Wonderful book.......2007-03-21
This novel captures the ideas of the book THE PROFIT ZONE by the same author. I made it a required book for my MBA class on Pricing.
Insightful and Hilarious.......2006-10-15
This is a unique and hilarious book on 23 models that the author, Adrian Slywortzky, presents for improving the profitability of a company. The author methodically presents an insightful story in each chapter enabling the reader to gain an appreciation of the 23 models through parables and hilarious stories.
The author did a good job of transforming a rather dry subject into something interesting which both the veteran in accounting and the novice will find enjoyable and enlightening. The reader is made to reflect and think about their business which makes the book unique and useful.
As soon as I got the book, I swallowed it in three days and I have to admit that it was extremely tasty and satisfying. This is a useful book for all people running businesses and those intending to do so.
Hemmingway he is not.......2006-06-17
Powerful but very weak in execution...
Very nice ideas. Very well researched topic. However, terrible execution.
Clearly Mr. Adrian Slywotzky tried to combine his business knowledge with his aspirations at becoming a novel writer. The result? A drama business book.
It is presented as a dialog between two people - a risky move but not necessarily wrong by definition. A format like that (dialogue) requires great clarity. Unfortunately, Adrian Slywotzky, thinks he can add a little drama to an otherwise thrill-less business subject.... And on he goes... Throughout the book there are frequent attempts of Mr. Slywotzky at "juicing it up" a little. Frequent and unnecessary uh-ah is added. Every third line you can hear something of this sort: `his heart pounded mercilessly as he listened....' Or `his mind explored the subject like Columbus explored America'... These are not quotes, but you can get the idea. All of this made the original and well thought-out ideas in this book convoluted and more often than not annoying. The listening is painful... painful... painful... Dear Mr. Adrian Slywotzky, why don't you split the book into two separate sections entitled: "Art of Profitability" and the other "Amazing Adventures of... whoever." This way the presentation can be pain-less, clear, less annoying, and well... shorter.
Shows how a business makes a profit.......2006-06-06
I was referred to this awesome book by another fellow entrepreneur. I am extremely glad that I was too! The Art of Profitability is all about "profit models". What is a profit model? A profit model is made up of the core parts of a business system that have a direct influence on how the profit happens for a business. Basically the key factors for how a business turns a profit.
What if there was a book that defined and explored several profit models that have a track record of success and gave you real world examples of where they work? This means, from now on, instead of trying to magically dream up the best way for how the profit should happen in your business ventures, you have several existing patterns to use as a guide.
Let me give you a quick example of just one of the profit models described in the book...This one is called the "Pyramid" profit model. The Pyramid profit model is where a business sells multiple products/services at different price points, targeted to a different type of buyer. An example of this in the real world would be Mercedes automobiles. They have different classes of cars targeted to different groups of buyers. Sometimes customers buy into the brand at one price point and over time move up the pyramid and buy at higher price points. Some Pyramid profit models implement a "Firewall" product/service. This is where the lowest item on the pyramid is sold cheaply and efficiently in order to maintain market share and draw people into the brand.
This book is very profound and useful. The common bottom line in business is profit. How profit happens should really be one of the most intense studies of every entrepreneur. Start with reading The Art of Profitability right away!

Don't waste your money.......2007-04-18
This was a promotional piece for Stora Enso paper. I'm a graphic artist so I have billions of these things laying around - I suppose the reps at shows I attended were more than happy to dump them as these little buggers are heavy. There are no words save the end credits and exactly four, one-sided pages with little quippy questions regarding annual reports.
On the art end - if you've fooled yourself into thinking there's more to post mod commercial art than there really is - you will find this book delightful. I can only wish for the day my artistic clout will land me a job as simple and quick to pull off as this one.
For those who appreciate a serious exertion by the artist and/or are seeking materials within the paper company promotional books arena, I would recommend looking for Potlatch Design Series - American Design Century.
I love this book.......2006-12-05
I've had this book for years and I still notice new images and details. In fact, every time I pick up this book I have a new experience with it. It's great as a flip book and its great to slowly go through and look at images. You can have a linear experience with it if that is what you want or you can just drop in anywhere which is what I tend to do. The small size of the pages combined with the formidable thickness of the book make a little unwieldy, which forces a kind of active involvement with it. I tend to like art that shows more than it tells and this book fits that description.
Don't Waste Your Money.......2005-01-12
I ordered this book thinking I was going to actually get some quality information concerning annual reports. Cahan & Associates are well-known for producing quality annual reports and I had assumed that this book would be a worthwhile read. Instead of being a read of any sort, it's a bit of visual fluff; a miniature format book filled with a lot of silly pictures and a word or two here and there.
544 pages of self-indulgence by Stora Enso paper company designed by Cahan & Associates. Just a sales tool for Stora Enso's coated paper stock.
Amazing-insightful.......2001-11-08
I found the book to be amazing from a design perspective and enjoy having it on my coffee table for all to see.

Book Description
It seems like these days, whenever you look at a newsstand, at least one major business magazine has a cover story about a wildly successful entrepreneur in his or her 20s or 30s. That's not surprising when one considers that one out of every five small-business owners in America is under 35, and that more young people are starting businesses than ever before. Right now, in college dorm rooms and their parents' garages, the next generation of Sam Waltons, Bill Gateses, and Michael Dells are hard at work.
"If you are ever going to take risks in exploring your career options, this is the absolute best time to do it," says 26-year-old entrepreneurial expert Jennifer Kushell. "Why wait until you have a semi-stable corporate job and major financial obligations to discover that you hate your career and need to make a big change?"
Kushell is the ideal mentor for young people thinking about taking the plunge. Her very successful Young Entrepreneurs Network educates teens and twentysomethings in 40 countries about forming their own companies. A born entrepreneur -- her father and aunt are leading experts on franchising and trademark licensing, respectively -- Kushell presided over her own company's growth while attending college full-time. Her book draws on her invaluable hands-on experience: "It's not so much a how-to-start-a-business book as it is a how-to-cope-with-life-while-starting-and-succeeding-in-your-own-business book," the author says. "All I can say is that this is the real deal, the real story."
With wit, candor and exuberance for her subject, Kushell gives practical and personal insight from a young entrepreneur's point of view to help new business owners get through their first few years. The book "also teaches you tricks of the trade that you can rely on to compete successfully in a business world with people twice your age and companies God-knows-how-many-times-as big," she adds.
The Young Entrepreneur's Edge addresses key topics such as trying to obtain capital and writing a business plan, which, the author says, are among the biggest obstacles for young entrepreneurs. But the book also tackles critical areas that other business books rarely address: how to get older people to take you seriously; how not to starve when you're broke; how to win your family's approval; how to get out and meet important people; how not to get carded when entertaining clients; and other unique situations faced by young business people.
Praise for The Young Entrepreneur's Edge
"Fresh college graduates frustrated by the job search should pick up a copy of [this book]."
--Los Angeles Times
"Can help both job-seekers and job-holders rethink their idea of gainful employment."
--Mademoiselle
"Entertaining, fast-reading, and immensely sensible. Kushell is a human dynamo."
--Sacramento Bee
"Every young entrepreneur needs good ideas, and this book is full of them."
--Fred Deluca, founder and president of Subway® Restaurants
"It is a must-read for my students."
--Kathleen R. Allen, Ph.D., The Entrepreneur Program, University of Southern California
Customer Reviews:
What book did the other reviewers read?.......2003-07-08
I'm very disappointed with this book. Very vague and broad examples and not a lot of the nuts and bolts of success. Jennifer Kushell is the self crowned princess of the young entrepreneurial spirit. She claims to have launched successfull business ventures but never elaborates anywhere in her books or websites and instead offers page after page of fluff and filler on how to get ahead. After wasting my time with this book and two of her other books, I'd be skeptical of allowing her to run a lemonade stand. Please save your time and money. There are many better choices by PROVEN success stories. Multiple streams of Income by Robert Allen and How to Buy a Business: Entrepreneurship Through Acquisition by Richard A. Joseph are two of many that are a much better read for your time and money
Good Introduction to Running A Business.......2003-06-23
If you've ever wondered what running your own business would be like you really only have two choices: look towards the sky and daydream or give it a shot. If you choose the later, Kushell's The Young Entrepreneur's Edge can help you along that path.
The book is basically a "how to" for starting a business. It presents and answers all of the questions that you might really need to know the answer to, but felt too stupid to ask. It also touches on many things that a first-time entrepreneur may be unaware of or forget (like IRS withholding, etc.).
The book is primarily for someone planning to start a business for the first time and will offer little advice to the seasoned business-owner. Of value, though, especially to younger readers (of all levels of business experience) are the sections on dealing with perception of youth in a business context which may get a more thorough treatment here than in any other manuscript. Entrepreneurs of all ages and experience-levels will also enjoy the start-up-stories that pepper the book.
The books one real lack, however, may be in the accuracy department. For example, Kushell gets the IRS 1099 and W2 form confused, which may seem like a simple mistake but could inadvertently subject a business to a variety of liability (W2 employees are the traditional salaried/wage employees where the 1099 form is used for reporting income for independent contractors - [website] has extensive information on tax forms). The book, thus, is a good overview and may alert you to things that need to be looked into further, but additional research will be required to verify and understand each topic.
Overall, the book is a must-read for anyone under 30 starting a "real" business for the first time. For others, it may serve as a refresher or provide an amusing read, but will be of limited usefulness.
Some Great Advice About Starting Your Own Business.......2003-04-16
The Young Entrepreneur's Edge is not so much a how-to book on starting your own business, but is really a "how-to-cope-with-life-while-starting-and-succeeding-in-your-own-business-book." I have read many books on starting your own business and this book has some very unique advice because it is geared towards younger entrepreneurs. Jennifer Kushell offers some practical advice about selecting the right business for you, writing a business plan, getting funded, etc. But what sets the book apart are its sections on not having any credit or not having good credit, using interns instead of full time employees, how to get mentors and advisors, how to present a professional image despite of your youthful looking appearance, dealing with family and friends who don't support your decision, how not to starve, etc. The only complaint that I had about the book was that some sections were not very complete on their advice. It is true that there are lots of other books out there on subjects such as marketing and business plans and so on, but if the author was just going to recommend that we look elsewhere, why did she include a chapter on that topic in the book in the first place? Some of the information is a little dated, but not too bad. I also would have like to have seen more resources to go to in the back of the book as to where to go to get that information that she doesn't cover in the book. Regardless, if you are a twenty-something or younger entrepreneur, there are some really helpful hints to be found in this book and it is well worth your time to read for Jennifer Kushell's upbeat attitude and encouragement. She is absolutely right in that there is no better time for young entrepreneurs to go into business then now, when we have little or nothing to lose.
To General.......2000-11-03
I dont really think that this is a good book. I didnt know anything more after reading this book then I knew before reading this book. I found the most valuable information she provided was telling about how she saved money using interns, yet this was something that I already knew also.
If you are thinking about becomming an entrepreneur..........2000-08-02
If you are thinking about it, this book will ask you the right set of questions that will let you decide whether you are or should be an entrepreneur.
