Customer Reviews:
A great read.......2002-06-14
A great, motivating read that was both inspiring and entertaining. Witty writing kept me reading, the interview with the accountant provided crucial information that is often overlooked. A book that still applies, even after the great dot.com bust of 2000.
An Excellent Resource For Earning Extra Money.......2002-03-27
This book is a great resource for earning a little extra money on the side via the internet.....I'm pulling down an amazing $500 a month selling [stuff] I don't know anybody who can't use extra money. And this book makes it so easy.
Fast & Furious Reading.......2002-01-29
Definitely a one-hour reader. This condensed version of the original manuscript is informative and enlightening. Really makes you want to stop mid-stream and go right for your computer. Congrads on this writing! A must have for all potential freelancers!

Bankruptcy Investing - How to Profit From Distressed Companies
ASIN: 1932159185 |
Book Description
Recently, reorganizations, restructurings, and bankruptcies have replaced IPOs as the common financial vehicle of the times. However, these distressed companies can still provide an avenue for profitable investing. This eagerly anticipated new reference helps guide you through this treacherous landscape in order to master the multi-move chess-like strategies required to achieve financially advantageous results for your portfolio. It is the most up-to-date and comprehensive book on the market to deal with the myriad of issues surrounding a distressed company.
Providing theoretical and practical insight, Distressed Debt Analysis: Strategies for Speculative Investors presents a conceptual, but not overly technical, outline of the financial and bankruptcy law context in which restructurings take place. The book covers the broader financial environment of the reorganization and the basic process of investment analysis and investment strategies. The author uses numerous real-world examples and case studies to emphasize important concepts and critical issues.
The developments that have created these extraordinary investment opportunities have also created tremendous demand for professionals with experience and knowledge in the restructuring process. Distressed Debt Analysis: Strategies for Speculative Investors addresses the complete knowledge needs of investors and professionals in the burgeoning world of financially distressed companies. It is perfect for bankruptcy departments of law firms, restructuring advisory groups, turnaround consulting firms, and reorganization and distressed securities departments of investment banks.
Customer Reviews:
Invaluable.......2007-05-07
Extremely helpful in preparing our new hires - it is required reading. This book will be a desk reference for years to come.
Great & Comprehensive Practical Review.......2007-01-05
Unlike many academic books, this is a practical analysis of distressed debt, the bankruptcy process, and all the related financial, accounting and valuation issues that arise in this context. It is well written and well organized.
Some other books on the topic go into significantly more detail in esoteric issues; however this book is a must for a grounded detailed understanding of the topic. I have recommended this book to a number of colleagues in the industry and all were equally appreciative.
must buy.......2006-03-14
It's a must buy for people in high-yield/distressed analysis. I was suggested this book at my first day at work.
A Complete Introduction .......2005-11-02
The premise of this book is really quite simple.
Identify securities (bonds, stocks or whatever) from companies that are in trouble. Buy these securities when other investors are ignoring or even selling them. Then when the company gets turned around, you can make a fortune. What you don't want to do is buy these securities only to see the companies go out of business so that your securities are now completely worthless.
As you might guess from the title, this book is about how to analyze distressed companies that offer this potential investment path. It covers virtually every aspect of finding such companies, determining if the proposed investment is feasible, explains the differences in the company going through one of the various bankruptcy procedures, the legal and financial due diligence issues, and more. The final result is a set of basic investment strategies and analytical techniques, complete with case studies and referrences to numerous real-world examples to emphasize important concepts and critical issues.
Along with the book is a companion web site that offers additional information, checklists, sample letters, and more.
This book is a complete introduction to this new and emerging field.
Valuable insights, useful commentary, and professionally written........2005-10-22
Like many of us, perhaps you've owned some bonds that have fallen into junk status or worse, distress/bankruptcy. In most cases, did you throw up your arms either selling at a loss or confused by smallprint mail solicitations? Stephen Moyer is an absolute pro and de-mystifies what some may think of as a blackbox only understood by investment specialists, asset pirates, and/or bankruptcy lawyers.
Conversely, if you are a professional and seeking to augment your understanding, Moyer provides insightful commentary on areas like negotiation leverage points, key area to control, legal bounds of control, pre & post-bankruptcy valuation approaches, and comparisons to real deals done recently in the marketplace. Most of his examples are from 1998-2003, and he tries to use contemporary issues to highlight arguments. Unfortunately, you will not find the most recent Bankruptcy Code reforms which commenced Oct 17, 2005. For instance, he states on page 77 that management can "...extend the [bankruptcy] exclusivity period virtually indefinitely...", which today is essentially limited to 18 months. Although a shortcoming to the book, any professional investor would have access to materials to become up-to-date on the recent reforms.
Moyer's CV reads long: Stanford Law, Chicago MBA, CFA, CPA, and Drexel Lambert heritage. Obviously, he knows what he is talking about. His writing interests do seem to be lawyer-ly; for instance, he spends an inordinate amount of time explaining issues around confidentiality agreements and duties. But, I appreciated his clear and concise style and sentences. No arrogance in his style nor is he trying to sell his current firm.
Excellent book. Strongly recommend despite the price.

Customer Reviews:
A perfect bankruptcy reference.......2007-01-02
Mr. Alderman has done a superb job covering the most important aspects of Chapter 11 reorganization. The book is a valuable guide for any business professional interested in following the corporate bankruptcy process. As the Director of Bankruptcy Services for a national consulting firm, I regularly train accountants on bankruptcy issues, and I have found this book to be a perfect resource for that effort.
I liked this Book.......2006-10-13
This book offers just the right balance of a usefull introduction with a strong glossary and key code sections. Its compact size makes it great for throwing in the briefcase for a read on the train or use in court. I would recommend this book to any business person who might need a good introduction to Chapter 11 Business Reorganizations.
A Great Reference Source With A Wealth of Insightful Information.......2006-10-09
This book does a really nice job of explaining how Chapter 11 Business Reorganizations work. The Glossary and Bankruptcy Cope sections make this a great reference source. Whether considering the strategic acquisition of assets from a business in Chapter 11, or working with insolvency experts to deal with a major account debtor, this book is a great resource.

Book Description
The book deals with the design of bilateral contractual arrangements for OTC (over-the-counter)-traded derivatives transactions. These arrangements govern inter alia the rights and obligations of the parties in the event of a default. The main provisions of the widely used ISDA Master Agreements as well as their relation to insolvency law are described in the text. The formal analysis focuses on the trade-off between protecting the interests of the non-defaulting party and enabling the failed counterparty to reorganize its liabilities in order to avoid inefficient liquidations. The results of the book challenge some widely held beliefs about the benefits of certain provisions commonly used in master agreements. The analysis also suggests implications for the pricing of risky derivatives transactions containing these provisions.

Excellent overview of the bankruptcy process.......2004-01-23
This is an excellent book for the non-lawyer that needs to get up to speed quickly on the bankruptcy process. I found myself as the business person managing the creditor side of a bankruptcy and this book helped me become fluent in the process with minimal delay.
The book is written in a light manner and is a rather quick read with a lot of detail available in appendices.

This coursebook takes a finance-oriented approach to corporate bankruptcy and can be used either in basic Bankruptcy courses (that do not attend to individual bankruptcy) or in advanced Bankruptcy courses. The student will learn not only the major elements of corporate reorganization in chapter 11 of the Bankruptcy Code, but also the major facets of bankruptcy that influence financing transactions. The hidden message behind these materials is how to understand complex financial deal-making and how to integrate finance with law, in the context of bankruptcy.

Book Description
Seventeen substantial papers presented at an innovative 1991 conference to study and discuss corporate distressed restructurings and bankruptcies, including bankruptcy costs and distressed firm values, investing and trading, and strategic issues.
Customer Reviews:
A Real Snore But Worth The Extra Effort.......2000-12-29
This book is a collection of academic papers on the subject of corporate bankruptcy and distress. The writers present an excellent but somewhat repetitive body of information in a very passive manner. As such, the book is a real snore! So if you choose to read it, drink an extra large Starbucks coffee and bear down. I found reading it well worth the effort. Given the real human issues, hardships, brinkmanship, and huge volume of case work involved in bankruptcy and distress, the subject matter could have been presented in a much more entertaining manner.
Too Academic.......2000-02-02
The book is a composite of ideas presented at a conference, is far too academic and fails to capture the concept of "Investment Opportunities" as the title suggests. Although information and data regarding the violation of absolute priority is interesting it is repeated over and over again by different authors. Repeative information is a problem since each chapter is a discussion by a different author.
Too dated and theoretical to be practical use.......2000-01-24
This book was originally published in 1991. The reprint has not been updated so the material is very dated. I found little of practical use in this book and would recommend Bankruptcy Investing by Ben Branch instead.
