          Book Description

Sitting on the Job is a lifesaver for anyone who works in an office. No longer does the sedentary worker have to suffer from tingling or aching hands, neck or back pain, headaches or fatigue that can be so debilitating. Dr. Scott W. Donkin details the many variables that must be considered so that workers who sit for many hours a day can function effectively in a supportive and healthy work environment. For instance, each work station needs to be individually adjusted to suit the particular worker's body, lighting must be appropriate to the specific task, and there shouldn't be drafts or distracting noises. Dr. Donkin discusses all the possible physical ailments and conditions that can arise from poor working conditions and then offers ways to cure or prevent them. He points out the many negative effects of stress and what can be done to alleviate it. Perhaps the most practical chapter in the book details the many things to do to help counteract the physical effects of sitting. For example, Dr. Donkin recommends taking frequent micro-breaks to counteract tension buildup and fatigue in muscles and eyes. Stretching fingers, wrists and hands and looking into the distance several times an hour can significantly reduce strain. Illustrations are used effectively throughout the book to show problems and provide practical solutions.

4 out of 5 stars Good text for organizations in developing countries.......1999-06-01

If you are an organization in a developing or underdeveloping country getting into ergonomics for the first time, this text is for you. Most of the 100+ guidelines are tailored for the less advanced organizations in the manufacturing industries where there is still a whole lot of manual labor.

The text is pitched at the non-ergonomic sophisticated user. It is easy to read and understand.

Human error is here to stay. This perhaps obvious statement has a profound implication for society when faced with the types of hazardous system accidents that have occurred over the past three decades. Such accidents have been strongly influenced by human error, yet many system designs in existence or being planned and built do not take human error into consideration.; "A Guide to Practical Human Reliability Assessment" is a practical and pragmatic guide to the techniques and approaches of human reliability assessment HRA. lt offers the reader explanatory and practical methods which have been applied and have worked in high technology and high risk assessments - particularly but not exclusively to potentially hazardous industries such as exist in process control, nuclear power, chemical and petrochemical industries. A Guide to Practical Human Reliability Assessment offers the practitioner a comprehensive tool-kit of different approaches along with guidance on selecting different methods for different applications. It covers the risk assessment and the HRA process, as well as methods of task analysis, error identification, quantification, representation of errors in the risk analysis, followed by error reduction analysis, quality assurance and documentation. There are also a number of detailed case studies from nuclear, chemical, offshore, and marine HRA'S, exemplfying the image of techniques and the impact of HRA in existing and design-stage systems.

5 out of 5 stars Compressor Performance Monitoring Simplified.......2002-12-05

As the Lead Process Reliability Engineer in a 280MBPD refinery I am expected to train our engineering staff on monitoring strategies that will drive down our unplanned event and equipment maintenance costs. Recently I was assigned the responsibility to develop an effective compressor monitoring program to take advantage of turnaround planning and PPM opportunities within the refinery. Since my background is primarily in chemical and utilities operations, I felt that this book could assist me in meeting expectations.

I was not disappointed. This book strikes a unique balance between the basic principles of compressor operation, and the more technical issues sought out by experienced mechanical engineers. I give it the highest marks because of the inclusion of chapter 19, which provided not only the information that resolves centrifugal compressor performance monitoring, but has the potential to be used by production personnel for deliberate energy savings in years to come.

              5 out of 5 stars A Modern, Comprehensive, Applications-Oriented Text.......1998-10-24

The author compiled this 550-page book because there is a real need for users to have a single-source text that clearly illustrates, in hundreds of recent photographs, machines ranging from slow-speed reciprocating to single-shaft, cost-effective, reliable, magnetic bearing-equipped integral-motor centrifugals. It correctly perceives the need to acquaint the modern reliability professional with highly successful 7000 HP multi-stage helical screw machines in dirty gas service and sees fit to highlight such items as leading-edge flexing pivot bearings, dry gas seals, swirl brakes, sophisticated surge avoidance systems, etc. Also included in the text are clear, easy-to-follow examples of performance calculations and graphic shortcut methods for determining upgrade potential and the effects of operating compressors under conditions that deviate from those originally specified.
