In Organizing from the Inside Out, author Julie Morgenstern used three main strategies to whip a living space or office into shape: "analyze, strategize, attack." Using the same system, Morgenstern now shows readers how to get rid of chaotic schedules in order to live more comfortable and productive lives. Morgenstern likens a cluttered schedule to a cluttered closet. For example, a closet is typically "crammed with more stuff than storage," and a schedule is typically "crammed with more tasks than time."

Those who fear "time management" because they worry about living uncreative or overly scheduled lives will find themselves reassured by Morgenstern's ability to customize her system. The most important thing readers must do, she emphasizes, is to create a time management system that fits one's personal style--whether it be spontaneous and easily distracted or highly regimented and efficient. "Just as everyone's living room looks different, reflecting the individual's or family's values and priorities, everyone's time management system will look different, reflecting what's important to him or her," she explains. Fortunately, readers can easily customize her excellent advice while learning how to create a personal time map, streamline routine tasks, conquer procrastination and chronic lateness, and manage all the inevitable crises and distractions of daily life. Speaking of procrastination, what better time than now to try this book out--ridding yourself of all that draining clutter so you can get on with living the life you want? --Gail Hudson

5 out of 5 stars Excellent; just a little repetative.......2007-10-19

I LOOOOVE this book. It so explains the psychology behind tardiness, mismanagement of time, etc. It definitely gives a great step-by-step guide on how to manage time. It also takes into consideration people's personalities and individual lifestyles. For instance, people who are afraid that a rigid "time map" might hinder their creativity and spontaneity...it gives us various methods to deal with the realities of our lives and accept our weaknesses (rather than continually pretending that they don't exist and continually failing!) and find ways around those weakness, and use our strengths to our advantage. The book shows how to reach our goals by using our time to our advantage. It can transform the person whose time is chaotic and imprisoned and turn them into the person whose life is orderly and free!

The only disadvantage to this book (very minor) is that the author starts repeating herself 2/3 of the way into the book. As I was typing notes throughout my reading, I started realizing that I was typing the same things over and over.

4 out of 5 stars Good time strategies for aquired brain injuries.......2007-10-18

I have an acquired brain injury from falling down some stairs. I find the strategies in this book to be very helpful indeed. I would recommend this book to anyone who needs to get a handle on their time.

4 out of 5 stars Worth Reading.......2007-07-04

I really loved this book. I got so much out of it, that I have started to read all her other books too. She is really different in her approach to time management and it really works for me. The book is very well written, easy to follow and is a book you can keep to use as a resource for many years to come.

4 out of 5 stars My Clients Love this Book.......2007-03-24

I just got this book because my business coaching clients often have issues with running a business, often by themselves, and finding enought time to have a life. Julie offers great, easy to implement strategies that help the really busy person get control. I love that she looks at the hidden reasons behind our time management difficulties and styles. I keep recommending it and will continue!

5 out of 5 stars Teens can organize themselves.......2007-07-23

After reading some of Morgenstern's books on organization for myself, I bought this book for my daughter. She was delighted with it and took it upon herself to redo her room. I think that she did a pretty good job. Her room has greatly improved and this book has given my daughter the confidence that she can keep her area and belongings neat.

5 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL book for teens!.......2007-02-09

Teenagers need to be taught practically how to manage all of their homework. Julie's book does just that. It makes sense, the methods are easy to apply, and it is great when parents and their kids can read the book together. I recently gave a talk to teenagers using the principles of the book and the kids were very receptive. Definitely recommended for any parents with kids of "homework" age!

5 out of 5 stars A great motivator.......2005-05-05

I bought this for my teenage daughter and could see a big improvement after she read it. This book contains information that will help provide the foundation for skills needed throughout her adult life. I only wish that I had found this for my oldest daughter who has since gone off to college. If it didn't have the word "teenager" in it I'd send her a copy.

4 out of 5 stars This book can really help you get organized............2005-03-20

Lately, many teenagers feel like they under the same crunch as their parents to get everything done (school, homework, friends, chores, jobs, etc.), and yet still want free time- and this book can really help you get your work done and still have a life, at the same time. The way that Julie Morgenstern writes this book is different than your typical organizing book- because it helps you to create an organizational system that caters to your personal needs, not someone else's. Julie states that since every teen as different hobbies, interests, activities, etc., their usage of time and the way their bedroom is organized will also be different.

Instead of giving you the same organizing system to use as everybody else, this book gives you a basic five-plan organizational system that you can apply to organizing your bedroom and managing your time better. It also features tons of helpful hints, real-life stories and anecdotes, and more to help you to get organized. Asides from being helpful, these stories and tips are also motivational and inspirational.

So, for all of those teens who have tried countless times to get organized but still find themselves in a mess, this book will definitely help you to get organized and start living your life better and more well-managed.

This is the book for you if you've ever had the urge to tell off your boss, quit your job, hurl your Palm Pilot into the trash, and move to a farm. Written by bestselling stress consultant and psychotherapist Dr. Richard Carlson Don't Sweat the Small Stuff, it advocates the cultivation of a personal mindfulness and "thought navigation" to foster a sense of mental calmness and increased creativity and productivity.

With sage tips reminiscent of those in Jon Kabat-Zinn's Wherever You Go, There You Are, Carlson recommends a "Psychology of Mind" approach that involves being fully present in each situation and not letting the attitudes of others ruin your day. This way, your thoughts become more organized--wiser, if you will--and you get more work done without even trying. This time management trick is what he says will improve your life--not a cell phone or an electronic scheduler or a personal assistant. Carlson's advice can be taken to heart, as he's used these techniques to improve his own life. While he was working on his Ph.D., he rose at 4 a.m. and "gulped down ten or fifteen cups of coffee" each day just to get all his work done, and would bristle if family emergencies took him away from his studying.

Not only does Carlson promise to help boost one's productivity, but he says that relationships and intimacy will improve as well. He maintains that disagreements--at home or at work--are less likely to blow up into full-fledged arguments if you're being calm and levelheaded. "A mind operating at the speed of life can see things as they really are," he writes. "Slowing down gives you needed perspective during times of transition and stress. When you operate at the speed of life and your child desires privacy, you'll probably remember that almost all teenagers go through phases of wanting space from their parents....Rather than take it personally, you'll be able to see the bigger picture. If your mind is moving too quickly, events as well as your own thoughts about events become much larger than they really are."

For anyone fed up with life's chaos, Slowing Down to the Speed of Life should prove to be an immensely helpful mental health manual. --Erica Jorgensen

4 out of 5 stars great book, missing clue.......2007-08-20

A very good book with THE solution to most stress- and bad life quality problems: get out of analytical thinking mode and in to free flowing mode. The book makes sense 100%. However, how DO you get into the free flowing mode? This is only arbitrarily described, even though it is the very essential thing! A great pity.

An easy to read book that I found to be very down to earth and true to life. Good for anyne who has lost focus on what life is all about.

The book came into my life at a perfect time. It has helped me liberate my mind to focus on the real important things in life. Before the book I was considering going on blood pressure medicine- NOT ANYMORE! Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Stop and smell the roses.......2006-09-21

In this fast pace world we live in we tend to forget to stop and smell the roses. We live our lives planning our next days activities without truly sitting back and gazing at awe of the world around us at the only moment we know. Despite our best efforts to manage our time we ultimately fail.

The book is about simplifying ones life. Live for the here and now and be happy. Enjoy the moment, change your thinking, reduce stress, better your relationships and work smarter.

We get caught up in the worldly things, isn't time to concentrate on what's most important. I highly recommend this book.

It's about time! Julie Morgenstern has written an organizing book that covers a new way of looking at the task of organizing effectively without labeling or blaming the person behind the lack of organization. Rather, she says, people who don't organize just never learned how to organize, through no fault of their own--after all, it's not a skill that's taught in school. That said, she gets down to work helping you figure out an organizing system that will really work for you, not a system based on cookie-cutter filing concepts or special storage units.

Morgenstern's "from the inside out" system begins by laying out the possible reasons for a failure of organization: technical errors (like having a complex organizing system that breaks down), external realities (like not enough space for your belongings), and psychological obstacles (like fear of failure--or success). Then, her Analyze and Strategize steps help create a plan of action based on your needs and goals, and the brief chapter called "Attack: Getting the Job Done" offers basic ideas for making space. The largest section of the book, "Applying What You've Learned," addresses the specifics of organizing workspaces, home offices, living spaces, and storage areas. Each section has a "How Long Will It Take?" box that gives a realistic time estimate, and Morgenstern's "Julie's No-Brainer Toss List" for each area gives the permission and encouragement that most of us have been waiting for to get rid of things we'll never use again. The section at the end, "Tackling Time and Technology," is worth its weight in DayTimers and PalmPilots. Whatever your organizing issues are, you're not a hopeless case, and you don't need special equipment--just a little understanding of the problem and a willingness to plan before diving in.

5 out of 5 stars Organizing from the Inside out -2nd ed........2007-09-23

This book is very helpful to get a home and life organized. I like the way it is separated into specific areas and the specific directions to get that area in order. The directions and suggestions are easy to understand and use. The second edition is larger and contains a section I really needed to use - that of organizing photographs.

5 out of 5 stars Very good Reading.......2007-09-15

I really enjoyed reading this book and usually this type of book can be a little dull. It was very motivating and she didn't just tell you to throw all your stuff out. She gave good advice on how to organize the things you have and want to keep. She also had a way of not sounding judgemental of people just because they had a problem of keeping everything.

    4 out of 5 stars Organized - not neat.......2007-08-14

One of the most important points in Organizing from the Inside Out is that being organized is not the same thing as being neat. If you want your house to look neat, you can shove everything under the bed and in the closets. Being organized means knowing where everything is and having it conveniently located to where you need it. Julie Morgenstern divides the process of getting organized into a few important steps:

    1. Sort. Before you start throwing things away, figure out what all ended up in that drawer or closet. Put it in piles and put labels on the piles. This will help you figure out how to make a home for everything and/or how to make sure it doesn't end up there again. If you just throw all the trash away, that closet will most likely collect trash again.
    2. Purge. Now you can throw away all that junk.
    3. Attack. This is the figure out where it's all going to go. Think where it will be most helpful and easiest to keep organized. If all your books end up by the sofa, don't put them away in the office upstairs. Put a basket or a bookshelf next to the sofa.
    4. Containerize. Measure everything, figure out what kind of containers would work best and then go buy them. Not before! Put nice labels on everything so the whole family knows what goes where.
    5. Equalize. Spend five minutes every day putting things back in their place.

She makes a good point that people that like to organize usually end up in one of two categories:

    * Those that like to purge. (This would be me. Learned from my mom.)
    * Those that like to containerize. I know lots of these - they like to buy containers and shelves and things. More gadgets to hold the junk says the purger.

Skip the chapter on technology. She is obviously not a heavy computer or gadget user.

4 out of 5 stars Love this book, but I'm surprised she doesn't stress purging stuff more.......2007-07-14

First off, let me say I loved this book, got a lot of ideas from it, and use it constantly as a reference. She is a great writer, and really explored some new concepts. Do I think it could have gone a little more in-depth? Yes. What surprised me is that while she did touch on the subject of getting rid of excess clutter, she really didn't push. People will have a lot less to organize if they lose such an emotional attachment to their stuff. Maybe she didn't want to take the chance on offending some of the more hard-core pack rats, and didn't want to use "tough love". But I personally felt that she could have added some more about overcoming the emotional attachment people have to things they no longer need or use. Other than that, this is top-notch, with great websites at the end of the book to help get you organized.

    5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Read.......2007-07-04

Who would have thought that looking at a kindergarten class room you could organize your whole life?! This book is great. I have read a few organizational books that have left no impression on me, and then I read this one. It is great - it does not tell you to throw out 80% of what you own and then organize the remaining 20%, it actually tells you how to organize everything you own. Not only that it looks into the deeper issues of what's stopping you getting organized in the first place, which then helps ensure that you will stay organized after all the hard work. The book can be read from cover to cover or you can skip to whatever section you think you need to work on first.

                Book Description

In the recent stock market collapse, confidence in the financial industry was shaken by numerous scandals. Beginning with Enron in 2001, scandals brought about the demise of prominent financial figures, damaged the reputation of premiere firms and destroyed the global accounting giant Arthur Andersen. Central to this crisis was the exploitation of conflicts of interest. Research analysts at investment banks were found to be distorting information at the behest of underwriting departments eager to promote new issues. Auditors appeared to sanction misleading accounting in order to gain business for the consulting side of their firms. Policy response in the United States was quick. Large fines were levied and regulators compelled the separation of financial security function, constraining financial conglomerates.

But are these new regulations and safeguards adequate protection? What costs do they impose on the industry? This fifth title in the ICMP/CEPR series of Geneva Reports on the World Economy examines the problem of conflicts of interest in the financial system. Conflicts of interest lead to a decrease in information that makes it harder for the system to provide savers wit the accurate, essential information that induces them to provide credit to borrowers. This study focuses on conflicts of interest that arise when a firm combines multiple lines of business, creating multiple interests. Conflicts between research and underwriting in investment banking and between auditing and consulting in accounting firms are investigated, as are the problems that arise from rating agencies providing consulting services and from universal banks combining commercial and investment banking.

Determining the appropriate remedy for a conflict is a challenge because the elimination of conflicts may also eliminate benefits from economies of scope. This study examines five generic remedies: market discipline, regulation for increased transparency, supervisory oversight, separation of financial activities by function, and socialization of the collection and distribution of information. The authors apply this framework to assess critically the Sarbanes-Oxley Act and the Global Settlement between American regulators and investment banks.
