A Good Read!.......2001-02-24
Self-help books tend to be either insightful or dumb. Author Ann Marie Sabath manages to accomplish both results in the same book. At times, the book provides useful examples on topics that are truly unclear, but other times it tells you to wear your goulashes in the snow. If you are willing to shift through some incredible obviousness, then you will find enough pearls. The lists of common mistakes that start each chapter are particularly helpful. If you do nothing else, read these lists and find out if you are committing a dressing gaff. If you can honestly say that you have not or never will commit any of the mistakes on the lists then you are ready to navigate the business casual workplace confidently.
A decent overview.......2000-09-20
This book is certainly easy to read and presents some very solid advice. It covers a wide variety of topics from heel heights to skirt lengths, from the rules about wearing cologne to protocol for wearing nose rings at work(don't!). However, I was disappointed that it contained not a single illustration, as I would think that a book purporting to help people learn how to dress for work might include a few sketches or photos...a picture being worth a thousand words, you know. In addition, several topics (the skirt length issue, for example) were repeated numerous times, which was annoying to say the least. Finally, I found the pagination system to be deceptive at best. The text STARTS on page 15 and the last few pages of the book are devoted to things like "about the author" and an index. By my count, you really only get 185 pages of text.
Excellent resource for today's professional.......2000-09-14
Sabath has done an excellent job of condensing a potentially huge body of advice into a readable book that's not at all pretentious or sermon-like. She covers the gamut of issues from how NOT to dress in a business casual environment to how TO dress in an environment that's not business casual. She also spends some useful time on what to wear on casual Friday's in an otherwise professionally-dressed work environment. I highly recommend this book to both corporate and government professionals, and definitely to anyone preparing for interviews in either environment.
Very highly recommended "dress for success" reference........2000-08-04
Beyond Business Casual: What To Wear To Work If You Want To Get Ahead explains what to wear on the job when there's no written dress code; the dress faux pas most commonly made in the business world today; what "business casual" really is; how to add clout to what you say by what you wear; and how to dress when you're in doubt about what to wear. Very highly recommended for anyone concerned with "dressing for success", Beyond Business Casual is formatted as a series of questions and answers, and offers a wealth of real-life examples and illustrations drawn from Ann Marie Sabath's business attire workshops and her years of experience in consulting with members of the business community on how to look professional.
Who couldn't benefit from this book?.......2000-05-28
Ann Marie Sabath has written an excellent guide to one of the thorniest issues in business today--what to wear to work. The advent of business casual in the 1990's created a dilemma that lives on in the business world. Everyone from the CEO of the company to the lowliest clerk is trying to figure out how to dress. Ms. Sabath, with her 13 years of experience, has written on this subject in her uasual direct and easy-to-read approach. Her question and answer style takes the reader through all aspects of workplace attire from defining business casual to deciding what to wear to the holiday party. This book is appropriate for everyone entering the business world as well as those who have been on the job for years.

how to achieve your goals and increase your influence at work.......2007-05-13
The book is very descriptive of what to do to get ahead in any organization. I really enjoying it
Yep, it's true........2007-02-20
Reading this book is like reading the manual for just about any corporation with more than 20 people. It doesn't matter where you go, you will run into a lot of what you will find in this book. It certainly doesn't hurt to be prepared.
A "must read" for every professional!.......2007-02-07
I read this book before staring my new job. I feel more prepared than ever for what I need to do to be successful. This book was so thorough and content-rich, I put tabs in it and carry it with me to work . . . just in case I need to reference something or need a "refresher course". I recommend this book for seasoned professionals as well as those just entering the workforce!
Give this book to graduates and employees!.......2005-08-01
The title of Chapter One in Secrets to Winning at Office Politics says it all, "Politics is not a dirty word." Office politics has always had a negative connotation but in reality it has just taken a bad rap. Secrets reminds us that office politics is simply the reality of relationships and Dr. Marie McIntyre shows us all how to play the game - honestly, ethically and successfully.
McIntyre uses real life examples from her experience working for a Fortune 500 company and her consulting business to give the reader an excellent view of the real world at the office. Her straightforward yet entertaining style is refreshing and her practical advice and self-assessment questions and surveys make the book a gem.
Secrets lays out in very practical and anecdotal style how one can succeed simply by understanding the unwritten rules of working with and for someone. What is unique about the book is the openness with which the subject is discussed - the real life examples are those we can all relate to as an employee, a boss, a parent, a teacher or a friend. It provokes a kind of self-evaluation that some people never seriously consider.
Give this book to every high school or college graduate you know! If you are the boss, read it, and then encourage your employees to do the same. It's a keeper.

Customer Reviews:
disappointing & mediocre.......2003-03-10
I found this book very disappointing. It's more a showcase for not very good painters than a useful source of information on composition techniques. I did not recognize any of the names from the fine work I've seen in the International Artist's magazine but rather ordinary & mediocre examples. Explanations were wordy & dogmatic rather than visually instructive. The material is not organized in any formal manner for a subject such as this...Generally disappointing in every respect.
Design Tips from Canada.......2001-10-18
This book has an interesting approach to teaching design and composition. Each artist wrote an essay explaining their approach to creating dynamic paintings. My only wish is that the book offered insights from artists around the world rather than focusing exclusively on Canadians.
Most of the paintings are in a realist style although some begin to approach a bit more non-representational styles. The quality of the essays also seemed to vary. Some essays I found very helpful, for example, one gave a tip list of points to keep in mind while composing a painting. Another gave a tip of making a cutout of your subject in different sizes and then seeing which size and placement worked the best. Yet another gave a Rule of 360 tip - i.e. keep turning the composition because you might find alternative compositions more interesting than the one you're working on currently. It might even spawn several new painting ideas to follow up on.
For me personally, the less helpful essays were more rambling musings by the artist on their spiritual thoughts on composition. While I understand some artists may find these type of essays enjoyable or helpful I find it hard to translate such spiritual musings into actual practices I can use to improve my own work. Fortunately, most of the essays had plenty of interesting tips and practical approaches and exercises I've never thought of that I will be using now. Overall the quality of the book is very high. It definitely shows the same high quality as the magazine affiliated with it. Get this book and discover all kinds of fascinating exercises and tips to improve your artwork.
A wondeful book!.......2001-08-13
If you only ever get one book on composition it has to be this one! Composition is such an important tool for any artist; it can make or break a painting. Regardless of what style of painting you do, good composition and design is the foundation of a successful painting. And yet this is a subject that doesn't get taught in art schools and books on the subject are few and far between and often very dry and technical.
Design and Composition Secrets really does change all that. It's a fascinating read, fabulously illustrated throughout and full of great tips and techniques. I highly recommend it to anyone trying to learn more about composition. It has really improved my painting and has given me so many ideas. It's the kind of book you'll be using for years.
It takes 16 different artists, with very different styles and allows each of them a chapter to explain their own approach to composition, using plenty of examples of their work and finishing with a gallery of the artists paintings complete with a compositional analysis.
The result is a set of essays that come at the subject from many different angles. Donna Baspaly's fabulous layered multi media paintings demonstrate her philosophical approach, her emphasis on structure, shape and the use of checklists to keep on track during painting. Robert Bateman loves abstract qualities and shares his cut out composition tactic along with his stunning wildlife paintings. Don Farrell looks for rhythm and harmony, shape relationships and connections and divisions. Tom Huntley shares his 5 point plan and his wonderful sense of colour and Myfanwy Pavelic never consciously thinks about design or composition at all, her approach is based on intuition.
Along the way they cover a wealth of information that you'd expect from a book like this, shape, colour, texture, pattern, values, geometry, the golden section, rhythm, balance, negative space and the like. But they also cover some more surprising topics like the child within, intuitive painting, left brain and right brain painting, using a projector, choreographing movement and designing for a strong emotional response. It's full of surprises and fresh ideas.
This book is not just a wonderful resource on composition, which you'll want to come back to again and again, but also an incredible insight into how 16 very different artists work. I absolutely love it!
design variations.......2001-06-12
This book certainly lives up to it title in providing many different perspectives when looking at design and composition. Perhaps a prior knowledge of design and composition would be an advantage in order to understand some of the interpretations when some artists refer to "rightness", their intuition and their sense of rhythm and harmony. The book is full of colourful paintings, pencil sketches showing line, shape and values. There is certainly plenty of variety, both in the style of painting and the method for the composition and design. There do not seem to be many books on the market in this area and I am sure this book will provide plenty of ideas and perhaps a new way of looking at problems in this area. I have just one grumble and that is so many art books are 127/128 pages long and it is always great when you come across books that have been exceedingly generous with number of pages but this book is the usual 127 pages long.

Valuable Resource.......2003-02-27
When I was in high school I got the first edition of the excellent book. Now as a college student I picked up the second edition and it is as good, if not better than, the first edition. Like the old edition it is still divided into two parts. The first part is a strategy guide with lots of useful tips for finding scholarships, writing your application, negotiating for financial aid, and even specific tips for specific scholarships. The rest of the book is a scholarship directory. It looks like it contains more than the first edition - although I didn't actually count. The presentation of the scholarships are better than before and I found it easier to find awards for my major and career goals. Overall, I am very happy with this book. Although there are sections for high school students I feel that I have benefited as a college student. This is a valuable resource that I highly recommend.
