing conditions (such as diabetes and hypertension). From this foundation, the text explains how to recognize and manage a wide range of potential threats to reproductive health, including:
- Chemical agents
- Physical agents
- Biologic agents
- Ergonomic factors
- Travel
- Stress
In describing reproductive risks involving these common occupational exposures, thorough coverage is provided of an often-ignored subject: reproductive hazards to men. Reproductive Hazards of the Workplace offers a variety of features to help readers use the material. Key tables, references, sample patient encounter forms, and occupational exposure guidelines add to the book's functionality. With this book, physicians, nurses, corporate personnel, and safety professionals have an expert resource focused exclusively on a crucial aspect of occupational health management. As an introductory text, a review volume, or a convenient sourcebook, Reproductive Hazards of the Workplace is a welcome addition to any safety professional's library.

Customer Reviews:
Achingly Funny.......2007-04-19
I bought this book because the title sounded fun. I like this sort of mental popcorn. I had no idea it would be THIS funny. I laughed out loud often and hard enough to have to put the book down on several occasions... I had to wipe the tears of mirth. Yes, he rips on a few songs I like. And Genesis (he's obviously not heard the longer cuts from more recent albums; Driving the Last Spike isn't lounge band stuff). But he does have points, even about songs I like... these are depressing, remember, not neccessarily bad. The chapter on "The End" had me laughing for five minutes after I finished reading it. I have not had so much fun with a book in a long time. Need a good guffaw? get this book!
Laugh out loud funny...........2007-04-09
There are few books that make you laugh from beginning to end. This is one such book. Tom Reynolds has identified 52 of the most depressing songs ever made. Wisely, he has limited himself to one song per artist (leading to tough choices, as he admits, when selecting songs for groups such as The Cure and Nine Inch Nails). He then provides his critiques of each song.
Are his choices fair? Well, all such lists are subjective, and there were certainly songs that made the cut that I like more than Mr. Reynolds does. But that's part of the fun of making these lists. And Reynolds commentary is hilarious from beginning to end. Sure, he occasionally misses the point of a song or gets caught up in his own prose, but on balance this is the funniest book on rock music I have read.
I only hope that Reynolds decides to do a follow up - I would buy it.
you may not be that familiar with most of his selections.......2007-02-15
A humorous collection and analysis of some of the most depressing songs released over the last 50 years. Reynolds not only has a knack for breaking down songs to their core, but he also does it in a way that you'll be laughing along with him, even though the songs author's were probably dead serious when they wrote them. Reynolds' breaks the songs down into various categories of depression. The only problem I had with his choice of songs were that they were based around Reynolds' childhood. So unless your a music fanatic, or born around his age range, you may not be that familiar with most of his selections. A great book either way.
Light, witty entertainment.......2006-12-21
I initially purchased this book to read on the bus to work, however since starting it I haven't been able to put it down! It's a light-hearted, witty romp through some of the most tragic songs to assault our airwaves. Of course it is not a comprehensive list, but it is a good selection of genre's & era's
This book isn't going to change you life, but it will put a smile on your face & lets face it, that can't be a bad thing.
So instead of being tight-fisted & trying to gauge a book from flicking through it in a bookstore, just buy the thing & chuckle your way through the 308 pages.
P.S. as a treat, download the 52 songs & listen to them as a companion piece to the book .... doubles the pleasure!
DUH!.......2006-10-19
OK, I'd half-listened to a radio interview with this guy, so when I saw the book in the bookstore, I flipped through it for a couple of minutes. Here's my comment: HE NEVER GOT THAT BEN FOLDS'S "BRICK" IS ABOUT AN ABORTION!!! Darned right it's depressing, but, contary to Reynolds's critique, the story does make sense. Not that I expect every average listener to pick up on that, but surely if you're writing about it you should put more than an average effort into understanding the lyrics, shouldn't you? I mean, go back and listen to the song again and you're gonna say, oh, geeze, how did I miss that? So why would you bother reading the rest of the book?
