5 out of 5 stars Basic Book on Communication Skills.......2007-01-02

This is a good basic book on improving communication skills. In communicating, we seek to get our message across to others. The communication process involves the sender of the message, the use of the appropriate communication channel, the receiver and feedback. This process leaves room for error, with messages often misinterpreted by one or more of the parties involved. This causes unnecessary confusion and counter productivity. The author comes up with tips and ways to ensure effective communication. A message is successful when both the sender and the receiver perceive it in the same way.

What the author writes sounds obvious but we tend to forget, communicate badly, and often make a bad situation worse by the way we communicate. Those wishing to learn the basics of communication or just want to refresh their expertise in this field will find the book useful and helpful.

The book will help the reader to understand effective communication, and explains how to communicate your message in the best possible way. After reading the book, you should have a better understanding of how to communicate effectively, to people and groups, through spoken, written and non verbal communications.

5 out of 5 stars For the Discerning Communicator.......2006-12-29

Noah Webster tells us "Communicate" means to impart; to give to another, to bestow, something the receiver holds, retains, and enjoys. And what person couldn't benefit from learning how to communicate with clarity?

If you have ever spoken to anyone in your life, used a telephone, write or send e-mails, you'll welcome the action steps you can learn instantly in: 101 Ways to Improve Your Communication Skills Instantly by: Jo Condrill and Bennie Bough, Ph.D.

While there are many well written books on "communication" skills throughout your local Barnes & Nobel, few are able to please the discerning communicator. But, Jo Condrill and Bennie Bough has done just that.

This handbook is a breeze to implement. It will save us all from Foot-In-Mouth Dis-Ease. The authors ask: "Have you ever agonized over what you would've; should've and could've said?" I really appreciate when a book shows me what to do, instead of just tell.

The book has sold over 70,000 copies, translated into eleven languages by publishers in foreign countries, and is sold worldwide.

As a communicator you know the value in thinking and speaking clearly.

Communication at it's' best is a two-way transaction. I speak a thought, you listen. You speak, I listen.

But, sometimes people misinterpret what they hear, either because we were not crystal clear, or for other reasons. Listening requires practice, and this communication handbook also explains how to listen in order to improve communication.

I hope you enjoy this book as much as I have.

4 out of 5 stars Not a hardback book.......2007-01-18

The reviewers who commented negatively may have confused this item with another. This is NOT a BOOK. It is a recording.

1 out of 5 stars Extremely unhelpful.......2000-12-04

I bought this book, hoping to learn something new about communication skills, what I found was a list of common sense every day advises, which I'm sure everyone is familiar with, this book did not help me at all, it would probably help someone who came out of jungle, for this book is as basic as they come.

1 out of 5 stars No help.......2000-06-29

When I purchased this book, I was expecting to find new ways to improve my communications instantly. What I got from this book was a list of common sense items. Only about 10 % of this book helped. I expected more.

5 out of 5 stars keeping the book at my fingertips for a constant resource.......1999-06-28

I keep this book next to my office desk and use if frequently for a resource for ideas when giving presentations or planning any kind of a meeting. The information contained in this book is very valuable and is always at my fingertips. Thank you for this wonderful book making communication easy and fun.

5 out of 5 stars The audiobook gives excellent strategies that work.......1999-02-28

The audiobook was well recorded and well organized. I have used 20 of the strategies to date and they have made a tremendous difference in my personal life and especially in the way I communicate with my employees.I look forward to utilizing many more of these tips to continue to increase my communication skills.

5 out of 5 stars Helpful and readable.......2002-12-18

Business Writing Makeovers should be useful to business people, teachers of writing, and anyone who wants to write better. It is also fun to read: I enjoyed the letters in which a company official complains to a supplier that the huge ice sculpture ordered for a sales conference had been set up so it melted onto an electrical unit, causing a short circuit that ruined the conference's most important presentation. Roddick's sample letters and emails show ways to make your writing more precise, concise, correct, and graceful. They will help you choose the right tone to adopt in a letter, the right details to include, and the right structure to convey information and ideas. I found good suggestions here for writing with greater tact, better grammar, and stronger impact. Roddick's own writing is elegant and clear--an excellent example for her readers.

      5 out of 5 stars Writing Right.......2002-10-31

Business Writing Makeovers by Hawley Roddick is a tremendously useful book. It is full of excellent information and advice that would benefit both business and non-business writers. Roddick's use of before and after letters, memos, reports, etc. is a practical and effective way to make important points. The concise checklists that follow are valuable aids. And joy of joys, the examples of writing deal with varied subjects and issues that are interesting, informative, and entertaining to read about! I highly recommend Business Writing Makeovers to anyone who wants to be the best communicator he or she can be.

      5 out of 5 stars Everybody's business.......2002-10-19

The book covers so many occasions for communication, in and out of what is strictly business, that it is a useful guide to writing in general. It warns of pitfalls and recommends ways around them, but what I found most engaging were the transformations from Original to Makeover, the details and stories coming into focus: the "demotion" story, for instance, or the "retirement" details. Besides its practical purposes, the book discovers the inner workings of many business activities, and it is indeed enlivened by the novelist's invention.

Writing that Works, by Kenneth Roman, is a great, great, book on how to improve your writing on the job. Even if the only writing on your job is to reply to an occasional e-mail, this book will improve your writing immensely. This is one of the top three writing for the job guides I've read (out of dozens), right up there with "Plain English at Work", and "The Elements of Style".

5 out of 5 stars Concise, practical, effective!.......2006-07-02

If you are looking for a concise and practical guide to business writing, then you've found the right book. It is organized well allowing you to zoom in on the specific advise you are looking for (e.g., memos, letters, emails, reports). The chapters are easy to scan so you can readily zoom into areas that you feel would be most useful to you. The book provides specific examples that well illustrate the principles touted in the book. This was one of the main books used in a Business Communication class at NYU's Stern School of Business. I also found the Guide to Managerial Communication (7th Edition) helpful.

5 out of 5 stars Elements of Style for MBAs.......2002-12-30

This expanded version of an earlier edition of two seasoned advertising executive' original writing guide is something like Elements of Style, but aimed squarely at someone writing for business purposes (e.g., one of the ten chapters is "Asking for Money". There is a useful afterword describing a dozen more books to help you write better. Recommended as a good starting point for any business person wanting to write more effectively.

              The Death Row Interviews

By Stephen G. Michaud and Hugh Aynesworth

Ted Bundy: Conversations With A Killer, the death row interviews that chilled the nation in the 1980's, are again available in an updated paperback edition through major bookstores and online booksellers.

Drawn from more than 150 hours of taped interviews by authors Stephen G. Michaud and Hugh Aynesworth, CONVERSATIONS WITH A KILLER takes readers inside the mind of an infamous sex criminal (one of the best-known serial killers of the past 100 years). In these timeless and unique interviews, Bundy gives both law enforcement professionals and the general public a close look at how this special breed of criminal thinks and behaves.

              2 out of 5 stars Can't Recommend It.......2007-06-25

I found this little number in my local used bookstore. Having been fascinated with Ted Bundy over the last couple of years but yet to read anything in depth about him, I bought it, hoping to learn something new.

Unfortunately, "Conversations With A Killer"'s biggest flaw is Bundy himself. I feel really bad for Michaud and Aynesworth; they honestly try to write a ground-breaking book about the case, and Bundy promises them before the interviews that he will reveal to them "the truth about everything." How could any print journalist say no? Rather than embarking on the horizon of a new look at Ted Bundy, however, the duo are instead treated to interview after interview of Bundy whipping them around this way and that, never once giving them the kind of information they need.

After initially being asked point-blank about his whereabouts during the crimes he is committed of and clamming up immediately, Bundy is instead offered the ability to speak of these crimes in the third-person, freeing him from self-incrimination. Instead of offering any new outlooks, however, Bundy dances about, choosing to "speculate" about the killer's mental workings and treating us to paragraph after paragraph of half-baked, psycho-analytical noodlings. I'm surprised Michaud and Aynesworth didn't fall asleep while interviewing him; when Bundy's not pumping his side of the testimony full of mostly-nonsensical, winding explanations of the "killer's" mindset, he chooses to be very vague about his choice of words, offering a lot of "could be" and "might have been that, also might have been this" and "I don't know". And, of course, he denies absolutely everything about his involvement in these crimes, standing infuriatingly adamant about his innocence all the while. Michaud and Ayneworth ask him numerous times about his whereabouts during crimes or about the testimony of witnesses, and Bundy is rarely ever able to give them an answer, either sidestepping the question and weaseling his way into another subject, or simply refusing to answer at all.

The book does have a few positive marks, as few as they are. The first few chapters of the book do offer a decent, albiet selective, history of Bundy from youth to the (then) present, revealing an education in words passed on by his mother, crippling shyness during high school, and his strange fetish with socks. Also detailed are his struggles with bi-polar disorder, using his escape from jail in Glenwood Springs as a compelling example. Lastly, one can glimpse some truths behind Bundy's words, including the dangerous influences that both "stress" and pornography had on his transformation into a serial killer. However, while these are great tidbits for a newcomer to Bundy's persona, they're not nearly enough to provide one with a fulfilling look at the man and his life & doings.

As for Michaud and Aynesworth, they humble Bundy at the beginning and are eager to try new approaches, but as the book is chronological, it is easy to grasp their growing impatience with Ted's mind games. Aynesworth gets especially agitated, and his multiple outbursts of anger at Bundy (only to be met with smiles, jokes, denial, irritation, and sidestepping on Bundy's end) are by far the most interesting parts of the book. And that's got to be a sad statement: that the anger of one of the authors at the subject of the book is ultimately more interesting than the sum of the book's parts.

I can't really recommend it. Only those truly interested in Ted Bundy or the way his mind works could grasp much enjoyment out of it. Much of the book will just bore you to tears. An interesting first look at Bundy, it proved to be a vastly unfulfilling one for me, and I hope that Ann Rule's "The Stranger Beside Me" will prove to be much better. Good luck next time, Steve and Hugh.

              2 out of 5 stars A big let-down.......2006-05-25

Pages and pages of verbatim interviews with a megalomaniac, even one as twisted as Ted Bundy, get dull after a while. It would be a necessary reference book for anybody writing a doctoral thesis on Bundy or the psychopathic mind, but really holds little interest for the average reader.

3 out of 5 stars TED BUNDY SPEAKS ABOUT THE PATHOLOGY OF THE KILLER INSTINCT.......2005-10-11

Ted Bundy murdered over 30 women in the late 70's and has a kind of cult status among people who are obsessed with serial killers and voilence, which is not why I read this book. I read this book because I was hoping it would shed light on a problem which seems to be a product of modern American society.
The First half of this book is very interesting. Ted creates a hypothetical psychological model of a killer and in the third person describes how this person developed from a regular guy with deep emotion issues into a full fledged mass murder. That part of the book is very frightening and thought provoking. Ted describes the killer's initial fascination with alcohol and violent pornography. From there he describes the slow progress of the killer instict: how his trips to the pornographic book stores became more frequent and urgent, how he spent a year spying in women's house before almost attacking a woman one night, followed months later by an actual attack, then a rape and killing. He also describes the killer's remorse between killings and his frequent promises that this would be the last one.
Toward the middle of the book it gets pretty boring. The second interviewer takes over and keeps trying to get Ted to admit his guilt, which he won't do. Most of the answers in this half of the book are evasive and tiringly repetitive.
It is redeemed in the last interview in which Ted makes some rather interesting statements about how it is our society which creates the serial killer. He also talks about how this a problem which manifests itself rather early in the life of these sick men,and what's even more frightening, he states that for every man arrested for multiple homicide there are five or six more that are not caught. With a little money, Ted states, a man can kill indiscriminately for the rest of his life without fear of detection. This book is a must read for anyone interested in Abnormal Psychology.

3 out of 5 stars Blah blah blah.......2005-06-11

First, I want to say that I love Ted Bundy and reading anything about him. That's why this book got 3 stars instead of maybe 1 or 2. From everything else I've read about him, this is nothing new. And the way it's presented is so BORING. You can see how manipulative Ted is in his monologues which are often verbose. A lot of times he doesn't make much sense.

If you've read a lot about Ted Bundy, I wouldn't recommend this book. The Stranger Beside Me by Ann Rule is a much better book. I guess if it's your first time reading about him, it might be interesting.

              5 out of 5 stars Great Information.......2004-01-02

Stephen G. Michaud ,again, has done an outstanding job in writting a great book about Bundy.

There ARE some new insights not seen in other books regarding Bundy's crimes (Like details of Naslund's and Ott's murders, and some insight on Donna Manson's fate.

Bundy spent the next 10 years on Florida's Death Row, using legal tactics to delay his execution and offering confessions to his crimes in exchange for a reprieve. After years of living in denial - insisting he was innocent - Bundy finally came clean, although he referred to himself in the third person and claimed the killings were carried out by an "entity" within him.

He said he became obsessed by hardcore pornography involving sado-masochism and bondage and said he enjoyed the feeling of being in complete control of his victims. He said the primary motive was rape and that he had to kill the victims to prevent them testifying against him.

For the last three years, I have waded through the minefield known as the world of publicity. As a New Yorker, I expect the unexpected. However, I was not prepared for all of the hucksters, snake oil salesman, and con artist I found who prey on people who are looking to get quality media training. Standing head and shoulders above that crowd is Gayl Murphy and her book Interview Tactics.

In addition to all of the obvious things you'd expect to see in a book about interviews, she also shares many subtle pieces of information that only a person of her experience could provide. Through her book, she becomes your coach. Like any good coach, sometimes she says what you already know...she just says it in a way that gets you to remember it and to act on it. She doesn't try to change you, she just wants you to put your best foot forward and to understand how he game is played. That's real training.

If you truly want to develop your interview skills, you should invest in yourself and get this book. It has successfully guided me through 65 radio and 12 television interviews this year. I have looked around and there is nothing better.

A fantastic book who guides you to overcome any fears you may have about the Media. With her direct command and knowledge of her field she's a real aid to us who are starting to face the media in our careers. Gayl's advise to create catchy sounbytes is amazing. I have reworked my introductions and presentations to incorporate this and now my approach is much more direct and comprehensable. People get it in seconds, what you do, who you are and what you're trying to accomplish. I love her book, her charisma and her Media Wisdom.

I owe a great deal to Gayl Murphy and INTERVIEW TACTICS -- and I can't say enough in praise for Gayl and her fabulous book! As a newly published author one year ago, I embarked on an amazing journey, from (terrified) Media Virgin to a confident and well-received guest on dozens of radio shows, media interviews, and television appearances. Of all that I went through, including various media training programs, coaching, and preparations, some costing thousands of dollars, INTERVIEW TACTICS remains my personal media Bible -- a HUGE bargain for $29.95.

3 out of 5 stars Did not fulfill my expectations!.......2007-06-24

Okay, you are invited to interview and converse with one of the most deadly serial killers in American History, Theodore Robert Bundy. While I was interested in his background especially his family life and his paternity which might have solved some questions about his genetic composition. Except for when he discusses about possession of items like the television or the stereo that he admits to stealing like a game, do we get to understand his problems. He doesn't know how to relate to people even his devoted wife, Carole, girlfriend like Liz, even his family members like his mother or stepfather. He never really identifies or understands human behavior. Just like the television and stereo, he needs to possess somebody particularly a woman but dead. The book doesn't discuss the necrophilia that drew Ted into placing his victims' heads and other body parts in certain areas because like the Green River Killer, Ted visited them and I won't go any further than that. Even in the prison system, he was embarrassed by his necrophilia which probably would place him lowest scale on the prison system hierarchy even below child molesters since he did murder a 12 year old girl. Not enough mentions of the victims that Ted took away and there were probably a lot more that we don't know about because Ted was slick, mobile, and perfected his set-up in luring his victim like a predator catching his prey and rendering them unconscious and murdering them but maintaining their body parts for his own pleasure at the risk of torturing family members, relatives, friends, and neighbors from continuing their search for their loved ones.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting yet, disappointing.......2006-10-26

This book was slightly a let down, due to no fault of the author. If I had no expectations, it probably would've been very good, but who doesn't have expectations? Especially when they are getting ready to read Ted Bundy's own words, a window into his psyche? But, it's not just the reader who is frustrated with Bundy's hesitant and evasive dialogue. The author, too, voices those same sentiments through the book. Unfortunately, it is not, as I had hoped, some interesting view into the mind of a mad man. But, I suppose I was hoping for the answer to the ever present question of 'why?'. There are no whys here. There are hows, whos, whats and whens, but Bundy will not speak in the first person. He couches everything in the protective cocoon of hypothetical situations, so you aren't exactly sure if he is really telling the truth, or just leading you on. You get a very solid sense of his narcicism, and a disturbing view of his normalcy. While we all hope to see a monster reflected in the page, something recognizable as wrong or dangerous, his words don't ooze evil, and it is easy to see how he was able to fool so many unfortunates. It is an interesting book, and I would still recommend it, but read it with a grain of salt already on your tongue. If you go into it with the wrong idea, it feels anticlimactic.

3 out of 5 stars Informative, yet not as exciting as I had hoped.......2006-07-14

But perhaps this is what would happen when you are reading a sociopath's thoughts. I actually thought it would be more interesting, more first hand, but you find through reading this account, that he still can't admit to himself what he has done. While it allows you to understand the "beast" of being a serial killer, it isn't as gripping to read and descriptive as I hoped it would. I do recommend this book if your interested in Ted bundy, or just interested in the killer mind. It won't be what you think.

                Book Description

The women who starred in low-budget cult movies created many memorable experiences for those fans of late night flicks such as Saturday Night Frights, Movie Macabre and Up All Night. Brinke Stevens, who played Linda in The Slumber Party Massacre, recalls, "Suddenly I was riding in limos, flying to foreign countries for film festivals, appearing on dozens of popular talk and entertainment TV shows, and truly feeling like a glamorous movie star."

This collection of revealing interviews provides insights into the lives of 20 cult film actresses. They discuss the pros and cons of making these movies and the directions their careers have taken since. Among the films they starred in are Night of the Living Dead, The Slumber Party Massacre, Friday the 13th, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Halloween, Sleepaway Camp and Elvira's Haunted Hills.

5 out of 5 stars MEET THE B MOVIE SCREAM QUEENS.......2005-08-15

"B" movie horrors became a cottage industry in the 1980's making stars, even legends out of many women who starred in these low-budget films. Writer Jason Paul Collum interviews 20 of these women in his new book "Assault of the Killer B's" and also gets us caught up with what these women are up to today. The first interview is with Judith O'Dea who played the doomed Barbara in the original "Night of the Living Dead". O'Dea probably doesn't fit the mold of a scream queen and certainly doesn't see herself that way, but the importance of this film is not lost on her or the fans of the horror genre. O'Dea talks about working for George Romero and John Russo's production company in Pittsburgh in the 1960's, doing voice over work for documentaries and how this film came to be. She relates that much of the dialog was ad-libbed such as when she tells Ben what happened to her and her brother Johnny. She also admits to being truly terrified in the scene where she is dragged out of the house by a horde of zombies.

The largest section of the book features the girls of the Slumber Party Massacre series of films. It would seem that this was the most expansive section due to the fact that so many of these women were available for interviews, unlike some of the other horror franchises. Among those featured are Debra DeLiso, Heidi Kozak, Brandi Burkett, and one of the greatest of all Scream Queens, Brinke Stevens. They all share their thoughts on doing these films as well as the other horror films they've been in.

Collum relates his frustration in trying first to track down and then get interviews with many of the actresses who starred in the Friday the 13th films. Many simply could not be located and many that were flat-out refused to be interviewed. It seems that many, including Adrienne King from the first film had their problems with stalkers and obsessed fans and as a result they've tried to distance themselves from these movies. Collum did manage to land Lar Park Lincoln who played the psychic Tina in Friday the 13th part 7 The new Blood. Lincoln, too, had her problems with a stalker but after many years away has recently made a return to film in bit roles. Also interviewed is Kari Keegan from "Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday"

Stars from Nightmare on Elm Street are also featured including Lisa Wilcox who starred in parts 4 & 5, and Lisa Zane who played Freddy Kruegers daughter Maggie in what was supposed to have been the final film in the series, "Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare".

One of the more enjoyable interviews Collum conducted was with Pamela Susan Shoop of Halloween II. Shoop's long list of TV credits include: Mannix, Night Gallery, The Mod Squad, Wonder Woman, The Incredible Hulk, CHiPs, Knight Rider, Murder She Wrote, and many others. But horror fans will always remember her as the beautiful Nurse Karen in Halloween II, who was perhaps the most famous victim of Michael Myers as she was strangled in the hospital hot tub. Shoop relates how she got an ear infection due to the water being so cold in the "hot tub".

Collum also interviews Cassandra Peterson, AKA Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, the women from the Sleepaway Camp Series, and several more. Collum's book is well-researched and the interviews very conversational in tone. There were some notable omissions from the book such as perhaps the two most well-known scream queens Linnea Quigley and Julie Strain, but all in all, Collum did a great job in tracking down the actresses who played in these now legendary cult films.
