this book should be titled "professional appearance for dummies". most of the information is very very basic. remember, this book is only 51 pages all inclusive. in that space, it covers dressing, posture, emailing, eating, etc. not a lot of information on any topic.
on top of that, some of the information is wrong. for instance, the author derates asymmetrical tie knots like the half windsor as unprofessional. this is inaccurate and the half windsor is one of the three most popular tie knots for business. (another - the four in hand - the most common - is also asymmetrical)
if you "don't do nuance" and want a couple of rules to live by - this is your book. alternately, if you are young and need a good introduction, read this. otherwise, its really not worth the money.
Overpriced but good for teens.......2003-10-05
Prior to buying this book, I read a review that said it was too simple for real office professionals but good for teens just entering the workplace as a starter guide. I think that is a good appraisal.
So I bought the book as a gift for a teen just graduating from high school.
As a gift for a teen, I am disappointed with the sketchy, plain cover and the sketch quality of the illustrations.
I am also disappointed that including shipping and handling I paid some $17 or $18 and received a book that looks like I paid $2 for it. Therefore, it is not well suited as a stand-alone gift either. This was not a "good deal."
In spite of it's cheap appearance and thinness, the information inside is good for a first, elementary, book on dress and conduct.

This book is for a young man who is about to graduate from high school or college. If you are looking for a serious book about men's fashion, I suggest you look elsewhere. Perhaps you may want to look at Josh Karlen's 'Indispensible Guide to Classic Men's Clothing' which I found informative reading in the areas of suits, shirts, and outerwear; or even Tim Meehan's 'Suit Yourself' which I thought was interesting in the areas of "dress" casual and "corporate" casual. It took me about 10 minutes to read Mr. Greenleaf's book after skimming the chapters on 'Shaking Hands', 'Shining shoes' (who has time to put shaving cream on their shoes?)and business etiquette. If you need work in these areas, then this book is for you. If you are already established in the business world and have already committed all the fashion crimes early in your career but are gearing more towards the next level in classic men's fashion, this book is not for you. This book is a very basic primer for a person whose closet is empty.

Not a true gentleman.......2006-04-08
I checked this book out (did not purchase it, fortunately) after reading a tacky article by the author on MSN.com about how a woman can best "romance a man". I actually checked out the book because I could not believe, after reading the MSN article, that the author had really written a book on how to be a "gentleman" and I had to see for myself what it had to say. It was as tacky as the article in MSN. A true gentleman is true to himself and is who he says and appears to be.

The author makes some really valid statements that are right on and easy on the eyes. He distills the subject matter into a highly potent brew that can help any of us, who were not born into the "lifestyles of the rich and famous" to at least not make a fool out of ourselves when placed into situations requiring some finnesse. I have read it a number of times. His wit alone is worth the cost of the book.
If you like to read GQ and want to become more than what you are then I highly suggest this book for you. Most of the other reviewers seem to be down on this book. I don't understand why. I really liked it. I read it twice.

Does Shakespeare really need this?.......2007-09-09
It is always nice to see passages of Shakespeare. It is always nice to meet familiar lines and to come upon striking new ones.
Yet there is a problem with an anthology of this kind, for in taking the quotations out of context one deprives them of their richness in meaning. There is another sin here, and that is taking passages which have come down to us as complete units such as the famous 'Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow ' speech of Macbeth, and abbreviating them chopping them up so that their full force is lost.
This book can be enjoyed because it does have the incomparable Shakespeare in it. But it is not really true to the work as it was written.

"How to Blend in with Everyone Else at Work".......2007-10-04
While potentially helpful for those with no knowledge of clothing or appearance, this book is an astonishingly elementary guide, and those who already have any knowledge of professional dress will be disappointed.
In addition to being a how-to guide for those with little common sense, the book repeatedly blurs the line between objectivity and the author's own preferences or biases presented as fact. One small part that exemplifies some of my frustration with this book appears on pages 45-46 in the form of a parenthetical statement: "Incidentally, note that one 'plays golf' and does not 'go golfing.' Golf is a noun like tennis, not a verb like swim." The book makes many of these sort of off-the-cuff assertions, which are not necessarily grounded in fact. A casual read of any current English dictionary (whether it be Merriam-Webster or the Oxford English Dictionary) will reveal that the word "golf" is not only a noun but is, indeed, an intransitive verb. Regardless, such semantic discussions are completely irrelevant to a guide to appearance and should be beyond the scope of such a book.
In truth, the above is a very minor point, but illustrates the book's most major flaw, which is that it seems more a collection of the author's pet peeves than a helpful guide for any gentleman who cares to cultivate a more distinguished look or a better sense of style than the average (or slightly above average) one he may already possess.
Ultimately, this makes a decent "College Guy's Guide to Appearance," or a "Guide to Appearance for the Clothing Illiterate," or perhaps most accurately, "How to Blend In with Everyone Else at Work." But it is far from being a gentleman's guide to bettering his own appearance.
Most importantly, this book will not teach one how to stand out with a distinguished look or how to impress others with a refined appearance, but rather how to fit in like every other cog in the machine. Perhaps this is exactly what many readers are looking for; however, the title creates expectations that the book does not meet.
