Customer Reviews:
Buy Direct from SMPS, these sellers are rip-off artists!!!!.......2007-02-06
This is a good thorough book covering the six domains of marketing and absolutely essential for studying for the national SMPS certification test. I love Amazon, but do NOT buy this particular book from the re-sellers here (Amazon itself doesn't carry the book). You can buy this book NEW for $62.95 from SMPS' website, and avoid being raped by these rip-off resellers (cheapest was $95 and it was used!)

Customer Reviews:
More of an introduction than a handbook.......2006-01-10
OK as a starter, for someone who knows zero about media, but falls short of the mark for anyone who is a practitioner in a media-related industry. The first 100 pages are spent on "context" which might be helpful for readers who know nothing about marketing either (Ms. Katz feels it necessary to tell us what the 4Ps are...), but this leaves very little for anyone who actually needs to DO media buying, planning or research.
The Media Handbook a Handy Reference to Media Planning.......2003-06-19
Helen Katz' The Media Handbook is an easy to follow guide which will help a wide range of marketing/advertising students and practicioners gain a basic understanding of the media planning process. I feel comfortable making this observation as a former media planning executive at DDB Chicago advertising agency and now as instructor teaching two media planning courses at Loyola University Chicago.
This book begins with chapters on "What is Media" and "Media in the Marketing Context" then moves through the steps of the media planning process before it concludes with chapters on media buying and media plan evaluation/accountability. It provides a good overview of media planning yet spares the reader exhaustive explanations of media terminology and media math calculations found in may college media textbooks.
Author Katz has authored this 3rd Edition to stay current with the rapidly changing media environment. To a reasonable extent, she has succeeded although today's digital media technology changes are occuring at such a breakneck pace that any media textbook is somewhat out of date a week after it has been written.
A broad cross section of the marketing/advertising community will find The Media Handbook to be a useful reference source in understanding the role of media planning in the marketing communications process.

Book Description
Marketing scholars have a long history of conducting research on how marketing effects the welfare of society. A significant body of knowledge has developed to look beyond marketing’s impact on the corporate bottom line toward the affects of marketing on consumer sovereignty, public health, economic growth, and other aspects of societal welfare. The large and growing amount of research has become fragmented and diverse. There is a need for a volume to pull all of this research together to facilitate the assessment of what we have learned and what we need to study further. This volume fills that need!
Handbook of Marketing and Society presents the first comprehensive, in-depth examination of scholarly research on how marketing effects societal welfare. Drawing on the talents of an outstanding team of contributors, the editors have assembled key reviews, analyses, and perspectives on a broad range of research topics including deceptive advertising, warning labels, trademark infringement, antitrust enforcement, environmental labels, privacy protection, social marketing, and corporate societal marketing. Each chapter covers, in a purposeful way, a different path through which marketing can affect societal welfare. Future research needs are identified in each chapter in order to help focus marketing thinking and marketing practice serve society more effectively.
Professors, graduate students, and others interested in marketing’s role in society will find this a valuable resource for graduate courses and an excellent guidebook for future research.

Book Description
Following World War II, the U.S. manufacturing sector emerged as the dominant industrial force in the world in virtually all areas, including productivity, market share, innovations, and capital investments. Though other countries have caught up with and surpassed the United States in many industries, Romesh Diwan and Chandana Chakraborty argue that America can recapture its dominant role by moving forcefully into high-technology industries. In this work, they examine competitiveness in a range of high-technology enterprises, analyzing the industries as an aggregate as well as through three specific examples: semi-conductors, telecommunications, and computers. The authors provide a complete understanding of the technical changes and developments that are taking place in U.S. high technology, and offer guidance to policy makers in promoting competitive strength. Their work defines and quantifies the high-tech industrial sector of the U.S, economy, and analyzes the productivity of this sector by utilizing a translog cost function, which provides information about the structure of the input-output relations in a particular industry. Using these functions, Diwan and Chakraborty answer quantitatively a number of questions relating to the growth of various inputs, productivities, and outputs, which lead to conclusions regarding the structure of production, costs, and capacity in U.S. industry. Their conclusions--that technical change is biased in the main in favor of capital and material, and that capital and skilled labor are complements--are consistent with new ideas and theories in the field. This work will be a valuable reference source for professional economists and policy experts, as well as for scholars and students in international trade, finance, and development.

Book Description
As Japanese companies have become more globalized in their markets and production facilities, the basis of their competitiveness has also changed. Whereas the earlier growth of these companies was based on cost-effective production of standardized products, they now compete through market responsiveness, product quality, and innovation that embodies their own original technology. This book argues that Japanese MNEs (multinational enterprises) now approach the vital processes of technology generation and product development through a truly global approach, making increasingly extensive use of R & D facilities in major foreign market areas.
Incorporating extensive new evidence from three separate surveys carried out by the authors, the book extensively documents the growth of Japanese R & D labs abroad, investigates their strategic roles, and evaluates the implications of their emergence for the technological competence of the countries in which they are located and for the competitiveness of the traditional MNEs that compete globally with the Japanese MNEs.
Marina Papanastassiou is Lecturer and Robert Pearce is Reader in Economics at the University of Reading.
