Same old same old...and targeted at women..........2004-04-19
As a male introvert trying to improve my networking skills, I found this book very disappointing. There is only one, fairly unhelpful, chapter about men near the end of the book.
This book pushed MBTI and it showed some case studies of where introverted women have failed, but it really didn't offer anything on networking that a google search wouldn't turn up.
Waste of time and money.......2003-01-15
This is the only book I have ever returned to Amazon. Take it from an INTJ -- it is totally devoid of useful, substantive suggestions on the claimed subject. It is the same old basic networking suggestions rehashed -- nominally adapted for introverts but as far as I could tell, not in any useful way. Its primary purpose seems to be as a promotional piece for the author's seminars, but given the quality of the book I doubt it will stir up much interest.
For a better read on the subject, try Thomas Murphy's book on selling for introverts or one of the many books on NLP.
What a waste of time.......2003-01-05
Thank god that I only borrowed this book, and didn't have to actually buy the thing. There were a few quizzes, but it was mostly stories and comments on how networking for introverts will be addressed in the book. I made it three-quarters of the way through before I finally gave up. There was no meat to the book. I have gotten more out of magazine articles.
Hey, I'm not weird!.......2002-12-04
Well, not for being an introvert, anyway... Like Balzano, I'm an officially tested, rather scarce commodity known as an INTP (1% of the population). I've had a lot of problem fitting into the wheeling-dealing crazy world of the extrovert, and networking is something I've looked on with absolute horror, almost like a deer caught in headlights. I'd rather be shot than experience the joy of a company get-together, and I'd far rather clean the toilet and scrub the bathtub than go out with the coworkers for a Friday evening drink.
This book does have some great hints for trying to gradually work your way into the wide world of small-talk, business connections, parties, public speaking, etc. It also pinpointed several problems I'd had over the years with a few of my more extroverted bosses.
It's not a very concrete book, but the hints do come in handy, even if going into a room filled with people fills me with as much joy as a trip to a proctologist. And it is unique, addressing networking from a perspective that only a fellow introvert would think of. Many of the other networking books I've read haven't even attempted to consider the special concerns that an introvert has, and that alone makes it well worth the cover price.
It's very reassuring to know that you're not alone!
Some Good Exercises But A Little Loss Of Focus.......2001-12-20
Why Should Extroverts Make All The Money certainly has its merits. The exercises specifically the one describing problematic bosses are quite helpful. Balzano's basic analysis of introverts as the thinkers behind the organization is pretty accurate. The basic solution to getting introverts to open up is to discover your passion and go about it full blast.
Balzano should discuss more how introverts can overcome their fear of approaching others. Merely comparing it to a less desireable situation does not stand alone as the answer.
Also Balzano needs to realize that there are many people who are part extrovert and part introvert. On the 30 question test to discover if you are an introvert, I answered about 12 as an introvert. So what does that make me? More description is need there.
The analysis on the different types of extroverts and introverts are basically good. However, there are people who do fall in between these categories. A little more detail would ahve been nice.
At times the book loses focus on whether it wants to analyze introverts networking practices or just the general human nature. Each person has their own unique ways and Balzano does pidgeon hole the situation a bit too much. None the less, there are some good ideas.

Customer Reviews:
A comparatively good read at a page a minute........2007-01-16
This is an admirable explication of the interactive affects of standards, regulation, technology, service, and economics on the surprisingly convolved evolution of Wi-Fi. The authors effectively preserve these five themes throughout. Thus the reader should be able to recognize concepts of interest, and bypass the minutiae. What IT person, or armchair technocrat hasn't meditated about why a technology such as Wi-Fi survived the onslaught of ingenious alternatives. Consider it the story of Wi-Fi, as it has lived and breathed to date. I dare say that this "history of Wi-Fi" would give excellent service in business schools as a study of how successful electronic technologies actually survive many subtle interdisciplinary trials. This is a comparatively good read - advanced thinkers in IT or telecommunications could allocate a minute a page with entirely adequate comprehension.
Good context for decsion makers.......2002-12-13
This book is good for people condsidering WLAN for their business or using WLAN technology in their products. Some tech details, but if you don't know what spread spectrum is, why its important to WLANs and why security is such a problem - topics such as that - then this book is for you. It's not a tech bits/bytes programming manual, but if you want that - you can download the spec from IEEE free. If you want a good view of where the technology fits with other wireless data technologies, why its so popular and what areas are problems, this book gets you going.
Too much fluff.......2002-11-28
This book contains too much fluff. The title is somewhat misleading in my opinion. It has almost 300 pages but only about 150-170 of those pages actually deal with 802.11. Even of those pages, a considerable amount of space is devoted to covering the other 802.11 working groups leaving me disappointed in the 802.11b coverage. The rest of the book covers other wireless networking technologies (such as hiperlan, homeRF and countless others that most of us will never encounter). It also spends way too many pages on vague, 1-2 paragraph descriptions of how business x has implemented a 802.11 network to enhance productivity. And finally, the last 61 pages (aka appendix A), is a word-for-word reprint of the FCC regulations covering unlicensed emissions. These regulations apply to, but are not specific to, 802.11 and are surely available for free on the internet if you really have to have them. I'm still looking for a good WiFi book.
Too simple without insight.......2002-10-04
This book severs as an introductory book. If you are an engineer with backgound on ethernet, you can skip this. This book is supposed for non-technical people, like marketing. Go for 802.11 wireless network if you want to know more.
Taking the mystery out of wireless........2002-09-14
The newest technology for networking is wireless and the protocol that covers this is 802.11. In just over 280 pages I found a wealth of information that not only simplifies the concepts but also helped me understand how this new technology will enhance networking as we know it.
What the authors do in this book, which I haven't seen in any others is breakdown the protocol first, explaining how the different levels of 802.11, BlueTooth and 3G work. This includes 802.11, 11A, 11B and 11G, each having a specific purpose and function.
I found that not only is there different types of protocols but also hardware and carriers for wireless LANs as well, the book does a good job of distinguishing each from the other. The authors also cover the process of implementation and planning which makes this a fairly well rounded manual.
One thing I like most about the book was the coverage of the applications you can use and what groups are already using the technology. While this book isn't written to any certification per say, this book will be a handy reference for the CWNA exam and beyond

Voice-recognition systems can be a real help to people who have to generate a lot of text and can't--or don't want to--type. The systems, though dramatically improved, still require a bit of babying to yield the best results. In Talk to Your Computer: Speech Recognition Made Easy, Dan Newman explores voice-recognition technology in generic terms (i.e., without getting very far into the details of specific software packages).
He shows how to set up a workstation for voice work, how to adjust your voice for the most accurate recognition, and how to re-engineer business procedures so that they benefit most from voice-recognition software. Readers might enjoy the brief case studies of people who benefited from being able to speak to their computers. There's a nice buyer's guide to software and microphones, but the entries on the software packages are insufficient for real decision-making.
This is a good book, and voice-recognition technology is sufficiently novel that Newman manages to avoid sounding boring even when he opines about how to sit at a desk. Still, Talk to Your Computer would be far better if it more fully addressed the relative merits of the top voice-recognition packages and gave some information on their configuration options--perhaps a chapter each for the various versions of IBM ViaVoice, Dragon NaturallySpeaking, Philips FreeSpeech, and L&H Voice Xpress. --David Wall
Topics covered: Technologies that make it possible for you to speak into a microphone and have your words correctly rendered as text by a computer. Without making much mention of specific voice-recognition software packages, the author tells how to set up your computing environment for maximum accuracy, personal comfort, and work efficiency.
Book Description
Talk to Your Computer shows how to make speech software work quickly and accurately. If you use IBM, L&H, Dragon, or Philips speech software, that book will save you hours of frustration and help you work in the most efficient way possible. The book describes how to tune up your computer for best accuracy, how to troubleshoot problems with your software, and how to matain an efficient work flow when dictating. A chapter on healthy computing guides you through setting up your workstation properly for speech and reveals the secrets of maintaining good vocal health. The book includes a comprehensive buyers guide with in-depth product reviews and expert recommendations, profiles of speech recognition users, and detailed instructions on how to talk to your computer so that it understands you best. "Newman's expert advice is clear and to-the-point. Speech software can dramatically boost your writing speed." --Robert Cowart, author of Mastering Windows 98 and Windows NT Unleashed "I had used NaturallySpeaking for more than a year before finding this book. I wish I'd found it sooner! Any one of the tips on improving accuracy easily justifies the cover price." --Harris Lilienfeld, M.D., Delaware Valley Pediatric Associates
Customer Reviews:
Still timely, complete, and helpful.......2002-04-26
I completely agree with the other review - this book covers an amazing scope of material related to voice dictation software and hardware. The author draws on a vast amount of real-world experience implementing voice recognition software. And the book provides accurate and insightful guidance on what path to take if you try to set up voice recognition software yourself. The range of advice runs from informed, candid and critical evaluation of the major software programs, to what kind of wear-and-tear to expect on your vocal chords as you begin to replace typing with voice dictation! Nobody should evaluate a move to voice recognition technology, or purchase software or hardware without this book. While the book has been in print a couple years, I found it quite timely - with still valid characterizations of the various software options available. A "must" for the bookshelf of every office and organization. And certainly a critical resource for those responsible for implementing voice recognition software.
Essential reading for any potential user.......1999-12-12
I'm technologically experienced yet I have hesitated to try to set up voice recognition, even though a complimentary copy of VR software sits in my drawer. That's over. So far, this book has answered every question I have and has given me confidence that this technology can do what I want. I have three favorite "aspects" of the book --- 1) it is a stunningly clear presentation of the material. The language is jargon-free and brief, and best of all the book is laid out in in question-and-answer format, which works perfectly for this kind of material. 2) The book is populated with quotes from and descriptions of the experiences of real users, which make the advice come to life. 3) The breadth of the book is surprisingly broad, ranging from "should you / how to" topics (of course) to things I didn't expect, such as how to change the order of various tasks to take advantage of the technology, and how to continually improve the performance of the package (your system plus your own speech) over time. There's not much fluff.
So, I'm very impressed. This kind of book, executed this well, should be available for far more products than just VR.

Book Description
Last year, some 70 million wirelessly enabled computers, printers, fax machines, PDAs, and related devices were sold in the U.S. Now, with the right guidance, home and office users can configure these diverse devices into efficient information networks. Wireless Networking Made Easy gives readers an overview of personal, local, and wide area networks, helping them determine which one is right for them, and taking them step-by-step on how to set it up themselves, whether for their home or business.
Written in a nontechnical style and featuring several case histories, the book shows how to set up, manage, and administer a wireless network. In addition to giving readers a clear guide to getting started, the book goes on to cover more advanced areas, including performance-monitoring methods, common problems and solutions, and knowing when to upgrade. The book includes an appendix of wireless network online resources, as well as a special section on wireless broadband access. It is the simple key for anyone seeking to understand the wireless world -- and make themselves a part of it.
Customer Reviews:
Not very informative.......2007-08-03
I bought this book to learn more about how to set up a wireless link from my office (no high speed data available) to my home (1.7 miles away, line of sight, with FIOS internet). The book says you can do this, and it's a good thing to do. No really useful advice or diagrams, discussions of antennae, regulations on amplification, extra encryption needed, etc.
The book was a little more useful than telling a new poker player, "You gotta know when to hold 'em."

Mysteries of Telecommunication Revealed.......2000-10-15
Those for whom the "acronym"ous world of telecommunications is foreign territory will find Karen Patten's book invaluable. As a novice in the study of telecommunications I found her definitions and explanations to be thorough yet clear and easily understood. This is a high achievement given the technical complexities of the industry and the ongoing confusion which has plagued the industry since its deregulation in 1996. Her chapter on the changes in the telecommunication industry should be required reading for every consumer who struggles to decipher the myriad charges which appear on their monthly telephone bill!
An excellent, informative guide........2000-07-04
Organizations need to adopt networking technology in order to function properly, and Data Networking Made Easy goes beyond most books about LANS to cover connecting across public networks and using a variety of networking technologies. An excellent guide for any interested in learning all the options in a networking environment.

Information Security: Where do I Start? What do I need?.......2000-07-12
Think developing or updating security policies is a nightmare? Rather have root canal without the anesthetic? Purchase this book and you will be on a quick and painless path to getting meaningful security policies in place. The book is well organized making it a breeze to find what your looking for. Each policy also includes an excellent commentary that describes the policy's intent. Many of the policies are technology neutral making it easy to develop consistent and uniform policies across all computing platforms. It's well worth the investment.
A wonderful work saver.......2000-03-28
I agree with all the other reviews that say that this book has everything you could possibly want for writing a Security Policy for your company. The price includes a single-company license for copying the copyrighted text into your security policy. Consultants will need to purchase a new license for each company they develop a policy for.
As the "Version 7" implies, this is a work in progress. As such, I expected to see a "Reader's Comment Form" at the back so the reader could notify the author of subjects he might add in the next version or of errors or omissions detected. There is no such form. I also found that I received only canned or sluggish sales responses from the email address listed on the back cover. I was surprised to find such a poorly-managed business associated with such an excellent book.
Outstanding.......1998-08-24
Point Blank: If you have to deliver a security policy by a specified date, use this book. Quite simply, you will spend more time with your family and less time working. The book helps remove the pressure to perform.

Book Description
The impact of capital markets on every aspect of business and daily life at the dawn of the 21st century--and how those markets have evolved since antiquity--is explored in this sumptuously illustrated volume.
The dynamism of today's international economy and the fascinating history of world markets come together in this unprecedented volume. With its accessible text and exciting visuals, In the Market combines historical understanding and contemporary savvy.
A chronological narrative explains the origins of market economies in the ancient world, tracing the evolution of markets from the Greek agora and medieval fairs to the first joint stock companies, and detailing the rise of today's commodity and financial markets. Accompanying this text are seventeen highly visual features; each is devoted to a type of market transaction, from "cash on the barrelhead" to the most sophisticated speculation in derivatives. These features take the reader from the world of bartering to those of the commodity trader, government finance, and business investments in industries ranging from transportation to entertainment, aerospace, and the Internet. The illustrations emphasize the financial market's practical and profound effects on businesses' and workers' production of goods and services. Also included are one hundred biographies of men and women who have reshaped the international marketplace, from John Jacob Astor to Victoria Claflin Woodhall, in addition to an illustrated timeline of financial history from 2000 B.C. to 2001 A.D.
Other Details:
325 illustrations, 250 in full color. 352 pages. 10 x 12" trim size. Published in 2001.

Concise but a Big Book.......2005-08-23
This book covers the market in the broadest, widest sense. The authors have collected illustrations on every conceivable market from camel caravans crossing the Sahara to the latest scenes on Wall Street. You don't think of a coffee table picture book as having the world's financial markets as a suitable subject, but that's what this is.
The book goes back a few thousand years and covers the basic development of trade that began in the fertile cresent. Major epochs since then are given chapters. These include the depression, the wars, OPEC and so on.
As big as the book is, 350 pages, 10 x 12 inches and six pounds in weight, I'm reluctant to use the term 'concise history.' But's that's really what it is. The book, both because of its illustrations and it writing is very good, it's enjoyable reading, much better than what you would expect to find in the usual coffee table book.
