I bought several similar reference books at the time of this purchase. Effective Business Writing is my go-to book, my first choice, and usually all I need.

4 out of 5 stars Great reference book - - timely, too!.......1999-04-22

This is a well-written, carefully organized book that belongs on desks across America! Topics covered include organizing before writing, overcoming writer's block, suiting letters to complex situations, and using grammar and punctuation properly. If I had to provide one criticism, it would only be that the book is too short! As a reader, I didn't tire of the useful sample letters and would have happily read more and more. A great reference for the tentative writer and a good refresher for seasoned writers, as well.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Excellent instructional reference.......2000-10-19

Loud and Clear is an outstanding resource for producing an effective presentation. The emphasis on audience analysis, which is so often overlooked, is excellent and will lead you to focus on the things that matter for your presentation. I especially liked the exercises suggested by the authors. Do them; you will learn more about your style of communication and your ability to connect with audiences than you had ever imagined. This book is probably most effective for newer presenters who need a foundation in the building blocks of assembling an effective presentation. But, it will also be instructional and valuable to check the effectiveness of more experienced presenters. Overall Loud and Clear is a concise, well-written recipe for effective presentations

    Book Description

The Murphy book gives strong emphasis to completeness, conciseness, consideration, concreteness, clearness, courteousness, and correctness in business communication. These "seven Cs" guide student-readers to choose the content and style that best fits the purpose and recipient of any given message. Pedagogically rich, most chapters in this paperback text include checklists, mini-cases and problems, "Communication Probe" boxes which summarize related research, and sidenotes that isolate significant points that should not be missed. Two new chapters are devoted to ethics and technology respectively.

5 out of 5 stars Complete and In-depth.......2001-08-16

This is not one of those books filled with pep talks and exhortations to overcome stage fright or thinly veiled Toastmaster "how to". It's about the realities of delivering technical presentations as either the speaker or the coordinator of a presentation. To be sure, it does address some of the basics, such as how to clarify your message with an outline, dealing with hostile audiences, and how to create effective visual aids that reinforce your message.

What sets this book apart, though, is the way the author addresses the logistical issues, which can be a coordinator's nightmare. The advice given is born of experience and enduring the last minute pressures of getting on a plane to do an unplanned presentation the next morning. As life would have it, such events depend on luck and demonstration equipment or software functioning perfectly. As Murphy's Law would have it, these events age one rapidly. But the author thoroughly covers all of the issues and factors, including scheduling and logistics and how to coordinate the complexities of preparing the site. He also goes into minute details of site selection and optimum room layout, audience (and speaker) comfort and safety and coordinating multiple speakers. Here is an example of the level of detail the book goes into, showing how well thought out the material is: managing speaking events in multilingual audiences or guest speakers requiring translators.

To a presenter this book is valuable; to an event coordinator or road-warrior presenter this book is a jewel. It covers topics and situations you rarely think of until you've been embarrassed a few times, and is clearly and cleverly written.

4 out of 5 stars Some good, some bad.......2001-08-04

The writer of this book appropriately acknowledges the fact that you cannot learn to present from a book. Like many other things it is a matter of practice makes perfect. So, if you are interested in this book because you are "scared"/unsure etc. of an upcoming presentation, this book will not teach you how to do it. However, this book will make you aware of some of the good and bad practices.

In the preface of the book the author mentions that the growth in computer projection equipment and the accompanying software that enables the creation of the so called "slide shows" may lead to the impression that everything is done by the computer. In this book he effectively shows that that is not the case.

The book commences in Chapters 2 and 3 by stressing the importance of planning your talk. Knowing what you want to say and who the audience will be. It emphasises planning the overall structure of the talk.

Chapters 4 and 5 are appropriately dedicated to the use of visual aids. It stresses the importance of getting the message to the audience. From this perspective it provides sensible useful guidelines for people whose artistic capabilities may not be well developed. Practical aspect of letter sizing and color usage is presented - mistakes in this regard, which I see made in presentations at all levels, are pointed out. These two chapters will probably shed interesting light on certain issues even for reasonably experienced presenters. The only "factor" that I could find that is not addressed in these chapters is the excessive use of animation which certain computer software "impose" on you. Therefore if a section that builds on the statement "Don't use animation unless there is a specific reason why it would aid in getting the message across..." is added, I would be happy that it is the most complete way in which this topic is addressed in one single source.

Chapter 6 specifically deals with "new" presentation technology. It mentions several issues that pertain specifically to computer-based presentations. This is the one chapter were the book could probably be bettered, especially for people wanting to read specifically about these kinds of presentations. To get value from this chapter one probably needs to read the previous chapters as well. As such the book loses a bit of its potential as "reference" material. It is, however, still very much worthwhile if you read the book as a unit.

The rest of the book deals with a variety of issues deals with aspects such as different kinds of room layouts, different kinds of presentations etc. It fails, however, to make a link between how these would change the presentation. If the latter part of the book receives attention and do a bit more than just mention these issues much value can be added. This part of the book is probably responsible for its 4-rating. If I were to evaluate Chapters 1 - 6 and 7 - 11 separately it would probably receive 5 and 3 stars respectively.

The appendices provide some evaluation forms for the different types of meetings, which could save you some experimentation.

In general the book is a good buy for people with no or little experience in making presentations - applying and thinking carefully about some of the suggestions may help you avoid mistakes by raising awareness. However, even experienced presenters could probably get value out of the book by measuring their existing way of doing against chapters 3 - 6.

5 out of 5 stars Without question the BEST Labor Economics text ever!.......2002-12-19

This is truly an amazing work, which shows so many models of labor market phenomena at the undergraduate level that an undergraduate's economics education is incomplete without it. This book is essential reading for both undergraduates and policymakers who want to learn labor economics, economics in general, or have a deeper understanding of public policy issues. The best features are its unmatched explanations of human capital models, labor market discrimination models, and labor union models -- which will change the way you think of these issues and give deeper understanding. The book is both concise, deep, a quick and fun read, and makes Nobel-prize winning material accessible to any undergraduate or policy maker.

4 out of 5 stars All about Labor Economics.......2001-07-30

George Borjas in this book deal the basic of de Labor Economics, it's very usefull for the pre-grade student and it's preleminary to introduce in the labor world (academic). It's good but it's necesary to complement with anothers advanced books for a improve vision.

                    Book Description

This book brings together up-to-date findings on the regional dimensions of European labour markets. It provides a conceptual and empirical study of the interactions between the European economy and its regions, paying particular attention to the issue of the transition of Central and Eastern European countries to a market economy. The topics analysed include: the structure of the shocks affecting employment (regional, industrial, national), the relationships between labour market efficiency and the regional distribution of unemployment, wage flexibility in EU member countries or in their regions and the role of active labour market policies in affecting the regional distribution of employment and unemployment.

                      Book Description

The plight of women in post-reform Russia has its roots in the combination of the new market system and the old legacy of discrimination. The Soviet Union was the first country to give women equal rights and equal pay, but this was not carried through in practice. This is the first study to apply modern econometrics to survey-data collected in the USSR. Analysis of data from Russia shows how legislative equality hid actual discrimination. Katz also challenges the conventional wisdom that, for ideological reasons, Soviet manual workers were favored over the highly educated. Gender, Work and Wages in the Soviet Union includes a critical survey of economic theories of gender and wages and the Soviet wage system. The final chapter brings the debate up to date by examining how old and new mechanisms of gender inequality interact in post-Soviet Russia.

                          Book Description

This timely volume discusses the extent to which the labor market is becoming more flexible in response to competitive pressures and examines the pivotal roles of collective bargaining in introducing this flexibility.

Providing detailed information from 22 country studies, the book covers industrialized and developing nations across Western Europe, North and South America, and Asia. It analyzes the extent of flexibility introduced in these labor markets, as well as the changing role of the state in industrial relations, and the positions of employers and trade unions on labor market flexibility. This comprehensive study reviews the move toward flexibility in four principal areas: contracts of employment, pay, working time, and work organization.

While closely examining the means of achieving greater labor market flexibility, this highly topical book addresses the various ways in which flexibility has been introduced, including through legislative action, collective bargaining, individual contracts of employment, and unilateral employer decisions. The findings in this book reveal that collective bargaining is the most effective means of introducing flexibility, as it engages both employers and workers in the process of change.

In addition, the volume examines the outcomes of negotiations on flexibility at the central, sectoral, and enterprise levels, paying special attention to the trade-offs that arise, particularly in the areas of job security, working time, and workers' lifestyles.

From the supplier: A game theory to analyze negotiations between labor unions and employers was developed, in which both parties act simultaneously and have the power to deviate. Results showed that wage hikes are more likely to occur when both parties believe that negotiations are about to end. Moreover, wage-employment paths tend to be steeper in cases where both parties exercise greater power to deviate.
