Recently, temperament traits have come to the forefront of child development theory. In Raising Your Spirited Child, Mary Sheedy Kurcinka's first contribution is to redefine the "difficult child" as the "spirited" child, a child that is, as she says, MORE. Many people are leery about books that are too quick to "type" kids, but Kurcinka, a parent of a spirited child herself and a parent educator for 20 years, doesn't fall into that trap. Instead, she provides tools to understanding your own temperament as well as your child's. When you understand your temperamental matches--and your mismatches--you can better understand, work, live, socialize, and enjoy spirit in your child. By reframing challenging temperamental qualities in a positive way, and by giving readers specific tools to work with these qualities, Kurcinka has provided a book that will help all parents, especially the parents of spirited children, understand and better parent their children.
Book Description
The spirited child often called "difficult" or "strong-willed" can easily overwhelm parents, leaving them feeling frustrated and inadequate. Spirited kids are, in fact, simply "more" by temperament, they are more intense, sensitive, perceptive, persistent, and uncomfortable with change than the average child. Through vivid examples and a refreshingly positive viewpoint, Mary Sheedy Kurcinka offers parents emotional support and proven strategies for handling their spirited child. Raising Your Spirited Child will help you:
- Understand your child's and your own temperamental traits
- Plan for success with a simple four-step program
- Discover the power of positive rather than negative labels
- Cope with tantrums and blowups when they do occur
- Develop strategies for handling mealtimes, bedtimes, holidays, school and many other situations
Filled with personal insight and authoritative advice, Raising Your Spirited Child can help make parenting the joy it should be, rather than the trial it can be.

Strongly recommend.......2007-08-14
This book is one of the best parenting books available. It is one of the few books that actually offers substantive advice about how to deal with certain behaviors. Furthermore, it is the only book that I have read that maintains a positive outlook on "spirited" children. The book does not focus on ways to change the child and does not imply that the child has a disability. It simply teaches the parent how to deal to deal with behaviors and feelings of the spirited child. I cannot say enough about how wonderful the book is. I reread parts of it nearly every night.
Saved my mind.......2007-07-20
I was so sure my son was different in so many ways that I would never be able to keep up with him. This book helped me decide which of his spirits needed extra attention from me and how to direct that spirit once I identified it. Now when he goes nuts jumping up and down on the bed, I know it's because he has a lot of pent up energy from having to be still for a long time (i.e. school). When he gets very quiet and withdraws I know he is needing special one on one attention because something has bothered him too much and he's embarrassed by that. There are so many nuances for each of our children and this book really helps figure out the particular ones that your own child is gifted with.

If you think you need this book, then you do!.......2007-05-21
This book is fantastic. I just can't say enough great things about it. If you think your child might be "spirited" do yourself a favor and give this book a read.
A great guide for the perplexed (parent, that is).......2007-04-22
This lady obviously knows her stuff, as well as her audience. Ms. Sheedy Kurcinka seems to be describing my child in some passages. I found the tips for heading off a meltdown quite helpful. And it's of course comforting to know I'm not in this alone! I'd recommend the book to any parent who's getting gray dealing with a "spirited" child.

Book Description
Now in a NEW UPDATED version, Kurcinka offers parents the most up–to–date research, effective strategies and real life stories for:
•Managing intensity – not just the kids, but parents too
•Getting the sleep every family needs and deserves,
•Choosing their battles
•Helping children to hear their instructions
•Assisting children in getting along with siblings and peers, and
•Being successful in school and at home.
Spirited children possess traits we value in adults, yet find challenging in children. Studies now show that these children are "wired" to be more reactive to the world around them. The solution, rather than medication or punishment, is understanding temperament and working with it. Kurcinka in a supportive, warm style is able to reveal to parents how to do it, often leading them to ask, "How did she get into my home?" Winner of the Parents' Choice Award, voted one of the top twenty books for parents, and a "real life saver" for parents, this updated version is eagerly awaited by parents and professionals.

Good for every parent........2007-10-05
Raising Your Spirited Child is a good resource for every parent. It is important to understand your child's unique temperament. I especially like the practical suggestions and summaries of things to say to your child. It is a very positive book!
Life Changing.......2007-10-02
I can only describe this book as liberating. When I found it, our son was 5. I sat and cried with relief, knowing I was not alone. 7 years later I still quote many part of the books. I don't even know how many copies I have bought and lent out. My favorite part was the real definitions of introvert vs. extrovert...wow, what perspective. This concept alone has totally helped me to better understand my family and friends. It is also a wonderful thing to teach my kids so that they can recognize the needs of themselves and their friends. Our son is now 12 years old, very intelligent with a huge heart. This book helped us to learn how to adapt his environment without enabling him. Understanding his need for more sleep, less drama, and smoother transitions help him to be stronger and more secure emotionally and let's be honest....it all benefits the family dynamics. Praise God!
truly excellent book.......2007-08-16
As soon as I started reading this book, I used some of the recommened techniques and got miraculous results. It helped me deal with my stress, and I found my 3 year old really relieved too. I guess anyone would prefer this style of interaction over our previous push & pull. I think this is a must read for anyone with any kind of child...not just spirited ones. It not only gives incite into understanding and dealing with your child's temperament, it helped me understand my own better too so I could clue her into my trigger points as well as her own.
Great resource-- I'm purchasing a 2nd copy 10 yrs later!.......2007-08-01
This was a total eye opener when I originally purchased this book 10 years ago! (My son was 2 and my daughter was a newborn!)I've since recommended it and loaned it out so many times that my copy didn't come back the last time! (And I can't remember who has it now!) I both laughed & cried while reading it and I finished it in 1 night (newborn-remember?)It really helped both my husband and me see what WE were doing differently--not necessarily "wrong", just not RIGHT for our son--and WE made changes. (Note to the person who wrote "this book had no tips we could use": read it again & remember you're the parent who needs to guide the child.) We realized simple things--we shouldn't have taken him on numerous errands at the end of his day or WE paid for it (our son doesn't handle ANY change well and he still doesn't--he's 12 now!) We've had to teach HIM how to handle difficult situations. I'm now going to read it again to help with the preteen years for both of my children!
Wonderful!!!.......2007-07-08
This book is fantastic for anyone who suspects that they are raising a spirited child. Other child raising books just aren't sufficient when you're raising a child with "spirit." It was a delight and a relief to know that there are other children in the world who have as much energy and are as tenacious as mine. I highly recommend this book!
Book Description
In this sequel to "Rural Development: Putting the last first" Robert Chambers argues that central issues in development have been overlooked, and that many past errors have flowed from domination by those with power.
Development professionals now need new approaches and methods for
interacting, learning and knowing. Through analyzing experience - of past mistakes and myths, and of the continuing methodological revolution of PRA (participatory rural appraisal) - the author points towards solutions.
In many countries, urban and rural people alike have shown an astonishing ability to express and analyze their local, complex and diverse realities which are often at odds with the top-down realities imposed by professionals. The author argues that personal, professional and institutional change is essential if the realities of the poor are to receive greater recognition. Self-critical awareness and changes in concepts, values, methods and behaviour must be developed to explore the new high ground of participation and empowerment.
"Whose Reality Counts?" presents a radical challenge to all concerned
with development, whether practitioners, researchers or policy-makers, in all organizations and disciplines, and at all levels from fieldworkers to the heads of agencies. With its thrust of putting the first last it presents a new, exciting and above all practical agenda for future development which cannot be ignored.
Book Description
This book is an ethnography of development in practice. It builds on recent work in the anthropology of development in its examination of the evolution and persistence of a number of key ideas about gender, technology and race. It explores how these are rooted in both material practices and ideologies, notably the Enlightenment and colonialism, but goes beyond previous studies which have tended to focus mainly on the apparently monolithic power of the developers. The authors argue for a more nuanced account of power through analysis of the relationship between individual agency and structural constraint. Their fascinating study shows how a simple dichotomy between "us," the developers, and "them," the victims of development, misconstrues the nature of the proccesses involved.
Book Description
You’ll never again confuse affect and effect!
Have you ever been fazed by the spelling of phased, or fretted over the difference between anxiety and angst, stationery and stationary? If so, you are not alone: the English language is a minefield, full of words that look and sound alike but mean different things in different places.
Who’s Whose? is an entertaining and essential A to Z guide to the most commonly confused words in English today, with real examples of good and bad usage to make differences crystal clear. In addition to documenting these verbal confusions, it offers a sympathetic guide to the seriousness of each gaffe (the Embarassment rating), an explanation of why it happens, and some handy hints on how to avoid it in future. With Who’s Whose in your corner, you’ll never again mistake a principle for a principal.
Customer Reviews:
She is very feminine, you are a bit effeminate and I am effete.......2007-05-29
Very useful and highly entertaining book. Good explanations, clear examples and well written.
However, it has two problems that should cost a star each:
- The layout of the pages is quite bad. A reference book like this cannot afford this type of blunder. In all cases it is very difficult to quickly find the actual definition of the words under study. You need to read the whole thing to be able to find it.
- Some of the pitfalls are a bit ludicrous. Do people really confuse Libertarian with Libertine? Industrial with Industrious? Livid with Lurid? Ad hoc with Ad lib? De facto with de jure? In cases like this the author just shows examples of correct usage--perhaps because it would be very difficult to find examples of incorrect usage.
Useful and fun.......2007-05-24
The book is clear and interesting. Fun to flip through and easy to use as a reference. Good choice.
Who's Whose: A No-Nonsense Guide to Easily Confused Words.......2007-05-23
I love this book; it is well written and easy to understand. I recommend it to those who want to avoid confusion in written expression.
Book Description
Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) and related participatory approaches have opened up new ways in which policy can be influenced by the realities of those who are poor, weak, marginalized, and excluded.
Based on the premise that sustainable policies require local voices to be heard, this book demonstrates the far-reaching implications of such approaches for the development sector. Its impact on the poor is potentially phenomenal.
The book is divided into three sections:
+Part 1 explores case studies in which participatory methods and approaches have been used to influence policy.
+Part 2 concentrates on Participatory Poverty Analysis (PPA), an innovative approach designed to bring local poverty and policy analysis into the policy process through the cross-cultural lens of poverty.
+Part 3 discusses key issues arising during workshops and includes chapters by several participants.
With careful and essential research and evaluation into PRA methods and practices, Whose Voice? is easily digestible with many clear, detailed case studies from around the world, and analysis of key development agencies, NGOs and organizations across the sector over the past decade.

Re-localize now!.......2007-03-24
As global warming becomes a household word and something the mainstream is waking up to, Whose Common Future provides a remarkable and useful explanation of the world's accelerating environmental crisis. The authors trace the crisis to the usurpation of locally- managed resources such as streams, forests, street space and even radio wavelengths, by state governments and big business. The destruction of local communities to remove their power to conserve local resources, the authors asset, is the true tragedy of the commons.

Book Description
Many of the techniques that drug traffickers and organized crime figures use to launder money are also employed by terrorist groups - as those involved in investigating the attacks of September 11, 2001 soon discovered. These techniques and their perpetrators have grown in number and sophistication, creating an urgent need for investigators to develop strategies that will help keep them one step ahead of the game. Authoritative and accessible, Money Laundering: A Guide for Criminal Investigators, Second Edition is based on the author's extensive experience in law enforcement. It provides a clear understanding of money laundering practices and explains the investigative and legislative processes that are essential in detecting and circumventing this illegal and ultimately dangerous activity. In addition to being an informative and straightforward resource for those investigating complex narcotics cases or other cases in which there is a financial component, this new edition addresses techniques used to track down the money trail of terrorists who are highly motivated, well-trained, organized, disciplined - and well-funded. What's New in the Second Edition: þ Explains money laundering provisions under the U.S. Patriot Act þ Explains how the changes in federal forfeiture law affect existing money laundering law þ Clarifies current legislation and how it affects money laundering investigation þ Outlines the basics as well as the emerging trends of terrorist financing þ Includes two new chapters on the investigation of terrorist activities
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Resource.......2005-09-30
The text provides excellent introduction into the crime of money laundering...very easy to understand and at times comical. Although the book is a bit dated, its concepts remain the same and I would recommend this text for anyone interested in understanding the role of money laundering.
author is excellent at public safety.......2002-03-07
being the same field for over 30 years, i found the book lacking in real facts.......but an excellent effort for 76.00 dollars
Money Laundering for the Stupid........2001-04-08
Do not waste your time or money on this book. The book assumes that all readers have the financial literacy of a high school student. Of course, the book was purportly written for police investigations so maybe the authors dummed it down so their fellow law enforcement friends would be able to understand it. For example, the book goes into painly silly details about what a balance sheet and income statement are all about and how to read them properly. (ie the section on debit-credit was particularly useless) My personal favorite was the filler section on how to buy real-estate or securities. The book only really gets to the interesting(and the most imporant aspect of a book on money laundering) "how to" structures of money laundering operations in a couple of chapters. One chapter is basically dedicated to simple structures like using smurfs so that is essentially useless. BOTTOM LINE: if you are at all familar with money laundering, financial statements, bank secrecy act, tax rules, yadda yadda, then this book is a waste of your time. If you know nothing about the above, then you may find the book useful.
An excellent nuts and bolts introduction........1999-10-18
As a Canadian police officer, I picked up this book expecting to find its understandable American focus to be of limited use to me. Instead I was very surprised. Yes it is entirely American in focus and reference, but its explanation of laundering methodologies - and weaknesses - was exceptionally straight forward and of universal application. I was able to apply several aspects immediately to an existing international investigation of commercial fraud.
It is in its explanations that the book is strongest. These are simply written, without jargon. For example, using the analogy of Al Capone's enterprises, it gives the best and simplest description of a balance sheet and financial statement and what goes into their makeup that I have ever seen. When this began I was suspicious that the Capone analogy was going to have to be stretched beyond any usefulness, but this turned out not to be the case at all. In fact, the analogy gave the explanations life and character.
Its outline of resources, to consider was equally direct and useful, even to a Canadian investigation.
congrats to john and sydney- published authors & experts.......1999-10-11
