5 out of 5 stars If you are buying one financial book this year, this is it........2003-04-22

As a practicing Certified Financial Planner (CFP®) and Chairman of the Financial Planning Association of MA, I am asked quite often to recommend a book that touches on one's finances without being too technical or boring. "Let's Talk Money" does the job better than any other book I have come across. (And believe me, I've read and reviewed more than you can imagine). This book touches on a variety of topics that effect 99% of the public. Sure there may be books with catchier titles like..."How I made a million dollars in 3 weeks" but if you are looking for real practical advice that's actually fun to read, this book can't be beat.

5 out of 5 stars A personal financial guide that's like talking to friend.......2000-05-07

I happen to be a Certified Financial Planner licensee, and one component of my business is educating employees of corporations across the country on a variety of personal finance subjects. During, or at the conclusion of workshops, I am often asked by employees to recommend a good book that will assist them with taking control, or learning more about personal finance. Until now I never felt there was one particular book that actually approached and explained the subjects in a way most people can relate and would motivate them to learn more. Most other personal finance books, though they may be comprehensive, are dry and aren't written in a style people who are not in the profession can relate to. This is not the case with Let's Talk Money! Its nice to have a book that I can strongly recommend. Kudos to the authors!

      5 out of 5 stars Let's Talk Money.......2000-04-07

What a wonderful book! The structure is such that you can read it straight through or just reference a particular area of interest. It is so easy to read, too. Not something usually attributed to a Financial book!

I would recommend this book to novices and savvy financial people alike. For the novice, it is a wonderful guide to getting started. Many people feel overwhelmed when veiwing their personal financial lives, asking "where do I start"? This book will get you started in a very straighforward manner and then give you great tips for how to proceed.

At the same time, Let's Talk Money is very helpful for people who are more fiancially savvy. It serves as a reminder of things they should do, may give them some new ideas, and serve as a reference guide going forward.

Either way, this is a must read! I enjoyed it immensely!

5 out of 5 stars A must read for people getting their act together..........2000-04-06

I am not someone who wants to spend hours on end figuring out how to make my money work for me. Being a single mom, I need the facts and easy steps to get me through how to make my family stable. Chapters 1 - 4 made things simple and easy for me to figure out where I was and what action I needed to take next.

5 out of 5 stars A simple and easy to follow "how to" for financial security.......2000-04-04

As a financial planner, I often browse the bookstore section on financial planning to see what is offered. This section has exploded, as financial planning seems to have become the hot topic in this age of growing retirement funds and stock options. How does the buyer in need of help choose the right book from so many? The answer is Let's Talk Money: Your Complete Personal Finance Guide by Dee Lee and David Caruso. This book is different.

Most books on financial planning talk about what the consumer should do, with a lot of theories about how to manage money. The consumer still does not know where to start or what to do next. This book goes beyond theory and provides a road map, with checklists and easy to use forms. The organization of the book allows the buyer to use any section independently to solve a financial problem or to use the whole book to put a game plan in place. It is this versatility that makes it a great resource for the financially confused.

This is also a book written by practicing financial planners, and it shows. The authors used their experience with clients to answer the most commonly asked questions and to provide clear and easy to follow solutions. All in all, this is a book for anyone trying to make sense of the many financial decisions that we all face today.

        Book Description

Let's Talk Patents is patent primer. It explains in short order what small business owners, inventors, and entrepreneurs need to know to protect their ideas and leverage them in this information age. Not another "how-to" book, Let's Talk Patents explains in easy-to-read format such issues as who owns the patent rights, patent infringement and enforcement, and how not to compromise your patent rights. The book also includes a table of the costs involved (including attorneys fees), illustrated examples of patent infringement, and a comparison of patents to trademarks, copyrights, and trade secrets.

This book is targeted for businesspeople, written by a registered patent attorney experienced with the trails and tribulations of small businesses. It is clearly and simply written, avoiding legalese and extraneous information typical of books about patents.

5 out of 5 stars With "Let's Talk Patents" you'll be armed and ready.......2003-05-23

The sub-title for "Let's Talk Patents" tells us it's a patent primer for "Busy Corporate Managers and Entrepreneurs." What it does not say is that it is also a primer for any inventor who would throw off the cloak of ignorance.

Why? Because ignorance of patent law [ignorance: not having knowledge of a certain thing] may lead to unintended forfeiture of patent rights, or worse, being scammed out of money the inventor cannot afford.

Anyone who might be put off by the word "primer" must consider -- where do you get your knowledge of patents now? In High School or College? Not likely. Only a couple conventional colleges in the U.S. even have courses on inventing and patenting. So how does one learn about this vital subject? From TV ads? Advice from a brother-in-law? Some business article or column you read years ago? Unfortunately, the answer is too often, yes. That's a pretty meager education on a subject that may change one's life... Now perhaps a "patent primer" is starting to make more sense? Especially if you would rather not appear too stupid when you do reach that point where you need to talk to a patent attorney.

Let's assume you are a fairly typical problem solver, manager, or free thinker, and maybe even a grasp of the concept of invention -- patent -- money. Most everyone does. But if words or phrases like "intellectual property rights", "prior art", "doctrine of equivalents", "disclosure", or "infringement" are not a part of your vocabulary, you can offer a big Thank You to Ms. Etherton for writing and publishing "Let's Talk Patents." She is a registered patent attorney, but because she avoided writing it in "lawyer-ease," your ignorance is about to dissipate.

Upon opening her book and looking at the list of contents, "WOW" would be an automatic response. You may not have ever pondered questions about "Statutory Invention Registration" or "Direct and Indirect Infringement" but now, all of a sudden, you realize you are holding in your hands not just a book about patent education, but a real reference jewel. "Let's Talk Patents" suddenly becomes a valuable resource for information -- for you!

Before even finishing the first chapter, there's another revelation: "Let's Talk Patents" could easily have created a high intimidation response by being another compendium of dry, factual pages. But oh no, it's not... In fact, Ms. Etheron's style is so direct --so clear -- that her teaching examples make it very easy for us to relate to things we already know. Who could not relate to: "walking into a dark alley unarmed" and "red flat" or "...it's usually the money, who has it and who gets it."

Her straight talk, easy language and understandable examples, such as the problems of two competing bicycle manufactures, pull the reader along so smoothly they may not be aware of how much they're learning. That's talent.

After Etherton's book, when someone says "Let's Talk Patents" you will be armed and ready.

4 out of 5 stars Good Info - Good Place to Start.......2002-11-20

Sandra has done a very good job of presenting a complex subject in a very approachable manner. While not exhaustive, this book will give you a good basic understanding of patents and how they can help a business reach its goals.

4 out of 5 stars An easy to understand overview of patents........2002-10-18

This little book tells you: what patents can and cannot do for you; how and whether to apply for a patent; how long a patent can protect your idea; the cost and time required to get a patent; etc. The writing is informal with clear examples and minimum jargon. It can be read quickly to provide good advice before deciding on whether to try to get a patent.

It's impossible to think of the modern conservative movement without the deep influence of William F. Buckley Jr., founder of National Review and host of the television series Firing Line. Yet Buckley's evangelizing didn't just occur on the printed page or go out on the airwaves; he gave countless numbers of speeches during the second half of the 20th century. Several dozen of the most significant are collected in Let Us Talk of Many Things, from a 1950 address at Yale University hinting at themes that would be developed fully in God and Man at Yale to a 1999 talk to the Heritage Foundation (on the meaning of heritage, appropriately enough). In between, there are comments on Joseph McCarthy, Barry Goldwater, Ronald Reagan, Margaret Thatcher, the failure of the drug war--and on and on and on.

In its way, the book provides a history of American conservative politics, as well as a witty primer on what those politics are all about. One example: "Politics, it has been said, is the preoccupation of the quarter-educated, and I do most solidly endorse that observation, and therefore curse this century above all things for its having given all sentient beings very little alternative than to occupy themselves with politics. It is very well to say we will ignore the Great Society. But will the Great Society repay us our courtesy by ignoring us?" In another speech, delivered shortly after the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. and at a time when many Americans turned stoutly pessimistic about their own country, Buckley turned matters on their head: "That is the salient datum in America: not that we bred the aberrant assassins of John Kennedy and Martin Luther King, but that we bred the widely shared and the most intensely felt sense of grief: such grief over the loss of Mr. Kennedy and Mr. King as is felt over the loss of one's own sons." The statement is vintage Buckley: the old-fashioned use of the word datum, two colons in a single sentence, and a comforting faith in the United States. There's also an insightful and hilarious essay, which first appeared in The New Yorker, describing a life on the lecture circuit, complete with tips on how to make sure undergraduates driving you to the airport the next morning arrive at your hotel on time. This is a simply wonderful book by one of America's premier public intellectuals. --John J. Miller

          Book Description

William F. Buckley Jr. has long been admired for his remarkable gifts as a writer, debater, and orator. The man who helped ignite the modern conservative movement has for the past fifty years played a significant role in the great social debates that have shaped our country and indeed the world. In the course of his long career, he has given hundreds of speeches to generations of listeners.

"A veritable treasure house. This book has long been awaited by those of us addicted to Buckley's profound, elegant, and witty commentary on the twentieth century."
          — Henry A. Kissinge

He has talked of many things—from the Cold War to the passing of dear friends, from moral decay to the joys of sailing the open seas, from the defense of liberty to the comfort of faith. Here, collected for the first time, are Buckley's most memorable speeches, spanning five decades—from the precocious Yale student's Class Day address in 1950 to the elder commentator's accumulated wisdom at century's end. The speeches are one-of-a-kind snapshots that capture the breadth and depth of the ideological wars fought during our country's most turbulent days. They are also richly worded masterpieces of wit, eloquence, and persuasion.

Including new commentary from the author that provides historical context for his speeches, this book is a celebration of an extraordinary public life.

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The first- rate work of a first- rate human being .......2007-01-14

William Buckley Jr. is an individual who changed the course of history. As an undergraduate at Yale he dared to challenge the liberal domination of American political life and thought. He began his long and courageous path as spokesman for a wholly different way of thinking about America and the world, one in which patriotism, religious faith, emphasis on the free market, had a central place.
In this book of speeches we have a select group of the hundreds he has given over nearly fifty years as a political intellectual. Buckley is a man of broad liberal education who has a wide range of interests from Sailing to the playing of the Harpsichord. However his main work through all the years as dominating spiritual presence of 'National Review' and as writer of many books in many genres has been to promote the Conservative agenda for America.
I nonetheless found this work to be filled with moving personal tributes to many of his friends. These include ideological opponents like John Kenneth Galbraith and figures of distinction such as Henry Kissinger,
Walter Chronkite , Milton Freedman, James Burnham, Frederich Hayek, Henry Regnery
Buckley also makes a moving speech about his brother James Buckley. He is described as a person of total honesty and integrity. Buckley also has good things to say about the apple that did not fall from the tree, the novelist and writer Christopher Buckley.
One of the most moving passages in the book is speech at the funeral of long- time friend Richard Clurman.
" It came to me last Thursday, when just after midnight my son reached me at the hotel, that I have always subconsciously looked out for the total Christian, and when I found him,he turned out to be a nonpracticing Jew. It will require the balance of my own lifetime to requite what he gave to me"
These are the speeches of an important political thinker writer and journalist but also of a person whose life has embodied values of family and friendship which are taught by his own thought.
I should also add that over five decades of speeches touch upon a broad variety of public issues in which agree with him or not, Buckley's remarks always address with imagination and interest.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting look at an interesting man........2004-12-06

I don't always agree with what Mr. Buckley has to say; our political tendancies, while not diametrically opposed, are certainly not aligned to any great degree. But he is always interesting, and always well-spoken and erudite. If one wants a look at the thinking behind the Conservative movement, there may be no better place to look than right here.

          5 out of 5 stars Buckley is a genius.......2004-09-27

Buckley always makes me think. He is a master orator, and these essays are thought-provoking, as is his usual style. I highly recommend this book, the essays included cover a large period of time in his history as an orator, and you'll be reminded of many substantive events in our history. Great book, extremely well written.

5 out of 5 stars The Man Who Saved Classical Liberalism.......2002-04-10

William F. Buckley may be the most influential American writer of the second half of the 20th century. A strong statement, but think about it. When he wielded his pen he defended freedom in an era when that concept was beginning to be considered passe. He famously jumped "athwart history, yelling 'stop!" With his elegant, cosmopolitan prose he made consevativism intellectually respectable. He advocated a philosophy that was faith-based, yet humane and rigorously inqusitive about the world. And he's one of the funniest damn writers around. One of his greatest contributions in the 1950's and 60's was his adamant insistence that anti-Semites, racists, and extremists like the John Birch Society weren't a legitimate part of the consevative movement. This advocacy of tolerance and respect for rationality sprang from the charity that comes from a properly understood religious faith. He always strongly supported Israel as the vessel of Western values in a dangerous part of the world.

This is a collection of speeches that Buckley gave over the course of a 40-year career. Because they were meant to be heard instead of read, they are more informal and less intimidating than some of his other work. One can find here a rich slice of recent American history from the perspective of one of the good guys.

4 out of 5 stars Covers five decades.......2001-08-23

This book contains 94 of conservative pundit William F. Buckley's speeches from five decades, the 1950s through the 1990s. The 25 speeches from the '50s and '60s are very good and show Buckley at his best as a passionate conservative joining the current-affairs battles of those decades. The speeches from the later decades are uneven; by this point Buckley is secure in his reputation but can sometimes seem ossified. A prime example of this is the speech entitled "Without Marx or Jesus," in which Buckley is called upon to respond to the arguments of French intellectual Jacques Revel. It's clear that Buckley has no idea how to deal with Revel on Revel's own terms and Buckley tends to flee into a discussion of persons and institutions that are obscure today. But when Buckley is asked to orate on a subject friendly to him, he does well, such as in various commencement addresses which are, as David Brooks notes in his introduction, essentially theological orations. But to understand the political background of all the speeches in the last three decades of the last century, it seems that the dictum, "Well, I guess you had to be there," applies.

To all jobhunters out there- Get this book! Why should you get this book? Because it works and it helped me get a fantastic job that I am using as a stepping stone for my future career. This book applies to everyone. From the recent graduate to the stay-at-home parent that wants to re-enter the job market.

I am a recent university graduate and I got a hold of this book through a friend. It helped me in so many different ways. The book is an easy read, it is well organized and gets straight to the point on the different steps one should take in the job hunt. This book was a valuable tool for me and I think for anyone who is determined to find that dream job.

The beginning of the book describes many of the emotions one might face if just entering the job market or if one has been laid off for whatever reason. As a recent graduate, I felt that noone was going to hire me and that I would not find anything. This book helped me understand that the most difficult obstacle to overcome before being successful and finding that dream job are your emotions. I got past my self-doubt and began working harder at my job-search.

The next step is how to turn your resume and cover letter into a winner that will get the attention of anyone willing to look at it. The book helps by providing what to do and not to do. Examples are provided. I took the authors' advice and my resume looked more professional and polished.

Once I received a phone call asking for an interview, I turned to the book to find a chapter on various interview methods. I took the advice and aced the first interview. Without taking the advice provided by this book I would not have felt as confident as I did. I was fully prepared and ready for all types of questions.

What I want to say is that this book gets to the point, moves you through step-by-step and helps in preparing you for what to expect with the job-hunt. What you find won't fall into your lap, you have to work hard to get it. What this book did give me was the confidence that I needed to get through the process. Now I am working full-time and I credit the book to my success.
