Book Description
Job hunting is a different ballgame when you’re holding a pink slip instead of a brand-new college diploma. In
Landing on the Right Side of Your Ass, Michael B. Laskoff—a Harvard M.B.A. who has flown high and flamed out more than once—offers essential advice for those of us who have recently been laid off, restructured, or plain ol’ fired. A tell-it-like-it-is bible of “reemployment,” it tackles both the practical and the emotional issues of job loss.
Because he’s not an academic, a recruiter, or a human resources professional, Laskoff has no ax to grind, no philosophy to peddle, and no corporate ideology to support. He’s been through the job-loss/job-search drill more than once, and since he consistently has gone on to do better in terms of compensation, responsibility, and job satisfaction, he’s the perfect ex-employee to share with you some hard-won wisdom, such as:
•How long to wait before launching yourself into the job arena
•How to channel anger, fear, and revenge fantasies into useful job-search tactics
•How to snag recommendations (and compensation) from ex-bosses
•How to determine your interviewers’ hiring problems and then present yourself as the solution
Whether you’re concerned about the emotional issues of unemployment (from denial and depression to anger and acceptance) or are looking for invaluable nuts-and-bolts advice (what to say about your ex-employer in an interview, how to handle financial issues, and what on earth you should do with all that free time between jobs),
Landing on the Right Side of Your Ass is a straight-up, no-chaser survival guide for picking yourself up, getting back out there again, and winding up with a job that’s better than the one you lost.

Not A Long-Term Solution .......2006-05-09
I agree with one of the other reviewers on this site who asks,"What if you land on the wrong side of your ass? I found this book didn't adequately address the reality of the unemployed situation. I had much better luck with a book on this site called "Unemployment Boot Camp: Tactics for Suriving and Thriving in the 21st Century," by R.A. Long. It offers a lot of suggestions for empowering yourself and acknowledges that you can be unemployed for long periods of time. The books' premise is to gear up for the long haul. "Unemployment Boot Camp" makes a substantial case for implementing physical exercise as a means of strengthening your survival skills and looks at the reality of your job-search taking longer than you'd expect. But it also provides candid objectives and options for sustaining yourself until that next golden opportunity comes around.
Good book with a bad title.......2006-03-12
I wanted to recommend this book to my ezine list, but had to hold back. The title would have gotten us tossed off every ISP on the planet. It's misleading anyway. Laskoff is down-to-earth and realistic but not at all profane or over the top.
The author's own job loss stories are laugh-aloud funny. For the most part, his advice is right-on. I especially like the sections on getting a nonprofessional life outside your career - something I've been advising my own career change clients all along.
Other great sections include "Things to do before the resume," which has a realistic discussion of finances. And I liked the interview section, especially the section on interviews that were doomed from the start. The networking advice is sound and complete: nothing new and some folks will have more trouble than others, often due to circumstances beyond their control.
I was a little concerned about Laskoff's advice to remove short-length jobs, as this strategy occasionally backfires.
A more serious omission: Laskoff doesn't help readers choose among the many resources now available for help. And personally I was a little turned off by the "confession" exercise and confused by the term "self-interview."
These days a savvy job-hunter needs to know how to choose a career coach, consultant or counselor, which means reading between the lines on a website. Barbara Ehrenreich's book, Bait and Switch, should be considered fair warning. It's a rare job-hunter who isn't tempted at least once.
But no book can be 100% complete. I wrote my own downloadable guide and I would still recommend Laskoff's as an additional resource. Job hunters could do a lot worse.
What if I've landed on the wrong side of my ass?.......2005-06-05
This book is basically about avoiding depression so you aren't dead meat on the job search highway. Personally, it was encouraging to find a loudmouth from Harvard MBA school was going through many of the same things I was going through after emerging from slightly lesser ranking Indiana MBA school before getting sucked up into the world of 'infinite future' telecom consulting, and sucked down by an equally weighty 'nothing available right now' telecom crash. I have landed on the wrong side of my ass. My salary went from $100K to $20K. And the ONLY material out there I can find is on how to do all the things I've already done: networking, resumes, interview prep, etc. No one gets it. No one wants to get it.
What this book did not help me come to terms with, which is really what I still want to come to terms with, is how to maintain optimism over a longer horizon. How to recover from depression once it hits, rathern than feigning optimism to yourself through a hardly affordable hedonism. Sometimes, particularly after a brutal series of experieces like several layoffs in a number of years while a market is crashing, depression wins. And if you get depressed. Are you dead forever irrespective of your abilities? Seems so. Once you lose your enthisiam, no matter how badly you feel treated, you lose your right to work.
I'm still looking for the book on what no one still wants to talk about. What if you didn't get work again in 6 months, than 12, than 24, than became underemployed because you needed the money? Where do you recover that sense of enthusiasm and hope again. That, to me, seems to be the real battle to stay on the right side of your ass.
I imagine I am not the only one out there that feels this way.
"Landing On The Right Side Of Your Ass" is a lifesaver!!!!.......2005-03-16
I wish I had known about and bought this book 2 months ago when I was "fired" (for the first time in 30 years of working!!). It's essential in surviving unemployment. It's funny, sharp, urbane and touches on all the "untouchable" subjects - blaming your employer, blaming yourself, taking a vacation before beginning job hunting, how to talk to friends and family, and so forth. It discussed all the subjects I couldn't talk about to anyone, and helped me feel sane and centered in the midst of a very trying time.
I highly recommend this book, which I have worn out two highlighters while reading!
A True Guide.......2005-01-10
Michael Laskoff's book was immensely helpful in all the stages I faced as an laid off, unemployed worker. The chapters on "Getting Dumped" helped me evaluate my behavior and how it contributed to the unfortunate outcome. Once I admitted that I had some responsibility for that outcome, I was able to put the negative experience behind me and move into the job search mode. His guidelines for resumes and the interview process were terrific and led to success: I got three job offers! Then the tips on offers and negotiation were helpful. I especially appreciated his candid admissions of his own employment history, making me feel I was not the only one to have traveled this road.
Book Description
Unemployment is unquestionably one of life's most stressful and difficult experiences, and it happens to virtually everyone at least once during the course of their working lives. It is a time of uncertainty and transition-but it can also be a time to learn, grow, and seriously examine the direction of one's life. Break Time: Nourishing Yourself Through Unemployment provides practical solutions for the roller coaster of experiences that people have from the day a job is lost to the day a promising new one is found. Authors Jim Stringham and David R. Workman show you how to take advantage of newly found "free" time and learn important new skills, like how to accomplish the following: Escape video game overdose Face Black Monday (and Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, etc.) Have fun for little or no money Keep loved ones sane while you are jobless Rid yourself of resentment Explain job loss to children Set a financial plan Break Time provides helpful information on how to take care of you while unemployed, and offers suggestions on dealing with feelings of isolation, keeping a sense of humor, maintaining self-esteem, and feeling more comfortable with a temporarily lower standard of living. Break Time will be the most important book you read while out of work. James Stringham, Ph.D., holds a master's degree in social work and a doctorate in psychology. He has been a mental health practitioner for more than a decade. In addition to managing a full-time practice, he founded the Wealth and Wellness Consulting Group that assists financial institutions, law firms, and owner-managed businesses with client and asset retention programs. He lives in Salt Lake City, Utah. David Workman holds a master's degree in public administration. After working for more than seven years at the Utah Department of Environmental Quality in their Office of Planning and Public Affairs, he joined the Salt Lake Organizing Committee for the Olympic Winter Games of 2002 as the Environment Programs Manager. He lives in Petaluma, California.

Unemployment Sure Doesn't Feel Nourishing.......2006-05-06
As a graduate student in communications, I've been doing research for a paper on unemployment. As a result, I've purchased and read a number of different books on the subject including "The Unemployment Survival Guide" and "Unemployment Boot Camp:Tactics for Surviving and Thriving in the 21st Century." While both books offer some very practical insights into maintaining a positive outlook during difficult times, I found "Unemployment Boot Camp" by R.A. Long to be the more realistic and practical of the two. The "nourishing meal" concept left me hungry for something with more teeth whereas the boot camp theme in "Unemployment Boot Camp" is a great device to incorporate into a handbook on unemployment. And with it's chapters aptly and cleverly referred to as "Missions" and other military references throughout, "Unemployment Boot Camp is a little dynamo of a book.
The Unemployment Survival Guide.......2006-04-05
I did enjoy reading "The Unemployment Survival Guide" but the theme of a nourishing meal seems contrived. How can being unemployed be nourishing? However, I found another book titled, "Unemployment Boot Camp" by R.A. Long to be much more true-to-life; whereas being unemployed is no picnic and at times may feel more like boot camp.
Very Helpful, Uplifting and Practical.......2005-12-20
This book is extremely well-written and practical for the individual between jobs. This book gives great examples on how to deal with every situation you may be faced with in regards to being unemployed. Most of us will be unemployed at one time and this book works to address the mental aspects in being unemployed and helping the unemployed maintain a positive outlook as they search for their next job. I work in the employment industry and recommend this book to anyone who may be recently unemployed!!
Cooking Up Opportunities.......2005-05-14
"Life is often filled with obstacles and uncertainty. But failure in life is only when we view our hardships as stumbling blocks rather than stepping-stones toward new experiences and personal growth."
According to Jim Stringham and David R. Workman, the average worker stays in the same job for about 3 ½ years. Many would leave sooner, but a job search can be more stressful than staying.
The authors have decided on a cooking theme and this book includes the following chapters:
Nourish Your Mind - Looking at the problems of the world puts a new spin on your unemployment issues. Suddenly after reading: "Do you have a non-dirt floor where you live?" puts it all in perspective. If you have a refrigerator, you are among the world's top 5 percent of lucky individuals.
A Bowl of Inspiration - The authors list all the reasons why your life isn't really falling apart. After all, you have a computer or at least have access to one, the authors note. This chapter reminds me of lists of things to be grateful for if you are suffering from depression.
Health - Maintaining a daily structure even when under stress. Not wanting to deal with everyday life can be a common symptom of unemployment. There are lists of things to do when you are not looking for work, like taking yoga or dancing classes. Helpful information for those addicted to the Internet.
Finances- Ideas for increasing cash flow and saving money on regular bills. Simple things like filling your gas tank with cheaper gas or canceling cable TV. The authors ask questions about "What is real wealth" and help you to see all the beauty in your life even without a job.
Homemade Goodness - Now you have time to clean out the closets, organize the garage or e-mail long lost friends. Also, information on how to tell your family you are now unemployed. The authors discuss moving back with your parents for a short time or other living arrangement options.
Condensed Ingredients - How to deal with not being able to afford socializing as much with friends and family. Where can you find supportive friends to help you make it through this time in your life and should you do volunteer work while looking for a job.
Soup Up Your Future - How do you make the best of being overqualified? Should you customize your resume?
Instant Success - Should you take a break from job hunting and take a vacation? Lists of free activities and 10 survival tips for the unemployed shopper.
If you are employed when you read this book, there are many helpful suggestions about participating more fully in your current life. If you are unemployed, then this book will give you information on how to use the time between jobs in a creative way. Through nurturing yourself, you will at least be happier during the interviews and you won't withdraw from society.

A Helpful Guide to Anyone.......2004-09-03
After a 2002 downsizing from the original long distance phone company, I still do not have permanent employment or benefits.
I recently picked up Kathy's book again after 2 years. It is just as helpful to me today as it was then.
She has comforted me as though I met with her in person. She identifies with my feelings and circumstance - there is no "put on".
Kathy's ability to write from her heart and experiences are useful in my journey for "life work".
Enjoy it, I do. I can read it again and again now, remembering that someone knows exactly what it's like to be unemployed and over the age limit.(smile)

Gods of ancient Crete.......2001-06-25
You want /good/ temping advice, go to notmydesk.com
You want pure dreck, buy this.
Have Fun -- Will Work!.......1999-02-09
This is hilarious!!
Not only is temping the best way to make a living, as I've now found out, but this is the best way to learn about it! It's super funny, but it also goes through all the steps one-by-one. I brought it with me to the job interview with certain pages marked and it kept me in the right frame of mind before I interviewed -- and I aced it! I've been working ever since. I still carry it around with me in my bag like a dog-eared security blanket!
Anyway, if you have any doubts at all about temping, this will alleviate them and get you working immediately. Or at least it did for me!
Write on!
Too cute for its own good.......1999-01-28
Hasset has some unbelieveably good and comforting things to say. I'm temping in New York right now and, after reading the book, feel much better about it.
The humor, however, was too much: humor should be a spice to delicately flavor instead of a sauce to drown.
Too many asides: too many jabs in the ribs and knowing winks. Get on with it already!
Some segments were so downright poorly written and confusing I had to go back and read them two times to figure out what he was getting at.
I did like that he wrote from a temp's view instead of a client's. He understands that there's a lot we'd rather be doing at work than working. He shows how to get around it. It's great.
Loved IT !!! One of the BEST BOOKS (Funniest) I'VE EVER READ.......1998-11-04
This book will have you in stitches.
He's got a line in there, "What .. reading a book on temping. What will you read next .. a book on how to catch a bus." Well, it is pretty close to that one.
Don't read this book if you are steadily employed and are thinking about quitting your job .. because the author makes temping sound too appealing and YOU WILL QUIT YOUR JOB!
This is a GREAT BOOK if you FIND YOURSELF IN THIS SITUATION. He sort of skips over some big areas like the fact that despite discrimination laws, clients suggest .. er hint, most of the time they want females (95% of the time) etc. etc. And also the fact that there's a lot of kissing up to get work. If you don't have ace computer skills, a people personality, persistance and the ability to pucker-up .. well then, maybe this isn't the occupation for you.
Wise, witty and wonderfully written.......1998-06-20
This is a great book -- full of wise observations and witty anecdotes, written in lucid, entertaining prose. A triumph for the hourly wage earner!

The Business Planning manual for Developed Economies ?.......2001-09-04
The book is very brilliant and I can definitely use it in London, where I have a small consultancy business and use the internet for E-Commerce.
Secondly, because of the low interest rate of 6-7%, I can secure a loan to buy PCs for my office.
With the usage of an accounting application and spreadsheet, I can make quick financial statements and be in control of the business.
I cannot be that lucky in Ghana, if I were now starting up.
I run an application software development company, and I have connected by PC to the internet.
In Ghana, interest rates are high at about 45-50%
Internet technology is available but skilled labour is limited
Incomes are generally low; the minimum daily wage is about 70 cents and limits the market
The majority of Africa faces similar situations to that of Ghana.
In conclusion, I wish to suggest that a chapter is added to the book to discuss business planning in technologially disadvantaged economies like Ghana, to formulate a business planning manual without the use of the relatively expensive PC so the potential African entrepreneur can also have something to read from.
