No useful information.......2006-11-03
I purchased this article because it's very relevant to the field that I'm in, and I thought that it might have some interesting nuggets of research that I could use when talking to prospects.
Unfortunately, this is nothing but a four page, rambling list of generalities. No citiations, no specific insights or research. Nothing, really, of any value.
Plently of observations like "Ninety percent lower telecom cost is, of course, achievable with VoIP." Without any support, references, nothing.
Completely worthless. Save your $6 - I'd like mine back.

Review of the 2nd edition.......2000-06-21
I am a reader of the 2nd edition of this book, as I have not got the 3rd edition that , sorry, just give you some comment to the 2nd edition. I believe, however, you can glean how good the 2nd edition is. Firstly, it give some hits of writing a cover, or , what essential information should be given i your cover letter. For instance, you should tell the potential employer whet you are available to attend the intervew. Secondly, What visas/permits would you be necessary to got. Thirdly, after arrival, the first stuff you have to do is how to fight with " Customs Not only those information, it also drops the hints down, say, the issue of accommodation, public transport, insure , etc.. Indeed, I highly recommend this book to whom want to work in the UK.

Customer Reviews:
Great for college students or people figuring out what they want to do.......2007-05-15
What a great book! You could literally live your life with this book going from one volunteer opportunity to another. The book is basically a list of short terms jobs ranging from camps to dude ranches to museums. It tells you if they pay you anything, if they feed you, if they board you, how long the job is for, and it gives descriptions and contact info. This is an excellent all in one resources for jobs in the US so quit the desk job and travel around volunteering for a living. This will inspire you to do it!
Just Do It!.......2007-01-16
Excellent resource for the pure pleasure of doing something different. If you have the time, resources and an adventurous spirit, just go out and buy this book and then just do it!
ditto.......2006-07-10
"pretty good book. Wish there were more photos and that the photos were in color. Also I would have liked a few more animal short term job adventures. I noticed the book focused a lot on students and US locations but did include a section on global jobs and adventures abroad. loved how the book offered a good variety of jobs for all types of people with website and other critical info on each job!"
Definitely not what I expected.......2006-05-27
I guess the title is phrased badly; I assumed that this book was about internships abroad, summer jobs abroad, etc, but it is about internships, summer jobs, seasonal work, and volunteer vacations in the United States, as well as "transitions" (whatever that means) abroad. And this book is not really a guide, in that it doesn't really give a lot of advice about different jobs and different fields. It is more a listing, like an address book of the most interesting companies (in the author's opinion) offering short-term work, with a very shallow description of the job and its hiring preferences. The only part that was really a guide was the bizarre information on finding yourself and journaling and exploring your passions. Apparently other people found this really great, but I got a little sick of inspirational quotes and follow-your-dreams sidebars; there are plenty of career-advice and self-help books offering this information. Luckily, I borrowed this book from the library, which is where it should stay. If you're looking for short-term opportunities in the United States, go to the library, look through this book, and take down the contact information for the companies you're interested in.
The Big Book of Fun.......2006-04-21
This book changed my life. It has led me into many adventures and helped me meet some of my closest friends. It is a book of possibilities and an opportunity to dream and create a unique life.
In addition, I love how easy it is to navigate.
A must have.

Not Recommended.......2001-08-18
I bought this book recently together with the author's other book, Living and Working in New Zealand. Plenty of pages were spent on immigration procedures which are readily available from the internet and are more up to date. The author has too much British bias and, I suspect, this book was intended only for potential immigrants from UK who also might not find anything useful. Having read a lot of books on the subject,I do not recommend this book to anyone.

Not worth the time or money........2000-03-13
This is a pretty worthless collection of common knowledge. The time spent reading this book could just as easily be spent surfing the web. The latter method would not only save you the cash, but likely yield better results.

Customer Reviews:
Wonderfully hilarious, and very usefull!.......2003-04-11
"Living and Working in Britain" gave me a feel of how it would be to live in England as a foreigner. I have British family, and Miss. Hall's description of the British was very accurate!
There is a small section describing how the British react to a bit of snow which I found absolutely hilarious as I come from the Great White North (Canada). Also, the Case Studies of other immigrants to the UK was very helpful as it gave different view points in many different situations.
Overall, I found this book very helpful and I plan to recommend it to friends or family who wish to move to the UK.
Many thanks to the author, Christine Hall; a wonderfully written book!
Courtney Kelly
Humourous and useful, but bitter.......2002-10-11
I bought this book because the title seemed perfectly suited to my needs: "How to Study, Work and Settle in the Uk". My husband and I plan to relocate to the UK and settle there. But I was disappointed by the bitter tone of this volume.
Ms. Hall is an expatriate German who has been living in England for around 15 years. Her information is useful. The "case studies" of other expatriates living in England that she presents give a full range of the different experiences of people who have moved to England. But her wit is too bitter for my liking. Although I find her jabs at the British funny, there is a point where they become tiresome and I find myself asking, "Then why do you live there?" Instead of complaining about how Englishwomen are obsessed with buying keep-fit videos which they never watch or how England shuts down at the first sign of snow, she could be telling us useful information.
Not that the book isn't full of useful stuff. Indeed, for such a small volume, it's packed with advice and warnings. But the author's anti-Anglo prejudice does get on one's nerves after a while.
I would suggest you explore other books about living in England before buying this book. I bought it as a "how-to" guide and I got someone's personal diatribe against the English instead. But all in all, it's not useless. If you've read all the others and want to make fun of the Brits, buy this one.
