Specific Strategies for Utilizing the Talents of One of Our Most Valuable Resources—Paraeducators!

Paraprofessionals--or paraeducators--have long been an invaluable resource in our schools. A well-trained paraeducator not only boosts teacher morale and school-home-community relations, but also increases the amount and quality of instructional time as well as student achievement levels. But where are paraeducators' talents best utilized? Who will train them? And how can we best serve the ever-changing needs of the student population?

This comprehensive resource provides teachers and administrators with answers to these important questions and much more, supplying practical tools and strategies for how to best recruit, manage, and use paraeducators in their schools. French gives specific guidelines for working with paraeducators in Special Education, Title 1, Bilingual (ESL), School Library/Media Center, General and Special Education Classrooms, Speech/Language Pathology, and Health Care Services, helping teachers and administrators make the right decisions for their districts and schools.

4 out of 5 stars 10 Traits all teachers should consider before teaching.......2004-04-05

When I first chose to read this book, I wasn't sure how much of it would pertain to mentoring. My concern increased when I received the book and it listed only one chapter dealing, officically, with mentoring. My concerns quickly vanished as I began to read. This book is an excellent book for new teachers to read or for mentors to share with them. It focuses on all aspects of teaching and stresses the importance of the well rounded teacher and their ability to be a real person. It states that the intellectual abilities are just one component of an effective teacher and encourages teachers to be respectful, empathetic, creative, and to have a sense of humor. There are also suggestions on how to encourage and empower experienced teachers. This book comes with graphic organizers that can be used to create presentations for in services or new teacher orientations and the author has granted permission for such usage. Ten Traits of Highly Effective Teachers makes a great addition to my professional library.

2 out of 5 stars Has anyone read this book?.......2004-01-14

The two reviews (so far) for this book were obviously written by the interns at the publishing house or publicist's office.

Tells you everything you need to know.

Keep on moving, folks. Nothing to see here.

5 out of 5 stars What makes an Effective Teacher?.......2003-04-09

10 Traits of Highly Effective Teachers by Elaine K. McEwan is well put together book, with lots of graphic organizers to clearly illustrate the ten traits. It concisely lists and explains the traits that make administrators and teachers effective. This book provides tools for teachers, administrators, and mentors to help others and themselves become more effective.

Principals and administrators will find ideas to help them improve instruction, become more able mentors, and motivate effective teachers. Teachers will find information and inspiration to define personal definitions of effective teaching. The book will give every teacher a renewed sense of mission and vision of what teaching can be.

McEwan's book divides the traits into three categories: personal traits, teaching traits, and knowledge traits. She introduces you to each trait through real-life examples, personal vignettes, and reflections of students, parents and educators. She provides many lists, questions, and exercises to empower teachers and nurture the ten traits.

5 out of 5 stars EXCITING ANSWERS TO WHAT MAKES EFFECTIVE TEACHERS.......2001-12-02

10 TRAITS OF HIGHLY EFFECTIVE TEACHERS by Elaine K. McEwan is bound to be a best seller. The American public is tired of pie-in-the-sky theory; they want no-nonsense answers about what makes administrators and teachers effective so that these traits can be emulated and transferred to the next generation of educators.

Ms. McEwan admits in the book that she likes lists; and the busy reader profits from her lists because they contain substance. Her lists are not full of superfluous rhetoric but are nuggets of digestible truth.

What traits should quality teachers seek to develop? McEwan lays them out concisely. What should principals do to encourage classroom teachers? McEwan tells the inquiring reader. What questions should a principal and/or a committee ask when hiring prospective teachers? McEwan spells them out through helpful snippets of real-world scenarios. How can a teacher develop his own teaching style? McEwan gives fascinating examples. How can a teacher manage instructional time to the maximum? McEwan illustrates actual experiences from her own life as an experienced educator.

McEwan's book is not wordy, and it can be consumed in small bites which is a must for over-committed educators. However, her content and style make the reader want to keep reading. Having been a classroom teacher for over 29 years, I found myself saying "Amen" again and again; but I also found myself learning new information to which I had never been exposed.

Elaine McEwan is indeed a teacher of teachers, a leader among administrators; and her book should serve as a quality textbook for those who want to follow one of the highest callings in life.

Ebook Special Feature: Includes an original essay, "A Novel Beginning: Insight Into James Seigel's DERAILED" an essay by James Seigel on his path to becoming a published author and an excerpt from James Siegel's debut novel, EPITAPH. When an English teacher at Attica State Prison asks his incarcerated students to write about why they're in prison, he is astounded by the story of Charles Schine. Schine is a white, upper middle-class ad exec who meets Lucinda, a married woman, on the Long Island Railroad. Sharing pictures of their kids soon leads to a rendezvous in a sordid downtown hotel. But before they actually enter the room, they are held up by a man who rapes Lucinda, assaults Charles, and steals both their wallets. He then proceeds to blackmail them. Desperate, Charles hires someone to eliminate him-but it's the hit man who ends up dead. In a world where no one is who they seem to be, Charles sinks deeper into a labyrinth of deceit, murder, and betrayal. And in a final act of stunning retribution, it's clear why Charles is in Attica-and what he's come to do there.

Wow; if you were ever thinking of having an affair, you better read this book first. It's full of suspense and kept me guessing each chapter as to what would happen next. This could be a "How To Book" titled:"How to mess up you life." I never saw the movie, but I really enjoyed this book.

    4 out of 5 stars What tension!.......2007-08-22

Charlie's nightmare begins with his affair and from there the drama escalates.
Each chapter left me dangling, a gripping thriller indeed, with a clever narrative full of unexpected twists. A must-buy if you like suspense!

4 out of 5 stars For god's sake, read this book instead of watching the movie!! .......2007-08-02

Read it and found it entertaining and somewhat plausible from start to finish. Not a fan of this genre, but had been recommended by a friend. It moves fast and gets you involved. Overall quite a good book. But WOW do not see the movie. What a major disappointment after reading the book. I am sure the author hated the movie. At least, I would have if I were him.

4 out of 5 stars book vs. movie---anyone?.......2007-07-08

i read Derailed maybe a year or so after publication..i was intrigued by the story line but the over Hype left me cold (it always does)...i loved the book. Mr. Siegal knows his pacing---his characterization----his sense of place----to the max..the book had me after 20 pages )i usually give a book 50 pages before i "kill"it)...so Fastforward to the other day when i found a used DVD of....DERAILED...oh my god and Jennifer Anniston to boot....for $10 was it worth it?????ah yes it was...Surprise! okay..my personal cast for the book would not have been so "pretty" but what the hell. the movie works, and that is a rare thing nowadays (as far as i'm concerned). that's all i have to say. if you truly love this book don't write the DVD off thanks y'all

4 out of 5 stars No good place to stop...must keep reading!.......2007-03-16

A roller coaster ride of a story...whoa! I was sucked into this story like it was quicksand! I thought the characters seemed real the dialog was believable and the story was a nightmare you keep hoping the main character will be able to wake up from. Very suspenseful and engaging. I really liked James Siegel's direct and concise writing style.

The story is about Charles Schine who is unhappy with his seemingly ho-hum little life. He feels a little 'woe is me' and starts thinking the grass is greener...big mistake! He has an affair and then BAM his world is turned completely upside down and ho-hum starts to look pretty good.

I thought that James Siegel did an excellent job of conveying the emotions between Charles and his wife and their relationship with just a few exchanges. He never belabored or overstated anything and I really enjoyed his style of writing.

The teacher interviewing process is overwhelming; a rigorous competition among professionals that often times urges a prospect to quit. Teacher for Hire was the "guide" I needed to to ease the overall pocess and to enhance my interviewing skills.

    5 out of 5 stars Insightful, Time-Saving, Economical.......2000-04-24

Teacher for Hire is an excellent resource for all teachers attempting to enter the competitive job market of teaching. An entire chapter is devoted to interview questions and actually includes the appropriate answers. There are several outstanding resumes and cover letters, in addition to an in-depth analysis of how to secure an interview in your choice district. I highly recommend this book to all prospective teachers.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for the teacher in need of a job........2000-04-21

I am a recent elementary education graduate. I have actively begun my search for a job in a safe, top paying school district. I've had several interviews, which I've bombed. I purchased Teacher for Hire and found the interview questions and job hunting techniques extremely useful. The interviewers bombard teaching candidates with questions (off the wall questions) but Teacher for Hire prepares you for all questions. It's great.

                  Book Description

This is the definitive practical guide to fault-finding, troubleshooting and servicing satellite television equipment, both indoors and outdoors. It will take you through all areas of satellite television system servicing from the simplest fixed dish to fully motorised systems. From PAL to Mac to MPEG all contemporary systems are covered.

Satellite TV systems have been installed in a wide variety of locations, using a bewildering range of equipment. That equipment is beginning to need maintenance and repair. To cope with the volume and variety of work, Nick Beer has written the first guide to satellite TV which concentrates on what to look for and what to do when it goes wrong. This book is up to date and crammed with real-life experience, not theoretical data or manufacturer's ideal specs.

Nick Beer has already written the best-selling Servicing Audio and Hi-fi Equipment and is a technical correspondent for many UK and international journals such as Television. He also works as an engineer and teaches satellite servicing to technicians.

                    Book Description

A genuinely practical hands-on guide for service engineers -- including a new section on the latest digital equipment.

Previous editions of this unique `hands-on' fault-finding book became the guide and mentor for thousands of service technicians and engineers in many countries and was widely adopted as a college text.

Based on many years of practical bench and field experience, the book wastes little space on theoretical principles and circuit description where it is well covered elsewhere: here the emphasis is on the practical business of fault diagnosis and repair.

Twenty chapters focus on specific aspects of the equipment, dwelling longest on the most troublesome: TV power supplies, line timebases and video deck machines. Other chapters examine test-gear, intermittent faults diagnosis in digital TV and video equipment, satellite-receiver repair techniques, interfacing/hookups and workshop practice.

A symptom index is included for easy reference. Written for PAL, the differences for those working with NISC and other standards are also covered.

Eugene Trundle is the UK's leading author on Servicing and Video Technology, and a full time TV and video service engineer. His articles appear regularly in Television and several other magazines. He is the author of the best-selling Newnes TV and Video Engineer's Pocket Book and Newnes Guide to TV and Video Technology.
