Power Up!.......2006-05-16
My job recently started to include quite a bit of Electrical Engineering such as generator sizing. I also needed to specify motor controls and electrical filters to avoid interference, and other electrical issues which I had a poor understanding of. I had suppliers and contractors asking me questions like I was some kind of electrical guru.
This book greatly assisted my understanding, and one of my latest projects involving a 125 HP submersible vertical turbine driven by a VFD was successful as a result.

NOTE: I'd update this review to 4 stars but it won't let me. The errors in the solutions to the problems have been reviewed by Dr. Wildi as a result of this review and a new solutions manual has been compiled. Dr. Wildi is a rare author indeed! Original review follows.

You'd think that by the 6th edition, most of the errors would be fixed. This is not the case. The answers to some of the problems have errors and I was unable to find an errata.
The coverage is broad, as would be expected from a single book trying to cover most of power systems. As a result, needed detail is lacking. For instance, a good portion of the time the book only covers magnitude calculations and phase coverage suffers because of it. However, for undergraduates who will have only one power course, it is comprehensive and covers the most important material well.
One thing I'd like to see in future editions is a treatment of power flow analysis. Although it has a lot of pictures of real equipment, much of it is very hard to make out. Clearer pictures in a future edition would be a nice upgrade as well.
For people who complain that this isn't for first year students or self-study, I have one thing to say: duh. It is very difficult, though not impossible, to learn engineering on your own. The biggest mistake self-study people make is not being strong in math and physics. You must learn calculus and electromagnetics before you get into anything beyond basic logic, or you will be lost.

I had engineering science program years ago , but not much electrial circuits- just the basics. I bought this book for self-study. I read through the first eight chapters and worked a lot of the problems without much problem. I then read the chapters on the smaller electric motors and some about controls. Its not a begineers self-study book. If you have the background you can learn from this book;however, I had to read some of the material over several times to understand it. I still didn't feel like I had a good understanding about the basics of electric motors. Like how to wire them up, how to read the nameplate and so forth. This book is for the classroom and lab. It has a lot of information. My local university uses it in their technology program for three different courses I think.
Comprehensive and Complete.......2001-04-18
I am delighted to have found this text. I find it the most comprehensive, complete and up-to-date text on electrical machinery, power distribution and transmission, etc., that I've seen. It does an esppecially outstanding job of presenting harmonics and harmonic effects on modern power systems. Kudos to the author!
NO INDEPENDANT STUDY'S HERE.......2000-11-23
This book has considerable information for advanced studies, but is lacking more down to earth presentation. It needs more simplified terminology.This is not a book for a first year colledge student.

Book Description
Electrical drives in general play a key role in power generation, household appliances, automotive and industrial applications. The rapidly expanding area of adjustable speed drives as used in robotics, wind turbines and hybrid vehicles is driven by innovations in machine design, power semi-conductors, digital signal processors and simulation software.
This brings us to the purpose of this book namely to help students and engineers appreciate and understand the fundamental concepts of modern electrical drives. An interactive learning approach is taken in this text: theory and calculations are augmented by generic models which are transposed to a simulation platform. The 'build and play' method used in this text visualizes the dynamic operation of a comprehensive set of modules ranging from an inductance to a novel 'ideal rotating transformer' (IRTF). This module is at the center of the generic models used in this text to explore the dynamic and steady state operation of grid and converter fed induction, synchronous and DC machines. The section on modulation and control emphasizes the role of power electronics and digital signal processors in drives. The CD which accompanies this text has an extensive set of 'build and play' tutorials, in Simulink R° and Caspoc. The latter is a simulation platform which allows direct access to the 'build and play' modules, without further licensing needs. All figures in this text are included on the CD in order to help with the preparation of customized Power Point type lecture material.
Fundamentals of Electrical Drives is for readers with a basic engineering knowledge who have a need or desire to comprehend and apply the theory and simulation methods which are applied by drive specialist throughout the world.

Conflict and Cooperation provides a theory for examining the substantive effects of institutions and institutional change. The book significantly advances the efforts of economists to evaluate the distributive implications of institutions
and to understand the sources of institutional change. The situation, structure, and performance (SSP) framework, developed throughout the book, provides a method for enhancing academic and public discourse concerning policy choices and their effect on economic performance.
The book provides many applications of the SSP approach. In addition, many SSP treatments are placed in an empirical/historical content. These examples enable readers to practice applying the framework and better understand the
relationship between institutions and economic performance (both in theory and in practice). For the above reasons the book will be very useful to researchers seeking to conduct institutional analysis and students seeking to understand institutional economics.
A major plus of the book is that it incorporates a number of advances in behavioral economics -e.g., bounded rationality, emotions, cues and fits, etc. - into a theory of institutions and institutional change. This is important because the evolution of institutions and human interdependency is, in part, a function of the human brain. Conflict and Cooperation begins to open this area of inquiry. The SSP approach avoids the Pandora's box that might otherwise accompany a review of the behavioral economics literature in an institutional context.
Both conventional and institutional economists will benefit from reading this book. The conventional economist will be attracted to the abstract SSP framework and he/she will be better able to evaluate institutions and their distributive implications. The institutional economist is challenged to
