There is NO EXCUSE for this book to still be in print. "Reengineering" was a trite meaningless buzzword of the early nineties, that when adopted by hack middle managers incapable of thinking anything through, or imagining unexpected results, cost tens of thousands of people their jobs. The authors of this book have already issued their mea culpa for getting so much, so wrong, in the Wall Street Journal. Management fads come and go. Your job is to figure out if the hot new book sweeping through management circles has any merit, or if it's garbage.

I am horrified that this book is even available. If ever there was a book that deserved zero stars, this is it. Stop paying these two moron authors for their incompetent advice.

3 out of 5 stars Text on Reengineering.......2006-11-14

Hammer and Champy do a great job of detailing through the reengineering concept and process. They use understandable examples, and communicate benefits, challenges, and necessities well. A bit dry to read and get into, once I got past the beginning, this book moved along nicely.

4 out of 5 stars Reengineering the Corporation .......2006-06-02

The book is written by management consultants who suggest re-engineering the organizations as the most effective way for companies to remain competitive. This entails starting afresh to devise innovative ways to carry out business processes and serve customers more effectively. Managers, employees, business processes, among other things in the entire organization have to radically change so as to save costs, increase revenue, improve quality and serve customers better.

Business process reengineering requires visionary and competent leaders who exploit the vast opportunities availed by the latest information communication technologies, reorganizing employees into cohesive and productive working teams.

This is a well written book with clear explanations reinforced by case studies making it easily understandable to a diverse readership that may wish to understand the concept of business process reengineering and how they can implement it in the organization. They also make a good attempt to rescue business process reengineering from being just another fad of the 1990s and from the appalling image it had acquired for itself as a pretext to indiscriminately retrench people.

One major flaw I see is the perception that business process reengineering is the answers to all problems that an organization may be experiencing and that it is relatively simple and straightforward to implement. That is not always the case and one needs to analyze to see if reengineering is the optimal solution to the challenges of inertia and lack of customer focus and other ills that an organization may be experiencing.

5 out of 5 stars A great book........2005-09-10

I thought this book was very informative and interesting. The writing style used was also good. It was especially nice to read specific stories of successful reengineering.

    Book Description

"The walls between a company, its customers, and its suppliers-even between its competitors-are coming down. In a world of free-flowing information and products, X-ENGINEERING THE CORPORATION reveals a radical new vision of the corporation.

Instead of a collection of separate companies turning out goods and services, Champy shows us a web of interacting processes and people that includes every organization touched by a company's product. Gone are the old secrecy controls. In their place is a collaborative environment where people have all the information they need, ideas are shared, and businesses learn to:

ïCreate Harmony. By getting more in tune with how its customers operate, Owens and Minor delivers medical products exactly when its customers want them-and reduces costs.
ïBe Transparent. Electronics manufacturing service company Solectron reveals to its customers the details of its processes-an innovation that keeps it competitive while speeding and streamlining production.
ïUnderstand the Role of Customers. EMC, the world's leading manufacturer of memory storage devices, talks with, listens to, and values customer "pull" more than ever before-and now defines its process "push" with pinpoint accuracy.
ïContinuously X-engineer. When PNC Bank used the full power of the Internet in every one of its divisions, its efficiency-and that of its customers-improved exponentially.

Inspiring and illuminating, this book uncovers the unlimited potential that imaginatively applied information technology offers corporations. X-ENGINEERING THE CORPORATION is a must-read: because change is the one thing all businesspeople must do well today.

What Mr.Champy has written, I have experienced. Most of us in technology and related industry have participated in the client-server boom, where all corporations were breaking the inter-department barriers and "re-engineering" their corporations.

    ...

I don't doubt even for a moment when Mr.Champy claims that the "X-engineering" revolution will be much bigger than the "reengineering revolution". The technology is ready and almost mature - internet, application servers, XML standards. The business problem is obvious - break down the corporate boundaries to achieve efficiency. Dell is the poster-boy. Current economic climate is creating a momentary damper.

The only gripe I have the book is that it didn't include a chapter on technologies that make X-engineering happen. This probably would have completed the picture for the IT manager...

What Mr.Champy has written, I have experienced. Most of us in technology and related industry have participated in the client-server boom, where all corporations were breaking the inter-department barriers and "re-engineering" their corporations.

I worked on $$ million dollar project for an Insurance company and yes, we drastically reduced their policy-writing and claim-processing time. Thanks to Mr. Champy and Mr. Collins. The company achieved huge tangible ROI.

I don't doubt even for a moment when Mr.Champy claims that the "X-engineering" revolution will be much bigger than the "reengineering revolution". I had written my thoughts prior to reading the book.
Uncanny resemblance to Mr. Champy's thought-process.

3 out of 5 stars A great book for the first-timers.......2002-06-06

It is a great book for those who have not read any of the Champy/Hammer reengineering books, but would like to understand the reengineering foundation. However, those, who have and practice reengineering or `the art of agility' in corporate America - will be disappointed. The book provides no new solutions to the present chaos in global business. The book does not even identify the systemic problems plaguing corporate America. Forget about connecting the dots, the book cannot even show you the dots. Everyone knows to create harmony or to be good to your customer. It is easy to name companies who are doing well and highlight some general processes even though the same company might file for chapter 11 a few months down the road. The problem is systemic like cancer that pervades the business community as evidenced from great companies like Xerox, Polaroid, Global Crossing, K-Mart, Stage Stores, Worldcom and so on. The book does not identify the problem nor prescribes the life style changing solution. The book does not even complain that the people who work in information technology department have no clue about "information" let alone know how to use them. Everyone in the IT department is an expert in the specific silo based hardware or software tools - but not in the "information". The companies never ask for it and hence never get it. So...nothing new here. The book talks great things about SciQuest. I too had dealings with that company. My impressions were along the line of "Information? - what is that?" Just a simple check of their publicly available financials would tell a different story...

    5 out of 5 stars Great read.......2002-05-28

Want to add the next kicker to your business model? Then seriously consider X-Engineering your Corporation. Champy gives solid examples from both high technology 'giants' such as Dell, Cisco and Solectron and more traditional companies in healthcare, financial services and publishing in a good balance that demonstrate how taking a different perspective on your corporation's processes can deliver real results. Extend your processes out to your customers, your suppliers and even your competition to achieve customer informed value propositions that balance between product/service push and market pull. Operate only those processes which are really core to you as internal 'secrets'. Champy gives advice on how companies can stage their X-engineering efforts and gives guidance on common pitfalls.

This book is a good, fast read, sure to excite any executive's mind who wants to position their company to have a sustained advantage and achieve a new platform from which to have options to grow their business.

    5 out of 5 stars Inspirational.......2002-04-05

Once again, Jim Champy has is ahead of his time with X-Engineering. I found the book to be another example of visionary thinking as he extends the thinking of corporate reengineering beyond traditional boundaries. The book is informative and inspirational.

        Book Description

In just a few years, "reengineering" has become a significant way for companies to rethink and restructure their organizations. Now, James Sagner shows how to apply this highly effective process to the specific area of cashflow, one of the most essential elements of a business. In detail, he explains how to reengineer a company's cashflow system in order to:

** put a company in the strongest possible financial position
        (increase available cash)
** radically improve internal processing systems
** determine where outsourcing would be an efficient alternative to an in-house system.

The book provides specific, tested techniques for assessing a cashflow system, including the time-value of money, gross margin analysis, scenario impact analysis, and an original model: the payment stream matrix.

        Customer Reviews:

        1 out of 5 stars Nothing New.......2002-05-20

Perhaps it is because the book is now 5 years old, but reading it now in 2002 it adds no value. Most of the "advise" given is very generic and does not break any new ground (which I am sure it did not do in 1997 either). For the non-financial manager there might be some new things in there, but the the CFO or other finance professionals the book can serve as a brush-up at best.

        5 out of 5 stars Very good.......1999-01-05

Excellent book. My company is using it as a reference for reengineering its cashflows. I do look forward to Book II, which I expect to be about implimentation.

4 out of 5 stars Good ideas--leaves out one area, i.e. credit card processing.......1998-11-18

Good overview of area. Because so much of cash managment involves credit card processing and reconcilement, this book could use an update to cover this area. Otherwise, good ideas--practical and to the point.

Continuous Business Process Management is the concept of continuously defining, analyzing, and improving a business process. In this IBM Redbook, we explore the business process development life cycle. We use HOLOSOFX BPM Workbench to model an existing process. We use the model to create, simulate, and analyze the process, and select optimal new process design. We use HOLOSOFX BPM Server to share process model information through the Web and to provide a secure repository for access and version control. We convert a business process model into an MQSeries Workflow model and generate an appropriate code format. This format is imported into MQSeries Workflow where the process metrics will be captured in real time. We use HOLOSOFX BPM Monitor to monitor work-in-process items and perform corrective actions by reassigning, reprioritizing, or suspending them. We use actual process metrics to answer what-if questions and make process improvements.

            Book Description

Many companies applying lean use a top-down approach - a person or small group defines the business process in general terms and progressively expands it into more detailed elements. This method fails when the person or small group defining the process lacks the detailed knowledge of the tasks involved to sequence them correctly. Creating Lean Corporations, by Jeffrey Morgan, however, utilizes a bottom-up approach in which the employees who perform the tasks are empowered to create and manage their own portions of the business process. Each task is defined using a task model that indicates the input-output relationships between tasks -- it dictates the sequence that the tasks should be performed within the business process. This approach is essential for creating and improving business processes that are large and complex but still efficient.

The author presents three concepts in applying lean principles to an organization:

            (1) Hierarchies for managing large, complex systems and processes -- A template for all lean organizations is presented that allows functional (horizontal) and process-oriented (vertical) groups to be integrated into a single organizational hierarchy where command-and-control is clear and direct.

            (2) The use of process models to define the organization's business processes -- A standard method of process modeling that allows business processes to be represented and managed as hierarchies. The benefit of this approach is that process management is implemented in a hierarchical fashion where the level of detail increases as you move down the levels in the hierarchy.

            (3) A lean, bottom-up approach to business process reengineering - this works much better than traditional top-down approaches on larger, more complex business processes. This lean approach was successfully applied at a major automotive manufacturing company and was awarded the Charles F. "Boss" Kettering Award as one of the most important technological innovations in 2000.

This book is for business process managers (especially lean leaders) who seek to reengineer their business processes using lean principles.

From the supplier: A survey of corporate executives by Ernst & Young reveals that there is disagreement over which executives who should have responsibility for reengineering their corporations through the application of information technology. The chief information officers that were surveyed believe that they should have the responsibility for reengineering, which entails the complete redesign of business processes based on new technological capacities. However, other executive believed that business unit executives should have the responsibility.

                  Book Description

Interest Rate Models: an Infinite Dimensional Stochastic Analysis Perspective studies the mathematical issues that arise in modeling the interest rate term structure. These issues are approached by casting the interest rate models as stochastic evolution equations in infinite dimensional function spaces. The book is comprised of three parts. Part I is a crash course on interest rates, including a statistical analysis of the data and an introduction to some popular interest rate models. Part II is a self-contained introduction to infinite dimensional stochastic analysis, including SDE in Hilbert spaces and Malliavin calculus. Part III presents some recent results in interest rate theory, including finite dimensional realizations of HJM models, generalized bond portfolios, and the ergodicity of HJM models.
