5 out of 5 stars Save your teen driver.......2007-05-27

Teens as well as their parents will find John Loughry's Saving Our Teen Drivers an excellent life saving resource. Loughry's use of aviation safety skills in relation to the teen driving issue brings a fresh, unique approach beyond the typical driver's education that most teens will experience. It is packed full of information to help keep your teen driver alive. As someone who has worked with teens in the education of safe driving, I would highly recommend this book and consider it a must read for parents as well as teens.

5 out of 5 stars Using Aviation Safety Skills on the Roadways.......2005-08-26

We have all read text books, instructional publications or technical manuals that are just plain boring. This author's style of intermixing stories from his flying experience keeps the book entertaining and makes it easy to relate to real life experiences. This is not the standard dry, preachy, recitation of the same old driving rules. This book should be manditory reading not only for new drivers but anyone with a less than stellar driving record regardless of age.

5 out of 5 stars What could be more important?.......2005-08-11

As parents of five young children, my wife and I have decided to make this book required reading prior to allowing our kids to get their permits. These pilot awareness concepts and training techniques are a perfect application for helping all drivers stay safe while on the road.

5 out of 5 stars What could be more important?.......2005-07-29

This book offers easy to follow advice on how to keep our kids ALIVE behind the wheel. Today's teens have more distractions than ever while driving. And they think they're invincible. We grown ups know better. I loved the examples and descriptions. Really useful information. Your kids should read this the month BEFORE they get their permits.

Highway accidents lead deaths for drivers between the ages of 15 and 20 years, and more than 80% are due to poor decisions wrought from inexperience, peer pressure, and immaturity. Loughry, a commercial pilot, attempts to save our teen drivers by presenting the 13 most common driving errors and the aviation safety skills used to avoid them. Pilots know that that first big mistake can take away your life. Loughry can help avert it.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars buyer beware!.......2003-05-24

This book has great photos and provides a very basic overveiw of the trucking industry. I would reccommend this book to any school library. Don't be fooled, this book is not written to help with answering more technical questions that would be sort after by students taking lessons for a career in the trucking industry... For this I strongly reccomend "Bumper to Bumper"

5 out of 5 stars Tractor-Trailer Trucker is exciting!.......2001-04-08

A Powerful Truck Book where we get to hook up the tractor to the trailer; load the cargo & inspect the rig. Put the truck in gear - you should see how many they have - pull onto the highway & head out in the driver's seat.

Before starting out there's a lot to do: check under the hood for fluid levels, shock absorbers & frayed hoses & wiring. Check the tires, load the cargo & do your circle check. Phew! That took a lot of time & now it's breakfast at the truck stop & then off on the road with all its sights & sounds, dreams & driving

With bold, bright photos & simple, engaging language, Joyce Slayton Mitchell & Stephen Borns takes us through a tractor-trailer trucker's day. They even provide us with a glossary & a page of trucker talk terms.

A grand learning & talking book - a must for every kid, young & old, who drools at the sight of tractor-trailers, juggernauts, behemoths! I loved this book!

3 out of 5 stars Good for learning.......2000-04-28

I think that this book is good for learning because it tells about tractor-trailers. It also tells how they fix trucks. The photos show good photographs in your head with the words.

    Book Description

Inspired by an anecdote told to him by Canadian Consultant, Leslie Howarth, Toni Goffe has produced a sparkling star in the sky of children's literature. Picture this: your child presents himself as dressed to go out wearing his favorite beanie-hat with the yellow stars (carefully matched with the yellow stars on his blue and green running shoes), his purple, fringed jacket with the giant eyeball motif, his striped T-shirt, and polka-dot tie, nicely complimented by his red checkered pants...He's thinking that you will be so proud when you see him in his well-appointed ensemble...but what does he hear? - "WEAR SOMETHING SENSIBLE!" Don't be surprised if his chin drops and he shouts: "MA, YOU'RE DRIVING ME CRAZY!" This is a hilarious and provocative exercise in parent-child role-reversal.

        Book Description

Most large firms are controlled by shareholders, who choose the board of directors and can replace the firms management. In rare instances, however, control over the firm rests with the workforce. Many explanations for the rarity of workers' control have been offered, but there have been few attempts to assess these hypotheses in a systematic way. This book draws upon economic theory, statistical evidence, and case studies to frame an explanation. The fundamental idea is that labor is inalienable, while capital can be freely transferred from one person to another. This implies that worker controlled firms typically face financing problems, encounter collective choice dilemmas, and have difficulty creating markets for control positions within the firm. Together these factors can account for much of what is known about the incidence, behavior, and design of worker- controlled firms. A policy proposal to encourage employee buyouts is developed in the concluding chapter. Gregory L. Dow is Professor and Chair of the Department of Economics at Simon Fraser University, British Columbia, Canada. He previously taught at the University of Alberta and Yale University, and has served as a visiting professor at the University of New South Wales, the Erasmus Institute for Philosophy and Economics, and the Swedish Collegium for Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences. Professor Dow is Associate Editor on the Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization and has published numerous articles on labor-managed firms and other topics in economic theory in leading journals such as the American Economic Review and the Journal of Political Economy.

5 out of 5 stars A serious approach to employee control.......2006-05-15

Dow makes a thorough survey of the literature and establishes a solid theoretical framework for workers' control. In the end of the book after nearly 200 pages, he finally presents a formula for transferring control (and ownership) away from capital suppliers and to labor suppliers. It is a thoughtful book though perhaps existing more in the realm of theory than actual practice. The case for capital controlling the firm while not theoretically exclusive, remains empiracally dominant and I don't think he provides a strong enough argument why worker control is better.

In any case, a very thoughtful book with some insightful ideas, highly recommended!

This text compares the corporate governance structures of the US quoted company and its European equivalent and the role which employees as non-shareholding stakeholders hold within those structures. It focuses on the incidents of ownership normally exercised by stakeholders and raises questions regarding different responses to the issue of mandated labour market regulation on both sides of the Atlantic.

4 out of 5 stars Good, basic description but many questions arise.......2001-04-19

Though "Learning from Saturn" will undoubtedly not be high on the general public's reading lists, for those interested it is a book that adequately describes the basics of the Saturn system that has gotten a lot of media coverage over the last decade or so from conception to the present. The various innovative structures of Saturn such as teams, modules, business units, and councils are first described, but the book is far more concerned with the interactions among the Saturn management and the local UAW union and with GM and the international UAW. While the authors liberally point out the successes of the Saturn system, they are equally concerned with demonstrating the shortcomings principally in the areas of communications and decision-making among the various parties that have impacted the performance of Saturn. Despite Saturn's cars consistently scoring high on consumer quality ratings, internally Saturn has had difficulties with problem solving, productivity, organizational learning, and even quality.

The more discerning reader will have many questions while reading this book, especially in light of the fact that the authors are highly experienced labor relations academics. After the PATCO wholesale firings in 1980, US corporations declared war on unions. Yet why did GM agree to share management of a business with the UAW in the early 80s? The authors' explanation of a downturn in sales is insufficient. In actuality it was sheer panic, or desperation, on the part of GM coupled with the UAW being the strongest union in the US that prompted GM to go against its every instinct. That is not a trivial point.

The core production unit at Saturn is the work team consisting of 6 to 15 members with one of those individuals being elected as team leader. Teams have the responsibility of dealing with many aspects of production: work planning and scheduling, material and inventory control, budget constraints, repairs, training, quality, hiring, vacation scheduling, absenteeism, etc. Team members do receive several hundred hours of training in these areas, but it strains belief to find that this amount of expertise can be more or less equally imparted among disparate teams. With so much dependency on teams, a few teams that do not perform well despite their best efforts could easily interfere with overall results. Since teams essentially take on the role of HR management, they have to deal competently with such issues as discrimnation in hiring or discipline. What happens to union solidarity when team leaders are forced to discipline co-workers?

Certainly assembly is an essential part of the quality of an automobile but engineering would have to be more important. But the authors do not address the fact that engineering is not co-located with production and is not part of the UAW. How does the local union or teams determine that the highly technical aspects of the car design are correct? Again, expertise issues do not simply disappear with participation.

The authors do discuss organizational problems. They contend that the lack of communications or follow-up is the key to most problems. But not enough information is provided concerning the actual workings of teams to be sure that deeper structural problems do not exist.

The authors point out that the international UAW is concerned that the local Saturn union takes on characteristics much like the company unions that were essentially banned by the Wagner Act of 1935. But the authors could have indicated that unions are not necessarily even needed for substantial employee participation. For example, the legislatively mandated works councils of northern Europe provide for co-determination by employees in workplaces with resort to labor courts in the event of employer conflicts. It is not unions per se that is the key for employee input. There have to be channels for communications regardless of the system and there must be due process for workers that exercise voice. In addition, participation can occur with or without production teams.

It is surprising that the authors did not mention the efforts by some in the US Congress to pass legislation permitting employers to establish work teams on their own terms with no due process for employees. The authors are concerned with learning from Saturn. The authors are undoubtedly fully aware that the closest that most employers will come to a Saturn system is to install some sort of pseudo employee participation scheme.

I do find much to criticize about this book. But I do think that it is essential reading for anyone interested in labor relations and employee participation.

          Book Description

Is there one best way to run the modern business corporation? What is the appropriate balance between shareholders, executives, and employees? These questions are being vigorously debated as layoffs, scandals, and restructurings rattle companies around the world. The common assumption is that globalization is merging the varieties of corporate capitalism. Yet, as this book shows, corporations in Japan and the United States are responding differently to the pressures unleashed by globalization. In America, shareholders have emerged as dominant while employment is more transitory and market-oriented. In Japan, shareholders are gaining influence but employees still play a key role in corporate strategy and governance. In The Embedded Corporation, Sanford Jacoby traces this enduring diversity to national differences in economic history and social norms, and, paradoxically, to global competition itself.

The book's vantage point for exploring the varieties of capitalism is the headquarters of large corporations--in particular, their human resources departments, where changes in markets and technology turn into corporate labor policies affecting millions of workers. Jacoby reveals the inner workings of these departments. Despite some cross-fertilization, Japanese and American corporations maintain distinctive approaches to human resource management, with Japanese HR departments occupying a more central position within the corporation. As Jacoby shows, this has important consequences for how firms compete, for corporate governance, and even for the level of inequality in Japan and the United States.

The Embedded Corporation is a major contribution to our understanding of comparative management and the relationship between business, society, and the global economy.

Unlike most of the rah-rah books published in the HR area, this book is based on real research in Japanese and American companies. I don't agree with all of it, but it is interesting, insightful, and original. I would urge all HR professionals, corporate or consultant, to have a look at this book and see what we can (still) learn from the Japanese.

            Book Description

Most scholarship on corporate governance in the last two decades has focused on the relationships between shareholders and managers or directors. Neglected in this vast literature is the role of employees in corporate governance. Yet "human capital," embodied in the employees, is rapidly becoming the most important source of value for corporations, and outside the United States, employees often have a significant formal role in corporate governance.

This volume turns the spotlight on the neglected role of employees by analyzing many of the formal and informal ways that employees are actually involved in the governance of corporations, in U.S. firms and in large corporations in Germany and Japan. Examining laws and contexts, the essays focus on the framework for understanding employees' role in the firm and the implications for corporate governance. They explore how and why the special legal institutions in German and Japanese firms by which employees are formally involved in corporate governance came into being, and the impact these institutions have on firms and on their ability to compete. They also consider theoretical and empirical questions about employee share ownership.

The result of a conference at Columbia University, the volume includes essays by Theodor Baums, Margaret M. Blair, David Charny, Greg Dow, Bernd Frick, Ronald J. Gilson, Jeffrey N. Gordon, Nobuhiro Hiwatari, Katharina Pistor, Louis Putterman, Edward B. Rock, Mark J. Roe, and Michael L. Wachter.

From the supplier: Too many individuals who work for non-profit organizations have assumed the task of motivating their boards to raise funds, advocate charitable giving or to take any action at all. As organizational boards are supposed to act as trustees on behalf of corporate owners, their members ought to realize that they are ultimately responsible for what the organization is and what it will become. Boards have ownership responsibility for their organizations.
