"the problems with teens today is that they do not" care.Mostly Ithink that it's the parents fault for not telling them about sex and then sitting down talking to them about it.this way things like what happend in this book dont happen to you. alot of parents say that wont happen to my kids i ttaought them about sex,but the question is now is did you teach them everything or just what you thaought they need to know?Think about it.Do you even know if your kid/kids are sexually active? You may think that they will tell you but it takes alot for a kid to tell there parents that they are having sex and that is what most parents dont think about. maybe you should.Make the difference talk to your kids about sex and tell them everything.

                  Book Description

As a teacher, you are already doing an excellent job in the classroom. Nevertheless, with the implementation of No Child Left Behind, and as more states encourage validation of teaching effectiveness, NBPTS certification remains the one standard by which you can establish unquestioned credibility.

National Board certification not only validates—but also reflects—excellent teaching. According to research provided by the NBPTS, board certified teachers outperform their peers in 11 of 13 key teaching dimensions. They are also more adept at recognizing why students succeed or fail on academic tasks, engaging students, and improvising when faced with unexpected occurrences.

Nevertheless, the NBPTS certification process is a daunting endeavor. As beneficial and validating as it may be, obtaining this certification is difficult, time-consuming, and challenging.

So, You Want to Become a National Board Certified Teacher? will aid you in your quest to pass the rigors of the NBPTS portfolio development and testing. It will take you step by step through each of the four entries of the portfolio compilation, and make sure you stay on track through every stage of the process.

So, You Want to Become a National Board Certified Teacher? is designed to offer successfully proven strategies to help you become more productive throughout the certification process, and avoid many of the pitfalls of the 60% first-time failure rate.

Chapters include readiness (self-examination), key `buzzwords' to consider in writing your entries, critical teaching strategies to employ in the taping process, as well as numerous helpful websites for further assistance.

“I found this book to be very helpful and sound. For the `newbies' I highly recommend investing in this book! Jerry is extremely knowledgeable and he helped me through the process…”
                  —Eleanor Joyce, NBCT, Virginia

“Thank you for simplifying the process for us! The book has helped me tremendously in organizing my thoughts. Thanks for the impact you've made…”
—Karuna Chettri, Montessori Primary Teacher, Maryland

5 out of 5 stars Not an exhaustive tome, but for what it purports to do--excellent!".......2007-10-16

As others have pointed out, this little book is a helpful, motivating supplement to your NBPTS instruction and information guide. The help to me was that it verified what I was doing correctly, and stimulated some ideas regarding phrasing and wording that I might not have thought of.

Since what I write--not so much what I teach--is what will determine my score, I felt much more comfortable having this little handbook along the way. While I wish there might have been more on the taking the test, the rest of the book was well-worth the inexpensive price on Amazon. Highly recommended (for the job it purports to do).

I plan on purchasing the author's mentor book out of curiosity alone.

3 out of 5 stars So you want to become a Natioanl Board Certified Teacher?.......2007-10-10

This is a helpful book in the early stages. It is an easy read. It is motivational. Get this book if you are curious, not necessarily if you are already involved.

5 out of 5 stars "One of the best investments I've made in my teaching profession...".......2007-08-06

Just finished reading "So, You Want to Become a National Board Certified Teacher?" and it may be one of the best investments I've made in my teaching profession so far.

After 30 years at IBM, I decided the best way to give back would be to teach. I just finished my first year as a second grade teacher and plan to apply for NBCT as soon as I'm eligible in June 2008. (Old broads can't afford to waste time :-) I'm planning to use this book over the next 24 months to help me prepare for the NBPTS process. Thanks!

                  5 out of 5 stars National Boards.......2007-05-31

I purchased this book along with another National Boards book. Both have been helpful tools.

4 out of 5 stars Worth the Money!.......2007-02-03

If you have already shelled out the money to become Nationally Board Certified then you will want to spend a little more to make sure you get it right the first time. I wish I had this book the first time around. The buzzwords are particularly helpful. The format of this book is a little easier to navigate than other NBPTS books. I found that it was worth the price.

                  Book Description

"Vesilind’s book will serve as a valuable resource, not only for graduate students on the threshold of academic careers, but also for current assistant professors in need of a mentor and even for those top undergraduates deciding whether a doctorate followed by college teaching is the best use of their talents. Combining good-humored criticisms of academia with sincere defense of the contributions of professors, Vesilind gives informal and, more importantly, frank advice for every stage of the career, from the career choice to retirement."

--Eugenia P. Gerdes, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences

                  Bucknell University

Maybe you’d like to combine the two loves of your life—teaching and scholarship—and perhaps build a satisfying and profitable academic career, but you’re not sure if this is really what you want or how to go about it. Or maybe you’ve made up your mind but need some good advice on how to succeed. If so, this book is written for you. So You Want To Be a Professor begins with a discussion of jobs in academia and how to find them. Chapters cover a wide range of political skills for future academic success, including lecturing, organizing a course, meeting your first class, testing, maintaining a research program, and writing for publication. No other book provides such a practical overview of essential career-building skills. Even junior faculty will benefit from the advice in this engaging, comprehensive book.

3 out of 5 stars may be accurate if you are a white male.......2002-01-29

After getting approximately 10 books on how to be a professor for Christmas, I was least impressed with this one, mainly for two reasons.
                  1. The author seems to be somewhat clueless when it comes to being female or non-white (or disabled or homosexual etc.) in academia. For example, at one point he says he doesn't understand why questions about marital status or children should be banned from the interview.
                  2. He contradicts himself many times. In the prologue he claims that academia is a meritocracy (something none of the other books I got seem to believe), but later makes it sound like it isn't. Additionally he claims that there are many institutions where research is not important or necessary (also something none of my other books believe), but in later chapters denies this.

His chapter on how to overcome teaching anxiety looks pretty good, but I would take the rest of what he says with a grain of salt....

4 out of 5 stars Don't be misled by the subtitle.......2000-06-14

Don't let the subtitle fool you-there's something in here for everyone in academia, whether you've just signed up for grad school, just gotten tenure, or have attained that coveted full professor status. Developed from a course the author taught, the book is full of the same tongue in cheek humor that characterizes Dr. Vesilind's teaching. More than a "how to get the job" manual, this book covers not only "how to excel at the job once you have it" but "why excel at the job once you have it". The final chapter-"The academic career" is a must for those discouraged souls in the postdoctoral trenches-we all started down this road for a reason and it helps to remember why. As a scientist, I found the guide especially helpful, as most guides to academia are written with humanities professors in mind. While this book is applicable to careers in both the sciences and humanities, it doesn't overlook some of the fundamental differences between the fields in how the system "works".

                  Book Description

A humorous and heart-warming view of the challenges and successes of those who teach special education, this book will have you laughing while you view the world of special education for the first time or because you recognize the humor and joy from your own experiences. This is not a "how-to" book on becoming a special education teacher or a book of lesson plans for school. It is a book which expands your perspective of life itself, which has to have humor in it to be a joy.

5 out of 5 stars I highly recommend this book.......2006-06-22

Working with Special needs children can come with quite an array of challenges. Jim has taken the journey of teaching them, and brought out the humor and lessons learned daily. Even when aggression and untimely behavior are issues, he has a way of putting one's self at ease and is able to cope with these matters in creative ways.

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining, intriguing, a must read!.......2006-06-21

Once I picked this book up, I couldn't put it down. I loved the way Jim shares the joys and struggles of working with kids with Autism in such a unique way. As he tells real-life stories, sometimes humorous and sometimes not so much, one can see the absolute love he has for this unique group of individuals. I highly recommend this book even if you are not a special education teacher. It makes for good reading for anyone. "Laughing and Loving With Autism" by Wayne Gilpin, also offers light-hearted reading for a sometimes very challenging syndrome, and through his stories, gives a much needed understanding.

                    5 out of 5 stars school politics.......2005-12-18

This book focuses on the politics involved in the educational system. It is not a manual on the nuts and bolts of teaching techniques. As the book cover states, "Learn experienced strategies on dealing with supervisors, colleagues, parents and students." I rated this book five stars precisely because it deals extensively with school politics, a topic not widely covered in educational textbooks. This guide should be included on the list of required reading for education majors to complement works which concentrate on teaching techniques. After exposure to countless educational theories, a student will also appreciate reading about real life experiences in the classroom. The breezy, conversational tone of this book makes it an easy read.

1 out of 5 stars Part of the reason teachers aren't respected enough..........2005-04-14

are books like this one. The author clearly means well, yet she writes as if her readers were in elementary school, or worse, just not very intelligent. Her audience consists of (I'm hoping, anyway) educated, thoughtful adults trying to decide whether and how to pursue a challenging career, and they deserve more strategies or links to resources and less anecdotal fluff. Advice such as "Enjoy the student in your class more" (referring to disruptive/ED students) is not only condescending but completely unhelpful. A new teacher learning how to manage a classroom needs specific suggestions, not platitudes. If it's politics the author wanted to cover, she should have limited herself to that topic, and let others handle classroom management techniques, motivation, etc.

If you are considering teaching, or are about to embark on your teaching career, Harry Wong's "The First Days of School" is much more useful. His suggestions for establishing your classroom environment are specific, well-explained, and well-tested (he has interviewed hundreds of teachers over many years). He also assumes a capable, intelligent readership.

3 out of 5 stars For student teachers and brand new teachers.......2002-09-12

It is not the fault of the author that this book was written up the way it was in my local paper. It was written as a book for teachers who are not familiar with the political process of the schools. I had taught for three years, but was not sure of all the politics that seem to take place in the higher levels that affected those of us who just wish to teach.

This is a very good book for starting teachers who have not had much experience in the school system. It gives a basic outline of many factors you might experience; however, I would not recommend it to anyone who has had a year or more experience in the school system.

Kudos to the author who wrote the book because of a bad experience she had and did not want other new teachers to go through.

                    Book Description

Coming on the heels of the media announcing a national teacher shortage, this book outlines why people become teachers and helps readers reflect upon their own history with teachers before making a commitment to a teacher education program. The pros and cons of the profession are discussed, as well as how to choose the right subject and grade. Common myths are explored and debunked, such as that old adage, Those who can do, and who can't, teach. The book is designed for the general public as well as students in introductory courses in education. Also includes invaluable references and hints of employment.

1 out of 5 stars Not worth the money.......2003-11-27

There were very few items in this book that applied to teaching in Colorado and, from what I know of other states, elsewhere. I thought it was interesting that NCATE approval was listed as important in the quest for a good teacher education program. She may want to do more research outside "her realm" the next time she chooses to write about this subject.
