Overall this book was OK. It presented the key information in money and banking and the authors often made it entertaining to read. However the one major flaw with the book is the lack of ANY math. I know that some books are marketed for a more mathematical approach and thus contain more advanced mathematics accordingly. However this book had so little math it was laughable. I recall one section where the authors said "this can be proven mathematically, but for now just take our word for it..."
NO, I won't take your word for it, because knowing the underlying principals is to truly understanding anything.
Poorly written.......2006-03-22
Principles of Money, Banking, and Financial Markets contains a great deal of information regarding economics in the United States. As a student, I find it to be poorly written. The authors/editors make constant reference throughout the text to other sections of the text. For example, we will discuss this in depth in chapter seven, but for now, lets reflect our continued study from chapter two and three. By doing so, we will be better prepared to read chapter eleven when we get to it. If the authors / editors left out the references and just left the actual information needed to learn the material, the student would be able to follow the material and perhaps understand the topic better. I am strongly encouraging our economics department to seek another text for future semesters.

I recommend this book to all those who want to get familiar with the U.S. Mortgage/Residential Lending industry. This book provides a good historical perspective of the industry and its development in the U.S., and explains the mortgage process from soup-to-nuts - right from the application stage to the servicing and default management stage. As an industry professional, I have benefited a lot from reading this book. I have also recommended it to many friends and associates who have benefited a lot as well. The most appealing aspects of this book are that it is comprehensive, simple-to-read, and interesting.
Thorough review of mortgage lending development and practice.......2001-09-01
This is a must read and good reference book for mortgage professionals, including lenders and practitioners in secondary mortgage business. The book gives excellent review of the development of residential lending in US, of government regulations, major market players, and important product types. Then the book gets to the details of mortgage lending processes and also touches the secondary markets. Readers can definitely gain valuable and practical knowledge on residential lending business after walk through the book.

This text is well worth the money. I have used it repeatedly for general transfusion med questions in the hospital and in dealings with the transfusion med committee. Although I have both, this book gets used much more than Mollison's text....the writing is clearer, and answers are simply easier to find.

Excellent for those entering the banking industry (e.g., I used this for when I entered IndyMac Bank). When I joined retail banking (previously only having worked in Investment Banking at Morgan Stanley) I was able to expand my knowledge on various areas of the retail banking beyond just what I-Banking had taught (e.g.,, valuation, SEC II & SEC III stat techniques, tax implications and flippying and insider trading tips of how to find/negotiate the best properties).
I think this book is an excellent read and suggest it for all looking at this field.

This is the text used by the American Bankers Assn. (ABA) to teach beginning bank personnel how banking works. My company, a large banking software company, also uses it to train new employees.
Only the 1st chapter is a sales pitch. The rest is easy to read, comprehensive presentations of teller functions, payments, credit, reporting, business banking, marketing, history and current trends.

In today's competitive banking industry, institutional banking is attracting greater interest. Under the globalization umbrella, inter-bank business is undergoing dynamic change and is transcending the boundaries of traditional correspondent banking. In today's climate, no bank, regardless of size, can grow without the cooperation of other banks and no bank can hope to survive and prosper without utilizing emerging markets. Institutional banking in emerging countries has some unique functions: for example, problem solving is heavier and more crucial in emerging markets than in developed countries, given the irregularity of the market and non-transparency of the financial/legal systems. Moreover, it is particularly necessary to forge good relationships, day-to-day contact and personal communication, to provide better chances for product marketing and risk management. The study guide itself is a pretty good concept, but there are so many errors (too many to even think about listing), that it is difficult to even follow, or to even be sure you are reading about the correct concept. If you absolutely NEED a study guide for the book, it's the only thing available, otherwise I wouldn't bother simply because it has so many errors.

Clearest and simplest explanation of MONEY!.......2001-11-30
This is the best clearest and simplest explanation on the medium of exchange that I have ever read! This includes Jekyll Island by Griffin and Mullins on the Federal Reserve, each of which I have read twice. North provides answers and explanations the had hitherto escaped me. Some historical and biblical references are quite palitable. A paltry 160 pages that should be read by anyone and everyone using "money", what ever it might be at the time. Get and read this book!
