5 out of 5 stars Technical Analysis 101.......2007-09-01

In "Chart Your Way To Profits", Tim Knight takes the intricacies of Edwards & Magee technical analysis, and updates it in a conversational, user-freindly format. Hundreds of real-life chart examples are utilized, as are trading tips from a veteran individual trader. This is a book where new insights can be gleaned with multiple readings, and one you will want to keep by your computer for constant reference while analyzing stock charts, and during trading hours.
You don't have to use Prophet Charts to get great value from this book, but if you do, the book doubles as the best 400+ page user's manual you could ever ask for. And for those who don't know, the Prophet charting platform is available with certain online brokers without having to pay for it.
Definitely five stars, and highly recommended for any level trader.

4 out of 5 stars Good book but too much "How to use Prophet Software"........2007-08-29

I agree, with last reviewer how to use the Prophet Software within the pages of the book. The author should have placed all the Prophet advertising, subscriber to the author's charting website, how to use the software toward the back section of the book. I never use Prophet software since there are many other professional charting software out there that does even a better job than just using website charts.

This book has some good easy to follow information on charting that can be useful and is quite simple to understand.

A better book to purchase is "Technical Analysis of Stock Trends" by Robert D. Edwards and John Magee ,since this is the best book on charting and charting patterns which was originally published back in 1948. This is like the bible of Technical Analysis. I prefer the 5th Edition and you may be able to get it used on amazon.

5 out of 5 stars Dedicated too much to Prophet, but a good value, nonetheless.......2007-08-27

This book is written primarily for use with the author's charting software (Prophet) and spends quite a bit of time highlighting it's features. When he starts to explain the chart patterns and the reasons the market created that pattern, you could be using any software. This is where the book shines.

Roughly 1/3 of the book explains Prophet Charts. Basically a manual. That part should be available online to users of the software.

Once you get past the manual, and the chart analysis begins, there is a lot of value. Tim explains chart patterns in a simple, (relatively) jargon free manner. Every topic has several examples to make it very clear. He also explains the reason the pattern came into existence in the first place, adding even more clarity to the topic. I found this part to be very useful.

I feel this book is suited to anyone who uses Prophet Charts, but that info should have been included with the software. Paying for the manual irked me a bit. I did find value in the charts, and assuaged my irritation with my increased knowledge and comfort with technical analysis. Definitely worth it, just be aware.

5 out of 5 stars Chart Your Way to Profits.......2007-08-26

I bought this book in order to learn how to use the Prophet Charting Tools. The book provided an excellent and clear summary for this purpose.
Aside from this application, Knight's explanations provide very useful background for understanding how to exploit the bear side of the market, which tends to be favored by Knight. If you are uncomfortable in investing on the short side but want to learn more, this is a good place to begin.

          Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Nothing new. Basic knowledge for long term trading.......2007-08-12

This book shows methods for trend following long term trading.

There is nothing new in it. If you have already read for example "Trade your way to financial freedom" (a much better read by the way), you will learn about nothing in this book.

The style of the book is quite academic but all presented things are extremely simple. Everything is very much detailed with obvious formulas or repeating the same stuff for the short side (exactly symmetric) after having been explained for the long side, perhaps in order to reach the critical number of 200 pages for the book.

I wonder what is the motivation for this book since there is nothing new. A result of the Wiley Trading frenzy to publish?

          1 out of 5 stars Disappointing-save your money.......2007-02-20

Too academic and nothing new to add to material that is already out there. Not that practical from a swing trader's point of view.

3 out of 5 stars This is a hard read........2007-01-29

I found this book to be difficult to read. I didn't think the book was well organized or well written. I often found myself rereading sections and starting the book over. It was hard to understand some of the information not because it was complicated, but because it just wasn't written clearly.

I would not recommend this for the novice investor. There are better books out there.

          5 out of 5 stars Worthwhile.......2007-01-03

I read this book over Christmas break, initially thinking that I had picked up yet another tome that amateur traders would find entertaining, but which would contain little useful information about the actual details of trading.

I quickly realized that Trend Trading was no ordinary book. It is literally packed with trading details, from its in-depth explanation of trend trading and money management tactics to its exposition on the psychological experience during different stages of trading.

What a privilege for us that Kedrick took the time to write this book after 8 years in the markets. A truly worthwhile read

5 out of 5 stars Specific ideas for beginners and serious traders.......2006-11-24

Systems traders have long been known to employ profitable trend following strategies in the futures markets. Applying those concepts to stock trading has proven to be difficult, although the idea of trend following in stock markets dates back at least the days of Charles Dow. In a new
book, Kedrick Brown, a former vice president at Knight Equity Markets, LP, redefines trend trading and offers readers a lot to think about, and readers of this book will find a large number of testable ideas.

Brown reviews the basic tenets of Dow Theory, and summarizes the underlying idea as, "Dow Theory thus assumes that it is only worth
owning stocks during confirmed bull markets in the major indices, and that one should be out of stocks otherwise." He also offers a straightforward definition of a trend following trading strategy as, "Any preplanned, rule-based strategy for managing open position P&L in which open profits could hypothetically grow indefi nitely under a limited
set of circumstances, while open losses are limited under all circumstances."

After developing a common base of understanding, Brown develops a relatively simple trend following strategy applying what he calls three dimensional technical analysis. In three dimensional technical analysis, traders need to consider not only price and time in a single stock, but they should expand their focus to similar information in multiple stocks simultaneously. In his book, Brown fully develops a sample strategy to trade any NASDAQ stock, such as MSFT.

This strategy, one of many in the book, relies on an objective method of defi ning a market's trend - the binary trend identification method using
          Donchian bands:

          1. Filter condition: Take long positions in MSFT only if the NASDAQ Composite is in an uptrend, defined as price having made a new 32-day high more recently than it made a new 32-day low.
          2. Buy MSFT if it makes a new 24-day high while the NASDAQ Composite is in an uptrend.
          3. Limit your losses by setting an initial fixed stop at the 24-day low at the time of trade entry.
          4. If the initial stop is hit, reenter on a new 24-day high if the NASDAQ Composite is still in an uptrend.
          5. Exit if the NASDAQ Composite enters a downtrend, defined by the price reaching a new 32-day low.

Buy and sell decisions in this example follow the trend of the general market. The strategy manages open position P&L by limiting losses and allowing profits to run in bull markets.

Interestingly, specific reentry points are precisely defined. This is often challenging for traders to do, and Brown points out that it is important to get back into positions after being stopped out if trend following in equities is going to be rewarding to traders.

Other trading strategies are comprehensively developed in the book, and the reader is always given a complete understanding of the underlying principles. Brown also devotes a large portion of the book to a detailed discussion on position sizing, and provides worksheets that traders can use or adapt for their personal use to develop trading plans. Overall, the book can serve as a complete "how to" manual for the beginning trader, but offers a great deal for more experienced traders.

In an interesting, but brief section, Brown addresses the institutional money manager's need to add alpha by outperforming, on a relative basis, a benchmark. Assuming the benchmark is the S&P 500, Brown notes, "If you hold a proxy for the S&P 500 at all times when not trading, you need only to outperform the proxy during the holding periods of your trades to beat its long term performance (before commissions and taxes)." The discussion and test results of this point are worth considering for all those attempting to outperform a benchmark.

5 out of 5 stars Great book with rare insight.......2006-04-20

The chapter on level 2 alone is worth the price of the book. Yes the markets have changed and will continue to change, but you can always apply the general principles. Example: accumulation is accumulation regardless of what the market conditions are. Chris points out how to spot accumulation on level 2 and T&S, and if you grasp the idea, you should be able to spot them in any market with the tools available.

4 out of 5 stars Very useful, if somewhat out of date..........2002-02-17

There is much useful material, along with a thoughtful approach to creating a daytrading discipline, in this book. I don't fully agree with (and wouldn't expect to) all of Lewis' statements, and, as you might expect, given the changes in the trading environment over the last couple of years, many of his methods and observations are arguably already out of date, but others still apply, and his overall philosophy, perspective, and attitude are probably more important, in my opinion, than the particulars of his personal approach as practiced in and around late 2000. The text includes numerous clear, concrete, and detailed examples, though you may have to look past an L2 screen with a stack of QCOM buyers at 343 13/16 (I just never get over mania-market prices) to receive the message.

I lost money using these strategies. Buy Steve Nison book if you want a good book on TA. This one just doesn't measure up.

4 out of 5 stars All in all, a rather decent book.......2000-11-16

The good points: first, the book's emphasis is on trading the open, offering a straight forward strategy for playing momentum type gaps. Second, the book has a thorough review of TA basics filtered by practical and experienced advice. Third, there were several odds and ends (like NASDAQ having two data feeds, do the S&P Futures really say anything, etc) that were indeed helpful.

The not so good points: while, its all there, you have to really read the text carefully to extract what you need - meaning it could have been better organized for flow in some chapters. Second, a week in the life "Trading Week" would have been more satisfying if it had been two weeks long and not one (the author might disagree).

All in all, a rather decent book that I value for its level-headed, lets stick to the basics, here's what really works kind of thinking.

This book is a waste of money and time to anyone, even a novice, who seeks to learn the technical aspects of trading. The author fancies himself funny. If I wanted a humorous read, I would have purchased a book by Robin Williams.

"Technical Trading Online" by "Trader X" -- despite the cheesy pen name -- is truly one of the most well-written, informative, entertaining books on trading I've ever read. It really is a shame that this book is not more popular.

Definitely geared toward the beginning trader, this book is about as good as it gets as far as a non-intimidating, concisely comprehensive introduction to online stock trading goes. While it probably wouldn't have much extra knowledge to offer a successful, experienced trader, I would still gladly recommend it for a quick and entertaining read! Trust me when I say that once you read this book, you will recommend it forever to the novice traders seeking your advice...

5 out of 5 stars A Damned good read.- Easy but relevant.......2003-07-02

This is a really good book for someone who wants to learn, and understand with ease the signals to look for and the reasons behind them. Very informative - very easy to read - Not a technical book but an easy book on a technical subject. ... The book seems very relevant to real issues. A very good read for a novice - It takes a complex subject and describes technical methods in easy to understand and digestable formats - the humour makes it more real aswell.

Another plus point about the book is that as I read it it didnt attempt to put me off. I find many books spend their efforts warning you off - this book warns yet warms and gives you confidence in what you think you learn.

5 out of 5 stars this is a must read.......2001-06-02

If you were trading profitable would you read books about online trading?

So if you are interested in buying books about this topic then we can suggest that you're a beginning or a losing trader. As a beginner I'd prefer reading another book which focuses on the basics (like Elder's classic "Trading for a Living"). If you are in the markets for several months already and you think you might belong to the 90% losing traders then this book is for you. For all the Dollars lost in the markets you'd be stupid to save your cash on this book. I've read many great books about trading online. And this one belongs to my favorite. No book will make you trade profitably and no book is a substistute for experience. But some books including this one will help you make big steps forward.

Many books I've read about online or day trading were written by Nasdaq market makers. All in all they were all telling you the same about cutting losses etc. What makes this one outstanding is the use of those cunning and witty metaphors by the authors. I remember my first major loss, I was almost crying and doubting my existence. But when I read the very first pages of this book which were covering just my mischief I burst out laughing. One might think the author's trying to insult or making fun of the trading crowd out there calling us "stupids" or "schmoes". But he's not. He experienced the same I did. And many of you were experiencing severe losses too.

Losing is a learning process. Why crying about your losses when you can laugh and get your lessons by just reading this book. You really should do. -- Five Stars!!

          -------------

Okay, I leave the review above from June 2001 as it was.
Five years and some books on trading later I have to add that this and all other books from the Wiley Online Trading for a Living series are mainly written for beginning traders. They're not bad at all and you really don't waste your money on them.
Technical Trading Online still belongs to my favorites. However it lacks in details. I must admit that I rather read it for the laughs. Although the author finds some serious words at the end of the book. Trading IS a serious profession.
Today, when it comes to books that hammer and engrave their messages into my brain, I like to recommend Vadym Graifer's Techniques of Tape Reading and John Carter's Mastering the Trade which is a very fine book (and doesn't lack of wits either). These two books are not for beginners as they require common knowledge in technical analysis (like candles, trends or averages...). A great book on this basic knowledge is Steven Achelis' Technical Analysis form A to Z.

5 out of 5 stars Thank you Trader X.......2001-05-13

Great book. If only I had read this book six months ago. His four rules of trading provide a foundation which wealth can be built upon. I have read this book several times and consider it the best source of infomation on the realities of real world investing.
