This text provides the reader with a general and widely-applicable problem solving strategy for use in quality improvement. It covers a variety of statistical and "non-statistical" problem-solving tools, and discusses techniques that are useful when problems are solved by groups or teams of people. It also shows how the success of problem solving is influenced by the style of management and the type of management-employee interaction.

This texts assumes little mathematics and no statistical training. It is intended to teach engineering students and managers the basic tools and strategies for successful quality control and management. The authors are statisticians, so the importance of probability and statistics is emphasized and taught from first principles. Yet the first five Chapters (Section 1 of the book), does not deal with statistics at all! The authors describe quality problems and strategies for solving problems. This involves sketching the importance of data and data analysis and mentioning the various statistical tools in the context of the roles they play. Chapter 2 deals with ways of detecting quality porblems and includes flowcharting processes, the use of scorecards and Pareto diagrams. Chapter 3 deals with problem solving techniques and cause-and-effect diagrams. Chapter 4 deals with group problem solving including quality circles and the delphi technique for reaching a consensus. Section 1 concludes with the use of a rewards system to facilitate employee involvement in quality improvement.
In Section 2 basic statistical concepts are introduced as they are needed. Chapter 6 deals with ways to measure productivity and collect data. Chapter 7 covers graphical displays, descriptive statistics and probability distributions and concludes with an enumeration of Ishikawa's seven basic tools. Formal probability is introduced in Chapter 8, survey sampling in Chapter 9, statistical inference under simple random sampling in Chapter 10, acceptance sampling in Chapter 11, statistical process control in Chapter 12, process capability indices in Chapter 13 (a good introductory treatment). Section 2 is Chapters 6-11 covering the tools for data analysis. Chapters 12 and 13 are separated as Section 3 covering process stabilization and predictability. Several real projects are described at the end of Section 3. Section 4 is on design of experiments covering Chapters 14 -16. Chapters 14 and 15 deal with classical statistical designs while Chapter 16 deals with Taguchi designs that are useful for determining robust conditions and process improvement. Many useful applications are given to illustrate the techniques. Other useful statistical methods in quality control are relegated to Chapter 17. This includes regression analysis, response surface methods and model selection procedures.

It provides the link between resources, product-market positions and profits¿how resources and product-market positions are translated into profits. (Existing strategy texts demonstrate correlation between resources or product-market positions and profits, not their translation into profits). Additionally, it explores the relationship between business models and corporate social responsibility as well as the international component to business models. It offers a definition of business models that is deeply rooted in the resource-based and product-market theories of strategy.

The book has an overarching attitude to strategy. This book is the meeting point of many well known and intensively taught concepts in a way that make perfect sense.
This is one of few publications dealing directly with the term and concepts of the term business-Model.
The book is a great source for my Master Thesis.
Capstone.......2003-09-15
I read this book recently, just after my first year in business school. It provided a tremendous capstone to all of the major core fields here and integrates them naturally in the context of how a business should be looked at. There is a great deal of information compressed into these chapters, with a wide review of current thinking.
I will unquestionably value this as a reference to remind me of the powerful lessons learned at b-school......

I used this text in my honors sociology course last semester at Princeton. It was absolutely riveting. I found it to be, not only interesting, but very informative. The more I delved into this book, the more I learned about the behavior of my peers. More importantly, I learned about myself. I would definitely recommend this book for college curriculum, or even for personal reading. A must read.

Toward a 'language' for reading the organization........2000-06-08
This is a valiant attempt to systematise a difficult area of assessment of organisations. Ken Wilber in 'A Short History of Everything' argues that every entity has an external aspect or 'surface' and an internal aspect or 'depths'. He says 'surfaces can be seen [and therefore measured], but depths [i.e. interior aspects] must be interpreted'. He goes on to say that our society's obsession with measurement results either in depths being ignored, or in inappropriate attempts to devise measures, typically resulting in a distorted perception of the interior aspects.
Garden has made a valuable attempt to provide a language for interpretation that can be shared and that captures within a simple framework ways of 'reading' types of organisation and their relationships with others (suppliers, customers etc). Her aim is explained in the Introduction. In summary, it is to build tools with which to 'read' the organization, using perceptual skills ("and, by this, I mean emotional perception more than intuition.", writes Garden). "It is ... making use of your own perception, applying a framework based on psychology to business decisions and strategy as well as emotion, and understanding the way seemingly disparate aspects of the organization are subtly connected together - that define what is distinctive about this book. It attempts to make a contribution that is additional to our present interpretive framework and tools."
Tools that support methodical use of our 'innate talents' for observation and holistic understanding will be profoundly useful. The author claims that her methodology works for her and that she has been able to transfer her skills to others. The key question is how well these same skills can be transferred by means of a book alone.
Valuable though the contents of the book are, I do not think it has been wholly successful in achieving that very difficult goal - which is not to say that it has failed. It provides a platform on which to build.
If you are concerned with organisational change, the book is well worth examination. You may find its prescriptions useful or you may not, but it certainly stimulates reflection about how we understand and convey to each other the rather intangible forces that are so important to the success or failure of organisations.

Beginners Take Care.......2000-10-11
Gill Hale has done a nice job of introducing Feng Shui concepts, but I feel this book is perilously lacking in depth. OK for those who want to dabble because it's trendy, but not much else. Photos are good; basic design advice is sound. BUT as a Feng Shui landscape design consultant with several years experience I have grave reservations about anyone relying on this book for serious Feng Shui. Hale's grasp of many FS concepts seems superficial at best, and possibly harmful if not well understood when applied. For serious readers I strongly suggest instead Lillian Too's 'Complete Illustrated Guide to Feng Shui for Gardens', very readable, lots of good photos & diagrams.

I have had a necklace for years with the I Ching symbols, but I never knew their meanings. In this 228 page beautiful book, feng shui is explained beautifully and simply. For the first time I understand the elements and their relationship with energy, astrology and healing. Simply the best book I have read for novices like me who have admired the tranquillity and peace of oriental gardens but were unable to capture the techniques required to plan such a simple yet complex space.

I Cannot Recommend This Book.......2003-03-06
I had heard a great deal about Feng Shui and was anxious to learn about it. A "hoping to be helpful" friend who knew even less than I did gifted me with this book. I waded through it and found this author to be so confusing and disorderly I nearly tore my hair out and darn near gave up on Feng Shui right here. I found it to be far too vague and disorganized and too much jumping back and forth between chapters required to get a complete, clear picture, which I never achieved with this book. This is not, in my opinion a good book for a beginner, it is too muddled and has too much "guess work" for the novice. I feel fortunate to have found other authors with a clearer view and a better ability to explain the inner workings of Feng Shui. I have been practicing Feng Shui for two years now and have doubled my income in my legal career, calmed and better organized my life, and found time to become the artist I dreamed of being. Feng Shui does work, but I didn't get the know-how from this author. Only the desire to find a better author.

This book is an excellent starter book for someone wanting to learn about Feng Shui. The author goes in depth describing the sources of the Feng Shui philosophy but also makes the reading easy to understand. The book is organized by rooms, which makes the book an excellent reference item for quick fixes.

The most important rule in Feng Shui is directions. They need to be accurate by using a compass. Your Kua Number or (Ki Number) gives you your personal direction which then designates where the proper placement of colors, objects and Feng Shui enhancers are placed in your surroundings. I think most people do not understand that Feng Shui can be detrimental if not applied properly. Never in a home is a missing corner or extension to a building beneficial.

I have read and tried the cures from some other books on feng shui, but none has even come close with the effectiveness of this method. The changes I have made in my home have not only felt so good and right, but the desired effects have been practically immediate as well as lasting. Even my husband, who didn't really know what I was up to, had the same experience. This is a delightful book that one can delve into quickly or ponder over, as one wishes. I am really grateful to have come across it and would recommend it to everyone.

Not another cookie cutter feng shui book!.......2002-03-26
I've recently started reading about feng shui and chinese astrology and have read about 8 books so far. This was one of the best. It's an easy and entertaining read w/a lot of different info from the typical beginner feng shui book. Mr. Lau takes you through the whole process of feng shui w/an interesting history to help readers have a better understanding of why you're placing items where and what items not to use--he doesn't mention crystals and be VERY cautious w/bells and wind chimes. I would have liked to read even more of his practical cures since he also stresses that you don't need to spend a lot of money to cure most situations, that w/creativity, you can find cures w/in your budget. Well worth the time and money!
An honest and authentic approach to Feng Shui.......1999-09-16
This is the most concise and honest book on Feng Shui I have read. Written by a practitioner who has a long family lineage of the Nine Stars Feng Shui school - the oldest in China - it provides an excellent in-sight on the origins of Feng Shui and traces its evolution throughout the dynasties. The author is more concerned with the wisdom of Feng Shui than with focusing on how to improve one's life. He remains faithful to the compass school which is the traditional way of exercising this ancient sacred art. Clearly, the author has chosen not to expand on the higher levels of Feng Shui, but prefers to guide the reader through the practical steps to apply it and bring harmony in the home. In its essence, this art has much to teach us and the author is to be commended for presenting it in such a simplified and authentic manner.
A different perspective.......1999-03-26
The book was not as easy to read as the usual Feng Shui book for the Westerner. Also, instead of the total Bagua influence, there is more focus on the compass directions, the combinations of the elements and influence of color. The space is regarded as a whole, not a room by room analysis. There is one practice study. I am not sure which approach is best in Feng Shui, but this book made me more focused on other aspects rather than total bagua approach. It also doesn't treat every space as wonderful, but points out much of the negative while offering solutions.
not very informative.......1998-01-22
This book, when compared to other books on this subject, gives very little information. It is sparse in content, very poorly written and obviously is written to provide just a cursary glance at a subject which at present has a great deal of interest in the United States.

Complete waste of money.......2003-08-30
This book must have been written in 10 minutes. Many difficult topics are covered with one sentence explanantions, making the book worthless. I read the whole book in 15 minutes, in a room where I believe this book was written.
