Regarded as a classic, exposing our relationship to language as analagous to Copernicus' discovery of planets orbiting the sun. We are as unaware of the sheer importance of communicative skills as goldfish are ignorant of the water in their bowls. Of course, I'm the author's son.

      1 out of 5 stars A Major Disappointment.......2003-03-03

This book was a disappointment. There was virtually nothing in it I could use. It is so basic that it might be appropriate for grade school level, but that is about all. When I purchased it, I was hoping for some real pointers, tips and exercises I could use to improve my listening skills. What is contained in the book is generalities such as on page 17: three keys to hearing the message: care, pay attention and select what is important. Or on page 60, the book covers stopping bad listening habits by (a) catching yourself in the act, (b) fighting the habit, (c) substituting the old habit for a new habit, (d) ackowledge your success and (e) be patient with yourself. There are too many quizes and "listening labs". I do not recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars "Most people believe they are effective listeners." Not!.......2000-07-05

The quote above is taken from the book. The author reports that most of us absorb about 50 percent of what we hear initially in a conversation, and that absorption rate quickly drops to 25 percent for the whole conversation. Yet listening is something that we spend more time doing at work than anything else. Clearly, poor listening is an important contributor the the universal organizational menace, the communications stall. On the other hand, the book also points out that effective listening is hard work, and we cannot stay at 100 percent effectiveness for long.

We basically pay attention when we believe the message is important, interesting to us, we are in the mood to listen, we have listened to something similar in the past, and we like or respect the person who is speaking.

On the other hand, most people do want to be good listeners.

The purposes of this book are to explain the how and why of active listening (conversing with someone to make a better personal connection and to have a better understanding), to show results from good listening, and to direct the reader to improve her/his listening skills.

The book has six parts. The first concerns why it is desirable to become a better listener. The second addresses how good listeners process information and achieve higher levels of listening success. The third helps you identify your listening styles that help or hurt your listening effectiveness. The fourth is full of personal exercises to further define your strengths and weaknesses as a listener. (I was pleased to learn that I am a good listener, but I certainly have some terrible weaknesses to overcome in order to become a better one). The fifth involves ten tips that will help most people improve. The sixth is a summary of the book. The final section is helpful for creating your personal action plan.

You can also call a toll-free number and get a test to see how you are doing with your listening.

Every section is full of examples, exercises, quizzes, and self-help directions.

The book ends with Kathy's story about how better listening helped her reestablish a good relationship with her Mother.

Most of the material is business and work oriented, but it will certainly help your relationships outside of work.

Although no one can cover everything in one book, a lot of useful material is packed into one short book. You can use this book to both improve your own listening, and to encourage and show those you care about how to do the same. I have had a lot of training in listening and read quite a few books, and I found this material to be sound, thorough, and well presented in a simple, effective way.

Have many great chats and a better life!

            Book Description

This reader-friendly sixth edition of Composing with Confidence focuses on the writing of paragraphs and essays within the composing process. Readers are guided step by step through the process, but are provided with options in prewriting, discovery, outlining, and predicting. Each chapter in the unit on the rhetorical modes offers academic and professional model paragraphs and essays, along with a well-wrought paragraph assignment, an optional essay writing assignment, and at least five alternative assignments. A new chapter, Writing on the Job, offers instruction in and models of a job application letter, a risumi, and two memos. A repeated feature offers practice in summarizing, paraphrasing, quoting, and arranging material from outside sources. And two new features, Blueprints for Writing and Unit Summaries, offer quick visual summaries of the most important points of the chapter or unit. A full unit on sentence-level issues of grammar and mechanics offers instruction in only those skills that are needed to make writing clear and grammatically correct. Each chapter in the unit ends with two "Editing for Mastery" exercises. "Tips" boxes and "If Your First Language Is Not English" boxes also provide short, specific, and practical advice. The book retains its most popular feature: fast-paced, high-interest, continuous discourse materials that makes it fun to read and work with. For those interested in developing their writing skills at the paragraph to essay level.

                Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars For so much more than business!.......2004-03-19

Long ago I began to notice that people seemed to have programmed answers.
For example, when you cross paths with someone, and your eyes meet, one of
you says, "Hello, how are you today?" And as you continue passing each other
by as your schedule presses upon you, a quick, "I'm fine, thanks" is given.
But are you fine? Does the person asking how you are, truly care? Or do they
feel that an obligatory courtesy must be given because your eyes met? Don't
mistake what I'm saying. I am aware that in depth and meaningful
conversations don't happen every time our mouths open. Do we, however, take
the time to notice the people we are having a moment with? Do we care about
them beyond the pressing demands of our day?

This book asks important questions that find their prompting from a
foundation based on Scripture. This is a tremendously important book for
anyone who wishes to minister effectively. What about eye contact during a
conversation? Do you set boundaries as a listener AND as a communicator? Do
you realize that body language speaks louder than words? What are some of
the subconscious roadblocks to listening and communicating? Are you aware of
bullies in a conversation and/or people that set traps during communication?
These are a few of the topics discussed cogently in the pages of this book.

After reading this book I spoke with the author. He is a brilliant man who desires to glorify the Lord with his life and his writings. As I read this book, I was convicted about placing myself before others as I speak and/or listen. I asked him if this was an "in between the line" theme of his. Yes, it was. You see, one of the biggest stumbling blocks in any conversation is caring more about yourself than the other person you are speaking with. Do we glorify God in our speech and attentive listening? Do we convey grace and mercy as we converse? Are we a reflection of our God who cares so deeply about His children? These are absolutely crucial precepts in entering into any dialogue. This is a very rewarding book that can further us as business people, friends, and most importantly, witnesses of the Saviour.

5 out of 5 stars Who says conversation is dead?.......2003-07-07

Hey, listen up! The art of being a good listener isn't determined by DNA. Dr. John Lovitt believes anybody can master the skill if they're willing to work at it.

In this first of a series of books aimed at teaching people to communicate well, Dr. Lovitt defines what makes a truly good listener: "Listening," he writes in chapter three, "is when listeners provide verbal and non-verbal responses to understand or match the intended message of the messengers."

True listening, he goes on to explain, requires several processes: listening for content, context and key feelings and listening and observing for non-verbal cues and behavior.

Most of us manage to muddle along reasonably well with our standard listening skills. However, says Dr. Lovitt, those who listen for a living need to do better, particularly if their goal is to validate and/or help the messenger.

Wittily illustrated by San Antonio, Texas, artist Bill Bristow, WHO'S LISTENING ANYWAY is written in clear, concise language and with an enthusiastic style that makes the lessons it contains relatively painless. Using an eight-element scale he developed himself, Dr. Lovitt guides the reader into the first steps toward a better understanding of our fellow humans.

"The more people are listened to," he writes, "the less baggage they have to store. The more they are listened to, the cleaner their attics become. The more they are listened to, the less wounded they are. Being thoroughly understood and loved for who they are allows people to take a huge step forward toward wholeness, and, therefore, wellness of mind, body and spirit."

                Shall we talk?

4 out of 5 stars Simply Hearing is Not Enough.......2002-02-10

Today I see more energy wasted, personally and professionally, that could avoided if clear listening occurred. This book sets forth simple, yet profound concepts that had better be followed if you don't want misunderstanding to get in the way. I highlight my favorite insights and this book got pretty colored up.

Favoite tip was in non-defensive listening, learning how to diffuse, even turn, a verbal attack through listening.

                Book Description

This classic study of how 282 men in the United States found their jobs not only proves "it's not what you know but who you know," but also demonstrates how social activity influences labor markets. Examining the link between job contacts and social structure, Granovetter recognizes networking as the crucial link between economists studies of labor mobility and more focused studies of an individual's motivation to find work.

This second edition is updated with a new Afterword and includes Granovetter's influential article "Economic Action and Social Structure: The Problems of Embeddedness."

"Who would imagine that a book with such a prosaic title as 'getting a job' could pose such provocative questions about social structure and even social policy? In a remarkably ingenious and deceptively simple analysis of data gathered from a carefully designed sample of professional, technical, and managerial employees . . . Granovetter manages to raise a number of critical issues for the economic theory of labor markets as well as for theories of social structure by exploiting the emerging 'social network' perspective."—Edward O. Laumann, American Journal of Sociology

"This short volume has much to offer readers of many disciplines. . . . Granovetter demonstrates ingenuity in his design and collection of data."—Jacob Siegel, Monthly Labor Review

"A fascinating exploration, for Granovetter's principal interest lies in utilizing sociological theory and method to ascertain the nature of the linkages through which labor market information is transmitted by 'friends and relatives.'"—Herbert Parnes, Industrial and Labor Relations Review

5 out of 5 stars The science of labor markets.......2003-03-05

This book is an interesting introduction to the workings of the labor market. The main theory revolves around the fact that contacts within our social circle usually do not have access to information we do not already have; in order to get new information, we need to extend social circles and reach for those with whom we do not have constant contact.

Through a very academic approach to the problem, the scientific approach is best to help us understand how people get jobs. I originally read this book as an undergraduate in a labor economics course, and I have recently consulted it again (10yrs later) and found many insights I had not caught the first time around.

5 out of 5 stars how labor markets really work!.......2002-11-14

Mark Granovetter reveals how people make economic decisions and take economic actions based on the social structure they are embedded in. We are not totally rational beings as the old economists would have us believe -- we are social beings -- influenced by, and influencing those around us. It is how we vote, how we dress, how we think, what careers we pursue and what products we buy.

Yet, those immediately around us may not be very useful in helping us find a job! Our close associates know what we know at the same time we know it! Therefore, they are not very useful for telling us something new -- like where a job opening is. To find out about jobs, we don't already know about, we need to go outside of our immediate social circle to connect to people we don't see very often any more[old friends, college chums, old army buddies, former co-workers, old sorority sisters]. They now live in different social circles than we do. These social circles have information not available in our social circle -- some of the info is about job openings.

This classic book is still highly relevant and useful after 30 years! The book is somewhat `academic' in parts, but is so full of `gems' that it is worth slogging through the research numbers. Every college graduate should read this book and keep it handy till they retire.
