5 out of 5 stars A myriad of practical tips--something for everyone.......2006-04-08

From one-on-one situations to presenting before a group, from face-to-face encounters to talking on the phone, Schloff and Yudkin cover all the bases.

Sections I recommend to those who attend my networking seminars (which are designed for people who think they're too shy to network effectively) include "People Don't Think I Mean Business When I Speak"; "I Can't Remember People's Names..."; "How Do I Break Into a Group of People Talking?"; "Can I Tell Beforehand If Someone Wants to Talk to Me?"; "Some People Can Begin Conversations Anywhere: Why Can't I?"; "I Hate Small Talk"; "I'm Never Sure Whether Someone Wants to Keep Talking to Me"; "My Conversations Always Seem to Die"; "I Don't Know How to End a Conversation"; "I Hate Calling People I Don't Know"; "Is There a Quick Way to Get Rid of Nervousness?"; "I Can't Stand Having to Sell (a Product, Service, or Myself)"; "People Say I'm Standoffish, But I'm Really Shy"; and "I'm Not a Good Listener."

Written in an engaging, lively style that makes for easy reading. Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Simple tips ANYONE can use to be a better communicator..........2005-10-07

For some, speaking before a large group - or even attending a small business meeting - is an overwhelming experience. Do your palms start to sweat, just thinking about it? Whether it's a job interview or a cocktail party - YOU are on-stage and in the spotlight.

At some point in our lives and careers, each one of us experiences tough situations or awkward moments. Times when we are nervous and wish we could communicate better. Who hasn't wondered: Do I talk too fast? Too slowly? Is my voice too nasal? During a meeting, do you ever think: How do I excuse myself to go to the restroom? Why does someone else always say what I was going to say? What if someone asks me a question I can't answer? What if I forget someone's name? What if I dribble salad dressing on my shirt in front of clients? Why do people always interrupt me? Why doesn't anyone ever listen to me? Am I a good listener? The office manager told me to call, but now she doesn't remember who I am! People think I'm standoffish, but I'm really shy.

Regardless of your profession, background, or level of experience, "Smart Speaking" provides an abundance of "60-Second Strategies" that will help you become more confident and a more effective communicator. (Reviewed by Marion E. Gold, author of the "Personal Publicity Planner: A Guide to Marketing YOU" and "Top Cops: Profiles of Women in Command.")

5 out of 5 stars Great Quick Tips.......2001-07-29

Everything about this book is quick to read and easy to apply. It is loaded with simple, practical tips covering angles and strategies for more than 100 communication problems. I especially like how it also covers social and performance fears that people need to address in order to communicate more effectively.

If one is looking for a comprehensive communication strategy reference, this isn't it. Instead, this is a series of short, peppy essays providing easy-to-remember, motivating advice for any speaking occasion - from formal to informal. It's smart. It's fun. It's indispensable.

4 out of 5 stars A handy reference ... surprisingly good!.......2001-05-05

I must admit I had low expectations when I first picked up this book. Just check the title: "Smart Speaking: 60-Second Strategies for More Than 100 Speaking Problems and Fears." Come on! That sounds a little gimmicky to me. How could one little book treat over 100 speaking problems? And what's a 60-second strategy anyway?!

The book is organized into chapters such as "My Presentation is Next Week - Help!," "Meeting Headaches," and "Awkward Moments." It's easy to look up your specific issue with catchy problem titles like "People don't think I mean business when I speak," "I've forgotten the name of someone who obviously knows me," "What if they ask a question I can't answer?," and so forth. ... I guarantee there's a problem in here (and a solution) for everyone!

As for the solutions, I think the authors call them 60-second strategies because it takes you about that long to read each one. Implementation will take far longer, of course... CAVEAT: This book does offer very practical tips for very common speech and communication problems. That said, the tips are short and sweet. Some people will want a more in-depth look at their particular speech needs.

So use this book as a springboard. It's a handy reference for anyone desiring to improve general communication skills and belongs on the shelf of any speech professional.

Book Description

A practical, readable guide to delivering superior presentations

Speakers bear the responsibility for communicating effectively with their audience: presenting a clear message, supporting it with well-structured explanations and examples, and delivering it with ease, grace, and good visuals. Unfortunately, this rarely happens, as anyone who has endured a substandard presentation knows only too well. The key for developing sound presentation skills need not, however, remain hidden. The Short Road to Great Presentations demystifies the art of public speaking as it shows you how to master the critical principles to make this skill an invaluable asset of your life and career.

Drawing on twenty years of experience in helping engineers, scientists, and business people develop powerful communication skills, PERC Communications founders Peter and Cheryl Reimold present an easy-to-follow program for crafting winning presentations. They focus on two principles: 1) find a message that is clearly meaningful and accessible to your audience, and 2) connect strongly with your audience throughout your presentation. In applying these principles to a series of step-by-step preparations and on-stage actions, the authors help speakers focus on their most vital content, strengthen their structure and delivery, andâperhaps, most importantâeliminate stress and aggravation. Chapter topics in this reader-friendly guide include:
  • Structuring your message for maximum effect
  • Preparing effective visuals
  • Understanding and using body language and eye contact
  • Handling tough questions and surprises
  • Making smart use of slide shows and presentation software
  • Conducting Web presentations and Web meetings

Timeless speaking tips are combined with up-to-date primers on the latest technology throughout. The Short Road to Great Presentations is a one-stop resource for learning and practicing superior professional communication.

From preparation to final delivery, from overcoming stage fright to managing Power Point, this wonderfully engaging and easy-to-read book takes you through every aspect of giving a presentation -- and makes it easy! By the time I had finished it, I felt able to give just about any presentation to any size or type of group. I went out and did it, using the Reimolds' methods, and it worked. I got my message across, and I think I did it persuasively. Anyone who has to give a presentation must take "The Short Road" to success.

    Book Description

Anyone who gets anxious about speaking in public has no doubt been given the same tiresome advice again and again. "Just open with a joke," or "just picture your audience in their underwear." If you've ever tried these suggestions, you've no doubt noticed that they are both ineffective and rather disturbing.

Nothing will help you feel more confident than having a carefully planned, thoughtfully written and well-rehearsed presentation.   Speak Smart is your roadmap to a winning performance, as this guide shows you how to:
    Write and prepare captivating presentations
Decide whether to ad-lib, prepare an outline or follow a script
    Set your jitters aside
    Skillfully use visual aids
Be aware of your body language
    Keep control of question/answer sessions

Included in the book are detailed lessons on:
    Speech and nonverbal communication
    Writing great presentations
    Choosing a presentation format
    Choosing visual aids
    Preparing for the big speech
    Adapting to speaking environments
    Fielding questions
    Speaking through the media
    Diaphragmatic exercises

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic, easy to read book.......2005-02-09

Speak Smart is a book looking at the techniques of public speaking. Speak Smart goes through all of the subtle things you don't think about when giving a talk, but really should. Things like speech preparation, how to talk (clarity, volume, etc), non-verbal communication, presentation formats are all covered.

Additional topics such as visual aids are looked at. My only problem with this book is that it is a little dated and didn't focus more on Powerpoint presentations, which is the defacto standard at most Universities. However additional sections of how to field questions from the audience, handling enemies, and how to prepare for a presentation make this an excellent read. The author also suggests other books for more information which I found to be invaluable.

The book is well laid out with the main points highlighted and repeat in a appendix for easy review. The author doesn't waste pages with useless information and his humor and wit make read this book very entertaining.

After my previous poor experiences with my last 2 Princeton Review books, I am happy to say that this is by far the best book in this series so far and I happily recommend it. 5 out of 5 stars.

4 out of 5 stars Not just what you say, but how you say it!.......2001-08-22

This book is about how to speak when giving presentations, with a focus on business presentations.

It describes how to say things, with an eye toward avoiding egregious speaking blunders and getting out of unpleasant situations. There is a chapter on how to write a presentation to be interesting and informative. Included is a section on visual presentations, and things to avoid while giving them.

One appendix has a list of valuable speaking exercises targeting respiratory muscles. The other is a list of 44 speaking pointers that were developed throughout the books. You'd be wise to read it before every presentation.

This book is full of simple ways to greatly improve one's speaking skills. I recommend it along with Winning! by Noelle Nelson.

5 out of 5 stars Speak Smart is more helpful than the rest.......2000-06-26

Most books about public speaking are tedious to read and the content is too general to apply in my specific situation, but Mira's "Speak Smart" was the exact opposite. Mira writes with a conversational, oftentimes funny voice, and the information he has to provide on public speaking is up-to-date, accessible, and completely relevant. I highly recommend this book if you're going to be giving a speech.

5 out of 5 stars Review and remember the rules for English grammar.......2003-01-27

Though this book is on grammar, it is not that hard. It tries to make the subject simple, fun, and the most important thing, easy to remember.

You'll need to make a review of some grammar, but the book is self-contained to that purpose, and it gives you all necessary tools for the work. These tools will help you to understand how to write and speak better English, and if they were not enough for you, every "rule" has examples and these examples, in turn, are explained when needed.

The book recognizes English is a changing language, so there are exceptions for some rules, but it shows you the most general exceptions and helps you to decide which road you should take.

Nonnative English speakers, beware: The book has "fun parts" that could be difficult to understand. If you are not an intermediate or advanced speaker of English, better look for another book.

            For Spanish speakers:

este es un buen libro para practicar y aprender gramática inglesa, pero está orientado a hablantes nativos del idioma, no a estudiantes. Si no están en un nivel avanzado, otro libro puede ser mejor.

5 out of 5 stars ELEGANT AND EASY.......1999-12-13

Barry Tarshis has given us a remarkably well done guidebook to that often complicated language we call "English". It is a priceless helping hand for everyone - students, writers, professionals, and just plain folks. Bravo Mr. Tarshis!

I use it and recommend it to many of my fellow students that are wading their way through college. Especially great for any international folk...the English language is a crazy beast.

5 out of 5 stars LOTS OF USEFUL INFORMATION IN JUST A FEW PAGES.......1998-06-23

This book took the confusion out of High School English class. Everyone who uses the written English language should invest in this book. It's easy to understand and fun to read.

Well, I really enjoyed the presentation. I love the 2 presenters and would like to get more of their work. I thought it was professionally done and very funny. I cannot really understand why the other reviewers hated it. Maybe it was not their kind of humor or maybe they expected something different or maybe they were just in a bad mood.

              1 out of 5 stars don't bother.......1999-02-11

I bought this tape set to listen to in the car on the way to work. Unfortunately it was a big disappointment. I expected some professional help for a working professional but what I got was some childish play with bad ethnic voice imitations that would probably offend several ethnic groups. Some of the information seems to be outdated although the copyright is 1998. This tape set sounds more like a college freshman's attempt at getting a "C" in a writing class. No useful information here.

                Book Description

Despite the backlash against lesbian and gay rights occurring in cities and states across the country, a growing number of corporations are actually expanding protections and benefits for their gay and lesbian employees. Why this should be, and why some corporations are increasingly open to inclusive policies while others are determinedly not, is what Nicole C. Raeburn seeks to explain in Changing Corporate America from Inside Out.

A long-overdue study of the workplace movement, Raeburn's analysis focuses on the mobilization of lesbian, gay, and bisexual employee networks over the past fifteen years to win domestic partner benefits in Fortune 1000 companies. Drawing on surveys of nearly one hundred corporations with and without gay networks, intensive interviews with human resources executives and gay employee activists, as well as a number of case studies, Raeburn reveals the impact of the larger social and political environment on corporations' openness to gay-inclusive policies, the effects of industry and corporate characteristics on companies' willingness to adopt such policies, and what strategies have been most effective in transforming corporate policies and practices to support equitable benefits for all workers.
