Book Description

Warfighting is an authentic  American philosophy of action that will thrill the  millions of fans of SunTzu's The Art of  War and Musashi's T he Book of  Five Rings. This modern classic of  strategy and philosophy is the quintessential guide to  prevailing in competitive situations, be it war,  work, play, or daily  living.

Sometimes life is war and sometimes business  is war and sometimes you need to call in the  Marines. Over the past two hundred years, the Marines  have developed a reputation for getting the job  done-fearlessly, boldly, and taking no prisoners.  What better role model for the hidden warriors in  ourselves? What better advice to call on when the  stakes are high and sensitivity just isn't going  to work? Written in 1989 as a philosophical and  strategic guide-book for the US. Marine Corps,  Warfighting is a worthy successor  to SunTzu's The Art Of War.  With clarity, brevity, and wisdom, it describes the  basic forces at work in every competitive situation  whether on the field of battle, in the boardroom,  or in the courtroom. With twentieth-century  technology and its emphasis on speed and versatility,  the rules of war and competition have changed.  Warfighting's exploration of  maneuver warfare takes readers beyond Sun Tzu's classic  lessons and provides them a more thorough  understanding of what it takes to fight and win in the  modern world. Currency's edition of  Warfighting features interviews with famous  former Marines including F. Lee Bailey, Ed McMahon,  and Donald Regan. They tell how they have used the  Marine Corps' battle strategies of strength and  straightforwardness as their secret weapons in every  confrontation, whether at a corporate,  departmental. or personal level.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Brilliant, Simple and Profound.......2007-04-18

This is the best book that I've ever read regarding military doctrine-- it elegantly sums up the most relevant points of Clausewitz and Boyd's OODA Loop to come to sound military principle in less than 100 pages. It also includes a number of references to the Eastern military philosophy (think Art of War and the Book of Five Rings, both required reading for the Japanese businessman) and ties them to our Western military philosophy quite elegantly.

If you aren't familiar with Clausewitz then I'd recommend picking up On Strategy by Summers; Warfighting will not give you all of the elements necessary to understand concepts like Friction.

This book travels with me wherever I go-- it is relevant to business and even personal development and is more than worth the price being charged for it.

4 out of 5 stars A Fine Pamphlet, But Not a Manual.......2006-11-20

Warfighting was written for the Marine unfamiliar with maneuver warfare to pick up, flip through, memorize the axioms, and apply in battle. As such, like most other field manuals issued to soldiers, it is a distillation of a large swath of ideas from Sun Tzu to Liddell-Hart. That said, it packs a good punch for such a small work. If, however, you're looking for a more detailed illustration of the principles outlined here, you might take a look at B.H. Liddell-Hart's "Strategy" as well as Thomas Cleary's translation of Sun Tzu's "The Art of War."

Additionally, those westerners who enjoy axioms focusing on the flux of life, war, or what have you might also like to take a look at Heraclitus' "Fragments." The basic tenets of Taoism that permeate Sun Tzu (and, by proxy, "Warfighting") can be equally well found in Heraclitus. His primary "thesis" if you will, "nothing is stationary, life is flux," is the axiom upon which maneuver warfare strategy is founded.

5 out of 5 stars If Sun Tzu were a Marine...........2006-10-14

The US Marine Corp's version of Sun Tzu's Art of War. Concise and direct as would be expected from the Marines, yet with depth enough to make the points clear. A wonderful work for explaining how the Marines fight wars and a good resource for a competive advantage in any context. A handy resource for the military or military history enthusiast. A must read for every Marine. Insight for business leaders and more.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding!.......2006-03-18

I liked this because it's direct(no psychological excuses for your inadequacy). It's short so there's no wading through opinion and hearsay. It's timeless because it's based on principle. It's applicable like Danforth's "I Dare You"(you have to think:"how does this apply to my life"). It's fully referenced so you can dig deeper.I catch myself going back and rereading it all the time(no you can't borrow mine).

5 out of 5 stars Sun Tzu and Clausewitz distilled for the MTV generation.......2005-10-15

Great book that takes elements of traditional knowledge about war making (Sun Tzu, Clausewitz, etc) and combines it with the know-how of war as gathered by the United States Marine Corps in the modern era.

Stacking this book up against the likes of Sun Tzu and Clausewitz, it is probably better than both when it comes to a straightforward, contemporary appreciation of the elements of war.

As other reviewers have observed, there is a tendency for people to get mired in the meaning of Sun Tzu and Clausewitz is probably too complex and heavy-going for most readers.

This book is short, to the point, but has great value. I also like the language and style of the book. Great stuff.

Product Description

Since Fleet Marine Force Manual 1, Warfighting, was first published in 1989, it has had a significant impact both inside and outside the Marine Corps. That manual has changed the way Marines think about warfare. It has caused energetic debate and has been translated into several foreign languages, issued by foreign militaries, and published commercially. It has strongly influenced the development of doctrine by our sister Services. Our current naval doctrine is based on the tenets of maneuver warfare as described in that publication. Current and emerging concepts such as operational maneuver from the sea derive their doctrinal foundation from the philosophy contained in Warfighting. Our philosophy of warfighting, as described in the manual, is in consonance with joint doctrine, contributing to our ability to operate harmoniously with the other Services. That said, I believe Warfighting can and should be improved. Military doctrine cannot be allowed to stagnate, especially an adaptive doctrine like maneuver warfare. Doctrine must continue to evolve based on growing experience, advancements in theory, and the changing face of war itself. It is in this spirit that Warfighting has been revised, and this publication, Marine Corps Doctrinal Publication 1, supersedes Fleet Marine Force Manual 1." --C. C. KRULAK, General, U.S. Marine Corps, Commandant of the Marine Corps

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Basic Marine Corp Doctrine.......2005-12-12

This small, easy to understand manual describes the basic, most fundamental function of the U.S. Marines - warfighting.

This is the updated version, from 1997. It is not intended as a reference manual; it is designed to be read from cover to cover. It has four chapters.

Chapter 1 describes the basic Marine Corp understanding of the characteristics, problems, and demands of war.

Chapter 2 derives a theory about war from that understanding.

Chapters 3 and 4 uses this theory as as the foundation as to how the Marines prepare for war and how they wage war.

This publication describes the philosophy which distinguishes the Marine Corps. This philosophy is the Marine Corps approach to duty in war, in crisis, and in peace.

The book presents this philosophy for all Marines from the commandant to the lowest private in a clear and concise manner. It is expected that all Marines will read and apply it.

    Book Description

Occasionally, militaries during times of peace achieve major warfighting innovations. Terry Pierce calls these 'disruptive innovations'. The more common innovation phenomenon, however, has been that of integrating new technologies to help perform existing missions better and not change them radically. The author calls these 'sustaining innovations'. The central theme of this book is that senior leaders who have successfully managed disruptive innovations disguised them as sustaining in order to ensure their innovations survived.

The recent innovation history suggests two interesting questions. First, how can senior military leaders achieve a disruptive innovation when they are heavily engaged around the world and they are managing sustaining innovations? Second, what have been the external sources of disruptive (and sustaining) innovations?

1 out of 5 stars Save your money..........2007-08-01

This book's vacuous theories are from an academic who has never heard the sound of gunfire. This is "tasteless" frosting and no practical, experience-based cake. This review comes from the perspective of a special operations combat veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom, Enduring Freedom Afghanistan and Enduring Freedom Philippines, working with and as a member of some of the most elite combat formation this nation has ever fielded. Terry Piece's claim to nautical fame is that he won the Arleigh Burke essay contest not once, but twice (and he will be sure to point this out fact to you within the first five minutes of meeting him). While this is a commendable peace-time academic achievement, it is functionally useless and operationally without merit in a time of war.

Despite his perceived expertise as the "Chief of Staff of the Amphibious Forces of the US 7th Fleet" (Largely a paper staff without a mission of consequence), where the metal hits meat, this book is crass. Terry Pierce bases his writing on future warfare abstracts and the excellent works of others in documenting the Battle History of the US Navy. I don't challenge the theories of Terry Pierce...I indict Terry Pierce as leader, and self proclaimed expert. Many of his perceived `advanced' theories are simply those...untested theories. The quality of his leadership and his approaches to doctrine other than his own were often downright ""Flintstonian". His own professional actions do not support his diatribe regarding the flaws of civilian intervention, inter (and intra) service rivalry, to small groups and disguising processes...for all of these flawed qualities embody the spirit and the character of the author.

This book evaluates "... based on new research and case studies, the theories of those who have previously written on military innovation, including Barry Posen, Steve Rosen, and Wick Murray. Highly recommended for academics and military personnel interested in the process of force transformation..." but brings little in the way truly workable innovation. Theory without practical solutions is useless when confronting the huge problems of transformation during wartime today's military faces. This book is more of a regurgitative history lesson rather than a way ahead in the sea of obstacles to true transformation.

Cloaked in his own self-aggrandizement, Terry Piece has applied his personality against many a well-meaning sailor and potentially excellent officers, suppressing the good to advance his subservient minions. "However, personalities are also consequential: the same personality that fights hard for a particular innovation may also fail to protect and promote subordinates likely to sustain the innovation." He did not protect or advance his subordinates; he reveled with self-bemusement as he tormented and picked at his staff until it was a gangrenous wound of ineffectiveness.

Since the author is known quantity to those who have served with him, it is impossible evaluate the work without an evaluation the personal industry that created it. In the end, all works mirror their creator and this one is no different...lofty in its intent, but shallow in its ultimate impact. Save your money...
Go to any of the myriad of other publications which address these same issues in a more thought provoking, profound and most importantly, complete way.

5 out of 5 stars How Do We Get Beyond Machiavelli's Paradox?.......2004-11-30

What is military innovation? Is it the slow, evolutionary process of change that occurs naturally, or is it the disruptive change that changes the character of warfare, and gets everyone excited? Furthermore, how do innovators bring their vision to fruition? When does the military categorically accept an innovation through organizational, doctrinal, or technological alignments? What is the route to success? These are substantial questions that Captain Terry Pierce, U.S. Navy, takes on in this groundbreaking work.

Captain Pierce thoughtfully constructs arguments based on case studies of military innovation that include Marine Corps helicopter warfare and maneuver warfare, to Navy continuous aim gunfire and carrier warfare. The study identifies and examines external and internal causes of disruptive and sustaining innovation, ranging from civilian intervention and inter (and intra!) service rivalry, to small groups and disguising processes.

He concludes that disruptive innovation theory explains why many innovations fail, despite well-meaning, and potentially revolutionary consequences for warfare. However, personalities are also consequential: the same personality that fights hard for a particular innovation may also fail to protect and promote subordinates likely to sustain the innovation.

Overall, this book rates well. Captain Pierce uses an engaging style to keep readers interested, while providing us with the benefit of his military experience and academic research. For readability, it is right up there with Hone, Friedman, and Mandeles' book on American & British Carrier Development. It evaluates, based on new research and case studies, the theories of those who have previously written on military innovation, including Barry Posen, Steve Rosen, and Wick Murray. Highly recommended for academics and military personnel interested in the process of force transformation.

                  Book Description

This book is a survey of exchange-rate economics. Using the latest econometric techniques, it covers the main theories that explain the determination of exchange rates and utilizes recent empirical data on exchange rate behavior.

                  Download Description

In the last few decades exchange rate economics has seen a number of developments, with substantial contributions to both the theory and empirics of exchange rate determination. Important developments in econometrics and the increasingly large availability of high-quality data have also been responsible for stimulating the large amount of empirical work on exchange rates in this period. Nonetheless, while our understanding of exchange rates has significantly improved, a number of challenges and open questions remain in the exchange rate debate, enhanced by events including the launch of the Euro and the large number of recent currency crises. This volume provides a selective coverage of the literature on exchange rates, focusing on developments from within the last fifteen years. Clear explanations of theories are offered, alongside an appraisal of the literature and suggestions for further research and analysis.

                  Book Description

Generalized financial volatility is capitalism's Achilles' heel. And nowhere is the problem of controlling such volatility more acute than in monetary and exchange-rate relationships across countries - the central theme of this book.

The Rules of the Game brings together essays, written over the course of thirty years, by a major figure in the field that analyze and compare a wide variety of important international monetary regimes. These range from the establishment of the gold standard in the nineteenth century through Bretton Woods, the dollar standard, floating exchange rates, the European Monetary System, to current proposals for reforming world monetary arrangements.

The essays are unique in that they specify precisely the rules of the game for each international monetary regime - past, present, and future. For ease of reference, the book offers boxed summaries of each set of rules and then discusses their advantages and disadvantages from the gold standard down to the author's proposal for a common monetary standard for the twenty-first century.

Part I assesses each monetary regime's success in stabilizing prices and exchange rates, while fostering international trade. Part II addresses a central question each country faces: what are the benefits of giving up exchange-rate flexibility to join a common monetary standard? Part III focuses on overall monetary reform for limiting financial volatility and exchange-rate crises in the next century - including whether or not Western Europe should adopt a common currency. The last chapter synthesizes and updates the author's previous writings on rationalizing monetary arrangements among the major industrial countries of North America, Western Europe, and East Asia.

3 out of 5 stars A clear overview of the history of international exchange rates.......2007-07-20

This book is a fine reference for a mainstream neoclassical-Keynesian synthesis view of money and exchange rates. It's a good source for information about the arrangements that governed international trade under the various international agreements of the last 100 years or so.

I give the book three stars for some of its theoretical failures, which is first and foremost, a misunderstanding of the nature of money, and hence, of exchange rates. The book follows much of the economics field in treating money as a creature of the government. That is only the case in the last 35 years or so, which is a kind of radical experiment. Money does not exist because governments say so. If this were true, money could never have developed. Money is a medium of exchange which has everything to do with its status as a store of value. Governments cannot create an item that has value simply by a government seal. All over the world, fiat currencies have lost value rapidly, because the long-term historical value of paper money is zero. Exchange rates operate chaotically, because they depend on arbitrage in foreign exchange markets, but all fiat currencies are inexorably headed toward zero.

While this book is a good reference for how much of the economics field views money, I find it gives a misleading picture of the nature of money. I'd recommend Rothbard's "What has the government done to our money?" for a clearer picture.

                      Book Description

Real Exchange Rates, Devaluation, and Adjustment provides a unified theoretical and empirical investigation of exchange rate policy and performance in scores of developing countries. It develops a theory of equilibrium and disequilibrium real exchange rates, takes up the question of why devaluations are the most controversial policy measures in poorer nations, and discusses what determines their success or failure.

In a lucid fashion, Edwards organizes vast amounts of data on exchange rates - both real and nominal - and discusses their effect on net trade balances, net asset positions, output growth, real wages, and rates of price inflation, analyzed both in time series and through cross country comparisons. Edwards's investigation singles out 39 major devaluation episodes for before and after comparative analyses while simultaneously isolating the separate effects of other important explanatory variables, such as bank credit expansion and changes in the terms of trade.

The first part of the book focuses on theoretical models of devaluation and real exchange rate behavior in less developed countries. Special attention is paid to intertemporal channels in the transmission of disturbances. The second part uses a large cross country data set to analyze the way the real exchange rate has behaved in these nations. The data are also used to test the implications of several theories of real exchange rate determination. The third part analyzes actual devaluation experiences between 1962 and 1982. These chapters examine the events leading to a balance of payments crisis and to a devaluation, exploring the relation between macroeconomic disequilibrium, and the imposition of trade and exchange controls. They also investigate the effect of nominal devaluation on key variables such as the balance of payments, the current account, the real exchange rate, real output real wages, and income distribution.

Sebastian Edwards is Professor of Economics at the University of California at Los Angeles and Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research.

                            Book Description

Previously, there a been a distinct lack of literature on the economic geography of the world's financial centers. This book is set to remedy that gap.

Financial Geography is the only geographical reader explaining the intricacies of high finance from a global perspective in the 1990s. It is a comprehensive presentation of institutional backgrounds, markets, products, actors and locations, a non-technical primer for future bankers and financial analysts, and a keystone in the basic education of future executives.

This truly internationally focused book is as enjoyable as is it informative. All students and academics involved with economic geography as well as professionals in the banking and finance industries will find this text to be an indispensible book for their bookshelves.
