Good Professional Guidance.......2002-08-07
I found this book very helpful. I am director of sales, and found a good balance of examples and tips. Most of the resumes are geared toward business professionals, with an emphasis on how to develop your resume with the hiring company in mind. This is important in our industry from a sales perspective, and they teach you the same approach in presenting yourself to the customer, meaning the hiring manager/company.
This book was not helpful for me as a teaching professional........2000-06-09
I needed to get my resume straightened out for applying for jobs as a science educator at a college level or as a disability/deaf rights activist, or maybe going back into Neuroscience which my MS from med school is in. I found this book was okay for people with high school, work experience, and a first degree from college, but not for someone like me who has 3 degrees and numerous experience in speaking to groups and writing for a variety of mediums. This resume definitely is not for those who need to write something closer to a curriculum vitae, but is adequate for everyone else. Needless to say I was somewhat disappointed because it came highly recommended. Karen Sadler, Science Education, University of Pittsburgh
Great resumes and tips for guidance.......1999-12-05
I found this book to be very helpful, and include more variety than others on the market. The online section was good - brief and to the point. I think this is a book for the future on getting your foot in the door.
Very Comprehensive and Creative.......1999-06-08
I just received this book and was pleased to see the variety of resumes. There really are a lot of different ones to mirror. They also included lean and mean tips on job searching, interviewing, working with recruiters, doing stuff online and electronically.

Insights from the other side of the desk...........2005-03-21
Too many salespersons (as well as those who supervise them) do not understand the importance of obtaining permission. Specifically, permission to provide information and thereby begin what then becomes a cultivation-solicitation process. So we continue to be inundated with postal and electronic mail we do not want. Telephone calls from persistent strangers invade our personal schedules. And so forth. Why not take the time to learn how best to approach us? How best to obtain our permission to proceed? All they have to do is ask. The same is true of those who recruit, interview, and hire job candidates.
This is one in a series of volumes in the Approved Series, each of which is written from the perspective of "the person on the other side of the desk," in this instance who buys, interviews, hires, etc. What Schell has done is to interview more than 60 HR professionals to obtain the information which he then carefully organizes within seven Parts:
Effective Job Search Strategies
The HR-Approved Resume
The HR-Approved Cover Letter
HR-Approved Preparation
The HR-Approved Interview
HR-Approved Follow-Up
How to Annoy HR Professionals -- Guaranteed!
NOTE: This last Part all by itself is worth far more than the cost of this book. Reading the previous six Parts first, however, is necessary to derive maximum value.
When concluding his book, Schell shares "Some Final Thoughts" as well as additional information about HR contributors, himself, his research director, and the Approved Series. Those who wish to review -- at no cost, of course -- the full statistical data for all of his surveys are invited to visit the special readers' web page: www.approvedseries.com/readers/hrajir/index.htm. With his reader's permission, of course, Schell will provide periodic updates, special offers, and related information.
As is also true of each of the other volumes in the series, this one really does contain information and counsel of great value to those who sit on BOTH sides of the proverbial desk. That is to say, it will thoroughly prepare HR professionals and others (especially those who are relatively inexperienced) to be much more effective when recruiting, interviewing, and hiring. It can also thoroughly prepare job candidates who participate in that process. Hence the importance of the final Part, How to Annoy HR Professionals -- Guaranteed!
Those who share my high regard for Schell's book are urged to check out Paul Falcone's 96 Great Interview Questions to Ask Before You Hire, Lance A. Berger and Dorothy R. Berger's The Talent Management Handbook: Creating Organizational Excellence by Identifying, Developing, and Promoting Your Best People, Richard Luecke with Peter Cappelli's Harvard Business Review on Hiring and Keeping the Best People, and Bradford D. Smart's Topgrading: How Leading Companies Win by Hiring, Coaching and Keeping the Best People.

Book Description
Mastering the Job Interview delivers a comprehensive overview of the key issues in MBA recruiting and offers in-depth insights on how to develop a winning interview strategy.
New (4th) edition released August 2007.
Customer Reviews:
Concise, both analytical and anecdotal, inexpensive.......2007-10-03
Besides being an excellent Kellogg professor, Chernev knows a thing or two about the job interview process. He puts them all to paper in a style similar to his teaching texts- to the point, absent of fluff, and with a focus on only the important. Buy all of his job search works- they are quick reads, cheap, and all you're going to need
Customer Reviews:
Usefull, maybe too simple.......2007-01-31
Actually, when buying this book I expected some advices and examples, but the book is "examples only". Which is not necessary bad, but... I still expected more "meat".
Anyway, the book is useful, I used it more than once when I needed to write some important message and had no time nor inspiration to make it simple and to the point. Of course, in some cases you have to be careful and have in mind that some examples are applicable only for United States, but not for Europe too (i.e. some motivational letters for job applications in Europe could sound more funny than serious, but...), but even in that situation, I guess it's better with this book than without it.
In general, content is useful, it saves time, but you still have to think about what, and whom are you writing to. But, I guess that you should do it anyway.
Product Description
Tips and strategies for a successful phone interview for people looking for a job and those who have to hire them.
Customer Reviews:
Don't waste your money.......2005-02-23
I was hoping this pamphlet would contain some valuable insight into the psychology of the telephone interview and how the phone interview differs from a "face to face". This pamphlet doesn't contain that kind of information. It doesn't contain any information about a phone interview that is of value. There is exactly one paragraph in the pamphlet that address the specifics of a phone interview as opposed to any type of interview. That paragraph covers the fact that a phone interview lacks visual and tactile information. We can't see the interviewer's body language or facial expressions. Nor do we experience the hand shake. Anyone of average intelligence already knows that. I didn't need to spend $12.99 to find that out.
The pamphlet does contain some very good basic information about interviewing and the interview process. Information that you well obtain many times in the first few chapters of other more valuable books.
This pamphlet is basically a retelling of information culled from other interview books. The author adds nothing new to the subject of interviewing. The author, quite wisely does not profess to have any experience conducting interviews or as a hiring manager.

Customer Reviews:
Something every student should read then act on!.......2004-01-03
Where was this book my first year of college? Choosing a major and making other good choices in my life would have been much easier. However, the idea of "career volunteering" was the one thing that set me on the right path.
