5 out of 5 stars Should be a Classic.......2007-05-04

I read an earlier edition of this book years ago. It taught me how to recognize the stumbling blocks that litter my life and to logically develop my own plans to get over, around or through them successfully. I have applied the principles explained in the book many times over the years and they work every time. The book is easy to read, easy to understand, and easy to apply. If you read it and apply it, you will be glad you did. (When I say easy to apply, I mean easy to apply the logical methods taught in the book. Some of the changes that the logic led me to understand that I wanted to make have taken time effort to achieve.)

5 out of 5 stars Inspiration from Beginning to End!.......2000-05-02

I've had the opportunity to hear Henry Marsh speak and was very impressed. He is dynamnic, funny and his topics are relevant and important.

His book is just as good, maybe even better. I just loved the personal stories and how much he overcame to accomplish the things that matter to him.

This book has truly helped me be a better person.

Book Description

This revolutionary (and fascinating) book explains how we can postpone the aging of our brains and instead develop extraordinary brain longevity, with memory, concentration, energy, and learning ability even better than what we enjoy in our youth. The BRAIN LONGEVITY program is a four-step plan using modern complementary medicine, from Eastern and Western traditions, and including nutritional therapy, stress management, exercise therapy, and pharmacology, all designed to overcome "normal" brain aging. The program is designed to control a specific adrenal hormone, cortisol, which clinical testing has shown to be toxic to the brain and to become present in excessive levels as we age. Excess cortisol (which is often caused by stress as well as "normal" aging) diminishes the abilities of our brain cells and savages the body's production of hormones, including those that regulate our mood and our sex drive. Dr. Khalsa's holistic program reverses this toxicity and allows the brain to return to vibrancy and optimum mental ability. This is an easy-to-follow plan that can change the lives of millions.

3 out of 5 stars Food for Thought.......2007-03-15

Easy to read and full of useful information. Dr Dharma's enthusiasm is encouraging to anyone seeking further knowledge in this complex area. His holistic approach rings true to me and I very much appreciate his emphasis on working together with one's usual medical doctor as well as other complementary health professionals. His suggested dosages of nutritional supplements are much higher than what I have found in other literature - this being more 'food for thought'.

Khalsa is very knowledgeable, describing improvements that range from 100% transformation of the individual to modest improvement, which is worth any cost.
Scientifically sound and fascinating reading. I recommend it to everyone.

Refreshing to find an MD who is open to scientific knowledge not controled by the AMA and the Pharmaceuticals. The author does a good job of summerizing the efficacy of drugs available and safely used in Europe by the anti aging crowd for years but denied by the FDA. A Google search will take you to the sources to buy via the internet. Yoga, nutrition, exersice and vitimin/mineral supplement info and effect is artfully presented with a scientific explaination as to why it works. Clinical evidence is presented as necessary for credibility.

      Book Description

For 13 years and on four U.S. Olympic track teams, Henry Marsh competed in international track and field, setting a still-unbroken American record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. He finished fourth, however, in his run for glory in the 1976 Olympics. What he learned in his repeatedly thwarted bids for Olympic gold is that the highest degree of reward and satisfaction is to be found in the unswerving pursuit of personal excellence rather than in merely winning a competition.

During his days as an athlete, Marsh developed a plan for aerobic training and stress reduction, later teaching this regimen in seminars, but soon perceived a need for a more comprehensive plan, one that revolved around a larger commitment to complete physical and emotional well-being. Marsh sets forth that comprehensive plan in The Breakthrough Factor.

Using the Franklin Covey Reality Model -- a self-analysis tool based on Franklin Covey's many years of research of human behavior -- Marsh explains, with great energy and acuity, the power of principles in transforming our lives moment to moment. He tells you how to ensure incredible results in all spheres of life -- in relationships, financial circumstances, career decisions, physical health -- by making choices and arranging priorities around a fruitful set of values and beliefs.

      5 out of 5 stars Rad it.......2001-08-14

Back to the "data-driven...stuff". What I do show contempt for is the charlatans who repeat over and over the same silly lab tests and draw unfounded conclusions to support their theories on training. As Master Po has said before, "Man who study exercise-physiology and think he know running is like man who study price of produce and think he know how farm."

Could you if imagine engineers pursued their craft in the same manner of EP-Geeks? What the lab and the calculations say mean nothing to engineers. Engineers test and re-test everything in the field. Ever hear of a mechanical engineer telling a Formula I driver how to drive? A aeronautical engineer telling a pilot how to fly? Hell no. That's because they know their place in the grand scheme of things. Would you ever buy a Jim Beams Flying Formula book written by an engineer. Get outta here!

With that said, I've noticed that a lot of you guys read a lot of running books. That's fine. take em for what there worth. I have never heard of any of you reading any books on the psychology of running. What gives? Any of you ever read 'The Breakthrough Factor' by Henry Marsh? I didn't think so. Why not? Henry Marsh is by far the best American steeplechaser. Not by a little, by ThAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT much! Here's a guy with NO TALENT and NO WORK ETHIC and you don't want to know what he knows?

"Psssssst, over here kid, running's all upstairs."

You stare at the person you met an hour ago, but her name eludes you. You exit the shopping mall and have no idea where you parked your car. You can sing a song that was popular when you were a teenager, but you can't remember the book you read last week. If you're suffering from the effects of age-associated memory impairment (AAMI), you're in a crowd of millions. By age 79, memory of written material declines 43 percent, and memory of names one hour after introduction declines 74 percent. But according to The Memory Cure, phosphatidylserine (PS), a soy-based nutritional supplement, has been scientifically proven to help people recapture their slipping memories.

The Memory Cure tells everything you ever wanted to know about memory, making scientific information lucid and accessible. Memory expert Thomas Crook and health researcher-writer Brenda Adderly discuss the different types of memory, why we forget, and how PS works to invigorate memory. The authors present a six-step "memory cure" plan, plus a variety of memory-enhancing tips, techniques, and games. They discuss lifestyle choices that can affect memory, such as foods, supplements, exercise, and stress management. Get this book before you forget that you read this! --Joan Price

        2 out of 5 stars Generally a disappointment.......2000-09-09

Perhaps I had expected too much. My wife is confined to a nursing home with a rare parkinson type disease and I was hoping this book might help.

Instead of helping, the knowledge from books read earlier made me notice the many errors in this book - caused, I believe, by trying to make the book more readable. It also made it less accurate.

There are few miracles - PS is not one of them. If it were it would be in universal use.

A much better book, in my estimation, is "Mind Boosters" by Ray Sahelian, M.D.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent morsel of information.......1998-10-02

This book is packed with information about memory loss. I feel so much better now that I know how to reverse my memory loss.

5 out of 5 stars This book is easy to read, written in layman's terms........1998-09-25

This book is a good read. It lists many ways for people to improve their memory, and it discusses the impact that nutrition, health supplements and mental exercises have on our memory. The writers use language that is easily understood, even if you aren't a doctor.

                Book Description

The last quarter century has seen a broad, but qualified, belief in the efficacy of market organization slide into an unyielding dogma that the market, as unconstrained as possible, is the best way to govern virtually all economic activity. However, unrestricted markets can often lead to gross inequalities in access to important resources, the creation of monopolies, and other negative effects that require regulation or public subsidies to remedy. In "The Limits of Market Organization," editor Richard Nelson and a group of economic experts take a more sophisticated look at the public/private debate, noting where markets are useful, where they can be effective only if augmented by non-market mechanisms, and where they are simply inappropriate.

"The Limits of Market Organization" examines the appropriateness of markets in four areas where support for privatization varies widely: human services, public utilities, science and technology, and activities where market involvement is altogether inappropriate. Richard Murnane makes the case that a social interest in providing equal access to high quality education means that for school voucher plans to be effective, substantial government oversight is necessary. Federal involvement in a transcontinental railroad system was initially applauded, but recent financial troubles at Amtrak have prompted many to call for privatization of the rails. Yet contributor Elliot Sclar argues that public subsidies are the only way to maintain this vital part of the American transportation infrastructure. While market principles can promote competition and foster innovation, applying them in certain areas can actually stifle progress. Nelson argues that aggressive patenting has hindered scientific research by restricting access to tools and processes that could be used to generate new findings. He suggests that some kind of exception to patent law should be made for scientists who seek to build off of patented findings and then put their research results into the public domain. In other spheres, market organization is altogether unsuitable. Legal expert Richard Briffault looks at one such example—the democratic political process—and profiles the successes and failures of campaign finance reform in preventing parties from buying political influence.

This important volume shows that market organization has its virtues, but also its drawbacks. Just as regulation can be over-applied, so too can market principles. "The Limits of Market Organization" encourages readers to think more discriminately about the march toward privatization, and to remember the importance of public institutions.

                  Book Description

This book conducts a survey into the ways in which the word 'network' has been deployed in a wide range of literature. In particular, it offers a commentary on how the idea of networks has been used to illustrate contemporary forms of socio-economic organization (as with the idea of a 'network society' or a 'network state', for instance), broadly conceived to also include the political aspects of networks. The term 'network' has become a ubiquitous metaphor to describe too many aspects of contemporary life. In doing so, Thompson argues, the term has lost much of its analytical precision and has no clear conceptual underpinnings. The problem is that something claiming to explain everything ends up by explaining very little. The book brings some intellectual clarity to the discussion of networks by asking whether it is possible to construct a clearly demarcated idea of a network as a separable form of socio-economic coordination and governance mechanism with its own consistent logic. In doing this, the primary contrast is with hierarchies and markets as alternative and already well understood forms of socio-economic coordination each with their own distinctive logic. The author identifies two underlying programmatic issues: the question of whether there can be a particular logic to the network form of organization, and whether there are any limits to networks. He makes the argument that if networks are to mean anything then they must not apply to everything, so this raises an obvious limit to their embrace. The questions thus become where and how to draw these limits. These are reviewed in the light of the concrete organizational forms that networks have taken in the contemporary period.
