VietNam is land full of promise and potential -- yet is faced with pressing political and economic challenges. VIETNAM TODAY provides a valuable picture of VietNam, past and present, and defines the issues and trends of today. It is a very practical guide that captures the culture, politics and complexity of today's VietNam - a nation of 80+ million - the thirteenth most populous country - with the second fastest growing economy.
It is significant to note that more than two-thirds of Vietnamese were born after the last American GI left in 1975. This book describes the 21st Century VietNam where, for the first time in more than 100 years, a generation has grown into adulthood not experiencing war or foreign domination.
VIETNAM TODAY was written for those who will visit VietNam on business, as well as for travelers who come on holiday also who want to know something about the country they are visiting. Furthermore, it should be read by Americans who want to understand VietNam as a country - not the name of a war.
It provides chapters on geography, demographics, politics, economy and business, history, changes since the war, cultural differences and offers invaluable tips for dealing with Vietnamese. It describes how to work with the fact that VietNam is a relationship-based society in which everyone is tapped into a network. It makes the observation that mavericks and lone wolves are likely to fail in making inroads here.
Particularly helpful is Chapter 7, "How the Vietnamese See Westerners." It presents impressions and reflections - positive, negative and constructively critical - from Vietnamese who have worked with foreigners for many years.
Don't let the subtitle "a Guide . ." mislead you into thinking that this book is simply your basic travel book (for that, I recommend The Rough Guide to VietNam and National Geographic Traveler's new VietNam guidebook).
VIETNAM TODAY offers a vivid, compassionate view of a people and a land that captured my heart two-and-a-half decades before Ashwill set foot in the country. It helped provide a context for me to understand numerous things that I had observed but hadn't been able to fully comprehend. This book will not only change the way you think about VietNam, it may cause you to reflect upon how you view the world. That's a lot to get from a travel guide!

This book provided an excellent overview of the culture of Vietnam. I'd recommend it to anyone traveling to Vietnam on business or for pleasure.
The best book on Vietnamese culture by a foreigner.........2005-12-26
As a Vietnamese-American living in the US for 26 years, I consider this book one of the best ever written about Vietnam nowadays undergoing great changes. Very insightful,honest, fair,well balanced, non bias and not influenced by,for the better or worse, the American experience in Vietnam. Only a few corrections are recommended for next editions. First the Chams ( not Chans), are a malay group of minorities.The group living in Central Vietnam are mainly hinduist while the other group living in the Delta ( province of An Giang ) are mainly muslim.They never consider themselves as Vietnamese but Chams whose civilization was destroyed by the Vietnamese. The name of the late President of South Vietnam missed the middle name. He is Ngo "dinh" Diem, still highly revered by the majority of Vietnamese overseas. I appreciate very much the fact that the author use the abbreviation HCM City for Saigon instead of the full name which is anathema for many Vietnamese. Very clever and sensitive. The quotation about letting the windows open will let a few flies and mosquitoes flying in is one of the famous quotation of Deng Xiao Ping which changed the history of China. The sub title " a Guide " can mislead a few readers to think that this book is just another touristic travel book about Vietnam ( most of them not well written and superficial). This book is much more valuable and insightful than all the recent books about Vietnam. Congratulations !!!

Vietnam Today, A Guide to a Nation at a Crossroads is a unique guide to Vietnamese life and history for anyone who is interested in succeeding in a business or endeavor in modern Vietnam. If you are willing to spend a little time understanding the cultural influences on personal and business interactions in Vietnam, this book will be very helpful in your endeavors.
Much of Vietnam Today focuses on cultural interactions between Vietnamese people and Vietnamese and foreigners, especially Americans. It aptly explores the differences between societal expectations and unspoken rules between the two somewhat disparate cultures. Several chapters are devoted to explaining Vietnamese culture and manners in the context of business and society. Anyone working with Vietnamese people or staying long term in Vietnam will find these discussions and examples enlightening.

Meets the Minimum Requirements.......2003-09-05
As a long time teacher of Arabic in the United States, I am aware of the difficulty of choosing a textbook that presents the four basic language skills (listening, speaking, reading, writing) in a cogent, yet efficient, format. Because of the small number of Arabic students (compared to Spanish, French and other popular languages), few functional textbooks in Arabic are published. It is, therefore, difficult to find a textbook that represents not only the latest theories in language teaching, but also is arranged in a way that transmits the language in an enjoyable and interesting venue.
"Arabic Today" attempts to bridge the gap between spoken and written Arabic through the use of "educated spoken Arabic". This is a term generally used to loosely describe the coalescence of different registers in spoken language. What that essentially means is that educated people will use a less formal way of communicating, de-emphasizing the grammar bound and somewhat archaic format of the literary, or formal, spoken language. Although "Arabic Today" begins with an easy conversational format, it quickly evolves into just another of the grammar-oriented textbooks that tests one resolve to dissect the structure of the language rather than learning how to communicate with the people who speak it. The conversational settings that it presents focus far too much on grammatical structures presented in the lesson and, unfortunately, not on functions that a visitor to the Middle East may need. A particular disappointment is the glossary at the back of the book which does not render the meaning of the word in question, but rather refers the reader to the page in the book wherein the sought-after word may be found. Although there is no "Holy Grail" for the teaching of Arabic to American students, "Arabic Today" with all of its shortcomings may serve the purpose until a better textbook comes along.
A great overview of modern Arabic.......2001-10-19
I really love this book as it is one of the few which manages to strike some kind of balance between the written language and the spoken colloquials. Few people really realise just how divergent the spoken 3ammiya versions of modern Arabic differ from the official,literary version which is the same in all Arabic speaking countries (but which no-one actually "speaks"). This book tries to present typical colloquial features that cross the various national dialects as well as pointing out certain regional peculiarities (which can really only be fully learned by living among native speakers). Moreover, having presented the spoken language it then goes on to present modern, literary Arabic (alFusha) in a very practical and relevant way. I really recommend this book to anyone wanting to get a foothold in modern (spoken and written Arabic).

Not the simple do-it-yourself book I had hoped for. The use ofsymbols in the book demands that you possess the audiotape for thiscourse.

I bought this book from Amazon recently, they have been great about getting it resolved but from what we can tell after having replaced twice the serial number that they mention on the book is not included in any of the books Amazon has in stock.
A digest of rules too broad for serious instructional use........2000-01-02
The 5th Edition of "Business Law Today, The Essentials" is a slightly pared down, paper-bound version of the authors' hard back college text "Business Law Today, - Text and Summarized Cases, Legal, Ethical, Regulatory and International Environment."
SUMMARY. The book fills the bill as a "Readers Digest" reference work on general legal principles. But, it is too broad in its treatment to be a reliable resource for comprehensive instructional purposes.
BASIS. This reviewer is an attorney with over 25 years experience teaching business law. The writer uses the 5th edition of this work, and used the 2d, 3d and 4th editions of the text, as a required instructional resource in accordance with directions from academic administrators.
POSITIVE ASPECTS.
- The 5th edition of "Business Law Today, The Essentials" is well written and very readable. The presentation is visually attractive.
- It includes new material on the up-to-date issues created by e-commerce and cyber law.
- There are excellent chapter summaries highlighting, in outline form, the major topics covered in the chapter.
- There are numerous marginal references to Web sites and sources for additional help and information.
CONCERNS.
- Content appears to have been sacrificed for aesthetic white space & wide margins. This has been a continuing trend. With each "new edition" there has been less and less textual material. Major legal concepts are given a short treatment of only a sentence or two. However, the interesting and provocative discussion questions at the end of the chapters raise issues which, if they have been addressed by the courts, cannot be correctly resolved based on the information in the text. The result is students have a misconception as to how a principle works or how the majority of courts might rule. When missing information is added by the instructor, student reaction is frustration and distrust of the text.
-Whole concepts have been deleted from text between editions.(Although, thankfully, the topic of usury, a major concept in business law which was totally deleted from the 4th edition, is again mentioned in the 5th edition.)
- Case examples too often tend to focus on the more colorful, unusual exception to a controlling legal principle, rather than explaining the rationale for the majority rule or demonstrating how a principle works in daily business situations. The result is often student confusion, since one does not learn a general principle where the only example of the its application is an exceptional situation where the general rule is not apply.
- Support materials and test bank answers to questions are unreliable. While the answers given in the test bank are legally correct, about 10-15% of the time it is reported the correct answer to a test bank question cannot be extracted from the textual explanation on the cited page in "The Essentials" edition of the text.

This study guide really upset me. It just a bunch of questions, but without answer. What good does a study guide do when there is just question but no answer. If you wonder why I bought the book is that because this book bundle with the textbook, it is the package I bought, and non-refunable once you unwrapped the book. The text is an excellent book. If there is anything lower than a 1 star, I will give it to this book.
