This book has been an excellent help for me in my studies. The chapters are clear and concise. The diagrams are well drawn and the examples used provide further understanding of the subject matter.

Excellent Book, Nice Examples for Op-Amps.......2001-08-25

You don't need to look very hard to find some good examples in this book.The author has done a great job with the layout in the book.The methods for design and component selection are excellent.The math is always there, but not overly difficult.Some chapters I have skiped over, while others I have read 3 or 4 times.The approach the author takes to constructing active filters takes minimal effort with reasonable results for any design.Troubleshooting op-amp circuits is not always easy, but David Terrell explains details from the manufacturer data sheets which commonly fail amoung alot of the different families of op-amps. Some of the technical points are brief, but are helpful in all cases where your using them.I buy alot of engineering books each year.There's no myth or magic when designing with op-amps, but everthing you wanted to know is here.

This is a great reference book. Starting with Op Amp Basics (chapter 1) and continuing on with Instrumentation amps, Op Amps used in data converters and signal conditioning, the book is full of valuable information. The book even covers PCB layout techniques and parasitic effects that become important in high speed systems and precision systems. There is also a history of the Op Amp which is interesting to read.
Anyone interested in analog circuit design in general, and op amps in particular will enjoy this book. It is a good reference for any engineer's bookshelf.

Excellent Reference: Technical and Historical.......2005-08-02

This is a great textbook for electrical engineers and hobbyists with fundamental knowledge of op-amp operation. The text is easy to read and explains concepts that are understandable for both the inexperienced and experienced engineer and also gives an excellent historical treatment of op-amp evolution. The mathematics involved is concise and to the point. This text gives engineers tools to understand the op-amp beyond the ideal models presented in basic circuit theory and electronics courses given in undergraduate programs. To apply op-amps properly, you need to go beyond the simplistic assuptions - this book will help you given you have an understanding of basic electronics design and analysis. I highly recommend having this book on your shelf for a reference.

You'll have to tear it from my cold, dead hands..........2004-12-17

I've used 3 editions of the author's Op Amp Cookbook over the last 15 years, and found it to be an invaluable source of practical designs, accompanied by solid descriptions of the underlying principles. Based on that experience, I expected this book to be good. I am by no means disappointed.

It isn't a cookbook, although it does include many useful concrete design examples. It is more of an applications problem-solving guide. I've often found that some of the most useful op amp design information is buried in specific device datasheets and application notes, and have often found myself wishing someone would extract all of those nuggets, organize them, fill in the gaps, and publish them. As I read through this book, I found many such nuggets (primarily derived from Analog Devices' datasheets and app notes), which I had previously regarded as hidden treasure, uncovered only by tedious slogging through numerous datasheets. This is not, however, a re-packaging of previously published app notes. The chapters are comprehensive, well-written, and well-integrated.

Those interested in audio applications may remember that the original edition of the author's Op Amp Cookbook contained an extremely useful chapter on audio circuits. In the second edition, this material was extracted and published in a separate book, which (unfortunately) went out of print and has become hard to find. You will be happy to note that the new Applications Handbook has excellent coverage of audio op amp applications and design principles.

The author covers a lot of theory and practical circuits in the book, in excruciating detail. My hat is off to the depth of the mathematical derivations. If this book had color illustrations and explanations that are more qualitative in nature, this would be a five star book. I hope the author considers doing it over in color and with qualitative explantions thay will demystify Op Amp Operation.

H-infinity engineering continues to establish itself as a discipline of applied mathematics. As such, this extensively illustrated monograph makes a significant application of H-infinity theory to electronic amplifier design, demonstrating how recent developments in H-infinity engineering equip amplifier designers with new tools and avenues for research.

The amplification of a weak, noisy, wideband signal is a canonical problem in electrical engineering. Given an amplifier, matching circuits must be designed to maximize gain, minimize noise, and guarantee stability. These competing design objectives constitute a multiobjective optimization problem. Because the matching circuits are H-infinity functions, amplifier design is really a problem in H-infinity multiobjective optimization.

To foster this blend of mathematics and engineering, the author begins with a careful review of required circuit theory for the applied mathematician. Similarly, a review of necessary H-infinity theory is provided for the electrical engineer having some background in control theory. The presentation emphasizes how to (1) compute the best possible performance available from any matching circuits; (2) benchmark existing matching solutions; and (3) generalize results to multiple amplifiers.

As the monograph develops, many research directions are pointed out for both disciplines. The physical meaning of a mathematical problem is made explicit for the mathematician, while circuit problems are presented in the H-infinity framework for the engineer. A final chapter organizes these research topics into a collection of open problems ranging from electrical engineering, numerical implementations, and generalizations to H-infinity theory.

I have not finished the book yet. But I appreciate the approach taken by Dr. Allen. Although written with the engineer in mind, the book right away associates the filter formalisms to the rich body of knowlege of analytic functions. It aims to connect the analytic character of real filters to the rich and mature theory. Don't fret! It's not an intro monologue. Rather, it's concise and comprehensive. For the mathematically inclined wishing to learn filter theory, this book is for you. Or for the math-savy engineer wishing to add electrical engineering depth, this book is also for you. But for the uninitiated and/or weak hearted, this book may benefit you.

Graeme explains the basic usages of op amps. How to hook them up in various circuits. Plus the common properties that parameterise a given op amp. Like transconductance, transimpedance, common mode rejection ratio and the minimum stable gain.

Probably the two most important modalities get a chapter each. On using an op amp for voltage gain, and for current gain. En route, you can see how easy it is to hook up an op amp as an inverting or non-inverting amplifier.

There is no significant modelling of the inside of a transistor. Black box. So the discussion is independent of whether you have a bipolar or CMOS device. And this lets the text avoid explaining given models, like the Ebers-Moll for a bipolar.
