Book Description

Common Sense and a Little Fire traces the personal and public lives of four immigrant women activists who left a lasting imprint on American politics. Though they have rarely had more than cameo appearances in previous histories, Rose Schneiderman, Fannia Cohn, Clara Lemlich Shavelson, and Pauline Newman played important roles in the emergence of organized labor, the New Deal welfare state, adult education, and the modern women's movement.

Orleck takes her four subjects from turbulent, turn-of-the-century Eastern Europe to the radical ferment of New York's Lower East Side and the gaslit tenements where young workers studied together. Drawing from the women's writings and speeches, she paints a compelling picture of housewives' food and rent protests, of grim conditions in the garment shops, of factory-floor friendships that laid the basis for a mass uprising of young women garment workers, and of the impassioned rallies working women organized for suffrage. From that era of rebellion, Orleck charts the rise of a distinctly working-class feminism that fueled poor women's activism and shaped government labor, tenant, and consumer policies through the early 1950s.

5 out of 5 stars a great book on a powerful topic.......2000-12-18

This book chronicles the lives of four working-class Jewish immigrant women from their common start as survivors of the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire through their careers as labor leaders. These women are absolutely astounding American heroes just waiting to be discovered. In addition to her awe-inspiring subject matter, Orleck also employes a readable and interesting writing style that is true to life and avoids becoming bogged down with useless facts. This book reminded me how much one person really can make a difference simply through conviction and perseverance.

5 out of 5 stars Essential reading for those interested in studying Japan.......2000-01-05

Various movies, books, and other sources have contributed to an "eroticisation" of Japanese, its people and its culture. Steven R. Reed, in his book, Making Common Sense of Japan, sets out to dispel common myths about Japanese culture some Americans still cling to.

In the first chapter, he sets out his framework by which asking whether Japan is a unique nation, and his conclusion on this may startle Americans: only when the United States is eliminated from comparison Japan is not unique. In fact, he says, it has much in common with Western European countries, with similar sizes of population and land space and that they are industrialized democracies. It is America, not Japan that is unique, in that it has a large population, land mass, and huge crime rate.

The second chapter tackles the question of culture. Reed looks at why people act they way they do, and de-emphasizes rationality (this is a sticking point for rational-choice theorists, who would have a rather technical criticism of his analysis), and dispels the notion of a mystical explanation of culture. Reed's conceptualizes culture in terms of "common sense", which is simply the knowledge gained by experience. He says that too much about a country is attributed to its culture, and for this he gives the example of the use of umbrellas. Upon visiting Japan, he found it odd that many Japanese would open their umbrellas when there was a mist, and quickly attributed it to their culture (they are "wimps" or "conformist"). He found, that after walking for a short period during a mist, that umbrellas were actually quite practical, because he found that walking in a mist made the shoulders of his suit very wet.

The subsequent three chapters deal with (in order) a structural learning approach, an explanation for Japanese permanent employment, and an the the nature of co-operation between government and business. The first chapter is a bit complicated, but the following two are interesting, especially in his concluding remarks of each chapter. Japanese permanent was a compromise between business and labour after World War II, which meant that in return for less worker autonomy, the unions would gain higher job security. Whether the Japanese like it or not, it's been institutionalized, meaning the cost of changing the system is higher than maintaining it. With regard to business-government co-operation, he says that "bureaucrats are the referees, not the players". He argues that some ministries lack enough enforcement power to force companies to stop cheating in the market, but more often than not, a threat is often enough to get companies to fly right.

In the concluding chapter Reed argues for a "reconceptualization of the market." He goes on: "We need to recognize that markets are created by governments and can be manipulated by governments...We need to study markets as institutions, not icons." Reed also makes some remarks on what America can learn from Japan, using his two examples of permanent employment and business-government co-operation. He fails to mention what Japan could learn from America, but it's a minor quibble. Another quibble is that I would have liked for him to touch on more topics than the two, for instance the legal system. But I really enjoyed the book, if not just for the main text but for the extensive notes in the back of the book, where he talks about his experiences with his students will lecturing at university and other wisdom. This book is essential for anybody who wishes to learn about Japan as a country and the Japanese as a people.

While the book purports to merely dish out common sense for the 1970's, it is just as relevant 30 years later. Who needs theory (although the book contains enough to keep you occupied if you so choose), when you've got action? If you want to learn how to take back *your* work, read this book!

I love this book for my 5 yo who has been in Preschool for 2 years now and we have so many pictures and great things to remember. That instead of putting them in a album with her sister's pictures too. She has it all to herself. When her sister starts Preschool, I will do the same for her...

              4 out of 5 stars Nice book.......2007-01-04

I really like this book...it has almost everything I was looking for in a school memories book. The only major thing that I wish it had was the plastic sleeves to include anything loose....you have to provide those yourself.

              5 out of 5 stars A great keepsake!.......2006-09-09

Before my daughter started kindergarten, I bought three of these books, one for each of my kids. My daughter is now in second grade, and my middle son in nursery school. I love these books. The binder format allows you to add plastic sleeves with photos or other mementos, or even remove pages you don't need/want to fill out. Another feature I like is involving my kids. For each year of school, the child draws a picture of him or herself and writes his or her "signature." I already know that in years to come I'll enjoy seeing how my kids have changed and grown! This keepsake book is perfect because it is so versatile, takes into account all of the things you'd like to record, and even changes as the years go on to reflect the different interests of growing children. I love this book, and highly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars Best memory book so far...........2006-07-11

This book has many features for preschool-5th gr, medical, birthdays, vacations, etc. It is a great layout w/binder to add more pages and plastic inserts. The book does not include plastic pockets for photos, but easily inserted. If you are interested in scrapbooking, but don't know where to start or don't want to do so much work...this book is perfect. I plan on getting the jr/sr high chronicles for 6-12th grade.

Materials include 2 cover pages (one for mistakes), 50 book pages (15 book pages are included in the book production standard price), a set of 10 Creations by You Markers, tape for adhering photos, a post paid return envelope, instructions, and return order form, and the price of one Hardback Book. The return order form is used to purchase extra book copies, special options, and your return shipping fee. The finished book made from these materials is 8.5" by 11" in size.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorites of the series.......2000-03-23

I really love all the fab five books, and this was no exception. I thought it was really cool how they had first-person accounts from each of the fab fivers. I loved how Jana and Taffy made up- everyone is always dissing Jana because she acts immature sometimes, but at least she realizes it and tries to mend her faults. Beth's memory was really good, too, on how she learned it's okay to be your own person. The other memories were fun to read as well, and the yearbook section was SO COOL! I wish these books were still in print so you could read it too.

                    4 out of 5 stars Interesting memories..........1999-10-26

This was more real than most of the others books in this series. I loved the first-person accounts of each of the Fab Five. Neat how Christie actually MET Diana of Windsor. I could imagine dear Diana as she was portrayed...Diana was always so sweet & polite. The memory that captured my attention the most was Beth's. Poor Beth was sometime ridiculed because she's loud, funny, dramatic, & creative. She also has a vivid imagination to think up the basketball costume for the media club's cable show. It's too bad that the other kids didn't appreciate it, even the usually open-minded Funny & Shane. I really felt for Beth when Beth overheard two girls making fun of her in the bathroom & then later kids teased her in a mean way. Beth reminds me of Claudia Kishi & Abby Stevenson from the BSC series. Beth & Katie were my two favorite characters of the series with Christie & Mona (who reminds me of the BSC's Mary Anne Spier) not far behind. I kind of see Dekeisha & Whitney being friends with Christie, Katie, Beth in the future, maybe high school & Jana (who's still glued to her ever-devoted boyfriend Randy) & Melanie drifting away from them. I thought the little signatures were cute; it made the book look like an actual yearbook. Although many of the characters were shallow & boy & appearance-obsessed, there were some good characters in here that I would have like to see developed more in future books, namely Katie Shannon, Beth Barry, Christie Winchell, Dekeisha Adams, Whitey Larkin, Mona Vaughn, Curtis Trowbridge, & Shane Arrington.

5 out of 5 stars Good Books Lost.......1999-07-09

The books in this series were the first real books that I read willingly on my own as a child. It is sad that they are no longer printed and other children will never have them to treasure forever.

                    5 out of 5 stars WOW! WHAT A BOOK! I THINK I EVEN CRIED,.......1997-07-15

I'M ONLY 12 YEARS OLD, BUT ONE THING IS FORSURE I LOVE THIS BOOK, BETSY HAYNES IS A WONDERFUL AUTHOR AND THE FABULOUS FIVE SERIES IS MY FAVOURITE. IT SHOULD DEFFINATELY BE IN PRINT. REVIEW BY: SAMANTHA HAYE
