Thought provoking tips for becoming a great salesperson.......2007-03-06
Reviewed by Stephanie Rollins for Reader Views (2/07)
Steve Chandler has written many motivational books, such as "35 Ways to Create Great Relationships" and "100 Ways to Motivate Yourself." "The Joy of Selling" is another great book by Chandler. In "The Joy of Selling," Chandler has 51 shorts chapters that include practical, easy tips for maximizing the reader's potential in sales.
There are 132 pages in "The Joy of Selling." It is easy to read. The font is large. It is divided into small chapters. These small chapters remind me of the format used for desk calendars. It is efficiently and effectively written.
One of my favorite points is that contrary to popular belief, daydreaming is a waste of time. In response to a question about the importance of women daydreaming about their goals, he replies "I think daydreaming is infantile, and I think it is demeaning to women how many motivational speakers try to manipulate women's natural creativity by encouraging dreaming and daydreaming and wishing and hoping." He explains his point, "Stop fooling around with daydreams and wishes and spinning around the bedpost singing his name like a bad Julie Andrews movie...this is an insulting recommendation to women who would like to really achieve something."
He speaks often of turning our weaknesses into a positive part of our sales persona. Do not hide the fact that you are a normal human with normal human demands and stresses. He explains how he advised a former waitress to use her experience as a waitress to improve her sales potential. She did not want to be the typical pushy salesperson, and she felt like less of a salesperson for that feeling. He explained that she did "sell" when she was a waitress. She let them try to make their decisions. She occasionally gave recommendations. He explains, "When you find your talent for selling, it will become a Socratic drawing out of the talent that is already there..."
So if you are a mother and a salesperson, why hide that like it is a dirty secret? Chances are that the person you are trying to sell to is a parent. If you are way more casual than most salespeople, why feel guilty about it? Maybe you will put your clients at ease with your lack of pretentiousness. Do I sound like I can relate to this? I can. I turned being a casual mother of four into a great asset, and I now have a large client base of casual, family-oriented people.
Steve Chandler's "The Joy of Selling" is a book of great tips. Read it a little at a time. Reading a chapter a day is great. Then you can dwell on the points in that chapter throughout the day. Decide how you can use them. This well-written book can be quite an asset in your career in sales.
EBULLIENCE PERSONAFIED.......2004-05-08
As persuasive verbally as he is in print Steve Chandler gives an upbeat and encouraging reading to his latest handbook for sellers.
As Mr. Chandler indicated with "100 Ways To Motivate Yourself" he is a great believer in possibilities and illustrates that with numerous techniques for changing a person's frame of mind, and instilling confidence.
To a great extent the same holds true for "The Joy Of Selling." Once more Mr. chandler is enthusiastic and optimistic.. He veritably exudes ebullience as he offers over 50 ideas to help stimulate sales. He expands on psychological tools and draws on his deep well of experience to drive home his beliefs.
"The Joy Of Selling" would be helpful for those just starting out, and old pros can always learn a thing or two.

Recipe for Success..........2003-01-22
Steve Chandler does an outstanding job hitting on key elements that demonstrate what is required to be successful in sales. His style of writing creates a unique way of looking at "traditional" common sense ideals of selling and can be applied to any profession.
Whenever I am having a difficult time getting motivitated, I just pick up his book and choose a chapter that will inspire me. This has already improved my sales and after giving to my salespeople I can see their improvement as well. Thank you, Steve!
The Joy of Selling.......2003-01-21
Steve Chandler, This may be your best book yet. If it's the latest, it benefits from much writing experience and refined wisdom. The only problem is that it could be titled, "The Joy of Succeeding." The principles are that generally helpful
and readable. I've just about finished the book. How do I make wholesale purchases for possible use with my clients? I teach a two-day workshop on "Effective Negotiating / Influencing." This would be a great auxiliary reference book.
The best sales book since Og Mandino!.......2003-01-19
.....I never thought there would be a better book than The Greatest Salesman in the World by Og Mandino for sheer voltage and inspiration and excitement about selling. But this is not only as inspiring as the book by the great Mandino, but it also offers so many practical ideas for how to put the joy into the process. I read from this book every day.

Women Need this Book.......2001-05-16
After attending a Tom Peters seminar, in which he recommended this book, I purchased it. He was right. There are some very good ideas in this book to help women understand and accept their role better. Women don't get it that what they are naturally good at is a major asset in the business world not a drawback! This book helped me to realize that I need to use my female traits as positive influences in my world of negotiation. I'm really better equipped at this than I once thought--and so are you.
Wasn't impressed.......1999-07-23
I've been in new homes sales for 17 years. This information sounds so "June Cleaver" it's almost laughable. Entertaining, maybe, but not a helpful sales tool.
Entertaining sales advice.......1999-04-25
An essential tool for anyone in sales. The author is witty yet helpful in bringing us back to the basics. A great resource.
ZZZZZZZZZZ.......1999-03-26
I was unfamiliar with the author but took the advice of some of your reviewers. I was disappointed greatly. These "tips and techniques" were nothing more than obvious common sense. I have been a sales professional for close to twenty years and found nothing new, impressive or cutting edge about this book. I have to wonder if Ms. Joy has ever sold anything besides this book. Would I recommend it? Perhaps for the recycling bin. Just one woman's opinion.
I found this book to be extremely helpful........1998-12-11
I was very impressed with the clear thinking and insight reflected in this book concerning the special needs of women in the `sales arena.' Very few books address the issues that women must face in a field that has been dominated by men (in the past). This book provided me with the confidence needed to create a successful business. I recommend this book to anyone starting out in business, (including men), and those who are seasoned in the field. We can all learn from this publication. THANX!!!!

The old school of thinking about selling is "Always be Closing." The new way of selling is "Always be Connected." Just What I Needed.......2004-05-05
After reading this book, I found many of the words and phrases from the book creeping into my head during difficult sales situations as well as person situations. This book provided me with several new perspectives on sales even though I've been in the field for many years. It was just the sort of optimistic refocusing I needed at this point in my career. I would recommend this book to anyone who is seeking more than just better sales numbers -- it is for those who want success in conjunction with continued personal growth.
A nice read but nothing new.......2004-05-04
I bought this book because Tim Sanders, author of "Love is the Killer App" recommended it. I wanted to like this book but I'm sorry to say there's nothing new in it. Save your money for the next Seth Godin book.
The 7 Most Powerful Selling Secrets: Soar Your way to Succes.......2004-04-06
This book is an inspiring read. I have used it in trainings and as gifts for all my employees. Enjoy it, share it and use it.
This is a must in your personal and professional library.
Surprisingly Powerful!.......2004-03-16
I recently prayed and asked for guidance about what steps to take in regard to moving into the next phase of my business, and surprisingly one of those steps involved reading Mr. Livesay's book. And so I did. What I learned about myself was almost as priceless as the secrets so passionately shared through this very timely book. I was challenged, humbled and encouraged as I discovered and/or re-discovered each new secret. I now see why I was directed to read it. The Affirmations alone go to the heart of each matter they address, whether it's doubt, fear, rejection, etc., and provide words that are fresh and quick to comfort, build up, rejuvenate and empower. In fact, the entire book reads as from Mr. Livesay's heart to ours. I look forward to soaring to success, not only with my business, but in my personal life as well, as I continue to allow myself to be moved with compassion, kindness and love.
The 7 Most Powerful Selling secrets.......2004-03-16
I love this book. I am so happy that I found this book and had the chance to read it. A friend told me about it and the things that I have learned from John Livesay are worth a lot more than what I paid for the book. If you can pnly read one book this year it should be a book that will "better" you, and thia book is the best.

Customer Reviews:
a refreshing and much needed book.......2007-03-29
I really enjoyed "Selling Joy" for several reasons. It is a very unique combination of topics, but the topics really are quite related and tied together by Adelberg. As he describes his life in sales, he very nicely blends it with insights about life and achieving happiness. The effect is a book that really teaches life lessons, it's just that sales is the conduit through which the author imparts the message.
Adelberg's message of "living in the moment" is simple yet very profound.
Highly recommended.

From the supplier: A number of court decisions have explored employee remedies in cases of employer misrepresentations about fringe benefits. In general, ERISA preemption has defeated estoppel or misrepresentation claims brought by employees against employers or insurance companies. Claims against employers over once promised postretirement medical benefits have proliferated but have commonly ended in rulings favoring the employer. Courts have noted that employers reserved the right to amend such benefits; that employees did not have a permanent, vested right to their medical benefits; and that employers did not have a fiduciary liability to provide lifetime health benefits.

From the supplier: The insurance industry strongly opposes the reelection campaign of Georgia Insurance Commissioner Tim Ryles, the controversial regulator who has alienated many members of the Georgia General Assembly. From the supplier: The debate on patients' right to physician-assisted suicide has picked up steam. The New York State Task Force on Life and the Law recommended against legalizing physician-assisted suicide for fear such a step might lead doctors to prescribe lethal levels of drugs for patients rather than attempting to relieve their suffering. After the report, Quill v. Koppell was filed in a New York federal court seeking to overturn a state law forbidding doctor-assisted suicide.

From the supplier: A 48-page complaint against Insurance Commissioner Tim Ryles has been reduced to a single allegation that he violated state campaign laws by the Georgia State Ethics Commission handling the imbroglio. The complaint alleges that Ryles accepted campaign contributions from companies and individuals regulated by his department. The Ethics Commission will hold a meeting to hear the charge and is seeking input from the state Attorney General.
