5 out of 5 stars Big Bang for the Buck: The 12-Minute MBA for 12 Bucks.......2001-11-01

I really enjoyed the book. It is a a no-nonsense, common sense approach to leadership, time management, communication skills, strategic planning, etc. When I was studying for my 6th year in Administration and Supervision (a required education degree for CT administrators), many of these topics were discussed.

This book applies to ALL who desire refining their leadership, business, and professional skills. The market expands well beyond the medical profession. Perhaps The 12-Minute MBA for Doctors should have been called The 12-Minute MBA for Professionals. Actually, when Charles Johnson and Andy Thibault write the sequels, they can be entitled The 12-Minute MBA for ________. Educators, Engineers, Attorneys, etc. There is a market for those books. I am sending this review and my personal recommendation to all members of the CT Council of Language Teachers for their dissemination to World Language teachers in CT. I look forward to reading the sequels myself!

Self-help manuals rarely impact professions other than their targeted audiences. "The 12-Minute MBA for Doctors," however, shatters that myth by providing practical skills for any novice trying to survive in today's chaotic business world.

You don't have to be a medical professional to benefit from this fluent and provocative book. Anyone who doesn't know how to negotiate a lease, hire staff or deal with an insurance company will learn how to build a successful business.

Written by two Litchfield, Connecticut friends and neighbors, "The 12-Minute MBA for Doctors" is a lively collaboration between Charles Johnson and Andy Thibault. Johnson's firm, Medical Education Training Associates of Woodbury, Connecticut, helps doctors, bankers and other professionals run their businesses.

A couple of years ago, Johnson delivered a 12-minute talk before the Society for University Surgeons in New Orleans. After several colleagues asked for help running their businesses, one of them suggested Johnson call his program "The 12-Minute MBA for Doctors." A book was born.

Thibault, a columnist for The Connecticut Law Tribune, is an award-winning feature writer and nationally known investigative reporter.

Together, Johnson and Thibault provide punchy insights in eight chapters on such practical business skills as persuasive communication, team building and conflict resolution. One section in the chapter on communication is applicable to the home front as well as the business world.

Johnson asks: "What are the first three answers you hear from your significant other when you get home. For most people, it's three words - fine, fine, chicken. Why is that? Simple. The questions you asked were probably: How was your day? How are the kids? What's for dinner?" Not exactly great conversation starters.

"After I spent a day with one of my sales managers," Johnson continues, "I was invited to his house for dinner. We talked about a strategy before we went home. We walked in the door and he says hello to his wife. He says, 'Tell me about your day.' She started to say, "Fine," but then she heard his question.'Well, the kids and I went shopping and we went to the park and we played on the swing, and.' He could actually hear information she was imparting and was able to give her positive feedback."

This is just one communication example of trying to persuade people with your people power instead of your position power. Communication, the book notes, is one of the five components of a successful team, along with leadership, defined roles, clear objectives and trust. Specific chapters deal with negotiating skills, interviewing and hiring skills, understanding financial issues, strategic and tactical planning, teamwork and leadership.

As Johnson and Thibault detail, surgeons are still trained like blacksmiths. Although they are at the pinnacle of their profession, they tend to know little about business - after four years of college, four years of medical school and then five more years of residency and fellowship education. They are turned loose in their early to mid-30s and expected to run a business that is not run by their peers.

Today, health care is run more and more by business people - not doctors. Hospital administrators tend to be business people. Insurance companies have everything to do with the running of health care today. Yet the highly skilled physician, untrained in management and economic matters, has to deal on an everyday basis with people who run business. How does he get his business started and survive?

The answers are in this book. But readers from many other disciplines will benefit significantly from any 12-minute helping of this management primer.

3 out of 5 stars Mechanics are solid opinions are very left-wing .......2007-10-22

This book is a very good reference for how these two very important entitlement programs work in as much as the text sticks to that objective. The authors could not resist intermingling a very biased and at times deceptive opinion into the text. The book bashes social security privatization from the point of view that only government can be trusted to handle a person's pension and that private citizens will only be taken advantage of if ever allowed to invest their own money into greedy corporations - what does this have to do with the text's stated purpose. The same approach was taken of Medicare Prescription D which is referred to as a huge corporate giveaway to the pharmaceuticals because the Medicare Administration was not allowed to "negotiate" prices. The latter is quite deceptive as the government does not ever negotiate prices with the private sector; it regulates prices. Can anyone deny that many doctors refuse accepting medicare-only patients because the prices set by Medicare do not reflect market rates for services? Can anyone deny that Medicare has oft times set prices for services based on budgetary constraints as opposed to seeking the best quality service? These authors certainly can. They also bashed Medicare Prescription D while at the same time having to acknowledge it is very successful but only "for the short run" as they say because in the end the profit motivated pharmaceuticals will raise their prices over time at the expense of seniors. This "government is all good and private sector is all bad lingo" is irrelevant to understanding how the programs themselves work as currently defined. Such commentary belongs in another text devoted to socialist propaganda. My objective as a 42-year old is to understand the entitlements to aid my retiring parents as best I can.

    Book Description

"For 20 years the people's source on Medicare and Social Security."

The new prescription drug plan is coming in 2006!

    • Beginning January 1, 2006, Medicare beneficiaries who fail to enroll in the new Medicare prescription drug plan (known as Medicare Part D) may miss out on thousands of dollars in savings.

    • Medicare beneficiaries who enroll in the wrong prescription drug plan (one that doesn't cover their particular medications, for example) may cost themselves thousands of dollars in out-of-pocket costs before being permitted to switch plans.

    • Most Medicare beneficiaries who do not enroll in the new drug plan by May 15, 2006 will be penalized when they later enroll -- the penalty is 1% per month in additional premium cost for every month they were not enrolled, and this higher cost is permanent.

The chapter on Medicare (Chapter 11) contains a whole new section discussing Part D prescription drug coverage. This section discusses eligibility, premiums & deductibles, restrictions on coverage, and deciding which plan is right for you.

The chapter on Medicare Procedures (Chapter 12) also has a new section about enrollment & procedures. It discusses enrolling and switching plans, exceptions for coverage (for example, getting the plan to approve a drug that's not on its formulary), and appeals of adverse coverage decisions.

Also, the new prescription drug coverage affects Medigap and managed care plans, discussed in Chapters 13 and 14.

An essential tool for everyone over 55, this book shows readers how to cut through the bureaucracy to get their slab of the pie. Social Security, Medicare & Government Pensions clearly explains what the different benefits are, and shows you how to claim what you've earned, including:

    - Social Security retirement and disability benefits - Social Security dependents and survivor benefits - Supplemental Security Income - federal, state and local government pensions - Medicare and Medicaid - Medigap managed care plans - veterans benefits = prescription drug coverage

Completely updated to provide the latest information and changes in benefits, this plain-English book is a must-have for anyone who is retired or about to be.

Material sees good, but you get regular doses of political opinion on profits, "big business" and how wounderful more goverment might be. Tear out the pages of political garbarge and the book rates 4 stars. Oh yes, the editors make a modest profit on the book. Shame ... shame!

2 out of 5 stars VERY BASIC.... VERY DISAPPOINTED!.......2006-09-29

As a government employee, I bought this book hoping it would provide some good tips on the federal retirement system. This book may help the new or very unimformed employee, but that's it. Some of the information on government benefits was just plain wrong, which is why it only gets two stars from me. As an example, it states a FERS employee can contribute a maximum of 10% to the Thrift Savings Plan each year. Wrong! An employee has been able to contribute 15% for years and I believe there is no limit in 2006. This is not good information for a book that was updated in February 2006!

                Book Description

This digital document is an article from Planning, published by American Planning Association on July 1, 1993. The length of the article is 2984 words. The page length shown above is based on a typical 300-word page. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Digital Locker immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.

From the supplier: Planning is not a high-income profession, so planners should invest carefully for their retirement. Since many of them work in the public sector, they might be eligible for a 403b salary reduction plan, which allows them to defer taxes on income. Consulting firms might consider setting up a simplified employee pension retirement account (SEP-IRA), which allows employees to handle investment details. The benefits of IRAs and 401(k) plans are discussed.

                Book Description

Three proposals for Personal Retirement Accounts were put forth by the Committee to Strengthen Social Security, appointed by President Bush. This book provides a detailed and candid assessment of those proposals - differentiating the good from the bad.

In addition, How Social Security Picks Your Pocket exposes how Social Security is implemented - who wins, who loses, and how the game is played; and offers suggestions for improvements to the system.

Issue-by-issue, the book gives a guided tour of a system of staggering waste and blatant inequities. You'll learn how average retirees are robbed of benefits - benefits that are redirected to wealthier, non-paying beneficiaries. You'll learn about the millions of people who pay lip-service to Social Security - but pay nothing else. They don't participate in the system described as their "worst nightmare."

The tour includes a visit with the teachers who become janitors for just one day, to qualify for $100,000 in Social Security benefits - each. The book also reviews the amazing 115% tax, inflicted on working seniors. Yes, these people can effectively pay more in tax than they earn.

The tour also includes the growing disability programs. Are you a hypochondriac? Good! You just may qualify for disability benefits. (Check out section 12.07 of the Social Security "Blue Book.") Did you know that one third of all workers getting disability benefits claim to have a mental impairment? Are you up on the latest designer diseases? And, did you realize that only one in every five hundred disabled workers recovers and returns to work - despite our miracle cures, technology, and "reasonable accommodations"?

You'll need your "hard hat" when visiting Supplemental Security Income (SSI), which is a welfare program run by Social Security. It's been classified by the GAO as "high risk" due to its habit of paying benefits first, and asking questions later (or never). SSI has its very own disability program, and should be in the Guinness book for once paying benefits to 181 members of one family - simultaneously. In this program, more than sixty percent of disabled beneficiaries are paid for claimed mental impairments.

Be advised that the tour includes some unsavory neighborhoods, rife with crime and corruption. There is a discussion of the different schemes and scams used to rip-off the system, and the new and threatening trends on the horizon. The Social Security Administration claims that it can't estimate the amount of fraud in its programs. This book challenges that claim.

Of course, what Social Security tour would be complete without a discussion of insolvency, the trust fund, and Personal Retirement Accounts (PRAs)? Is the program really broke? Would PRAs help, or hurt? You'll get the lowdown on these matters, plus insights into a great alternative plan that has been serving retirees longer than Social Security, right here in America. Comparing the benefits of this alternative plan to those of Social Security is an enlightening, if sobering, experience.

The final stop on the tour is the author's dream plan for Social Security. It's a little different than any other proposal. Is it "Shangri-La" or Sham-ri-La? That's for you to decide.

This book made me think a lot about how the Social Security program is run. There are many good recommendations in this book - worthy of serious consideration.

4 out of 5 stars Generally, I liked this book.......2004-07-20

I was able to follow most of this book without too much trouble. The author has done a good job of quantifying the waste in SS. It's worth the read.

5 out of 5 stars Read this book!.......2004-01-03

The author did a good job of showing why we need to update Social Security. Benefits are transferred illogically. Why give extra benefits to rich people at the expense of middle class workers? Also, the stuff about the Texas teacher scandal is infuriating. This rip off should be stopped!
