Book Description

A Macroeconomics Reader brings together a collection of key readings in modern macroeconomics. Each article has been carefully chosen to provide the reader with accessible, non-technical, reflective papers which critically assess important areas and current controversies within modern macroeconomics. The book is divided into six parts, each with a separate introduction highlighting the relevance of the ensuing articles. The areas covered include: Keynes's General Theory, Keynesian economics and the Keynesian revolution, monetarism, rational expectations and new classical macroeconomics, real business cycle approach, new Keynesian economics, and economic growth.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent complement to classroom Macro.......2005-09-23

This is a great collection of Macro articles; I would recommend it for any student who either (a) loves Macro in class and wants to read more about it or (b) feels queasy about all of the abstract models from class but entertains a curiosity about how Macro is actually relevant to the real world.

I was a (b) kind of person, but a professor recommended this book, and I'm glad I bought it (used, of course). Snowden and Vane have compiled a semi-chronological collection of essays that cover the evolution of Macro, from Keynes's "General Theory," through Friedman's Monetarism, the rational expectations revolution, real business cycle theory, and more recent schools of thought. Understanging all of the Macro worldviews that the last century has seen, along with their relative merits is REALLY useful in relating each of the models from class.

If you want a crash course in the historic progression of macroeconomic thought, read Chapter 1, written by the authors. They do a great job of detailing the major schools and transitions without getting bogged down in minutae.

In the Preface, the authors try to sell this book for advanced undergraduate study. I'd recommend it to graduate students as well. Those in their early years of graduate study could use a little context for all of those multipliers they're cranking out. Also, many of the articles will be out of range for the typical American undergraduate.

So why only 4 stars? The "Reader" is a little dated, and still very expensive. The most recent theory article is from the mid-1990s. I'm keeping an eye out for an updated edition. Snowdon and Vane have published a new edition of their own book, "Modern Macroeconomics," so a new "Reader" is overdue.

3 out of 5 stars Too many "Interpreting Keynes" articles.......2004-11-16

Snowden and Vane provide the reader with a potpourri of different articles representing most of the existing schools of macroeconomic thought, ranging from Old Keynesian to New Keynesian,Monetarist,New Classical,Rational Expectations and Real Business cycle theorists. The major problem the editors and authors of these republished academic journal articles face is that they all either believe that Keynes provided no mathematical model of his theory of effective demand in the General Theory(GT) or they believe that there is a mathematical model specified but, based on the claims of Joan Robinson,Austin Robinson and Richard Kahn, there are many mathematical errors running through the GT.It is easily demonstrated that both views are incorrect. This brings us to Part I of this book ,which deals with the"What did Keynes(really)mean"literature. All of the contributions are flawed. This includes the articles by Coddington,Patinkin,Gerrard, and Tobin. All of these authors are unable to integrate any of Keynes's derivatives.Taking the antiderivative automatically would allow any mathematically literate economist to know exactly what Keynes meant because one would obtain the basic functions of Keynes's model of the GT.Consider the derivative specified by Keynes on pp.55-56 ,footnote 2 of the GT.It is that dZ/DN=w .Simple integration yields Z=wN+P,where P is the constant of Integration. Now Keynes specifies that D=pO four times on pp.282-285 of the GT.p is defined to be an expected price.O=F(N),where N equals total employment and O equals real output.P is defined five times on pp.282-285 as being expected profit. In chapter 3,Keynes states that setting D=Z is what the GT is all about. It is obvious that pO=wN+P or that P=pO-wN.Neither Patinkin, who dealt with this same footnote in five other journal articles and 3 books,Coddington,Gerrard,or Tobin,or any economist since 1936 has used simple integration to solve the"What did Keynes Really(really) Mean? "debate."Gerrard spends his entire time "interpreting the interpretations."He could have solved the entire question in 60 seconds by simple integration.

This book presents a collection of "classic" (published) articles on the RBC literature. Nevertheless, the first two chapters (written by the editors) present a simplistic and incomplete account of the methodological improvements in Macro that are due to RBC.

    Book Description

Consumption affects every aspect of the contemporary world, from the most intimate moments of everyday life to the great geopolitical struggles that have been set in train by the forces of globalization. Consumer culture has recast the world in its own image, and we are only just beginning to make sense of the enormous social, political, economic, moral, and environmental implications. This Reader offers an essential selection of the best work on the Consumer Society.

By drawing from the Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, The Consumption Reader presents the history and geography of consumer societies, the social and political aspects of consumer culture and the discourses and practices of consumption. It reaches back to the consumer revolutions of the eighteenth century and spans the globe. The reader focuses in particular on the subjects, objects, spaces, and technologies of consumer societies. In addition to outlining these vital components of consumer societies, it also provides an accessible insight into the theoretical debates that surround the interest in consumption and consumerism.

      Book Description

What is the relationship between gender and consumerism? Jennifer Scanlon gathers a collection of readings and archival materials to explore the multiple and contradictory ways in which women and men consume. Interdisciplinary and cross-cultural in scope, The Gender and Consumer Culture Reader introduces the reader to some of the most compelling issues and arguments in this growing field of study. In questioning traditional ways of analyzing the relationships between gender and consumer culture, these essays analyze the liberatory and oppressive nature of consumer culture in both historical and contemporary contexts.

The scholars gathered here look at the gendered relationship between the home and consumer culture, individual and group identity through purchasing, the supply side of consumer culture, and the ways in which consumers embrace, resist, and manipulate the messages and the activities of consumer culture. Topics range from white middle-class female shoplifters to the gendered depiction of Native Americans in nineteenth-century advertising, from gay men's acquisition of domestic space in early twentieth-century New York to black and Latino men's cultural resistance through dress. Archival materials link the essays in each section, creating a further historical context, and providing a connection between the readings and larger questions and issues currently being debated about gender and consumer culture.

Contributors include Andrew Heinze, Erika Rappaport, George Chauncey, Steven M. Gelber, Jeffrey Steele, Ann McClintock, Robert E. Weems, Jr., Lillian Faderman, Malcolm Gladwell, Jennifer Scanlon, Lizabeth Cohen, Jane Bryce, Susan J. Douglas, Kenon Breazeale, Kathy Peiss, Elaine S. Abelson, Natasha B. 3 out of 5 stars Interesting.......2002-05-19

Most of the time, this reads like a text book--or at least some sort of book you'd have for a class. But that's not a bad thing. This just isn't something you pick up just for fun. You have to be interested.

I have a growing interest in women's studies, so anything releating to gender is of interest to me. Most of the essays in this book are interesting glimpses of small aspects of gender (often coupled with race or class, sometimes in historical contexts) in the consumer culture. The specialized information is very interesting, and the accompanying pictures and graphics add to it.

Some of the contributions, however, are rather dull. Don't be afraid to skip something you don't want to read. Just go to the next article. Chances are, you won't be missing much.

I recommend not reading the "introduction to students," however--especially if you're not a student. But even if you are, as I am, it's a little dull and, well, pointless. Just get to the good stuff. It is a rather good examination of gender in the consumer culture.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Reading for Open Economy Macroeconomics.......2003-08-08

Dr Ugur's edited book on open economy macroeconomics is a long-waited and impressive textbook in many ways. It is not only a well-organized and enticing textbook for intermediate and advanced macroeconomics, but also a good example of combining knowledge with teaching experience. The book is also good in introducing the students to seminal contributions as well as current debate in open economy (international) macroeconomics. What makes the book different from the other textbooks is that it "... aims to go beyond the closed-economy framework of the open economy macroeconomics textbooks and incorporate theory into policy design and implementation rather than other way around." And it does very succesfully.

The book contains fifteen chapters organized araound nine themed parts containing almost all issues in current open economy (international) macroeconomics -except for stabilization policy issues specific to developing countries. Each of the nine themed sections contains an introduction (which lays the theoretical and historical background relevant to the issues covered), questions for discussion, suggestions for further reading, and a very extensive list of references. These editorial features enhance the book's role as a textbook and makes it an essential source for open economy macroeconomics reading.

Dr Ugur's own chapters on the Mundell-Flemming model and the theory of macroeconomic policy-making are innovative and constitute significant contributions to the debate on these issues.

In conclusion, I strongly recommend this exceptional open economy macroeconomics reader as an essential source of teaching and reading, and also as a useful guide to policy-making isuues in open economies.

              Product Description

Real World Macro, 24th edition, is a lively, thought-provoking alternative to mainstream economics textbooks. Real World Macro asks the questions that standard textbooks try to avoid: What's so great about growth? Is unemployment "natural"? Why should inequality matter? Along with covering the basics--monetary and fiscal policy, productivity and investment, inflation and unemployment--Real World Macro includes a chapter on major controversies in macroeconomics, such as the legacy of Keynesianism in the United States and the basics of Marxist economic theory. It also takes a look at international trade and finance, covering such topics as the debt crisis and arguments for and against "free trade." The thoroughly updated and revised 24th edition contains new chapter introductions reviewing the concepts examined in each article, discussion questions relating them to a standard textbook, and new articles addressing the latest real world issues and controversies, including topics like Social Security, the bursting of the housing bubble, offshoring, the declining dollar, tax cuts, and the persistence of the racial and gender gap in jobs and income. While Real World Macro is a great supplement to any mainstream text, its articles have been keyed to David Colander's popular textbook, Economics, and its macroeconomics "split." Real World Macro's engaging articles are drawn from the pages of Dollars & Sense, the award-winning magazine of popular economics. Dollars & Sense also publishes Real World Micro, Current Economic Issues, The Wealth Inequality Reader, Real World Globalization, Grassroots Journalism, Striking a Balance: Work, Family, Life, Real World Banking, The Environment in Crisis, Introduction to Political Economy, and Unlevel Playing Fields: Understanding Wage Inequality and Discrimination.

                            Book Description

This book deals with the urgent task of shedding light on the creation of Palestinian nationalism and national identity. It explains how Palestinian nationalism (as well as the very meaning of Palestinian national identity) is constantly being recreated, as it oscillates between the notions of "struggle" and "suffering." The book draws on official PLO documents, intifada leaflets and extensive oral history. It will add to our understanding of the formation of nationalism in general terms, in the way that it illustrates how nationalism is produced in the incessant interplay between external processes and structures and internal creative dynamics.
