Book Description
With the story of one American family--the Vickerys of Unity, Maine--Andrea Hawkes tells the history of our country and explores the power of connections, beginning with the first generation of Vickerys from England who founded Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1634, then following the fifth generation to the District of Maine just before the American Revolution as they extended the family network from Cape Elizabeth, east to Calais, and north to Unity where succeeding generations thrived for the next two hundred years. In the late 1800s the ninth generation of Vickerys expanded the family network in Maine across the United States to the Montana and Wyoming borderlands, and their stories of pioneer ranching and mining mirror the entrepreneurial spirit of their colonial ancestors.
Drawing in part from the extensive genealogical research of the late James B. Vickery III, Hawkes shapes a continuum of family stories that is richly peopled and finely detailed. From peril and tragedy in Puritan fishing communities, to "following a trail of spotted trees through the woods" to Unity, to the experiences and attitudes of women on remote sheep ranches in Montana, Hawkes keeps a keen historian's eye on the facts while weaving a fascinating tale.
Customer Reviews:
American History told through a Family.......2006-08-21
Andrea Constantine Hawkes has done a wonderful job of describing New England social history through the lens of a family, the Vickerys. The Vickery history starts with fishermen in Massachusetts Bay who later settle in a farming community in mid state Maine, Unity. It is the most reader friendly geneology I've read as Ms. Hawkes weaves the events of the day into the story of 10 generations. I particularly enjoyed the "detour" to Montana, where one branch of the Vickerys ( and Unity, Maine) settled.
I recommend the book for non professional readers of New England history who want a glimpse into the life of our ancestors.

From the supplier: Montana's tourist industry has slowed down in 1996 after posting excellent records for 1995. A survey conducted by the Institute for Tourism and Recreation Research in Dec. 1996 showed a 41% decline in visitations. The primary reason cited was weather which was followed by gas prices, economic conditions, marketing and advertising, and the Canadian exchange rate. Nevertheless, the tourism and recreational industry is projected to make a turnaround due to expansion and renovation plans indicated by respondents in the survey.

From the supplier: The federal Supreme Court will hear an important case involving the sovereignty of Indian tribes under federal Indian law and state taxation. The case stems from state/county taxes paid by Westmoreland Resources Inc for operating the Absoluka Mine in Montana. The Crow Tribe argued in a suit against Montana that the taxes on the mine were preempted by federal Indian law. The tribe was upheld by the appellate and Supreme Court. The tribe is now suing to collect $58.2 million in taxes paid by Westmoreland, plus hundreds of millions of dollars in pre-judgement interest.

Book Description
No state in America suits the Hidden guides' philosophy better than Montana. Still relatively untouched by mega-resorts, tourist-packed traffic jams, and ersatz ski villages, Montana offers friendly travel facilities nestled in lost expanses of wilderness. Since 96% of all visitors drive into the state, the author carefully maps out the state's many highways and country roads while describing the adventures found along the way. Hidden Montana covers historical attractions like the battlefield where General Custer made his infamous "last stand" and describes numerous ghost towns where Old West legends haunt abandoned buildings. It then leads readers through the state's American Indian reservations with helpful advice on how to both enjoy and honor Native American culture. This guidebook shows the way to over 70 parks, reserves, and wilderness areas. Truly two guides in one, Hidden Montana serves as both a travel guide and an outdoor adventure handbook. Veteran travel writer John Gottberg Anderson recommends dozens of small inns where the proprietors combine modern comforts with outdoor activities such as wildlife viewing, fishing, and biking. Detailed reviews of Montana's best outdoor outfitters for river running, downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, horseback riding, and even pack trips are included.
Customer Reviews:
Hidden Montana.......2007-08-01
This book was a wonderful guide to the areas of Montana we traveled through. There were several things we would not have seen if it hadn't been for the suggestions in the book and some excellent restaurants we wouldn't have stopped at if they had not been recommended by the book. We plan to get another "hidden" book for our next trip.
Covers inns, tours, drives, and outdoors explorations.......2001-09-12
Hidden Montana appears in its third edition to cover inns, tours, drives, and outdoors explorations throughout the state. From Glacier Park to Yellowstone, this is packed with lesser-known byways. Recommended.
Excellent layout and variety of content........1998-09-02
Braeking the state up into sections, the author does an excellent job of describing and presenting the various highlights of each. Equal treatment is given to popular and off-the-beaten-path areas, with sufficient detail for each. It made my recent visit more enjoyable!

Customer Reviews:
Not for beginners and not for professionals.......2007-05-03
It is hard to tell who this book is geared towards. A novice should not take on any event that is as over their head; as most of the event situations that are listed in the book are. A professional would know from experience the answers to most of the questions or they would have the common sense to take care of any odd situation that arose. The book may be helpful to assistant managers or banquet captains, but most houses have their own way of doing things. Interesting read and a good refresher, buy used.
Very useful Hand Book.......2007-03-10
It was very useful to me as I used it to brak into the wedding/event business. It presents a very corporate approach, yet it seems to uncover all kinds of secrets of the event world that are hidden to the public eye.
This Book is Alright.......2006-08-09
Being an avid reader of Event Planning literature, I must say that this book is alright.
Packed with Knowledge!.......2005-10-14
Details, details, details. That's really what successful event planning is all about, and that's the key to this very successful event-planning manual. Author Judy Allen notes, lists, copes with and gives an example of virtually every detail in planning anything from a sedate corporate event in a major city to a huge celebration on a remote island. She provides examples galore plus tips, questions and answers, sample cost sheets and schedules. How much floor space does a person need to be comfortable in a tent? Answer: 20 square feet. How many bathrooms should be available for a party? Answer: One per 75 guests. And don't forget to ask about the stemware, adequate parking and even the photographer's back-up camera battery. This author seems to have thought every contingency, as the book's ambitious title promises. Her one glaring omission is that she does not include the party planner's fee - our guess is that she'd be worth it. We highly recommend this well-organized, very practical book to all event planners. Don't send out press releases for your party without consulting Judy Allen.
Great book.......2005-10-01
This is a great book for anyone interested in working in the event planning field.
