Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Get It, Use It.......2007-06-27

I first read this outstanding book when it was first published in 1984. I am still recommending it to my patients and students 23 years later. Laborde takes a complex subject and breaks it down into easy to digest bits that you can begin using in your daily life almost immediately. If you want to enhance your communication skills with your companions, your family, your boss, your employees, or your customers this is the book to get.

Be aware that this is not New Age mystical book. Rather it is a down-to-earth foundation for establishing mutual benefit between you and the people you interact with daily. I have introduced this book to other therapists, university professors, policemen, housewives and personal trainers. They have all raved about their increased capacity to get their message across and to understand their communication partners better.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read! To Improve on Negotiation and Communication Skills.......2005-07-27

Having been in sales for 20+ years no book has been as influential in my development of Negotiation,Conflict Resolution and Communication Skills as "Influencing with Integrity".
Establishing "Rapport" is the first step in any relationship and Genie Z. Laborde shows you the way!
It takes you into a whole new world of "awareness" by developing both verbal and nonverbal commication skills that you can utilize "in and out" of the office.

5 out of 5 stars Clear, Concise, Cogent presentation of NLP!!!.......2003-07-10

Having been a psychotherapist for over fifteen years and having struggled understanding sooooo many books on Neuro-Linguistic Programing, Dr. Laborde's book is a breath of fresh air. The topics are clear, powerful and practical in understanding and applying elements of NLP in improving communication. I can't believe the book has apparently been in and out of print as I consider it a "Classic".

4 out of 5 stars A very practical overview of how to communicate for win/win.......1999-09-07

Although this book is 10 years old, it remains very "current" and powerful. Communicating is the essence of what people do, and so often failure of good communications inhibits and injures. The book offers a great insight and practical approaches to improving communications and negotiating for positive outcomes. A "must" for anyone, but especially for people whose work involves communicating with others (most of us).

5 out of 5 stars The classic work on using NLP in sales and negotiation.......1999-07-30

One of the best things about this book is that, as the title suggests, it effectively answers that old chestnut about NLP being manipulative. Genie has simplified the Meta Model down to five types of "Pointers" which you can anchor to your fingers so you can remember them easily! She also has useful exercises for developing sensory acuity.

As a UK NLP trainer I can wholeheartedly recommend this very clear, readable and useful book which anyone in business, or in fact anyone, will benefit from. Of course, being an NLP book, it's "enlivened" by a lot of crap illustrations, but don't let that put you off.

Book Description

Collaborating and influencing across boundaries will lead to the results your organization needs.

The business environment is more dynamic, complex, and fast-paced than ever before. The combination of technological advances, better informed and connected customers, greater geographic reach, and a changing legal environment have changed the rules of the game. This has caused a fundamental shift in the competitive landscape and challenged some long-held assumptions about how organizations deliver results.

More and more of today’s business solutions require a greater level of coordination across multiple parts of an organization or across more than one organization. Successful results depend on a manager’s ability to identify and understand the interdependencies and work effectively across all boundaries. You can’t do it alone. You need the help and expertise of a larger network.

Leading from the Center: Influencing and Collaborating for Results is a primer for 21st-century management that will help you develop your ability to influence and collaborate to achieve the results you want. You’ll learn how to: •Build a network of sustainable relationships, rather than focusing on single transactions. •Identify and consider the interests of all stakeholders connected to your initiatives. •Create and communicate a compelling message to engage others in crafting solutions. •Generate sustainable results by incorporating others’ ideas, experiences, and expertise. •Build credibility and deepen your network Complete with chapter-ending checklists, this practical guide tells you everything you need to know to engage and influence others to reach a common goal.

      Book Description

Negotiating and Influencing Skills provides the tools needed to negotiate effectively in order to obtain the best result--whether you are working on securing a contract, obtaining consensus on a goal, building commitment among your employees or classmates, coaching for employee development, or dealing with family and friends. Based on the theoretical approach to cooperative negotiating skills developed at the Harvard Project on Negotiation, the book presents a two-step process toward mastery of negotiating and influencing skills that includes the development of skills by means of interactive exercises and application of these negotiating skills in personal and professional life. Evaluation tools and many exercises are used to help the reader develop and broaden his or her negotiation style and become more flexible and fluid in approach. Difficult people and difficult situations provide us with one of the best sources of information on what we need to do differently in order to negotiate more effectively. The book examines the eight critical skills we all need to negotiate successfully with difficult people or difficult situations. Learning effective negotiating and influencing skills is a lifelong process. Reading this book is only the beginning point in that process. Suggestions are presented regarding books to read, courses to take, and the continuing use of the feedback forms provided in this book. Anyone who negotiates on a regular basis and is desirous of improving his or her negotiating and influencing skills, whether that be in the work setting or in their personal lives, will appreciate the approaches offered in this book, particularly professors and students of management, marketing, organizational communication, political science, public policy, psychology, industrial organization psychology, social work, negotiation, family studies, and law.

2 out of 5 stars Not a lot of NLP material........2002-09-17

I thought this book would have more information on how to use NLP for enhancing leadership qualities. Most of what I found was just practical tips on what makes a leader and different leadership styles.

The questions posed throughout the chapters mostly ask you to think of qualities you like in different leaders and why you consider that person a leader.

If you're looking for pure NLP tips, I would suggest the book "NLP at Work". Otherwise, I would suggest skipping this book, unless you are unsure of "what makes a good leader".

2 out of 5 stars Not really NLP.......2002-06-27

I bought the cassette version of this book and found it very light in NLP content - almost none at all. I did not get a lot out of this book.

          5 out of 5 stars Growing into a leader.......2000-11-14

The author applies his lucid thinking and writing, evident in his popular Introducing NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming), to leadership in this book. He considers leadership as a journey and I like his analogy of a flock of birds. There is no one leader issuing orders all the time. Yet there is a larger intelligence that keeps the group together in very fluid formation. "The more the individuals use their own intelligence to the full for themselves, the smarter the group becomes." p.xi. O'Connor uses not only NLP, but also systems and complexity thinking in a very integrated way without technical jargons. You are invited to join this journey of growth as a leader. Start with reflections on your own goals and vision. The questions and exercises, "thought experiments"... throughout the book are excellent maps for readers to explore their own mind and values. Basic distinctions between leadership and authority, managing and leading, Roman law and common law, leaders or winners and losers' mentality, the use of values in contrast to extrinsic rewards in motivation... are illuminating. We are also helped to have a good understanding of trust and values, beliefs and assumptions. The extention of NLP's perceptual positions of self, other and objective view into a fourth perspective of context of a wider system and a fifth perspective of change through time shows the richness of systems thinking. Overall, this is an execllent guide for those willing to embark on this transforming journey and work through the exercises in acquiring both understanding and skills as a leader.

4 out of 5 stars A wonderful way to have success.......2000-04-06

A book that reached a great goal: to give operating strategies about how to behave in the way leaders behave in the most natural way. The matter is that the strategies presented here work! I remained literally "glued" to this book from its start to his end; informations are not given in a scholastic way so that the reader must take it "as is"; personally i used some strategy presented here, in my everyday work and life, and, well, i must admit that it worked, at every level; at the very least, now i have a good way to communicate with other people.I believe that this is the best gift you may give to a good friend you really care of: why not starting with your best friend: yourself...?

          1. If you already know a little about presentation skills:

This is the only book I've ever seen where the author claims that people pay maximum attention in the **middle** of a presentation, and least attention at the beginning and the end.

The rest of the content is of a similar quality.

          2. If you are a newcomer to presentation skills:

Based on numerous studies of such things as "primacy and recency" (what was said first, and what was said most recently), it is generally acknowledged that people tend to pay most attention at the beginning of a standard presentation, nearly as much at the end, and least in the middle.

According to this book, however, and with no hint of an explanation or supporting evidence, the exact opposite is true.

The rest of the content is of a similar quality.

It is possible, of course, that I have misunderstood the author's intended message - in which case I guess that simply demonstrates that the explanations in the book are even worse than I thought they are.

4 out of 5 stars Tremendously interesting and pretty instructive book!.......2004-12-27

This is a practical, readable and most of all tremendously interesting book from the field of communication skills and inter-personal relationships. Though it is written for general public and intended to facilitate our professional and personal face-to-face relationships, it can be extremely helpful for `business people' and all those dealing with other individuals or groups, such as tourist guides and interpreters. In the latter case, they will find the book instructive on how to carry out presentations and manage their groups more effectively.

The book describes various skills of controlling the audience's attention, among other topics. You can learn how to recognize (in)visible signs of a breakdown of attention of your audience, to `read' the body language of people in your tour groups, and to generally win more attention while guiding. You'll find here how to pick up signals as to how you are coming across, retrieve the situation if somebody is resistant, choose the right words to get results in any situation, and more.

The text of this book is written in a charming way with a lot of examples from everyday life, given in special 'boxes'. Each chapter is followed by a small test, so the reader can check out his understanding of the subject. Even though you might think of yourself as a persuasive professional, there is always enough space for further improvements. James Borg's book is here to help you in that direction, and not only in your professional milieu.

3 out of 5 stars Excellent resume resource for those without a clue.......2007-08-25

This book will undoubtedly save time for those who are frustrated by the process of writing their own resume. Having reviewed more resumes than I can count at this point, I can fully appreciate the value in showing people how to scrutinize their own work. The trouble that I've found is that people are too close to their own histories to do a really good job of marketing themselves. They know too much. What this book shows as much as anything is that getting a professional review on a resume is worth the price.

I found the book to be very helpful. It had some useful tips and sample resumes and cover letters. One of the best books of its type I've ever seen

I bought this book based on all of the favorable review's and was greatly disappointed. As a recent college graduate in the humanities, I found it to be a big waste of time and money! If you are not interested in finding a job, buy this book!

            Book Description

This book is for every job candidate who thinks "Do you have any questions for me?" marks the end of an interview. In the author's view, it marks the beginning of the last and perhaps most important interview phase - a phase so important that failing to prepare properly for it can undo all your hard work, including providing great answers to tough questions! It's your moment to shine - to show off the depth and breadth of your research, to remind the interviewer of how perfectly your credentials fit the job description, and to actually ask for the job! From what to ask, when to ask it, and the kind of answers to expect, this book gives every candidate, from first-timers to seasoned pros, the practical information and advice they need to ace the entire interview and get their dream job. No questions? No way!

4 out of 5 stars Valuable quick guide for job search.......2006-12-19

Quick read, easy book, good advice. The best part the the book are the list of words that can help you describe yourself. I also liked the "Get the best deal" chapter that lists all the fringe benefits one can and should ask for when relocating or making sure that proper severance package is in place...

            4 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!.......2005-03-10

This is an excellent book, and provides an easy to read format with questions listed in bold throughout the book. There is no "quick reference" sheet of questions, though there is an appendix which lists questions in the back of the book (on p. 169).

The author seems to be from a sales background, and lists many questions more suitable for sales. In particular, some of the questions seem to be quite bold and forward; you may want to skip some of these. To his credit, these questions are clearly marked.

The book breaks questions down into three general areas: questions to ask yourself (before the interview), questions to ask a prescreener (an HR person), and questions to ask the hiring manager. Most of the book is spent on the latter two.

This book also describes how to do research on a company - so you know what questions to ask. Resources are described in detail, and how to get them.

            5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!.......2004-05-20

Career development expert Ron Fry focuses on how to prepare for a job interview and how to conduct yourself during the interview. While he covers some of the same ground he's covered in some of his other books and as well as the territory in other career books, such as What Color Is Your Parachute, Fry focuses helpfully on a critical job-finding skill - asking the right questions during your job interview. He tells you how to respond when the interviewer asks you, "Do you have any questions?", because your response indicates your level of interest in the job. Besides listing questions to ask or to modify to meet your own circumstances, Fry provides helpful preparatory questions you should ask yourself to clarify what kind of job you really want. We recommend this book to job seekers at the middle or lower management level. By the time you get to the executive suite, you'll know what else to ask.

5 out of 5 stars It's not your answers, but your questions.......2004-03-27

This book does a great job of helping you ask the questions that will get you a job. As a training manager, who trains managers and executives on how to interview, I feel I am qualified to say this book works.

I know we look for people who can ask the right question. This book is a wonderful resource once you get the interview. This leaves us with the question, "How do you get an interview?" Simple, know the type of job you want and pursue it, if you do not know what type of job you want you may want to read the classic, "How to find your dream job and make it a reality." By Jason McClure.

Read this book, and learn how to ask questions for your job interview.
