Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Perfect if it fits the bill for you.......2007-10-01

This book is too basic and repetitive for experienced presenters, but extremely useful for those who are very new to the field, lack confidence, and/or are non-native speakers of English. It presents exact phrases, even entire speeches, for a variety of situations (including formal events). This can be great jumping-off point if you're unsure of yourself in this kind of situation. Although not written for this particular purpose, the book is an excellent choice for any international businessperson who is new to making presentations to Americans and is not 100% confident speaking in English.

3 out of 5 stars Extensive but tired.......2007-05-30

This work has a wide variety of phrases but many have become tired from over-use. It's a good place to start but don't look to it for fresh ideas.

5 out of 5 stars Full of helpful tips.......2007-08-18

Maxey and O'Conner's experience with public speaking provides the reader with useful tips and concrete examples without being "gimmicky". Their book is easy to read and allows you to pick and choose what applies to your particular 'speaking' circumstance. The authors give you lots to think about as you prepare your own speeches, presentations, or lectures. As a university professor, I really got a lot out of the book.

5 out of 5 stars A Must-Have for anyone who wants to speak.......2007-07-27

What a great book!!!!!! This book covers every tip anyone needs to know to be successful in speaking infront of a group. The way the book is designed, you can take whatever chapters you need and use it as a resource or reference everytime you speak. Great to read when you don't have much time but need a lot of infomation. It doesn't get any better than this!!!

    5 out of 5 stars Presentationally Perfect.......2007-06-20

In reading the entire book in 2 sittings, I can say that I found the content to be engaging, pragmatic, and very timely solution to some of my current issues around presenting.

Yes, it is a lot of information, but the book doesn't feel unapproachable. Nor is it a "presenting for dummy's" kind of book. Good balance between too much information and too little.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Practical Advice!.......2007-05-30

This book is without a doubt the best available advice on presenting and speaking. As a professional speaker myself, I use it as a reference guide before every speech. Maxey and O'Connor (combined) speak more than 200 times per year. They have made the mistakes and learned the lessons the hard way. All you need to do is read "Present Like a Pro" to learn from these two highly successful professionals.

    Cyndi and Kevin teach you:

How to prepare for a great presentation
How to quickly connect with your audience
How to gracefully handle A/V malfunctions
    How to increase audience participation
    How to deal with hecklers
    How to follow-up
    and more

As a reference guide for my own speech preparation, this book never leaves my desk!

It's easy-to-read and easy-to-use. Join the hundreds of professional speakers who use Maxey and O'Connor's book for great speeches.

    5 out of 5 stars Fabulous!.......2007-03-30

There is so much bad advice out there on how to present, mostly from people who "think" they know what to do. Maxey and O'Connor have "done it", with every type of audience and industry. 45 years of real world experience. They absolutely make sense to me on what actually works! This is the definitive book on presenting in my opinion. It doesn't matter whether you are presenting to a large or small group, giving a talk at a wedding or a local business group, it is about the audience and that connection. It is a series of one on one conversations!

The earliest examples date from the reign of King Ptolemy II Philadelphus and the latest from the government by the Arabs after their conquest of Egypt in 639-641 CE.

Edicts and Orders, 26. Public Announcements, 6. Reports of Meetings, 3. Official Acts and Inquiries, 5. Judicial Business, 18. Petitions and Applications, 44. Declarations to Officials, 30. The genuine nugget in this book is its use of the Enneagram to move forward the original Center for Creative Leaderhip research about what derails successful professionals. Lapid-Bogna's gift is to communicate the most profound and deeply thoughtful insights with deceptively casual language. I agree it needs to be read twice: Once to understand the techniques it describes, and a second time to appreciate how she builds on her hard-earned understanding of what works and doesn't work in OD and career development. Then, consider reading it a third time to appreciate the Enneagram for the doors it opens to truly deep personal growth. Not just another book written as a practice-building marketing piece for the author. It contains enough material for at least two books.

5 out of 5 stars The most practical enneagram book out there for business applications.......2005-10-03

I love this book. I am an executive coach and I find this very useful for helping my Enneagram-aware clients apply the model directly and quickly to work situations -- to help debug relationships, communications, conflilct, etc.

I especially like Lapid-Bogda's distinctions and examples around "Pinch" and "Crunch" for each of the types.

I don't know of any other books except Michael Goldberg's "The Nine Ways of Working" that fill this business-application niche quite so well.

Highly recommended for those who need a practical, hands-on way of using the Ennegram in day to day work interactions.

Finally a groundbreaking book on the 9 ways of working that can be handed to your HR director! Enneagram Personality System books started being published in the 1980's; not until now has there been one that systematically applies this system to organizations. As an organization development consultant, I have always found the enneagram to be essential to my executive coaching and development. Now, in a practical and most excellent way, Lapid-Bogda applies the system to all key areas of organization life-- including employee feedback, conflict in teams, leadership and team development, etc. You can take the applications and use them immediately on the change initiatives you already have underway in your orgaization-- such as your 360 degree feedback sessions.

Not only does Lapid-Bogda make it easy for you to apply this system, but once familiar with her book and work, the reader can order tailor made tools that go with each organization topic that will further assist your ease of application.

If you are "stuck" in your own personal career development or trying to lead others in theirs-- and looking for a breakthrough-- then buy this book!

"Bringing Out the Best in Yourself at Work" is very much a must read for anyone interested in improving their relationships at work and in life in general.

5 out of 5 stars Personality Traits in the Business Environment.......2004-09-01

This is a book on using the Enneagram system specifically oriented to todays business environment. The Enneagram is not unlike other personality oriented systems. First an individual is asked to examine nine different personality types and to identify himself with one. Then the Enneagram, a diagram of the interaction of the various types can be used to predict behavior.

The book, however, reverses the normal trend in personality testing books where the book is organized around the personality type. Instead the book describes several common business situations and then describes how the various personality types react to the situation.

                  Book Description

What are the individual and organizational influences on career choices and adult development?

Careers In and Out of Organizations provides an overview of the changing context of careers and describes the role of interpersonal relationships as influences on development of a person’s identity and learning. The author examines the nature of the new career contract and the different approaches that have been taken to studying career decision making. He explores how career choices are made, the developmental stages people pass through during the course of their working lives in organizations, and the factors related to career effectiveness including integrating career and personal life. The latter third of the book turns from research to the practical issues involved in applying theory including a look at how an understanding of career dynamics can be employed to make careers work better for individuals and for the work communities where they are employed.

3 out of 5 stars Where was the editor for this book?.......2007-05-02

As a professional writer myself, I admit that I have higher standards than most when reading books, but textbooks in particular seem to be getting worse, and this one is no exception.

While there is a lot of good information in this book, it's very redundant -- the same information is beaten to death. Ironically, the reverse is also true. Information, particularly graphics, are brought in to the mix but never discussed in any meaningful way (like the 'career involvement' graphic in chapter 6).

There is virtually no discussion about workers who are not in management -- the focus seems to be those people working in corporate America at a manager level or higher -- outside of talking about priests, there is little information on careers outside of this realm.

Additionally, I found the book to be quite sexist with a definite slant toward white male bias, especially in the passages that infer (if not outright state) that those who do not make Career (with a capital C) the primary focus of their lives are somehow inferior. This thinking is woefully outdated -- just ask any mom who works outside of the home, any adult taking care of an older parent, or anyone who is actively involved in their family or community.

He says a lot without really saying anything useful in this book. It starts well enough with a few examples, but he never really goes anywhere with them.

5 out of 5 stars Not published in 2003.......2007-02-27

This is a classical book in the area of HRM in M&As. However, this book is not a new version of Buono & Bowditch (1989). It is just a reprint in 2003. So if you are looking for new references of recent studies, you will not find it here...
I think amazon should change March 2003 phrase next to the title since it is misleading.
