Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars You should if you care about communication.......2007-08-20

I care about the skills to communicate effectively and successfully. So do you?
I am tired of reading standard textbook or "expert advice" pages after pages. So are you?
I really enjoyed reading this small and thin book (only 120 pages) with articulating words and practical suggestions. So will you!

1 out of 5 stars Egotistical Hollywood "Bigshot" fossil selling used cars .......2007-05-14

I found the book to be ironic. The title promotes that it teaches you how to get your point across efficiently to achive a desired outcome. But it was so verbose, I found myself scanning through 80% of each chapter to get to the point. At the end of each chapter is the 30 second take away. If you skip to the end and read these sections you can save yourself 2 hours. The rest of the chapters are filled with the author recounting his experiences wheeling and dealing in Hollywood and pumping his own accomplishments. It is also dated, he celebrates his own success in TV show/movies/other entertainment endeavors that are sooooooo old a 35 year old in the know does not recognize them making it hard to understand the point. In addition the temporal context does not address common electronic communication tools we use today (email, blogging, PowerPoint)

This book may have been a good resource for the 1970's and 80's but it does not translate well to the current environment. I think you could easily find the lessons in this book and more on a typical free career coaching website.

Lastly, I do not feel that the author has the appropriate expertise and credentials. This book may be useful in the specific context of "doing deals in Hollywood" but it does not translate to my world well.

5 out of 5 stars Don't wait more than 30 seconds to buy this book!.......2006-08-14

This book should be read by everyone! Whether you are a salesperson, a public speaker, or anyone that wants to communicate more effectively, this book will help you do it. Written in a breezy, interesting style, the author gives great suggestions on how to make a presentation effectively. It is a short book, by design. My only regret about this book is that I was unaware of its existence until a month ago.

Executive summary. TV commercials are 30 seconds long for a reason. If you learn to keep your message short, to the point, and interesting, people will listen to you. Milo Frank lays out the steps in this wonderful gem of a book.

Outline:

1. Keep it to 30 seconds. People have a short attention span. It works for TV commercials. Three Basic Principles: Knowing what you want, who can give it to you and how to get it.
2. The Objective. Your objective is your goal, purpose or destination. You can have only one objective. In every form of communication, your thoughts and words should introduce, reinforce, or help you achieve your adjective. You do not have to state your objective except to yourself.
3. The Audience. Go to the right person, the person who can give you what you want. Know as many facts about the person's) you'll be talking to. Identify with your listener. What does he want from you, and what one thing more than any other will get a favorable reaction from him?
4. The Right Approach. The single thought or sentence that will best lead to your objective. The right approach will also take into consideration the needs and interest of your listener. It will give you focus and keep you on track toward achieving your objective.
5. The Hook. A statement or an object used specifically to get attention. Use your hook as the first statement in your 30 second message. It should relate to your objective, your listener, and your approach. A statement, dramatic or humorous. If it's a question, it must be answered. Anecdotes or personal experiences are excellent hooks. Your entire message can be a hook. Keep a hook book.
6. Your Subject. Catch them, Keep Them, Convince Them. What, who, where, when, why and how. Know your subject and present it as concisely and forcefully as possible.
7. Ask for the order. Action close calls for specific action within a specific time frame. The reaction, reverse-psychology close is the strategy o use when your best chance is to ask indirectly. Decide your close in advance.
8. Paint a picture. Imagery, colorful pictures. Clarity: don't use technical terms just to sound knowledgeable. Personalize it with a story. Use emotional appeal - touch the heart.
9. Spotlight on you. How you say it matters as much as what you say. First impressions: pen vs. pen in a box with a ribbon tied around it. SMILE! Inspires confidence and understanding, and makes a good first impression. Eye contact establishes sincerity. Every little movement matters. Posture reveals what you think of yourself and of your listener. Self-awareness. What you wear sends powerful signals, and shows you care. Facial expression: goal is spontaneity and sincerity. Be prepared and care about what you're saying. (Passion) Body Language: stand, don't sit. Voice: animation, enthusiasm, variety, informality, sincerity, color & variety, modulate your volume. Use pauses.
10. One or a Thousand: Great communication. Establish intimacy with your audience by making them feel that you're talking directly to them. Master, not memorize. Outline your talk: objective, approach, subject, hook, 5Ws. Start and finish without 3x5 cards. Stop talking if you look at notes. Even before you start, make eye contact with audience. Variety. Write an introduction for your introducer. Always leave them wanting more.
11. Any time, any place. The question turnabout: "you're absolutely right, and one other point is.." Know your objective, listener and approach before making any business phone call. The rules of the 30 second message also apply to memos, Thank You letters, and toasts.

4 out of 5 stars A good little book about the art of communication.......2006-05-05

What sort of person do you really hate to engage in conversation? For me, it's somebody who doesn't know when to stop speaking.
Frank declares that the basic attention span is about 30 seconds, and that if you don't make your point in that amount of time, you've lost your chance to be heard.
He then goes on to tell you how to deliver an effective message in 30 seconds.
The book is very well written, and only 120 pages long. It's well worth reading.

1 out of 5 stars Sometimes 30 Seconds Is An Eternity.......2006-02-27

The most interesting thing about this book is that the author feels no pressure to legitimize his assertion that there is something special about 30 seconds. Because his background is in the field of television entertainment, (never to be confused with communications), he finds significance in the length of television commercials, which frequently run 30 seconds. That this is done for financial reasons, not attention-span reasons, has evaded him completely. HTGYPAI3SOL is just another in the endless chain of How To books penned by individuals struggling with delusions of expertise, whose only skill is self-promotion, that package the obvious and resell it to the gullible. Readers who find anything in this slim and overpriced tome even remotely surprising or counter-intuitive are advised to probe deeper into the self-help section of the bookstore for volumes on Shoe-Tying For Beginners, The ABCs Of Writing Your Name, and Gravity - It's Not Just A Good Idea, It's The Law.

Book Description

Many speakers make presentations that are poorly designed, poorly delivered, and poorly received. There are those few, however, that are so masterful they move an audience to see the world differently and inspire them to achieve more than they ever thought possible. The Seven Strategies of Master Presenters will help anyone develop the presentation strategies and skills exemplified by the Master Presenters interviewed in this book, whether for a one-on-one presentation, a sales call, a talk to a small group, or a speech to an audience of a thousand or more. Among the Master Presenters included are Rudy Giuliani, former mayor of New York City; Terry Paulson, president of The International Federation of Professional Speakers, and Ted Corcoran, president, Toastmasters International 2003-1004.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Basic, boilerplate, a text book approach.......2006-01-04

This has some good stuff in outline format with lots of detail and obviously the authors have done their research. It is laid out in a readable and very organized fashion around the template from Toastmasters so it is a good outline for speakers from beginning to end. A little boring to read but I am sure effective stuff.

5 out of 5 stars The 7 Strategies worth 7 stars........2005-04-17

This book is in a different league than other books on presentations. It takes a quantum leap and provides insights, tools, and structure
to your presentations. I appreciated the way that the authors were
able to analyze the elements of a presentation and explain its importance.

This is the type of book you may want to read a couple of times as the
information is complex but very effective. It has helped push my presentations to the next level.

4 out of 5 stars Insightful!.......2004-12-22

If you get nervous before speaking in public, if you hear snores coming from the audience, if people keep leaving the room to "take a call" and don't come back, if your few remaining listeners are focused on their Blackberries, you definitely need this book. Authors Brad McRae and David Brooks have long, varied experience in public speaking and offer a concise, well-organized, straightforward guide for the perplexed. The book covers everything you need to know about making an excellent public presentation: how to meet deadlines, how to organize your slides, what to do when construction workers start hammering in the next room, even how to handle hecklers and pests. The authors provide a wealth of anecdotes and illustrations. As a bonus, much of their counsel about public speaking equally applies to other kinds of communication, so the principles in this book can help you improve not only your speaking but your writing, website design and more. We recommend it highly.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for all presenters.......2004-10-20

"The Seven Strategies of Master Presenters" is quite simply a great blueprint that will allow any speaker to take their expertise to the next level. Loaded with a multitude of examples that bring the suggested techniques to life, this book is an invaluable resource for anyone who seeks to give more effective presentations. I loved it and I have already put some of these practical and easy-to implement strategies to good use.

5 out of 5 stars All the World's a Stage.......2001-09-21

"It's a simple fact that all of us use the techniques of acting to achieve whatever ends we seek, whether it is a child pouting for ice cream or a bawling politician bent on stirring the hearts and pocketbooks of potential constituents." -- Marlon Brando. Applying the techniques of acting to the business world makes for better public speakers is the thesis of this book and it's a good one. I'm a coach and have done a lot of public speaking, and this book pointed out many ways I could improve my presentation. I also coach other people about public speaking, and I'll be recommending this book to them.

Rehearsing well ahead of time, they recommend, so that you aren't 'rehearsing nervousness' which is what will happen if you go on stage unrehearsed each time. Good point!

The parts I really enjoyed were their treatments of the kind of phoniness you sometimes feel. They point out that there's nothing phony about real acting -- it's not cheap theatrics. A real actor finds the truth in the situation and brings many different aspects of himself to his role and lives it as honestly as he can within the fictional parameters of the play. "A good speaker does the same within the parameters of the speech."

"Play the full range," they say. "Every human being possesses all 88 keys on the piano, but most of us restrict our melodies to the middle octave." This book will show you how to play all over the keyboard! It's great!

5 out of 5 stars Invaluable advice.......2001-08-21

I first heard of Deb Gottesman and Buzz Mauro when I picked up their first book about using acting techniques in the job interview process. As an attorney practicing in the area of employment law, I had many clients who had found themselves out of work and back in the job market after many years. I bought a copy of the book, and read it, and then went back to the store and bought 15 additional copies to give to clients. So, it was with great excitement that I saw a second book by the Gottesman/Mauro team. Taking Center Stage is brilliant. For anyone who has contemplated public speaking, but been daunted by the seemingly natural skills of others, this book is gives reassurance. I have already tried some of the exercises and am intrigued at the idea that I, too, can develop public speaking skills. I can't recommend this book too highly.

5 out of 5 stars A Good Basic Book on Public Speaking.......2000-11-04

Author drives home the need for preparation of script or outline. This book is not a pep talk nor does it have a motivational bent. It is well written. Did any of Ronald Reagan's speech writers not write a book. Different than most public speaking books, he leaves you to pick your own words and gestures for the most part. He focuses on being who you are and making the most of it. If you are a clear cut expert in the areas you intend to speak on this is the book for you because it is short and sweat and covers the critical basics without trying to make you over.

              4 out of 5 stars A good overview........2006-09-01

I bought this book, knowing very little about going about getting a career in venture capital. I would compare this book to the Dummies or Idiots series of books - a good introduction, but by no means comprehensive.

You will be more happy with this book if you are more concerned with information about venture capital firms themselves. The book devotes a large portion to an overview of a number of prominent VC firms in the US. This will help you select what VC firms you may want to try to get hired on with, if you are unaware of the specialties of each.

What the book does not devote much time to is the "day in the life" type of discussions. There are a couple entries by people employed in VC that are at different stages in their careers. But I believe that more of these types of journals would give a more comprehensive overview of a career in VC.

I think this book is a good place to start if you are interested in learning about a career in VC. After reading the book, you will be able to decide whether or not you are interested in learning more about the industry, or whether it's not for you.

5 out of 5 stars Well written guide for anyone interested in a career in VC.......2005-02-19

This is a well-researched and written guide for anyone interested in a VC career. It is primarily targeted at MBAs exploring their options after business school and puts a career in VC in context with the typical MBA alternatives - investment banking and management consulting. Even though as a mid-career executive I am not within that target group, I found this a compelling reading with helpful tips on how to get one of those elusive entry level VC positions through networking and aggressive self-marketing. I ordered this book directly from wetfeet.com and I was charged a whopping $15 for surface delivery.

              Book Description

The venture capital world is made up of only a few hundred small partnership firms, usually employing between two and 40 people. These firms include the famous players -- Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, The Mayfield Fund, Bessemer Venture Partners -- along with many others. At first glance, these firms appear to be remarkably similar. They have few employees, lots of money to invest in entrepreneurial ventures, and they want to be part of the next phenomenally successful start-up. Despite these shared characteristics, each firm has adopted its own approach to succeeding in the competitive and risky world of start-up financing. Firms differ in fund size, regional focus, industry focus, and stage of investing. So, do you really want to work at a VC firm? And if so, how can you go about finding a job? This WetFeet Insider Guide will tell you what you need to know to make your job search efficient and effective.

In Careers in Venture Capital: The WetFeet Insider Guide, you'll learn answers to all of the following questions:

5 out of 5 stars A Saving Grace in Tough Times.......2003-04-11

I knew I wanted to work in venture capital but breaking into the market in these tought times was pretty intimidating. A friend of mine suggested these guides as a good resource and I'm glad I followed his advice. I now have a much better idea of the challenges facing the industry right now, and how to leverage my background to get where I want, despite the tough market. This guide also provided insight into which firms are staying afloat and which ones are struggling. I feel like I definitely have a cutting edge now.

5 out of 5 stars Wheeling and dealing.......2003-03-07

I'm currently looking into interning at one of the VC firms in and around Silicon Valley and was happy to find a guide that could give me the skinny on what's going on with the industry in general (ok, it's tougher than ever!) and which firms really appear to be viable options for my personal and professional goals. The glossary of VC lingo was an amusing and informative read as were the Likes and Dislikes of various insiders. I was thinking this could be the industry for me, but now I really feel enthusiastic about trying it out. Thanks, WetFeet, for confirming my hunches and helping me figure out my immediate career path.
