Book Description
Coping with disaster is an overwhelming and often baffling task for survivors, rescue workers, and clinicians. This volume looks in depth at how people experience trauma and suggests practical strategies for treatment. The authors examine issues ranging from the biological basis of posttraumatic stress reaction to the psychosocial and fictional construction of terror, and disasters ranging from random acts of violence to war. From Chernobyl to Desert Storm, from Kentucky floods to Norwegian avalanches, the authors explore the effects of trauma on adults and children. They find certain commonalities in human response to disasters of all kinds, and hold that by understanding these partially predictable patterns of reaction, mastery of chaos, and finally recovery can occur. Based on their comprehensive analysis, they suggest disaster intervention strategies that emphasize recognition of the psychological effects of trauma, as well as preparedness and prevention.

Civil Rights 1967.......2005-06-12
Dr. King's penultimate book provides a snapshot of where we were in 1967. Two turning points had been reached.
First, his program of nonviolent direct action was clearly winning the struggle against old fashioned southern segregation, and Dr. King was looking toward the next step. He believed that the next logical step toward setting people free was a massive government program addressing the problem of poverty.
Second, within the civil rights movement, a "black power" mentality was gaining prominence. Some argued that whites should be excluded from the civil rights movement, and that nonviolence should be abandoned. Dr. King insisted that this approach would only balkanize our country, having disastrous effect, especially on blacks.
As with his other books, the author's brilliance, his scholarship, and his Christian love all come through.
It would be best to read "Stride Toward Freedom" and "Why We Can't Wait" before reading this one.
Martin's last words to America : Is anyone listening ?.......2002-10-10
Many of those who claim to admire Dr. King and quote from his I have a dream speech seem to have never read his books. This book is the best of all the books King has written and probably the least read. In it, Dr. King critiques himself for giving the then youthful leaders of the Black Power Movement too overly optimistic views of the progress of integration. He also presents the pros and cons of Black Power. He states the need for White America to do much more to improve race relations other than declaring racism to be wrong. He calls for the teaching of African-American history, and for the nation to focus more on helping the poor over military spending. This book should be mandatory reading for high school students, college students, teachers, public officials and business leaders.

Left but Right.......2007-07-25
A "progressive" view of of the overall economic system of the world. Why are the poor poor and the rich rich? What systems are in place to keep things in place? Graphic description of the dismantling of the American Dream: harder work, lower wages, greater insecurity and inequality. Good reviews from solid economists (from Wharton School, Harvard, Columbia University, and others) so this isn't baseless propaganda. Helps you understand the big picture of what's happening in our world. Published more than 10 years ago, but still very current. For example, how has NAFTA helped create the current immigration problem? Read and learn. Title of the book is stolen from Martin Luther King, Jr.
All interested in truth, read this........1999-01-25
Holly Sklar always does such a complete job with her subjects. She is incredibly clear and focused. I tend to read quite a bit of this type of literature and many times it can a bit like. . . Rant over here . . . Then Rant over there, without reaching a logical conclusion. Holly Sklar has never suffered from that. This book is very very very well researched. It should be read with the idea that the title has in mind. We really do have a choice to make in this country. Let's make the decision from a point of knowledge. Bravo Holly.
Revealing, truthful, about our society today!!.......1999-01-13
I heard the author speak on PBS radio and then read the book. Sklar explains how and why we Americans are working harder than ever today, but seem to get "nowhere." I think every business owner, politician, teacher, and parent should read this book to better understand how we can help one another in this country and the world!
Read this book, then read it again........1997-12-28
Important, a compendium of shocking statistics and stories about the sorry state of the state. Most depressing, but most enlightening. Occasionally bogs down in statistics, and perhaps too many tables, though it's always nice to have these for reference. Much to be learned here. I plan to reread this one again soon. Alan Nicoll
Book Description
Since their discovery among the Dead Sea Scrolls, the Pesharim have sparked intense debate. Are these ancient documents biblical commentary, or are they historiographies alluding to figures and events of the time? Charlesworth demonstrates that these 16 books do indeed contain historical allusions and relates these references to a synopsis of Qumran history.

A Roadmap Through the Pesharim.......2003-04-13
In years past scholars created academic chaos by arguing over the proper way to obtain historical information from the pesharim. For the first two decades of Qumran studies, scholars tended to mine the pesharim for their historical data without regard to the fact that they were biblical commentaries. This was followed by a backlash in which scholars warned against using the pesharim for historical information at all. In more recent years a middle course has been found, a roadmap through the pesharim. And this roadmap now has become the consensus of scholars.
Following are some of the conclusions of the consensus. The Righteous Teacher did not found the Qumran sect but became an influential leader. He lived during the second century BCE and died by 103 BCE. He did not write the pesharim himself, but taught "fulfillment hermenautics" to his disciples. Even so, some of his own writing may be found in the Thanksgiving Hymns. The Qumranites saw themselves as living in biblical history made sacred by earlier acts of God. They saw the Teacher as the one who would enact the final drama of salvation. However the Teacher was not known as a messiah.
Charlesworth's monograph is informative and concise but fair. For example, Robert Eisenman's proposal that the Righteous Teacher is James the Just is listed along with over a dozen others. Each proposal is footnoted for the reader who wants to
know more.
This book is excellent reading on a controversial subject.
Book Description
As our culture shifts from modern to postmodern, pastors and church leaders are finding that old, rigid church leadership systems and structures no longer seem to work. Church leaders are searching for and discovering new, creative ways of leading—emphasizing intuition, creativity, narrative, and an embrace of the chaos and tension of our time. Tim Keel, pastor of a thriving emergent church and a rising leader in the emergent church movement, offers a thought-provoking yet practical exploration of this new style he calls Intuitive Leadership. His fresh approach will be welcomed by pastors and lay leaders interested in the emergent conversation and how Christian mission should look in our rapidly changing culture.

Intriguing reassessment of the whole idea of public schools.......1999-07-31
I am doing research on the best way to change Americaneducation, and I read this book with great interest. Arons is aninsightful legal scholar who makes a forceful case that the way public schools are presently structured is inconsistent with democratic principles, if not unconstitutional. One of his central themes is that there is no way to make curricula value-neutral. As long as public schools are administered and regulated by the government, everyone's children, except those rich enough to escape, must submit to the Education Empire's agenda, no matter how much they are philosophically opposed. He asks, "By what right do secularists impose their world views on the religious' children, or vice versa?" He says there will continue to be heated conflicts and weakened communities as long as people are not free to choose their children's education. He says personal conscience, an essential for civilization, is only formed in community. Public schooling undermines conscience, as it cannot promote a universal value system without infringing on First Amendment Rights. Civil liberties lawyers have relied on the value-neutral fallacy in order to protect secularist hegemony, and Supreme Court justices have been erratically inconsistent on First Amendment rulings regarding the public schools. Arons also spells out how Goals 2000, passed in '96, establishes an official curriculum, enforces it with national tests, and though it is called "voluntary", it basically denies funding to those states and school districts who do not conform to centrally imposed mandates. He even compares Goals 2000 to a totalitarian system, and shows the similarities. It is quite disturbing to find out what is really going on in education in this country. I have come to agree with Arons that there should be a separation of school and state, and have joined this growing movement. The state should leave the formation of conscience to voluntary communities and parents in a plural society. Otherwise, we really do not have freedom of thought, or freedom of belief, because, as he points out, freedom of expression is worthless unless we are free to FORM different beliefs. But unlike Arons, I think the state should get out of BOTH administering schools and funding schools. Arons' idea of endorsing government funding of schools with the belief that it will not then control them is naive. The education liberation movement is growing, and will continue in the 21st century. This book should spark public debate on First Amendment principles, freedom of thought, formation of beliefs and conscience, and education in America. I also recommend Arons' first book, Compelling Belief: The Culture of American Schooling.
A powerful proposal for school reform........1998-07-09
I've been in education for over three decades and have always felt that our system needs to be rebuilt in major ways. Arons' book is the best combination of analysis and concrete proposals for reform I have ever read. He points out that school issues are always mired in political debate, and that whoever is ascendant at the moment holds sway in the "Education Empire." There is no room for individual students and families to take their own positions and to follow their own educational paths.
Arons recommends as a remedy an amendment to the U.S. Constitution that would provide the same educational grant for every school-age child; each family would have the right to choose any school as the recipient of this grant. This amendment would also prohibit government at any level from establishing curriculum in any school. One provision I especially like is one that gives each kid 15 or older the right to choose her or his own school.
I work with teenagers who, in my opinion, have been abused by schools that fail utterly to recognize their students as uniquely talented people and instead pay attention only to ideology and institutional habits. Arons' proposed constitutional amendment would allow kids and their families to escape this abuse by choosing schools in which they feel comfortable and can learn happily and effectively.

Book Description
With dramatic insight and down-to-earth stories, social activist Rhea Miller takes us into the mysterious world of chaos theory and the new sciences-and brings us out to the other side with renewed hope for humanity. As biologists are now discovering, life emerges out of mutual cooperation, not competition. So too can we rediscover that our very survival depends on cooperation and community. Miller's challenging and encouraging words offer us a chance to let go of clenched fists ( and minds) and open our hearts.

Good writing, great book with important insights.......1999-07-29
Rhea Miller's been on a long and winding journey to this book, and beyond. Her writing is good, and I particularly enjoyed how she has shown the important--vital--connections between chaos theory and the creation/nurturing of community. This is more than theory; she's done it, and been in the thick of it. And still is, as a county commissioner in western Washington state. Kudos to Rhea for a groundbreaking book!
