    Book Description

    Miscommunication… Employee conflict… Work ethic debates… Loyalty issues… Varying wants and needs…

If you are a manager, human resources professional, or business owner, you are faced with these types of issues every day. But why?

Because currently, there are five generations in the workplace: Radio Babies (born during 1930-1945); Baby Boomers (1946-1964); Generation X (1965-1976); Generation Y (1977-1991); even some Millennials (1991 and later). Each of them has a different perspective, based on their upbringing and daily lives. The key to making encounters between the generations successful is learning to understand the point of view of each generation and respect their differences.

The individuals and organizations that do this will be the ones to succeed. This book will show you how.

Authors Gravett and Throckmorton take a dynamic approach to the situation by writing in two distinct voices—as a Baby Boomer and a Gen-Xer—using a "point-counterpoint" approach to identify differences and similarities across generations.

They share hands-on experiences, real-life cases, recommended solutions, and ground-breaking research on how members of any generation can better relate to minimize conflict, miscommunication, and wasted energy. You will learn what each generation thinks of the others and how each wishes the others viewed it.

Bridging the Generation Gap is filled with strategies and solutions you can implement immediately to help build your own bridge between the generations.

    Book Description

Viewing adolescence in the context of the family, The Seven-Year Stretch is the first book to show parents how and why some teenagers end up well adjusted while others end up in trouble. Why are some teens impulsive rule-breakers, while others seem more mindful of right and wrong? Why do some turn to drugs and alcohol regularly, while others experiment only on occasion? Why are some families constantly battling, while others have only minor conflicts? How can parents distinguish between normal rebellion and deeper problems? In this book, Laura Kastner, Ph.D., and Jennifer Wyatt, Ph.D., introduce us to a range of families---from thriving to struggling---and explain how their behavior patterns, past and present, affect the teenager's development. Garnered from Dr. Kastner's clinical and teaching experience, these true-to-life stories and dialogues illustrate the impact of such factors as clashing parenting styles, the temperaments of parents and children, parents' own unresolved issues, marital dynamics, and circumstances such as divorce, financial stress, and cultural differences. With optimism and creativity, the authors explain how parents can harness their family strengths to face today's challenges for adolescents. They look beyond the "shoulds," describing what different parenting approaches look like and sound like in action. Readers of the best early child-rearing texts of the times, from T. Berry Brazelton to Selma Fraiberg, will find The Seven-Year Stretch an essential guide to the passage throught the next stage---adolescence.

Dr. Kastner's style is very down-to-earth yet transmits concentrated, dense information/wisdom that parents probably need to read more than once to fully absorb. The one disappointment is the lack of an index. As I put down the book and later picked it up to review, I always found myself going to the index and finding there was none. The material would be more accessible if an index were added, as the table of contents isn't sufficiently detailed to help locate very specific points.

I'm an auntie of a 12 year old neice and a 10 year old nephew. This is the first book I've read on the mystery of adolesence and it was exactly what I was looking for. Clear, easy to understand, doable ideas and logic for keeping these tough relationships on track. Great anticdotes that remind you how painful it was to be that age - what you were thinking about. Great examples, concise, and hopeful - a great read. I especially enjoyed the chapter on "launching" - who knew there were so many issues, so much to consider, when pushing a child out of the nest SUCCESSFULLY say, to college?

4 out of 5 stars The Seven Year Stretch.......2000-05-01

I picked up this book a few weeks ago - my two daughters are twelve and fourteen. I could not put it down. Every page is applicable to our lives. I felt reassured that my girls are very normal, and that I am doing okay. Situations from real-life 'positive' family interactions remind me of where I can improve in my communication as a parent. Lessons are realistic, not restricted to an ideal world, or unattainable in our chaotic, busy household. The book is kept in the 'reference ' section of our library, and as issues arise, I turn to the Table of Contents to find the chapter pertaining to my quandry - sexuality, social issues with peers. I have shown excerpts to my older daughter, and we laugh together, seeing ourselves, and finding solutions agreeable to us both. My only complaint is that the book is only 300 pages - we have more questions with which I am sure the authors could offer insight. Bottom Line -- This book is real life, practical, helpful.

I was very disapointed because I have been unable to locate another one. Is there anyone out there who would like to part with theirs? Please let me know asap. Thank you.

        5 out of 5 stars A valuable reference!.......2002-02-20

As a divorce attorney with over 35 years at the bar, I've seen a lot of books written for people thinking about divorce - mostly focused on how to crush your spouse or select the meanest lawyer you can find. This book is different - the focus is on reducing the combat while maintaining a relationship despite the stress of divorce. I give this book to my clients at the first visit, and many have passed it along to their friends. I heartily recommend "How to Avoid the Divorce from Hell..." It may not save your marriage, but it can help you (and your spouse) survive the divorce with your sanity intact.

5 out of 5 stars Practical, useful and well-written divorce guide.......1999-02-24

I'm a judge who has heard divorce and child custody cases for the past five years. A divorce attorney recently shared a copy of this book with me, as she has already been doing with her clients. I must say that it is an excellent book, full of practical suggestions for getting through a divorce while doing the minimum possible damage to your children. Chapter 11 is entitled "Courts and Judges." I wish everyone could read that before they come to court. It makes real for the parties how limited the court's ability will be to really do justice in your case, and why courts should be the very last resort, used only after you've genuinely tried to resolve matters on your own. Judges can never understand your family - they can only get a snapshot-type presentation. Sue Talia uses her 20 years of experience to make these limitations clear. She also provides tips for choosing good attorneys, evaluating settlements, keeping things in perspective, etc. It's a very good book, well worth the price.

4 out of 5 stars Making Right Turns in Your Relationship.......2007-07-16

Making Right Turns in Your Relationship is a relationship communication exercise book. The author states that every individual has expectations of what a relationship should involve and how that relationship should look and feel. Unfortunately, couples rarely discuss these expectations and preconceived notions with their spouse. Therefore, when these individualized differences clash, each member of the couple expects the other person needs to conform to his or her way of thinking or doing. In other words, each member of the couple wants to win the fight.

Making Right Turns in Your Relationship relays information on how to explore individual expectations and preconceived notions toward the goal of collaborating these individual ideas into a more balanced situation where the relationship wins. The key to this method is respectful and honest communication and personal introspection. To this end, this book contains important subjects such as how to accentuate caring aspects of behavior and how to create a common marriage vision. Couples are encouraged to read the text and complete the practice exercises given throughout the book. This task can either be completed separately or as a couple. However, in either case, each member of the couple is encourage to share his or her thoughts about his or her expectations while learning to realign his or her behavior towards a happier, healthier relationship.

5 out of 5 stars With the proper tools we can make changes happen........2005-01-25

With a realistic understanding that change is difficult, author Myron Lewis offers this no-nonsense, straightforward approach to relationship building. As an active member of the relationship rescue squad (I was divorced in '03 and remarried in '04), I can truly say this is the best couple's self-help book I've seen - and I've seen dozens.

Using a blend of Zen and Behavior Modification, Lewis asks couples to create a "relationship vision," a picture or movie of how we want to see ourselves together. Having such a vision to refer to helps us identify when we're off track and provides a model to hold ourselves accountable to. He stresses the need to keep the relationship a priority by setting aside time and reinforcing positive behaviors, and asks readers to list daily, weekly, monthly and yearly activities to continue or start doing together. Such lists are found throughout the book, but they are simple to understand and easily completed, unlike the more complicated workbook-style exercises found in similar books.

Accomplishing these simple but gratifying tasks helps battle the number one relationship killer: lack of communication. Even MEN should respond to this logical, step-by-step approach! In plain-spoken style, Lewis explains the characteristics of dependence, independence, and interdependence (test question: which is better?) and gives sample interactions to illustrate ways to create and reinforce the latter. He explains the importance of achieving emotional awareness and clarifies how rules in a relationship are choices that need to be made and negotiated. Communication + understanding = problem solving for positive change. All of us want to feel appreciated, valued and accepted, and this book is the perfect tool for bringing that to our relationships.

5 out of 5 stars One of the more insightful books of this genre.......2004-12-28

In any relationship both partners will have to make choices and be responsible for their actions. Sometimes they will be the right choice and sometimes they will not. When you make a bad choice, or wrong turn, you cause the relationship to experience tension, frustration, and disappointment that you should not have to endure. Making the right turn allows you to avoid these problems and experience more satisfaction in the relationship. While nobody is perfect and so there will always be times when we make a wrong turn, it is possible to learn to identify them early and make the right choices more and more often. This is the goal of this book, to teach the reader how to identify and make those right turns.

The author starts by examining the characteristics of both a healthy and unhealthy relationship. From there he moves to understanding and respecting your relationship, creating a vision for where you want your relationship to be, and making it a priority in your life to move in that direction. By the time he gets the reader to this point the author starts asking the reader to consider their answers to various questions to help gain direction for their relationship. For example he asks, "What behaviors do you want to stop doing on a daily basis?", "What behaviors would you like to start implementing daily?", "Identify several positive characteristics or behaviors of your partner."

Other areas the author looks at include the rules and boundaries we live by, how to communicate better, better problem solving skills, creating change, and creating an action plan. If you want to take an active role in improving your relationship this book will help you understand how. There are other books on rescuing or improving a relationship but very few of them go as far as Myron Lewis has done in preparing insightful questions to help the reader decide what is important, what needs to change, and how to achieve that change. Making Right Turns in Your Relationship is highly recommended for anyone who truly wants to work through a plan with their partner to actively create change in their relationship and manage that change to create the best possible relationship.

5 out of 5 stars Relationship book review.......2004-11-28

This book is highly reccommended for anyone who wants to get the best they can out of their relationship with a significant other. Which would included most people. I beleive that while you are working on developing a healthy relationship with your spouse, etc. You may use some of these thoughts and techniques to help strengthen other relationship with friends, family and even strangers. While it is based on the relationship of the significant other, some techiques of listening to others and understanding yourself will benefit your communications skills. We don't get an education on relationship and communication skills in school, and unless you had great examples of parents (which doesn't seem common enough) you can learn these skills now. Enjoy this book and good luck with your relationships. Maria BLackmer-Michigan

The art of selling financial products and services is a challenging process, requiring new skills and continuous learning to thrive in a constantly changing environment. With skeptical, bear-market bruised consumers demanding more for less, a solid, practical guideline is needed for both new and experienced salespeople to follow. 22 Keys to Success for Selling Financial Products and Services is the answer to this need. Each chapter addresses a fundamental issue in selling, representing the best practices of high-producing financial advisers and insurance professionals in the industry. Authors Jim Benson and Paul Karasik draw on their many years of personal experience in selling financial services to help all salespeople improve their skill sets and fundamental abilities. Succinctly and with engaging precision, the 22 precepts zero in on key issues--from qualifying clients to perfecting the sales presentation to overcoming objections--that financial services professionals need to master the art of selling. This handy guide for sales success is filled with powerful strategies, concepts, and principles, yet is easy and fast to read.

5 out of 5 stars Clear tips for selling financial products.......2006-02-23

Selling is not about pushing products any more. Pitches or sales gimmicks do not persuade the contemporary cynical, savvy consumer. In today's world, successful financial services and product sales professionals must build mutually beneficial relationships with their clients based on trust and respect. Authors James M. Benson and Paul Karasik use their experience and accomplishments in finance and insurance to identify 22 key sales strategies that anyone can use, including sales professionals in other industries. Much of the advice, for good or ill, is not specific to the area of financial services. Each chapter explains a tried-and-true, applicable sales strategy in an easy-to-understand format. You've heard some of these strategies before, but others will provide new fuel to energize your approach to sales. Each strategy makes sense and we recommend this book to everyone who sells financial products, whether you are a weathered sales veteran or a novice who is still finding your way.

4 out of 5 stars Basic Review for Financial Planners.......2005-07-25

I have been a financial planner for a little over three years and I was reading this book to get some new ideas on growing my practice. Many of the ideas in this book I have read elsewhere. They just reinforced them in me, which is always good. I liked the Johari window idea in which you let everyone and remind everyone you meet what you do. I know sometimes I forgot exactly what some of my friends do. In the financial planning industry, I feel it is important to let everyone know all the things you can do and perhaps ask them to let their friends know about your services. Of course, don't push it - just give them a gentle reminder by weaving into the conversation every now and then.

This book would have been better if they had included more real life experiences from the people they have mentored. Hearing directly from them in their own words how they used each of these 22 keys would have made them more powerful.

In summary, this book is for someone who wants to reinforce the principles of sales success in the financial and insurance industry. For others who want new ideas they want to utilize in their practice, I would suggest looking elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars An incredible value for your money.......2004-08-31

Books that give genuinely new ideas -- or utterly practical tips -- on sales are worth their weight in gold. This one does both. The instructions on how to create your own One-Minute Positioning statement alone are worth 10 times the price of the book -- it is absolutely the best technique around for explaining to people in a brief statement what you do and why they should be interested.

4 out of 5 stars Narrow Your Focus and Do More of What Works.......2004-05-10

Review Summary: 22 Keys to Sales Success has some very fine material in it. The book would have been much improved if it had focused on one type of sales professional in one type of organization looking for one type of client (a new life insurance salesperson in a small agency dealing with owners of small businesses, for example). That would have allowed the material to have been more focused and customized for immediate use. At the same time, some of the material just doesn't fit certain classes of sales professionals. If you are wise enough to ignore what doesn't fit, this book can greatly improve your success.

Review: The authors are clearly well read and have had a lot of experience going to seminars. The many references to the works of others are appropriate and add depth to this otherwise simple book. From that authority, they provide many helpful suggestions that will be essential to newcomers to financial sales and valuable to experienced people who aren't using the advice.

I thought that the advice to Create Your Compelling Vision, Position with Mission, Energize Your Success, Open the Johari Window, Market Yourself as the Expert, Focus on Clients (Not Compensation), Demand Objections, and Be Your Own Sales Manager were superb. I was skeptical about the strong emphasis on continuing efforts to close, scripts and the suggested ways to get referrals. The material in the book seemed inauthentic to me in these areas as a professional, and I graded the book down accordingly.

It seemed like the book was aimed more at those selling insurance products for life and retirement than anything else. So if that's what you sell, this book is probably good for you. If you are a financial planner who looks at all dimensions of planning, this book is probably too sales-oriented to meet your professional standards. If you are an attorney, you will probably find much of what the book says to be appalling in its commercial focus.

One of the ironies of this book is that the authors suggest that you focus in as narrow a niche of services and customers as possible. I wonder why they didn't follow their own advice in writing this book.

              * Market-specific to financial services * CD Rom providing KAM analysis software, and access to further support. * Practical tools, both in the text and the CD-ROM Building on the success of Peter Cheverton's generic book, Key Account Management, (now in its third edition), Key Account Management in Financial Services follows a broadly similar structure but is aimed at sales and marketing people in the financial services (FS) sector. Designed for practitioners and managers responsible for implementation, the focus is on "making it happen," using real examples to illustrate tools and models, and to highlight success and failure. The book takes the readers through a developing process of understanding, analysis, planning, implementation, and performance monitoring, matching the development over time of their own plans. It is intended to be used as a "before, during, and after" guide to practical implementation. Targeted narrowly on financial services, the book addresses the changing environment and the new imperatives for KAM -- the rising cost of sales, regulatory bodies, globalization of customers, new customer organizations; the buying process in Financial Services; "Competitor Replacement Strategies," a particular feature of the FS market. Also included are a much expanded section on E-commerce and the Internet, and one on the management of non Key Accounts, vital to the success of any KAM strategy in these markets

              3 out of 5 stars A Solid Effort!.......2005-05-25

Editor Peter Cheverton is a guru of KAM, and this book somewhat modifies and tailors his basic KAM approach to fit the needs of the financial services industry. The tailoring is slight, mainly a matter of streamlining the style, although that is welcome. One brief but very useful section discusses the importance of dealing with and through intermediaries. In fact, many financial services vendors work through intermediaries, distributing their products or services through banks, insurance companies, mutual fund companies or others. Cheverton and his co-editors, Tim Hughes, Bryan Foss and Merlin Stone, usefully point out that it is important not to consider the intermediary as the customer. Instead, the vendor should look through the intermediary to the final user and assist the intermediary in developing an offering that suits the needs and preferences of that end user. People who have read Cheverton's "Key Account Management" will learn little new here, but we believe that those who have not - particularly those in the financial services sector - will benefit from this shorter, easier book.

                    Book Description

Companies and financial institutions are employing operational information systems in an efficient way. While they have consolidated a strong level of knowledge in management information systems, there is still a lack of knowledge on the right way to apply customer relationship management (CRM) systems under a business perspective. Most of the companies are still having problems in evaluating how CRM can meet with the expected results. The level of complexity is perceived both under a technological and organizational point of view. A complete innovation process and heavy change management initiatives should be ensured in order to have effective and successful systems. This book offers a solid theoretical and practical perspective on how to face CRM projects, describing the most appropriate technologies and organizational issues that have to be considered. Some explaining cases have been included as well.
