Upon futher review..........2007-07-20
When I first read this book, I was deeply moved. As a church planter I tend to pick up people that have become disillusioned with church but still believe in God. I took the words in this book to heart and carefully followed up on absentees. Some returned, most did not.
Applying my own experiences to this book I now realize that there are two parts to every story. There are people who leave the church and are not followed up on because the pastor has breathed a sigh of relief. I have never had anyone come to my church after leaving theirs tell me that they had been a burden on their former church. When I contact their former pastor I hear the other side.
Clearly the church needs to be compassionate and loving but people who leave a particular church may not be the most objective source of information. Upon further review I would prefer a book that follows up on the sad stories allows the accused churches to tell their side.
One Side of a Story.......2006-12-27
The author takes us through a series of interviews with people who have left the local church. Their reasons for leaving are diverse, but usually stem from a series of perceived hurts or rejections. Most dropouts occur as a result of:
(1) A Relationship that suddenly ends
(2) A conflict goes unresolved
(3) A conflict is perceived to have been resolved unfairly
The larger bulk of the book is made up of the various interviews. In each case we are taken on a step by step tour of the experiences and feelings of those who are interviewed. The author himself has only limited theological training and so gives little attention to the theological contexts of these various interviews beyond a very basic impressionistic picture. His message is that people are leaving the church and that the church needs to know why so that it can better consider how it might meet the needs of its "customer."
The strengths of this book are seen in its lay approach to people. It speaks with an easygoing openness to problems without any attempt to whitewash them. Its primary weakness is in the fact that only one side of each case history is given and there has been little or no effort to determine the veracity of the various accounts.
"First Christ saves us out of the world. But eventually He saves us back into it" (Page 33). This means that the church must be ready to rub elbows with sinners, not lowering its standard of holiness, but making certain that such standards are biblical rather than the cultural icons of a previous century.
Recommended by a Wounded Healer.......2006-06-10
As one wounded by the Church, I highly recommend this book.
Hendricks has honestly told the brutal truth by those wounded by the Church. Fellowship in the Church should be all about grace. It is not. It is based on tithing, conformity, and keeping your mouth shut. Only those with some kind of power- financial, political, and community -lead the church, not those with a deep commitment to Jesus Christ. The leaders should be visionaries to adventure out in the freedom of the Gospel. They are not. Hendricks clearly shows that many people leaving the church are genuine believers who want to let God do great things in their life. The Church is the great Preventer of this happening.
Grace happens, and the Church shuold get out of the way and let it happen.
Deeply Insightful, Deeply Moving.......2005-03-01
This is the second time I am reading this book. It should be read by every pastor and every parish council member or every outreach ministry.
We are so eager to get people in the door of the church - but we need to listen to those who slip out the back. They ussally leave, without saying a word, with so much to teach us. They may be perceived as malcontents, or "uncommitted," but this book reminds us that they are almost always in search of truth and reality, and somehow, the rest of us have failed them. We need to listen - and take heed. It also gives profound understanding to those who are thinking about heading out the back door themselves. Perhaps all of us are one of "them" at times too.
All church leaders should read this book.......2004-10-18
This book should be on the bookshelf of every minister and church leader. One word of warning, the stories within will break your heart. Most books on church growth have people standing at the front door, asking why they joined. In this book, Hendricks stands at the back door, asking "Why are you leaving?"
The answers will surprise you. These are not malcontents, disgruntled people who didn't get there way and so migrate from church to church. These are all people who sincerely want to serve Christ, and find that the Church is unresponsive.
It really moves one to start listening to what people are saying within the church.
One major factor, is that many churches have left grace behind. As Hendricks points out:
"the greatest tragedy was that a system promising forgiveness to people and freedom from guilt ended up making so many of them feel guilty. That, in turn led to chronic legalism. At every turn, they staggered under massive expectations that they could never quite fulfill....
Thus grace became a theological fiction. Yet rumors of a gracious God persisted. And once people discovered what for so long they had been denied, they felt cheated and outraged and made a beeline for the exit."
Hendricks ends that section by saying "As I say, it appears the church has a lot of theological ground to reclaim."
No book other than the Bible itself has served to upend my own theology and open my eyes to something that all Christians need to remember, myself included. It is that five letter word, which many are so afraid of...GRACE.
Book Description
If you’ve ever wanted to tap a ready-to-use questionnaire the same day you recognize your organization needs a survey, then help is finally at hand. Authors Paul and Kathy Connolly have designed a must-have collection of proven, reliable organizational surveys that anyone--from specialist human resources professionals to line managers and team leaders--can put to use immediately. Employee Opinion Questionnaires includes short, ready-to-use surveys organized into three groups: Use
Issue-Focused Surveys to determine employee opinion on topics such as diversity, communications, and adaptability to change. Use
Mission-Focused Surveys to gauge opinion on critical organizational issues, including employee alignment with mission, quality, ethics, and customer care. And use
Event-Related Surveys for new hires, exit interviews, and assessing peoples’ attitudes following training.
Customer Reviews:
Like A Life's Work on Employee Surveys.......2006-04-08
The Connolly's latest book on employee surveys is an outstanding reference for survey practitioners (like me) as well as for those who may be doing their first survey. The book is packed with practical ideas on the entire survey process.
The 20 ready-to-use surveys included are excellent and support the trend towards quick, issue-focused surveys vs. comprehensive employee surveys. The authors have freely shared their extensive knowledge and experience about employee surveys and quick surveys. It's almost like they poured their life's work into the book. I'm really impressed with this book and pleased to add to my reference library on surveys.

From the supplier: The exit interview is an effective means of getting information from employees who are slated for termination. Whether an employee is voluntarily or involuntarily terminated, a manager can use the exit interview as a means of gauging perceived worker-management relations. There are proper techniques which a manager can use to make an exit interview as effective as possible. Information from these interviews can be used in improving worker-management relations.

Customer Reviews:
It teaches principles and illustrates them in examples. .......2005-12-21
I wish I had read this book earlier. What distinguishs this book from hundreds of other interview books is: it teaches principles and illustrates them in examples. My local library (I am in Toronto! The public library rocks!) has an excellent career book collection. I have skimed through almost a hundred and read thoroughly around ten books. I found no book better than this one on teaching principles.
The author has rich experience in interviewing and negotiating. (a cousin of interviewing) He has done an excellent job in boiling down the whole interview process into common sense and actionable steps--"key points" at the end of each chapter. His lawyer profession also gives this book an edge--managing an interviewer's feeling just like managing a jury's.
I suggest you buy this book. Because it worthes you time to read letter by letter, again and again. You can then skim through other books, picking good points and overlooking nonsense. (I remember a book teaches me to mention "My only weakness is I am working too hard." What a nonsense and phony answer. I don't think people saying that can ever get a decent job)
I disagree with the author on two points. The first one is about sending thank-you notes after interview. I don't understand why the author wastes so many pages to support his not sending thank-you notes argument. As another reader in this website points out, many recruiters actually appreciate the thank-you notes. I saw once in a HR manager's office that she displayed one thank-you note in her desk!
And I don't believe a thank-you note will reduce your chances, since normal persons will feel positive when receiving others' appreciation. But the author is right--the ultimate factor is the combination of your qualification, performance, and etc; a thank-you note will make a little difference. (My rule is: if a well-polished woman interviews me, I will send one. Otherwise, no.) It seems to me that the author is too busy showing off how he defies the conventional wisdom and forgets to use common sense, which I believe he has a sharp one, to examine this minor issue.
The second point I disagree is that the author thinks all interview Q&A books a waste. Although he is right that you need to use your own language to prepare all FAQs, I found I learn a lot on how to prepare answers from reading current Q&A books. And several interview Q&A books actually do a better job in provide a comprehensive FAQ list than this book.
Nevertheless, this book is excellent and will definitely make difference for your interview!
Good Resource.......2005-06-10
Instead of being a "snappy answers for stupid questions" book, this one basically says you should look into yourself to figure out what you want in life/a job/this interview and go from there. Very commonsensical and applicable.
I doubled my salary with this book.......2004-01-05
Sure, this is written for the corporate crowd (more specifically, from a lawyer's perspective), but it is full of useful information.
Using the guidance in this book, I navigated my way through a two-part, three-person interview that got me the job I needed to get my feet on the ground and start running!
I refer to this book any time I have an interview. It covers face-to-face interviews, phone interviews, and eating-lunch interviews. It covers negotiations, how and when to bring up salary, when and why to send Thank You notes, etc.
How much do I love this book? Well, I love my job, and I love to sell used books through amazon.com, but I will NEVER get rid of this book.
I don't care if you're interviewing for a job assembling door handles for Toyota at $7/hour ... if you want the upper hand, read this book.
The list of questions to expect from your interviewers ... and, more importantly, the list of questions to ask your interviewers is invaluable. (One question in particular has always been met with: "Wow. That's a good question. Let me think about that." Hey, anytime your interviewer says that, you have the upper hand. (If you want to know which question I'm talking about ... feel free to email me.
Pretty Good But . . ........2003-05-22
Generally good advice but some odd strays from mainstream advice that I don't agree with. For example, it argues against thank you letters after an interview - says that they are an irritant to interviewer. Personally, I have been involved with hiring plenty of people and a well written thank you never hurts and can make a difference in a close call.
This Book Will Help You Win in Competitive Interview.......2003-03-25
"Sweaty Palms: The Neglected Art of Being Interviewed" covers numerous aspects of competitive interviews where there is a known vacancy. An excellent discussion on discrimination. Includes sections on preparation, types of interviews, typical questions and helpful answers, relaxing yourself, dress, use of silence, negotiating salary, and making the final decision.
