Customer Reviews:
Buy this book at your own peril........2002-09-02
Charles Paul Conn has written a laughably one-sided book, and tries to present it as unvarnished fact - the phrase 'yellow journalism' keeps popping into my head.
If you're already positive that Amway is the best thing since sliced bread, this book will probably be just what you're looking for - a pleasant, Pollyannaesque romp through the fluffy clouds and green meadows of Amway's public relations machine. To the outside observer, however, this book is just another example of propaganda work-for-hire.
It is worth noting that the word 'obviously' in the text invariably appears whenever Conn has run out of facts and wants to make some breathtakingly irrational leap of logic. For an example, read the first paragraph on page 53, where Conn states that the solution to Amway's leadership problem (his words, not mine) "lies obviously with the children of the co-founders..." Or look at the last paragraph on page 55, where he declares that the Amway founders' children are "obviously destined by birth and training for higher things." It's a shame he doesn't have any footnotes or a bibliography or anything to back up these interesting statements.
In all fairness, however, the book is reasonably sturdy, making it an excellent coaster or candidate to shim up a short table leg, and is, therefore, worth the nickel this book may cost you at a yard sale.

Distributor or not this is a great informational source.......1999-12-17
I have married into this business. Promises to Keep has been a very informational tool in helping me understand what our business is all about. The facts about the day to day functioning may be dated, but the book is not about facts, it is about the foundation of a large corporation and the fundamentals of keeping a great business going. I am purchasing this book for family that may only have a snapshot of what we are involved in. I cannot wait to share it!
Amway Corporate History, Distributor Bios, and FAQ's.......1998-06-10
A slightly outdated book describing a brief history of the Amway Corporation, some profiles of sucessful distributors, and several frequently asked questions. Good material, but contains several facts that no longer apply to the corporation or its millions of distributors.

Book Description
One of the principal reasons why international aid programmes have often been unsuccessful is that imported solutions are not based upon the indigenous institutions in African countries. In b IThe Cultural Foundations of Economic Theory, /b Emily Chamlee-Wright argues that connections between these institutions and the cultural context which produces and sustains them has been misunderstood by mainstream economic theory which is fundamentally acultural. Instead Chalmlee-Wright argues, the economics of the Austrian School provide a far stronger theoretical framework which can introduce cultural analysis into questions of economic development and other market processes. The author draws on extensive ethnographic field research as well as a challenging and original critique of mainstream neoclassical analysis in a detailed case study of women in Ghana.

Join the best minds on business as they envision the future
The Drucker Foundation
This much anticipated second title in the Drucker Foundation Future Series imagines tomorrow's organization.
Bringing together such heavy hitters as James Champy, C.K. Prahalad, Charles Handy, Lewis Platt (CEO of Hewlett Packard), and Jay Galbraith, this second volume in the Drucker Foundation Future Series is poised to be the business book of the year.
In these 40 new, never-before-published essays, best-selling authors, top-notch consultants, Fortune 500 CEO?s, and revered management scholars expound on the challenges we face in building the organization of tomorrow. Fresh perspectives and challenging observations will enlighten business people from all industries on how to keep their organizations healthy and competitive well into the 21st century.
Supported by two giants--Peter Drucker opens the book, and Charles Handy closes it--the authors within provide their own perspectives on tomorrow, in thoughtful, to-the-point chapters. Together they underscore where, when, and how organizations and their leaders must evolve, not only to survive but also to prosper.
The contributors show how to:
* prepare for breakdowns and create the nimble, change-adept company
* navigate generational riptides among employees by meeting their preferences in leadership style
* attract, motivate, and retain the best employees
* achieve a winning culture of high performance and high self-esteem
* support work-life balance and provide flexibility to knowledge workers
Today's and tomorrow's leaders everywhere will find practical advice in these essays to help them reshape their own organizations of the future.
Customer Reviews:
Outstanding views for today and tomorrow........2001-06-12
'The Organization of the Future' is an outstanding integration of much of the current thinking of leadership, organization, strategy, change, and innovation. Frances Hesselbein, Marshall Goldsmith, and Richard Beckhard (editors) have gathered together in this collection remarkable 49 thought thinkers.
Charles Handy suggests in his chapter that "Margaret Wheatley, in 'Leadership and the New Science,' has written of the danger of believing in Newtonian organization in a quantum age. Newton wasn't wrong. He just wasn't right enough to cope with the dilemmas of science now. Similarly, the old way of looking at organizations wasn't wrong; it just does not capture the real essence of what it means to organize today." On the other hand, Peter F.Drucker notes in his introduction, "...now a totaly different approach is emerging, not replacing the older approaches but being superimposed on them: it says that the purpose of organizations is to get results 'outside,' that is, to achieve performance in the market. The organization is, however, more than a machine...It is more than economic, defined by results in the marketplace. The organization is, above all, 'social.' It is people. Its purpose must therefore be to make the strengths of people effective and their weaknesses irrelevant."
In this context, the editors divide this book into six parts. They write in their preface, "throughout the chapters in this book, the need for organizations is unquestioned. The authors provide a variety of forms and operating plans for organizations today and tomorrow; at the same time, each recognizes the indispensable role of organizations to human accomplishment and achievement."
Highly recommended.
Insightful!.......2001-05-15
Editors Frances Hesselbein, Marshall Goldsmith and Richard Beckhard present a series of short essays by 39 authors describing the structure of tomorrow's organizations. The essays, which are introduced by Peter Drucker, are organized into six main themes: shaping future organizations, new models for working and organizing, organizing for strategic advantage, working and organizing in a wired world, leading people in future organizations and understanding and improving organizational health. Given this approach and more than three dozen authors, some repetition is inevitable, so we [...] wonder if readers will prefer to dip in and choose articles that appeal to them the most. Generally, the book explicates broad trends in structural thinking, almost like a survey of organizational forecasting by top philosophers, authors and leaders in the field. This is sure to intrigue the executives charged with steering large organizations to and through this complex future.

Book Description
Entrepreneurship is a key factor in economic development. It determines how quickly and accurately an economic system identifies and responds to the profit opportunities inherent in disequilibrium situations. br This well-written book is the first to deal with entrepreneurship in all its aspects. It considers the economic, psychological, political, legal and cultural dimensions of entrepreneurship from a market-process perspective. David A Harper has produced a volume that analyses why some people are quicker than others in discovering profit opportunities. Importantly, the book also covers the issue of how cultural value systems orient entrepreneurial vision and in contrast to conventional wisdom, the book argues that individualist cultural values are not categorically superior to group oriented values in terms of their consequences for entrepreneurial discovery. br This stimulating and original book will be of great interest to development and market economists as well as their students. The policy implications for economic institutions that Harper concludes with will also make the book important reading for those working in the public sector.

Hodgepodge of conflicting positions.......2003-03-20
I read articles on this book for those are assigned in a graduate class. But far from the title implies, The class has no relationship with knowledge economy which is the buzzword in the business community. But this book was used to make us to be familiar with the concept of ¡®social capital.¡¯ Indeed this book tells less about knowledge but much more about social capital. Part I of this book contains introductory articles on the conception of the social capital and Part II lists real world application of the concept. 5 Articles of Part I voices cacophony, however. Reading through the articles only gives confusion to us. Nonetheless, it¡¯s inevitable and intentional for there is no consensus about the very basic conception. So editor deliberately put those conflicting perspectives in one volume. In turn, this way of editing reveals the fact that this book is not suitable to beginners. If you are already known to the word, social capital, reading through competing perspective doesn¡¯t baffle your nerves. But if you haven¡¯t heard the word at all, this book should not be recommended. Overall, the quality of articles is good enough. Indeed those are well-known ones. But if you want to see what the word, social capital at all, this is not your choice. If so, I recommend Nan Lin¡¯s ¡®Social Capital: A Theory of Social Structure and Action¡¯. This book does not only overview the various conflicting positions comprehensively, but also systematically define the concept from the network approach. In fact, Nan Lin is a eminent figure in the social network theory.

Book Description
In this incisive analysis of one of the most spectacular economic breakthroughs in the Deng era, Jean C. Oi shows how and why Chinese rural-based industry has become the fastest growing economic sector not just in China but in the world. Oi argues that decollectivization and fiscal decentralization provided party officials of the localities--counties, townships, and villages--with the incentives to act as entrepreneurs and to promote rural industrialization in many areas of the Chinese countryside. As a result, the corporatism practiced by local officials has become effective enough to challenge the centrality of the national state.
Dealing not only with the political setting of rural industrial development, Oi's original and strongly argued study also makes a broader contribution to conceptualizations of corporatism in political theory. Oi writes provocatively about property rights and principal-agent relationships and shows the complex financial incentives that underpin and strengthen the growth in local state corporatism and shape its evolution. This book will be essential for those interested in Chinese politics, comparative politics, and communist and post-communist systems.
Customer Reviews:
China's rural industrial miracle.......2000-04-26
In the 1990s, Dr. Oi wrote several journal articles detailing the crucial role of the local state in post-Mao China's economic development. This book is a long version based on her extensive field research.
China's explosive growth of rural industry raises considerable doubt about conventional wisdoms on property rights. Because these factories were collectively owned, they should have had all kinds of incentive problems. Yet, they were the engine of China's unusually rapid rural development from the mid-1970s through the mid-1990s. Dr. Oi explains how they accomplished this.
In the late 1990s, the overinvested TVE sector stalled and contracted, with many firms subsequently privatized to managers, which Dr. Oi discusses briefly in this work and expands on in the volume she co-edited _Property Rights and Economic Reform_. The causes and methods of privatization of TVEs is complex and has resulted in much academic literature, of which Susan Whiting's _Power and Wealth in Rural China: The Political Economy of Institutional Change_ was an early example.
People in development agencies should take notice of Oi's book, because the history of local state corporatism and community ownership of firms in the first 20 years of the reform era has important lessons for both growth and distribution.
