Living In Living Out.......2000-03-01
This book is a wonderful account of how African-American women made it at the turn of the century. I enjoyed reading how these women made a difference in the lives of the people and children in their families. This book showed me just how strong Black women are. It allowed me to see that they had the strength to go on and face any adversary that came into their lives. Any woman or person facing obstacles in their lives can pick up this book and know that they can makeit. That's what this book did for me. I know that there is nothing that I can't do. It's a book that I will one day want my now 10 year old daughter to rad and pass along to her daughter.
Book Description
Why have ninety million workers around the globe left their homes for employment in other countries? What can be done to ensure that international labor migration is a force for global betterment? This groundbreaking book presents the most comprehensive analysis of the causes and effects of labor migration available, and it recommends sensible, sustainable migration policies that are fair to migrants and to the countries that open their doors to them.
The authors survey recent trends in international migration for employment and demonstrate that the flow of authorized and illegal workers over borders presents a formidable challenge in countries and regions throughout the world. They note that not all migration is from undeveloped to developed countries and discuss the murky relations between immigration policies and politics. The book concludes with specific recommendations for justly managing the world’s growing migrant workforce.

Multi-faceted discussion of migration & its underlying factors.......2006-03-15
This was the first book read by me exclusively on immigration and a multi-faceted discussion on what contributes to the demand and supply of immigrants. The book also takes a look at some of the programs which were initiated by various nations in the US, Canada, Western Europe, Japan and Thailand at different points of time, what the expectations were when the programs were initiated and how they have eventually stood up on those expectations. A common failure of all the temporary worker programs is best summed up in a line from the book "There is nothing more permanent than temporary workers." Quite true. While governments and bureaucrats who frame the provisions of guest worker programs might expect that employers will register all their immigrant workers even when it takes them several months of wages to go through the whole registration process and immigrants themselves will return to their home nations after staying in the host nations for a few months, the realities are far more complex. With time, employers get used to having a virtually inexhaustible source of cheap and docile labor while the immigrants themselves get used to the higher wages and higher living standards of the host nations. As a remark on the very last page of the book makes clear: "What is worse than being exploited abroad? Not being exploited abroad."
The book overall is a serious read for someone who is interested in the topic of migration and the demand and supply conditions leading up to it. Not only does it offer different perspectives that are drawn from a wide range of nations over several decades, it also provides some interesting factoids that would be interesting to some. To mention just two: The total number of immigrant workers at about 90 million constitutes 3% of the global labor force. Yet another- While 60% of the migration is in the developed nations (about half of that in the US), the rest 40% of the immigration is in the developing nations such as Thailand which in the short span of a few decades turned from a net exporter of immigrants to a net exporter of immigrants.
Recommended for the serious reader and someone who is interested in how complex the realities of migration are.
Book Description
Post-Mao market reforms in China have led to a massive migration of rural peasants toward the cities. Officially denied residency in the cities, the over 80 million members of this "floating population" provide labor for the economic boom in urban areas but are largely denied government benefits that city residents receive. In an incisive and original study that goes against the grain of much of the current discussion on citizenship, Dorothy J. Solinger challenges the notion that markets necessarily promote rights and legal equality in any direct or linear fashion.
Customer Reviews:
Well-researched and Original.......2003-07-11
The floating population in China is a relatively new phenomenon, and this book contributes much to the literature, which has previously been most accessible in academic journals. The only thing holding me back from giving it 5 stars is its publication date...one year before the census in China. Updated statistics would be much appreciated, and are now available to Chinese scholars.
Thought-provoking.......1999-05-07
Dorothy Solinger's book is more than just an intelligent and well researched document about peasant migration in China today - she also offers a sympathetic and personal angle to the subject through accounts of her many personal interviews with the migrants themselves, as well as excerpts from primary sources. A thoroughly challenging read that is a must for anyone interested in the relationship between China's floating population, the state and society.

Book Description
The themes of migration and economic development are traditionally related. The debate on these issues has recently gained much relevance, particularly in Europe, as the phenomenon of migration tends to be seen as a possible consequence (and cause) of political and environmental unrest.
This volume is an important contribution to the move towards migration policies which increase total welfare, both in the host countries and in the countries of origin. It also explains problems specific to Europe and stresses the need for coordinated national policies.

Wiley Online Trading for a Living
When to get in-when to get out
Build, test & trade a winning system
Online brokers, research & market data
For those who are well suited to day trading and short-term trading, the futures market is one of the best games in town. As the original short-term vehicle, the futures market allows the trader to collapse the time frame in which he or she can reach the desired profit target-or pain threshold. As a result, wins and losses are compounded much more quickly than in stock trading-and, in the case of wins, often more profitably. The ability to gain leverage with very little on margin gives you, the trader, the ability to earn more off smaller swings. And enough home runs could allow you to become your own boss, work from home in your bathrobe, or even work from your cell phone while lying on the beach. So far, so good. But what does it take to win?
In Day Trade Futures Online, award-winning veteran futures trader Larry Williams gives a no-holds-barred view of the risks and rewards of this increasingly accessible arena. His straightforward approach to helping you determine your trading personality is the first step. Then he offers traders what they really need: strategies and tactics designed to beat the futures markets. From hardware and software setup to trading psychology and successful strategizing, this highly readable book covers all the bases needed to prepare you to trade online, including:
* Assessing your risk threshold
* Streamlining the glut of trading and price information to make it work for you
* The importance of knowing how to manage your money
* Choosing an online broker and utilizing other online resources, such as news, chat rooms, and message boards
* When to get out of your trades
* Building a system based on Larry's time-tested strategies
. . . and that's just for starters. Also included are an appendix of basic futures concepts and a select bibliography of some of the best learning resources. With good humor and brutal honesty, Williams guides you in building the trading system that will work best for you.
GET IN ON THE ORIGINAL SHORT-TERM GAME WITH BIG-TIME PROFITS
With unflinching honesty and decades of trading experience, award-winning veteran futures trader Larry Williams lends his expertise to the many aspects of futures trading online, including:
* Winning strategies
* Determining your trading personality
* The art of using the Internet
* Hardware and software solutions

Praise for Larry Williams and day trade futures online
"Larry Williams, the astute and experienced trader, has presented the reader with many computer-tested patterns that should give one an edge up in the hard world of day trading. He not only gives the patterns, he explains the 'why' of market action and what it takes to be successful from a psychological and money management standpoint. This is one of the best practical books ever written on trading by a veteran trader. Buy it."-John Hill, President, Futures Truth Co.
"Larry possesses an incredible talent to differentiate between what is important in life as well as in the markets. In his book, he shares insights into market behavior and short-term price dynamics that are useful to beginning and experienced traders alike. Whereas most day trading books merely discuss the market in generalities, Larry focuses on computer-tested techniques that can actually help make traders profitable. This is Larry at his best and finest!"-Tom DeMark, President, Market Studies Inc., author of New Science of Technical Analysis and New Market Timing Techniques
"Day Trade Futures Online is another must-have Larry Williams trading book. That's because nearly all the profitable futures traders I've known have attributed their trading success to an idea or concept learned from Larry. When Larry speaks, you better listen."-Gary Smith, author of How I Trade for a Living
Customer Reviews:
I can't believe that I'm writing this review.......2006-11-05
I'll not quibble between 4 and 5 stars. I agree with the reviewer below (Mr. Coffin) that I did not get the same results that Larry got when he did the studies -- and, FWIW, like Mr. Coffin, I used Trade Station.
Larry's attitude, which I choose to characterize as "test the hell out of your trading notions, then don't worry about a thing, cause nothin's gonna be all right" (with apologies to Mose Allison) is clearly correct.
The item of pre-eminent importance is that Larry said (as I recall) that Ralph Vince said (no slouch in these matters, Ralph) first profitable open works best as an exit strategy.
Or, "Get out of Dodge with the money before the Marshall figures out you've got the dough." Try to worry yourself to death during the holding period when your holding period is only long enough to eat dinner, then breakfast. My stress level has gone way down.
True enough, I'm not trading Larry's strategies. As a side note, I will say that the strategies worked pretty much as advertised up until a year or so before the book was published, more or less. I'm not nearly smart enough to know what changed. But I know that Larry follows the precept of testing, implementing, expecting the worst today with a long term outcome of winning.
So read the book, make up your own variations, test them, find those that back test well & forward test well. Trade those, make money, be happy, and devil take the hindmost.
Thanks, Larry.
He really trades.......2005-11-29
Most of the books on trading are written by unsuccessful traders or technicians who are frustrated traders, Larry Williams is one of the few great traders, who keeps trading and making money which shares his methods, strategies and thoughts in a book in a comprehensible way. Larry Williams is among the best and newbies and wannabes like me have to listen to him.
Shame .......2005-11-09
I do not know why he decided to recycle his "Long Term Secrets to Short Term Trading" book. He is selling the same old stuff in a new book with a different name. Even the examples and the explanations of his setups are word to word the same. Nothing new at all. No need to buy the book.
Updated Long-Term Secrets..........2004-08-26
Mr. Williams specializes in the S&P 500. You won't find a better or more proven trader than Mr. Williams. He is very generous with his techniques and trading methods, complete with well researched studies of successful trades. His ideas can also be applied to other trading vehicles. You can't lose reading any and all of Mr. William's books. Well worth the purchase price, as you are capturing over 35 years of successful and documented trading experience. This is the updated version of "Long-Term Secrets To Short-Term Trading", with some new material added.
Larry's system is weak compared to Toby Crabel's.......2004-04-23
Larry gives no meat in this weak thiny book.
If you really want to learn more- read Toby Crabels articles or books - much more informative and usefull.

Day trading such stocks as Amazon.com, eBay, and Yahoo! sounds like a game for the gun slinger: jump into the fray and pull the trigger. Is that really the case? No, according to author Christopher Farrell, who earns his money just as Wall Street does--by making very small, short-term, high-percentage trades. Farrell, who works from home, has traded over 15,000,000 shares of stock via the Internet, producing a 65 percent annual return for his investment fund in its first year. Using detailed, user-friendly examples, Farrell shows how to place orders online and then sell minutes later for small profits that can potentially add up to thousands of dollars a day--if you pick the right stocks. He explains how the New York Stock Exchange allows traders to buy on the bid and sell at the offer, just like the professionals. Farrell also includes loads of tips, such as how to choose an online broker, how much to pay for commissions, and how to cope with a technology that's still in its infancy. If you've been thinking about joining the estimated 5 million online traders, then this book is for you. --Thom Hartle

Customer Reviews:
you will not be a day trader if you read this book.......2007-09-11
The content of the book can be sumed as: In low volatility stocks, a day trader exploits the spread by using limit orders instead of market orders. In this way, the day trader trades with the market maker and makes teenie profit everyday.
This book tells it over 230 pages. It repeats himself many times. It was not useful. You had better choose another book.
help me I have fallen and I can't Get up!!!!.......2007-08-29
This book is had way to me fractions for me!
But 1/8 this, Buy 1/9 this, sell 5/10 that
WHO IS THE AUTHOR TRYING TO ATTRACT AS READERS!
Also the author tells you not to do home work, Sorry people but even a day trader should now whats going on in the market. You invest time knowing your trade (profession) and no matter if I choose to be a day trader or long term investor, I believe you must know your profession and how it works.
I do not recommend this book to beginners or mild investors wanting to day trade. This book is for someone???? Well I am sure it is for someone, just not me. AND I DO MAKE MONEY DAY TRADING!
Motivational.......2006-11-11
After reading the book, I was so motivated to go and make money. However when I went to trade I discovered that the spread is so thin ! A cent for that matter. Has the rules changed or am I doing something wrong?
The Concepts are cool even if they be tricky..........2006-04-02
Christopher's strong suit is not concise writing. The repetition may push you over the edge but if you can hang with it, you will get several insights about the inside of the market. I've been trading for a little over a year but have not yet attempted this method. I'm sure that even in 2006 it will work but it will be more work than when the book was written.
I think one of the most important contributions this books makes is the insight it provides to the 'specialist.' That's a guy that we all need to know about, whether we're trading teenies or pennies!!
It's a CRIME that this book is still for sale........2006-03-19
The publishers should be sued. Maybe we should get a class-action together.
Imagine taking an instruction manual for the very first Apple computer and putting a new title on it "How to use your new home computer" and selling it in bookstores today. This book is doing EXACTLY that!
Also, it is highly doubtful that the tactic ever worked in the first place. The author's website vanished years ago. In a thinly traded NYSE stock if you try to repeatedly front the specialist with 2000 share orders he will simply move the price 50 cents against you immediately following your next purchase. Game over.
