Customer Reviews:
For Beginners..........2007-03-08
...and not really suitable for experienced Work-Shop leaders. I tried this book to get a sense of the quality of the books in this series. Personally I consider this book as too basic, and I must say that the quality of the provided material, such as for instance the slides, is not the standard I would expect. I would recommend this book for not so experienced trainers or people that would want to run an inhouse workshop for their own team.
easy to follow.......2005-04-26
I think the CD included with this book is a marvelous tool for the facilitator. The powerpoint and overhead slide presentations on the CD give you training programs for two days, one day, half day or one hour. The book itself walks you through step by step on how to design an effective training program. This is simple enough to follow for even the novice trainer, yet it is comprehensive enough to meet a seasoned trainers needs. I plan on incorporating many of the learning activities in our training program.

WORKS WELL FOR ME.......2001-08-19
I recently purchased this manual but did not fully appreciate its true value until it arrived in the mail. I looked at the table of contents, then quickly flipped through the pages. After studying a particular lesson, I introduced it into my class the following day. It turned into a good discussion and I walked away from the class feeling pretty good. The students liked it and the total time I invested in preparation was the 15 minutes I spent the day before. I have used the book to fill in the gaps of my communications class to make it more interesting. I plan to incorporate other lessons into my class for next term. Big thanks to the author.
Creative approach to training manual.......2001-03-12
When I bought this book, I thought that it contained the usual simple training exercises that you find in the majority of training manuals, but I was impressed by the fact that everything is written in a format that makes training easy. I am a business manager and am take training very seriously. I have been able to incorporate these exercises into my training plans. They are reproducible. My staff has given me very positive feedback about the contents. Jon from Sacramento
Good Curriculum Work.......2001-01-07
This is a useful lesson plan and outline. I have incorporated several of the lessons into my intro business course over the past six months. I teach at the CC level and student class critiques suggest that the exercises are useful in understanding communcation concepts.
Waste of Money.......2000-12-20
As a communications consultant, I read the favorable reviews for this "book" (actually, photocopied, three-hole-punched, loose-leaf pages) and thought there might be useful focused exercises I could adapt and incorporate in my workshops. How wrong I was. In my opinion, this thing is a joke. The concepts and writing are about at a 6th grade level, and I can't imagine any self-respecting intelligent employees or students sitting still for the inane, pointless exercises. In short, I feel as if I were cheated and am disappointed in Amazon for even offering a publication (this doesn't even come close to my understanding of what a book is) that presents so little substance for such a high price. Shame on the author, shame on Amazon.
WOW...what a difference in my sales staff!.......2000-01-24
I purchased this manual for my Human Resource people to have a meaningful training program. Little did I know what a tremendous impact it would have on not only the HR folks but also the sales staff who borrowed the book. I leafed through it and found that the exercises and examples were interesting and entertaining... in a word...fun.
Then the most amazing thing happened- the staff started putting these skills into practice. Immediately my salespersons were able to better communicate and understand the customers needs. Sales went up...like no $300 sales seminar they ever attended! This manual keeps paying for itself. Big Thanks to Karen Osmak, she cuts thru the BS and gets right to the heart of interpersonal skills. Using this book has revitalized my sales and HR staff and heck even I learned something!
If you are hesitating to plunk down [the] $, don't wait- you'll get it back the first time you use it. Whether a businessman, salesman, or even a doctor who has a medical practice--if you deal with people you can benefit from the information.
If you teach at a business school- you'll love it even more. The darn thing is set up to provide you with lesson plans, questionaires and handouts, all you do is turn on the charm and start teaching. It nearly teaches itself.
I'm a big believer in this manual- it helped me get promoted from HR to Director of Sales.
Book Description
How to Survive and Prosper as an Artist is the preeminent guide to taking control of your career and making a good living in the art world. Drawing on over three decades of experience, Caroll Michels walks artists through the complicated process of balancing grants, gallery representation, private dealer sales, and a personal studio to ensure a public profile and a steady income. Included is a wealth of insiders information on getting into a gallery, being your own PR agent, and negotiating prices, as well as innovative marketing, exhibition, and sales opportunities for various art disciplines.
Customer Reviews:
very useful.......2007-10-20
this is a very useful book for a visual artist. a great reference to have around.
Very helpful book.......2007-07-28
The book gave me what I needed and that was an approach to marketing to the different markets out there. This included finding galleries and licensing companies and also agents. All in all it filled me in on how to approach these segmented markets. [..]
A bound collection buisness cards.......2007-05-08
This is one of those books with exciting chapter headings like 'the mysterious world of grants' that you expect will de-mystify the process- but basically it is train station schedule telling you about different trains you can board to reach a destination (this book contains no destinations)... what I mean by that is this book is basically a reading list of a million other books. The information that is in this book is very minimal, everytime you think she is about to tell you something valuable she says "to learn more read this book or visit this website". She doesn't provide the information from those books in hers. For a 300 page book, the only meat it provided in and of itself was a soapbox for the author to dog the whole gallery system and encourage artists to sell their own work. Which is lovely but I felt like I wasted time reading her big book when I should have been reading the other books that actually have the information I am looking for in them.
If I was this author and had read all of those books myself, I think I would have written a more comprehensive one-stop guide for the artist to save them some time and energy- but maybe her book was sort of a collaborative effort where she gained something from mentioning these other books as opposed to learning from them. That is really what it felt like- a bound collection of buisness cards.
If you really want to do a lot of reading- this book is certainly a reading list, but I would bypass it and go straight to some other books.
If you DO want to bypass the gallery system and make money off your art on your own, I recommend Brian Marshall White's book 'Breaking into the Art World'. You can read it in one night and use all the info, apply it, start earning some money from your artwork. He not only provides a useful biz plan for the artist, he also includes the numbers of all his sources for printing, packaging, credit card set-up... it is the only book you would need to start making and selling prints of your work.
Cutting through the Hype and Clutter.......2007-04-12
The tone of MS. Michels book is so needed in the professional art world. I have worked in highly political corporate jobs in the past, but have not seen any profession so divide and conquer itself as I have observed in the art world. Not only does this book de-mystify the business side of the Fine Arts and Crafts professions, it is a regular reminder that we artists can be our own worst enemies when we segment ourselves into movements or confuse our desire to live from the proceeds from our work with the fear that money will corrupt our artistic intent. Also thanks for the Internet update in this edition!

Customer Reviews:
Be careful - do not touch this book if you don't like a change in your life!.......2007-08-17
In February 2006, winter and not the most pleasant time of the year to begin with, I had an all time low job and career wise. I was unhappy. I had the opportunity to attend one of Karen Salmansohn's seminars which was based on a different book of hers but I thought, in my situation, I start out with that one. I read it in 30 days because one needs 30 days to change old habits. I re-read it again after finishing it, just to make sure that all the wisdom can properly settle down.
While I am still in my old job, I've got a new outlook on things and found a way, my way, to deal with things. I still do have a different career in mind, which Karen's book made me dare to pursue. It opened my eyes for what I really, really, REALLY want and how to get it!
Karen's style is funny, direct and never boring. I recommend this book to everybody who's frustrated with their job - it definitely can be the first step to a more rewarding career - all you need to do is to give it a try. Check it out!
Boost in the Arm!.......2007-06-07
its not that the advice is earth shatteringly new...its not. But is the first book that I have read that has positively addressed the issues that women face in business. I love that it is a book of empowerment for women as opposed to a bitch session about how rough we have it. I love this book. One of my very favorite quotes is actually a recommended mantra...whenever you think you have made the most horrible business mistake in the world, repeat yourself "John Travolta is back. John Travolta is back". Clearly John Travolta has made some disasterous career decisions...but he is back. We too can make it back from any mistake.
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK and have given to several friends.
whipped my career booty!.......2004-12-17
Wow, what an inspiring book. I love how Salmansohn mixes humor with really smart business advice. I also loved her HOW TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESS WITHOUT A PENIS and HOW TO BE HAPPY, DAMMIT books. That's how I discovered this WHIP book, because I loved those other two so much...I keep buying them for friends for birthday gifts! Kudos to Karen! She rocks!
a big time career booster.......2004-06-10
I totally loved this book. It really encouraged me to do something about my job dissatisfaction...and I'm now in a better position at my company because of it. I highly recommend this book!
very insightful and fun to read.......2004-06-06
I really enjoyed this book. It was not only very insightful but entertaining. When I was finished, I found myself very motivated to put into action Karen's helpful advice...and have already witnessed the benefits at my job! I thoroughly recommend it!

101 Ways to Promote Your Web Site: Filled with Proven Internet Marketing Tips, Tools, Techniques, and Resources to Increase Your Web Site Traffic (101 Ways series)
ASIN: 1930082002 |
Amazon.com
Operators of small business have always been attracted to the Internet's seemingly bottomless supply of ready customers, but their hopes can quickly be dashed by the competitive realities of business on the Web. Poor Richard's Internet Marketing and Promotions aims to take the entrepreneur by the hand and show him or her how to draw attention to an Internet resource without spending a lot of money.
What the authors present is a sort of guerrilla model for online business in which you use your apparent weaknesses to your advantage. You might, for example, exploit your woefully low traffic level by delivering an extraordinary level of attention to the customers you do have. The idea is that good news spreads, and the publishers of Web resources should provide lots of good things for their visitors to pass along. You can also go outside your customer base to attract visitors without buying banner ads--you can join a professional association or a Web ring, for example.
In addition to their particular brand of marketing advice, authors Peter Kent (who also wrote the excellent Poor Richard's Web Site) and Tara Calishain do a fine job of explaining more pedestrian technical subjects, such as how to prepare your pages for listing on search engines. --David Wall
Topics covered: Audience identification, basic page design and coding, registering with search engines, creating newsletters and other mailing lists, joining affiliate programs, filing press releases, and tracking reactions.
Book Description
Here is commonsense advice on how to market and promote on the Internet. This book contains methods for getting the word out in cyberspace using electronic press releases, discussion groups, electronic newsletters, product giveaways, opt-in E-mail, and more. It explains sales techniques such as the puppy-dog close, 100 percent guarantees, and selling benefits rather than products. Unlike other books on this topic, this is a down-to-earth explanation of how to market on the Internet from an author with extensive Internet marketing experience.
Customer Reviews:
Even an Mouse Can Now Master Internet Promotion.......2004-05-18
A few weeks ago, I ordered a book from Poor Richard's Web site. I was familiar with Peter Kent's email marketing newsletter. I had perused his website extensively. I was aware that he was one hell of an internet marketer, but I was not fully prepared for the extent of his marketing know- how until I read "Poor Richard's Internet Marketing and Promotions".
The second book in the widely praised "Poor Richard's" series that began with "Poor Richard's Web Site" published by Top Floor Publishing. Kent has earned rave reviews from Amazon.com to Fortune.com to USA Today to Windows magazine for his outstanding knowledge of internet marketing and design.
This book is invaluable to any and every internet marketer. It covers everything from using low-cost press releases to reach hundreds of journalists to giving away products at other peoples' Web sites to preparing your Web site for successful search-engine registration to using associate programs to multiply your sales presence on the Internet to using awards to bring people to your site to buying advertising without breaking the bank to using newsletters your own and other people's to promote your website.
Every page in this book is a goldmine, with internet links and fantastic advice on how to not waste your valuable time online, earn a decent income with online sales tools, and how to do it all on a budget!
To top it off, some of the advice is also available for off- line use as well as he uses simple and effective marketing promotion techniques.
This book is my new personal internet marketing bible, and I'd strongly suggest you make it yours as well!
A decent book on marketing and promotion........2001-06-18
I found this book to be best for covering the basics of marketing and promotion on the internet. However, as is the problem with many internet books, the links and e-mail addresses offered in the book are out of date and don't work. Despite this problem, the book is very helpful and full of good information.
Erroneous and Misleading Information.......2001-06-03
We had high aspirations and scrupulously read this book looking for guidance, all to no avail. This book contains incorrect and misleading information. We tried the various links for additional data many of which were no longer on the web. Others that we contacted via e-mail the response was not what was designated in the book. Peter and Tara provide their e-mail addresses, but they neither respond nor answer questions. The only conclusion that one can draw is that they crank out the books just to sell them and make a quick dollar. They don't really intend to be there for the consumer. This book was a total waste of money. The only thing that it is good for is the garbage or fireplace.
