Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Shallow and Redundant.......2002-09-23

This book is absolutely useless unless it is your very initial introduction to the concept of a focus group. It is tremendously shallow, sophomoric and uninformative for professional marketers. Redundancies abound in this book, and much time is spent bemoaning focus group facilities' incompetence and other extraneous factors that only tangentially related to the real subject. Mr. Greenbaum offers no actual case studies to illuminate the utility of focus groups. His examples are vague and barely scratch the surface. It is unfortunate that the field of qualitative research is tainted by pseudo-experts of his ilk.

4 out of 5 stars Detailed & comprehensive Focus Group guideline.......2002-02-22

Most of the Marketing Research text books have only mentioned the Purpose, Process and Management of Focus Group in a superficial manner. It is difficult to get to know the examples of Focus Group. This book can presents information on conducting market research with focus groups, discuss how to select and evaluate moderators and facilities and using the latest technology and innovative techniques to obtain more useful information.
It's a clear, logical and easy-to-read book that is highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars Where's the beef?.......2005-07-18

I purchased this book in the digital version, being too impatient to wait for delivery. I soon found that supreme patience was required to ferret out the information I was looking for.

First the good news: the (e)book is thorough and structured. A lot of valuable details are brought to focus. If you are seeking information on the mechanics of organizing and running a focus group, I think this would be a good start.

However, I also want to know how to collect data from a Focus Group, and how to interpret the data. This it turns out is a research project in and of itself, since this information is scattered in various chapters, and the formal discussion only begins on page 87.

I eventually found the information I was looking for, although the level of detail was a bit thin. I just find it fascinating that a book intended to serve the advertising industry has it's punchline on page 87.

4 out of 5 stars Great as a refresher or for a first time moderator.......2000-03-06

I purchased this book to refresh my skills when organizing a series of focus groups with very diverse demographics. Edmunds allowed me to brush up on key techniques, but also painted a great visual for the those on my team that were focus group virgins.

            Product Description

In 1992, over 100,000 focus groups were conducted in the United States. In an era when business survival depends on finding a market niche and pleasing the customer, focus groups are a vital method of testing new products, services, advertising, and packaging and an indispensable way to elicit attitudes, preferences, habits, and suggestions directly from the customer. Thomas L. Greenbaum has been a leader in focus group research for more than twenty years. Addressing organizations that hire focus group professionals, Greenbaum explains how to select and evaluate moderators and facilities, and how to control the costs of research. For marketers who conduct their own focus groups, he reviews the latest technology, including computer images and satellite videotransmissions, and explains how and when to use expressive drawing, conceptual mapping, laddering, and other innovative techniques to yield more and better information. Greenbaum predicts the number of focus groups will continue to surge, to perhaps 200,000 a year by the late 1990s. Current users of focus groups will rely more on qualitative research, he asserts, and many new users, including service firms, nonprofit organizations, and government agencies, will discover the value of focus groups. In addition to new clients and new techniques, the industry also faces new threats, including recruitment scams and lowered professional standards, that could undermine the credibility of all focus groups. Greenbaum guides clients and practitioners in meeting these challenges.

                  Book Description

The 1997 Asian Crisis principally affected Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Korea, as well as other East Asian countries heavily dependent on intra-regional trade. Banks and other financial institutions quickly become insolvent, and heavily indebted industrial firms went bankrupt. Many of these firms were affiliated with the business groups of this region, yet most groups did not immediately collapse, indeed they proved remarkably robust, some surviving and even prospering. This book examines these East Asian business groups and their subsequent restructuring following the Asian Crisis. East Asian nations embarked on very different trajectories to this common external shock. The Asian Crisis affected the inter-relationships among the socio-cultural environment, the state, and the market of each country quite differently and had distinct effects on the operations of these countries' business groups. This slow yet divergent pattern of development provides evidence against theories of rapid global convergence. Yet East Asian business groups face an uncertain future. Foreign investors' influence has increased substantially since the crisis, as East Asian governments had to accommodate their demands to keep attracting foreign capital. Governments supervise banks more closely and have loosened restrictions on mergers and hostile takeovers, further strengthening the discipline of the market. Various entry barriers that had inhibited foreign multinationals from competing in national markets were lifted, exposing business groups to intensified foreign competition. Under these new conditions, business groups in East Asia should reconfigure their business structures and adjust their corporate governance systems to regain momentum for further growth. Business groups will continue to be important vehicles for the sustained future growth of this region, and this book presents a substantial amount of new data on this, which will be of interest to academics, researchers, and advanced students of East Asian business, and business practitioners working within the region.

                  Book Description

The Asian crisis has sparked a thoroughgoing reappraisal of current international financial norms, the policy prescriptions of the International Monetary Fund, and the adequacy of the existing financial architecture. To draw proper policy conclusions from the crisis, however, it is necessary to understand its domestic politics. In this study, political scientist Stephan Haggard focuses on the most seriously affected countries-Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia, and Thailand-while also drawing lessons from those economies, such as Taiwan, that escaped the most severe distress.

Haggard focuses on the political economy of the crisis, emphasizing the longer-run problems of moral hazard and corruption, the politics of crisis management and the political consequences of severe economic downturn. Looking forward, he focuses on two critical policy issues: changes in social safety nets in the crisis countries and efforts at corporate and financial restructuring.

                  Book Description

In the summer of 1997, a tidal wave of economic problems swept across Asia. Currencies plummeted, banks failed, GNP stagnated, unemployment soared, and exports stalled. In short, the vaunted "Asian Economic Miracle" became the "Asian Economic Crisis"--with serious repercussions for nations and markets around the world.

While the headlines are still fresh, a group of experts on the region presents the first account to focus on the political causes and implications of the crisis. The events of 199798 involved not just property values, financial flows, portfolio makeup, and debt ratios, they argue, but also the power relationships that shaped those economic indicators.

As they examine the domestic, regional, and international politics that underlay the economic collapse, the authors analyze the reasons why the crisis affected the nations of Asia in radically different ways. The authors also consider whether the crisis indicates a radical change in Asia's economic future.

                    Book Description

The economic crises in Asia at the turn of the millennium changed the innovation and business production systems of China, Malaysia, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand, and Taiwan. This investigation follows several different industries, including semiconductors, automobiles, and hard disk drives. It explores the approaches that Asian nations have taken to building a strong technological and economic base for their respective industries from technonationalism to technoglobalism. It asks if the Asian economic miracle is over, or whether these countries are reinventing their economies.

                    Download Description

In mid-May 1997, a financial crisis erupted in Asia after an attack by private investors on the baht, the Thai currency. The crisis spread quickly across the region, where investor confidence plummeted, resulting in massive capital outflows, stock market collapses, high unemployment, and even insurrection. The Asian 'economic miracle' that had stimulated so much awe and even dread, now invoked pity and apprehension in greater measure. The contributors to this volume investigated change in the innovation and production systems of Asian states in response to economic and political upheaval. They conducted empirical studies of several regional industries - autos, semiconductors, and hard disk drives - and seven different national economies: China, Malaysia, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand, and Taiwan. In the face of crisis and global competition, the Asian states superimposed change at the margins, seeking unique technohybrid solutions to build capabilities to compete in local, regional, and even global markets.

                      Book Description

The long postwar economic boom in Japan ended in the early 1990s. Since then, the Japanese economy has stagnated and a series of reforms have failed to initiate economic growth. Maswood focuses on the period after the Asian Crisis and looks at the measures that have been taken to revitalize the banking sector and to overcome regulatory and administrative impediments to economic growth. Including analysis of the latest data from Japan, this is an important study of Japan's political economy and the implications of Japan's economic slowdown for regional and global economic prosperity.

                      Book Description

This book takes a cross-disciplinary look at the financial markets of emerging markets in Latin America. The author wants to disassemble the black box that is the financial market: what are the motivations and interests of the various actors, both institutional and individual; how do these interact with each other; how does this information help us understand the Mexican crisis in the 90s and the current crisis in Argentina? The author has conducted extensive interviews with brokers, asset managers, economists, strategists, and analysts in the US, UK, Europe, and Latin America, providing significant material for this study.

                      5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive.......2003-10-23

With the search among investors for higher yield and with the asset class being one of the notable outperformers in the recent equity market upturn, Santiso's book on emerging markets (notably Latam) could not have arrived at a more opportune time. Generally speaking, it overviews the most significant empirical findings associated with emerging markets over the past two to three years, locating them within the context of a number of distinct themes. So if one is looking for a comprehensive treatment of the asset class, notably from an academic's perspective, this book is well worth the read. The editor's synopsis is accurate in terms of its overview of the main contents of the book.
The only problem I had with the piece is the editing job. There are a few spelling mistakes, misplaced uses of punctuation, and the odd sentence that must be read several times in order to realise its main import. I suspect if a proper editing job was undertaken in the main text (the footnotes are superb and very informative)the quality of the book would be enhanced significantly.
The book is probably of less use to practitioners but this was probably not Santiso's intent. In any case, thoughtful fund managers or equity strategists would clearly find the book informative, probably compelling them to conduct further readings in the literature noted in the footnotes.

                          Book Description

The impact of the Asia crisis has contributed to the debate about the need for regulation of global markets. This book outlines the events leading up to and during the Financial Crisis of 1997 and assesses the responses of the financial contagion. The potential for economic reform is discussed and the willingness of legislators in South East Asia to create a new legal infrastructure to control business is studied. The discussion moves to the political arena, where the extensive use of the internet as a new medium is discussed using Malaysia as a case in point. The next section focuses on specific themes relating to labour, capital and political business. It studies the response of Malaysian labour to the financial and political crisis. Another contribution explores the tourism industry in Bali, and Indonesian economic and social meltdown. Finally, it examines the vulnerability of fast growth in the Thai telecommunications industry and the development of third world multinationals is assessed. Unfolding tensions between local and expatriate staff as a result of multinational corporate restructuring are explored.

                              Book Description

As Southeast and Northeast Asia recover from the Asian crisis and return to a state of growth, the authors of this book assess the lessons to be learned from the crisis to achieve sustainable development in the future. While the importance of each factor contributing to the crisis varies from country to country, their collective experience has created unprecedented turmoil in current thinking on development policy.

The authors argue that the major schools of thought need paradigm changes in the wake of the crisis. Those who believe that a `strong state' or system of semi-democracy is essential for economic growth have been disproved by the sudden collapse of these economies. These countries must now adapt to the fact that society must be open to ideas and democratize its polity to achieve innovation-driven sustainable development. Those who used the success of East Asian economies as a vindication of the neo-classical orthodoxy, referred to as the `Washington consensus', must now see the follies of progressive withdrawal of the government from the economic sphere and of unfettered flows of short-term capital.

This book offers a timely and reflective analysis of the Asian financial crisis and brings together a detailed overview of the different and often competing responses within the countries of the region. It will be welcomed by students and scholars with an interest in Asian economics, development studies, international political economy, and international relations.
