A 'must have' for ITIL Exam Prep -- Especially for the Master's Level Certification.......2007-01-20
I purchased this book and its companion, Service Support, to prepare for the Master's level exam a couple of years ago. I read these books, made outlines, completed a practice exam and found that I was sufficiently prepared to pass the exam on my first try.
I know that some people will sit for the exam using other sources, such as their class notes or materials their training provider created. I would rather not study from information too far removed from the primary source. Sometimes there is a reason you do not want to use a primary source. Perhaps the material is too sterile and you need the examples that secondary sources tend to provide. However, that is not the case for these books.
The material is well organized. The concepts within chapters are numbered, and the accompanying charts and graphs help clarify the ideas. The concepts are written in an easy to understand style.
On a cautionary note, you must decide whether you should purchase this version 2 book based on when you plan to sit for the certification exam. As you may have heard, Version 3 is scheduled for release in Spring of this year.
If you are wondering what will be different between the two versions, as well as what changes to expect in certification and examination, do a google search for `ITIL refresh news straight from the source.' This newsletter contains an article written by Sharon Taylor, ITIL Chief Architect.
Best of official ITIL guides.......2004-07-01
Among the official guides this one stands out as the most detailed and practical. Most of the official guides are, in my opinion, essential only if you are pursuing certification, but this one goes beyond the essential minimums by providing practical information about the five key process areas in more depth. The areas covered are:
(1) Service Level Management
(2) Financial Management for IT Services
(3) Capacity Management
(4) IT Service Continuity Management
(5) Availability Management
As in all books in this series this one covers the theory, practical and implementation perspectives, as well as the relationships between and among key process areas.
Another resource I highly recommend is ITIL Community Forum, which you can reach by pasting the ASIN number B0002FP9PO into the search box on this page, selecting all products and clicking GO. This site has a link to an open source version of the ITIL documentation that is evolving, but contains good descriptions of many of the key process areas.
Fundamental IT.......2002-04-11
The information Technology Infraestructure Library is a set of guidance developed by United Kingdom's Office of Goverment Commerce (OGC). The guidance, documented in a set of books, describe an integrated, process based, best practice framework for managing, delevop in this case, IT services. To date, this book is the only comprehensive, non-propriestary, publicly available guidance fot IT Management in Service Delivery.
So, is primarily targeted at people responsible for managing IT services or IT consultants from enterprise that offers IT review services.

Can be safely ignored.......2004-07-01
Most of the books in the official ITIL series are required reading if you are implementing or pursuing ITIL certification. This one can, in my opinion, be safely ignored.
The key theme of the book is promotion of the ITIL and its benefits, and a high-level overview of implementation issues. The areas covered include: describing the ITIL vision, helping you to determine your 'As Is' posture and your 'To Be' per the ITIL.
It also provides a roadmap to get from 'As Is' to 'To Be', checkpoints, and advice on how to maintain momentum during the implementation. This guide also gives an example cost-benefit analysis supporting for service management process implementation, a process maturity framework, and a glossary of terms.
A more detailed book that will easily supplant this one is "IT Service Management: An Introduction" (ISBN 9080671347). It contains all of the information that this book provides, plus an in-depth look at each of the ITIL's key process areas, how they relate to one another, and better implementation advice.

Preferred to Robert's.......2007-03-27
If you can convince your orgaization to use this manual instead of Robert's, I say go for it! I find this manual much easier to use and more in line with what people expect to be the procedures for having meetings. The book updates old-fashioned language like, "I move the previous question" with the more understandable "I move to close debate". The book includes model Bylaws (useful for our Homeowner's Association which is in the process of revision), and a section that explains the differences between this book and Robert's, as well as tips for those whose organizations still use Robert's.
The book is much more readable than Robert's and tends to explain the basic principles a little better. There's a handy table inside each cover to help a member attending a meeting or a presider with proposing and handling motions.
Best Parliamentary Authority.......2003-05-10
The Standard Code is a better parliamentary authority then Robert's. It simplifies and modernizes parliamentary authority, making it more accessible to more people. Dump your RONR and get this work.

If you've always feared having to pull out the ol' Robert's Rules of Order because it was too detailed and complex for the casual social organizations in which you participated, help is here. Someone has realized that, because a group might need parliamentary procedures, it does not need the granularity required by The Parliament of England.
The Standard Code of Parliamentary Procedure is understandable, comprehensive, logical, refined, and efficient. As it should, it covers all the formal business of holding a productive and respectful meeting. But it also includes procedures that facilitate business for the less formal organization or club.
Necessary jargon is defined in a glossary. The "Often-Asked Questions" section covers many common situations and eliminates the need to look through the chapters for most answers. The book is up-to-date, addressing contemporary and often-encountered situations such as holding meetings and elections via the telephone or Internet.
As a bonus, it serves as a resource to those trying to form an organization. There are chapters to help you prepare documents (like bylaws and financial records) that won't be in conflict with legal and parliamentary procedures down the line. It explains the hierarchy of documents that govern an organization. There's even a section that helps explain some of the arcane procedures in Robert's Rules!
I'm grateful to have found this gem. It deals with all the situations that my clubs have encountered.
An alternative to Robert's Rules of Order.......1999-12-22
One of the best modernised book on the parliamentary procedures.
1st published in 1950, this 3rd edition is revised by the American Institute of Parliamentarians in 1988.Since this publication, many organisations have changed their bylaws to designate it as their parliamentary authority, among them are: American Medical Association and the American Dental Association.
It is the second most popular parliamentary authority after Robert's Rules of Order.
WHAT GROUPS MUST FOLLOW PARLIAMENTARY PROCEDURE? 'All organizations, such as business, cultural, religious, social, fraternal, professional, educational, labor, civil, scientific, medical, and governmental, are subject to the principles and rules of common parliamentary law. All profit and non-profit corporations and associations and the boards, counsels, commissions, and committees of government, must observe its rules.' Sturgis, p. 3.
This book is undoubtedly one of the best and comprehensive works. There is also a chapter which intended especially to aid persons unfamiliar with parliamentary procedure.
To quote Dr. Floyd M. Riddick, Parliamentarian Emeritius US Senate: 'It is understandable vocabulary makes it usable by anyone, not just experts in the field. All students of parliamentary procedure should have a copy in their library.'
THE Code of Parliamentary Procedure.......1999-11-28
Contains the complete standard code of parliamentary procedure, with each aspect thoroughly explained. This is the widely accepted procedure for meetings (ie United Nations). Very useful for keeping large meetings organized.

The book was an optional purchase for my Urban Redevelopment class. Most of us purchased and found it helpful in creating our final project for the semester, which was to create a realistic proposal on local urban redevelopment. In my 30years of practice as a psychotherapist I have found no book more useful than this one.The authors have a lot of experience coahing professionals while they actually use their suggestions and refine their advice based on actual experience. I wish more practice building books where written this way.

Although the book is 6 years old the concepts are very practical and have found it to be of help in establishing a new practice. My practice is Cardiology.
